      Licques 11 miles

      Slept in. Well not exactly slept. More like dozed fitfully. Camping is not really good for proper sleep. Firstly, you have wind. No, not me. Apparently, it was gusting up to 45mph last night. Quite believe it. My tent made quite a racket. Bought for lightness rather than robustness.

      Secondly my mat, also bought for lightness. As shown in the photo it is tiny, especially compared to my old one. I can just about get my head, shoulder and bum on it if I am careful. Feels like I am trying to balance on a partly blown-up balloon. I also bought a blowup pillow. Nice idea but I’m now trying to balance my head on a balloon on top of a balloon. And then there are the kids in the campsite who seem to turn in after me but wake much earlier. Might not be the same kids of course they could be operating in shifts. And I was hungry.

      Anyway I did get going eventually. First I had to walk in the wrong direction to get something to eat so it took about an hour to get back to the campsite. Luckily it was another short day. About half spent in woods.

      On arrival at another campsite I got myself and clothes washed, sort of. In my desperation to get my bag as light as possible I ditched the wee shampoo and soap I had planned to take. No problem in hotels but consecutive nights camping is a little less pleasant. As I have laundry wash at least the clothes will be clean.

      Lesson of the day :- I have noticed a tendency of some folk to dress according to what the weather on the previous day. I have just done the culinary equivalent. Last night I noticed the pizzas were popular and they looked lovely. But I had ordered quickly so went for that dire risotto before seeing any pizzas. Tonight I again ordered quickly at the campsite snack bar and went for the pizza. Shocking effort. While struggling to finish it I noticed that no one who came in after me ordered pizza. Might play a waiting game tomorrow and suss the scene.       Czytaj więcej

      Guines 10 miles

      Another easy day. Loving this gentle start with short days for the first week.
      Meant I just chilled out in my room and didn’t get going until 11am. Gave time to digest the hotel restaurant breakfast before setting out. Loved it.

      One of the rituals of this walk is the collection of the testimonium from His Holiness in Rome (or an underling if he is busy) to show anyone remotely interested what has been achieved. As this is much prized, neigh coveted, one has to prove that enough of the walk was completed. One look at the poor feet would give a fairly clear indication but the generally accepted method is to produce a pilgrim’s credential, a wee booklet which gets stamped every day. No problem at all. Just nip into the local tourist office for the needful. But my guidebook informs me that a stamp in French is called a tampon. I kid you not. Nowhere else in the book is there any indication that the writer has a sense of humour so I suppose I just have to trust him. Duly called in to the main tourist office this morning and spoke to the very attractive young lady behind the desk. Asked for a stamp. Blank look. Asked if she had a tampon while desperately showing my credential book. Seemed to work. She slapped her tampon on my book and gave me a lovely smile. Got to love this country sometimes.

      Dinner tonight looked promising which was welcome because lunch didn’t happen again. Snack bar in the campsite. Large menu. Chose a risotto with turkey, chorizo etc. When it came it was some sort of frozen pre-cooked thing that had been microwaved. They didn’t even take it out of the box it came in. To add insult to injury it was tiny. Despite the pleasant enough lettuce and dressing I am still hungry. And no idea how I might get anything for breakfast. Hey ho. At least today’s rain has stopped and the sun is shining and drying out the tent.       Czytaj więcej

      Arriving in France

      I was ok with driving on the right but every time the satnav (and Darren) said go left or right I did the opposite!! I seem to have completely forgotten the difference between the two 😂 I think I was just so stressed and tired that my brain was not working at all with these instructions. It didn’t help that it was raining quite hard at times and the street lights in France aren’t great also there’s no cats eyes on the road to help you see the lanes clearly. Saying that though I have to say how impressed I am with the French roads, they are so smooth, not a pothole to be seen anywhere. Not even on the small roads, the roads are lovely to drive on.       Bis England nur ein Katzensprung?

      Dünkirchen - Escalles/ Cap Blanc- Nez (78km)
      Zuerst sind wir die Highlights von Dünkirchen abgeradelt, also Rathaus und Belfort (beide sehenswert) sowie das Denkmal für Jean Bart (Korsar und local hero , dessen Finger eine lokale Spezialität/ Gebäck sind).
      Dann folgen wir nun der Vélomaritime, dem Küstenradweg von Dünkirchen bis Roskoff in der Bretagne (etwa 1500km - das kann also eine Weile dauern 😁). Aber von der Küste haben wir heute nicht viel gesehen. Es ging ziemlich viel im Zickzack durch das Hinterland bis zu einem Abstecher nach Grand-Fort-Phillipe, wo wir von einem lokalen Fest überrascht und förmlich gezwungen wurden, Mittagspause zu machen😊 - merguez frites (ich glaube, ich habe in den letzten Tagen mehr Pommes gegessen als in den letzten Jahren!😅).
      Weiter ging es nach und durch Calais, das wieder mit einem wunderschönen Rathaus mit Belfort sowie einem breiten Sandstrand überraschte. Außerdem trafen wir auf den gefürchteten Drachen von Calais.😧😉 Aber die Klippen von Dover waren nicht zu sehen.🤷‍♀️
      Nach Calais wurde es richtig anstrengend. Auf der Suche nach einem Campingplatz fuhren wir auf der stark befahrenen Küstenstraße immer voll gegen den Wind, sodass wir kaum Muße für einen Blick auf die Opalküste hatten. Beim ersten Campingplatz wurden wir dann auch noch abgewiesen. Also weiter und das bedeutete Cap Blanc-Nez einmal hoch und wieder runter (im kleinsten Gang bei 8km/h🥵)! Belohnt wurden wir mit einem Platz an der Kuhweide 😅 und Picknick am Meer. Und natürlich haben wir es uns nicht nehmen lassen, nochmal zum Cap hochzusteigen und die Aussicht zu genießen. Wir machen eben keine halben Sachen!😁 Nur die Sonne wollte nicht mehr richtig mitmachen.       Czytaj więcej

      Sva padla na veterinarski kontroli ☹️ Tabletke za gliste naj bi dal veterinar, zabeležil v potni list, se podpisal in žigosal. To nama manjka, ker pri nas dajemo lastniki sami. So pa nama rezervacijo prijazno prestavili na jutri in rezervirali obisk pri lokalnem veterinarju.

      Ankunft in Calais

      Also bis hier hin ging echt alles schief. Nachdem ich schon nur nach Calais statt nach Glasgow kam, lag der Bahnhof auch noch eine Stunde vom Hotel entfernt - das keinen Platz mehr hatte, obwohl es auf booking.com angezeigt wurde. Ich habe am Ende noch ein anderes Hotel gefunden, das preislich halbwegs ging, aber da war ich schon ein wenig genervt 😅 Czytaj więcej

      2de dag Sangatte

      Gisteren, na een koude stormachtige dag, zonder zon, hadden we eigenlijk beslist om vanmorgen door te reizen, meer zuidelijker en zonniger, maar vanmorgen om 08h bij het ontwaken, zagen we de zon en nauwelijks nog wind. Bij het ontbijt dan beslist om nog een dag langer hier te blijven, de juiste beslissing zo bleek later. Na het lekkere ontbijt , verse Franse baguet met Vlaamse charqueterie, de traditionele ochtendwandeling met Arino, zalig in de zon en warmte. Evelyne wou lekker genieten van het zonnetje , ik heb dan mijn fiets genomen en de streek verder verkend. Echt heel mooi, maar pittig fietsparcours. Daarna hebben we de barbeque aan gemaakt en súper zalig genoten van een zeer lekkere gezellige BBQ. Echt genoten van het weer en het samen zijn. Wat gebabbeld met de andere mensen hier rondom ons, is leuk als wij samen 5 talen spreken ( Duits, Nederlands, Frans, Engels en Spaans.
      Daarna nog avondwandeling langs de zee met Arino om de zon ( bijna) te zien ondergaan in zee. Nu nog een nageregte nuttigen en moe maar voldaan naar bedje.
      Morgen vertrekken we toch naar Le Treport. Hopelijk ook met mooi weer.

      Auf nach Frankreich...

      Nach einem gemütlichen Frühstück haben wir eingepackt und sind gegen 12h Richtung Frankreich aufgebrochen.
      Einen Zwischenstopp haben wir in Wevelgem eingelegt, um Kurts Rad fit zu machen.
      16h dann weiter nach Frankreich, Sangatte, Camping Des Mottes Black.
      Extrem windig hier... Auf zum Strand, echt nice... In der Bar Tabac noch 3 Weinchen bzw Bier getrunken, dann ab zum Womo und ordentlich gefuttert. Viel Musik gehört und gelacht.       Czytaj więcej
