      Day 39 - Langres to Grandchamp

      The steep ascent into Langres, on the back of 30+ km, took everything out of me yesterday. But I woke renewed and refreshed this morning. Now, I'm cross and have to vent. I've walked through a large number of residential communities here in France. They all have a church and a Mairie (local government). Some have a bakery (only sells bread), and bigger places might have a Tabac (a bar where you can buy coffee, maybe a meal, tabaco products and lottery tickets, etc.) If you are really lucky, there will be an Epiceries (groceries). But they don't usually open before 10 am, are closed between 12 - 4 pm, are usually closed on Wednesday and the weekend. As you can imagine, I've really struggled to ensure I have something to eat as I'm walking during the day. All I need is some fruit and cheese; when I can get it. So, when I saw a supermarket on my map as I was walking today, I thought it would be worth the diversion. I get there; CLOSED. Yet another public holiday! The fourth this month! I now have one apple and some nuts to tide me over until I find the next source of food. I walked 38 km today - 8 of which was a total waste. On a side note: I have a whole new respect for King Henry IV! The amount of land that man controlled is seriously impressive. Oh, I got a brief stint of canal walking (Canal Entre Champagne et Bourgogne), I walked the entire length, and more, of the Lac de la Liez, a lake, some lovely forest walking and the usual country lanes and minor roads. P.S. I found out that the public holiday is for Pinkster (Pentecost), celebrated 6 weeks after Easter!Læs mere

      Aufbruch im Regen

      Die Regenjacken müssen hervorgeholt werden. Im strömenden Regen verlassen wir den Stellplatz und so bleibt es auch, bis wir die nächsten 250 km hinter uns gebracht haben. Auf dem Aire Camping - Car Park in Luxeuil- les-Bains haben sich schon mehrere Mobile eingefunden.
      Der Regen hat etwas nachgelassen. Damit wir uns wenigstens etwas bewegen, laufen wir in die nahegelegene Stadt und schauen uns dort ein wenig um.      Læs mere

      Am Ende der Hinreise angelangt. Total 25h Fahrt, 20 Schleusen, 2 Tunnel, ca. 150km Wasserweg und viele sehr schöne Landschaften. Ein Problem sind die fehlenden Einkaufsmöglichkeiten unterwegs, viele französische Dörfer haben kaum noch Infrastruktur, und auch die Schleusen sind nicht mehr bedient. Da konnte man sich früher mit etlichen Lebensmitteln versorgen. Wir konnten genau bei einer der zwanzig Schleusen etwas kaufen, nämlich Weisswein und Honig.Læs mere

      Disaster en France

      Eigentlich wollte ich heute bis Vichy fahren, leider bin ich nur bis Besancon gekommen.
      Irgendwann kam die erste Maut Stelle auf der Autobahn. 6 Schranken nebeneinander, da ich die Zeichen nicht verstand, bin ich ganz links hingefahren. Leider brauchte man dafür eine bestimmte Karte, also musste ich rückwärts wieder raus. Hinter mir vier Lkw s , alle am schimpfen und hupen.
      Dann bin ich zur 3ten Schranke, dort ging auch nichts, wieder rückwärts r, zwei Pkws hinter mir. Schimpften auch🙄endlich war ich an der richtigen Schranke. Geld oder Ec Karte, mittlerweile war die Tasche runtergefallen, ich fand beides nicht.Wieder Gehupe, ich wahrscheinlich hochroten Kopf und auch am fluchen, am schwitzen🤯

      Da ich ganz schnell dort weg wollte, da alle sich über mich ärgerten,bin ich schneller gefahren als sonst... in ein Blitzer😤
      Ich bin dann in Besancon abgefahren und habe ein Cafe au lait mit tarte aux pommes genossen. Irgendetwas zog mich zur Kathedrale. Dort habe ich für mich und meine Reise eine Kerze anfezündet..für Schutz und Leichtigkeit. Die Stadt war wirklich schön. Leider habe ich den Parkplatz nicht wiedergefunden, ebenso mein Ticket nur nach langer Suche. Ich bin fertig mit den Nerven!!!      Læs mere

      Zwischenstop in Chaucenne

      Wir haben uns über Google Maps die Bleibe für den Zwischenstopp ausgesucht. Es sind sehr geräumige Zimmer über zwei Etagen mit viel neuem Holz. Es ist hellhörig, ich hoffe, dass die anderen Gäste in der Nacht ruhiger sind.
      Die anderen Gäste sind wahrscheinlich vor uns schlafen gegangen, aber die Kirchturmglocke hat 3/4 meiner Familie den Schlaf geraubt. Ich habe relativ gut geschlafen :-)      Læs mere

      Übernachten in Aire Besancon Marchaux

      In Frankreich angekommen, entschließen wir uns, diesmal die teure Maut zu bezahlen, um möglichst schnell nach Deutschland zu kommen.
      Die A75 überquert die Tarn mit der längsten Schrägseilbrücke der Welt. Über 2400 Meter lang überspannt das Viadukt von Millau den Tarn in einer Höhe von 270 Metern. Ein beeindruckendes, aber nicht unumstrittenes Bauwerk, das 2004 nach drei Jahren Bauzeit und über 20jähriger Planungszeit eingeweiht wurde. Vor allem Umweltschützer und Kritiker der hohen Kosten von 400 Millionen Euro versuchten den Bau zu stoppen.
      Nach 10 Jahren war die Brücke schon von mehr als 40 Millionen Fahrzeugen genutzt worden - die natürlich alle eine extra Brückenmaut bezahlt haben.
      Übernachtet haben wir auf einem großen Autobahnrasthof - ruhig ist es nicht, aber schnell zu erreichen.      Læs mere

      So letzter Urlaubstag bevor es morgen nach Hause geht.
      Das Wetter meint es nochmal gut mit uns und somit schlendern wir heute Vormittag über den Kanal und die Doubs ins Städtchen.
      Viel gab es nicht zu entdecken, aber die Lage hier im Jura ist wunderschön.
      Am Nachmittag gab es nochmal in der Sonne das letzte Croissant & Pain aux chocolat für die nächsten Monate 😍. Wir freuen uns schon sehr auf ein leckeres, selbstgebackenes Körner/Nussbrot zu Hause!      Læs mere

      Busey-les-Gy 18 miles

      There is something about watching lightening flashing nearby while having breakfast that encourages a degree of tardiness in a pilgrim. I have never been described as a fast mover first thing in the morning but I took that to new heights this morning. It was only once I was convinced that the small thunderstorm had indeed passed us by that I ventured forth.

      All went well for about an hour before the tell-tale rumble re-appeared and a few heavy drops started. Panic stations to get the waterproof cover on the rucksack before it got really wet. It’s too warm to worry about getting wet myself but I wouldn’t want my bag contents to get soaked. Passport, testimonial, credit cards etc as well as sleeping bag and so on are best to be kept dry. But despite threatening nothing really came of it although it did try again once or twice in the morning before it settled down to just blue sky and heat.

      Was having a lovely blether with Anne when I passed what turned out to be the only open shop/bar/cafe in the whole day. Didn’t want to stop and interrupt the chat. Not getting food wasn’t the issue as I had a banana and apple that I have been carrying a while that needed eaten but I missed getting liquid as it turned out there were no water possibilities today either. And it was a hot one.

      My host last night had suggested a shortcut for today that brought the distance down from 22 miles on the official route to a more pleasant 18 miles. Would have been rude to ignore local info so I went for it. It made for a lot of road walking on what turned out to be a busier road than I would have liked but I was grateful on arrival that I didn’t have another 4 miles to walk especially as tomorrow is a 20 miler.

      A strange incident happened as I got close to finish. A local worthy started speaking to me and asked if I wanted a photo. I assumed he meant did I want him to take a photo of me. We are both well past the age of taking selfies (as you may have noticed) so I just thought it was a kind gesture so agreed. He nipped inside the neighbouring barn and came out holding a muckle great cockerel. I now thought he wanted me to hold the beast while he took a photo of us. Why, who knows? But no, he proceeded to stick this thing on his own head and pose for me to take the photo. Which I duly did and you can enjoy at your leisure.

      I am in a gite for pilgrims tonight and I have a fellow pilgrim. From Luxembourg I think and only started a couple of days ago but looks like we might be covering the same sort of distances so he might become a bit of an issue. I would so much prefer to be on my own.

      Dinner was provided which was just as well as there was nothing available anywhere else. It did.      Læs mere

      Hier erwartete uns ein wunderschöner Park 😍😍😍 mit Seerosen-Teich und mit einem hübschen Schlösschen. Der Start war etwas holprig, da sie aus uns unerklärlichen Gründen keinen Lunch anbieten konnten. Aber unsere beiden Männer haben sie wie zu Steinzeitzeiten auf den Weg nach etwas Essbarem gemacht und so konnten wir dann gemütlich im Park ein z'Vieri essen. Das hat die Stimmung definitiv wieder gehoben 😎🤣Læs mere

      Dampierre-sur-Salon 12 miles

      Bit dizzy when I got up this morning. Not nearly as bad as before but disconcerting nevertheless. Had a distinctly diy breakfast of banana, pain au chocolat and some leftover Orangina from last night. With a lemon meringue pie also left over from last night. When I did finally get going about 10.30am I packed my bag and went to leave only to discover I hadn’t put any lenses in and my glasses were well down the bag. Interesting that the effort of putting down the bag and unpacking was more than I was prepared for. So the day was spent in a bit of a blur. When walking you only really need to see where you are putting your feet, everything else is just nice to have.

      Nice short day of only 12 miles. Bit hot though. Quite clammy. Even though I had brought lunch I couldn’t be bothered stopping for it. Arrived at the next place by 2.30pm. A chambre d’hote with all mod-cons. Somewhere to wash my clothes, somewhere outside to dry them, even air conditioning in the bedroom. And a 3 course meal provided. Just great.      Læs mere
