      Lagrasse

      Left Carcassonne just after 6 am. Sunrise not until 7 now so days shorter.
      Did 14km until heat really kicked in. Then hitched to Lagrasse. 3 students picked us up after only 20 minutes which was nice
      staying in lovely little pension run by an English lady. Decided too hot to tent.
      42 degrees here this afternoon, so limited sightseeing to a cathedral and abbey.
      Warm again for tomorrow. Pretty nervous about water. Think i have drunk 4 litres today. Might have to do a heavy carry.
      Sent a selfie to our kids on snapchat. Nick asked if i had put the old filter on. No more selfies for me.      Läs mer

      Carcassonne day 1

      Tough day getting here. So the meal at Agapé was welcomed but a typically three hour seven course meal was probably wasted on us, being so tired to really enjoy it. Meal and wine were fabulous and I would recommend Agapé to anyone.

      First proper day was a bit overcast but still warm. A thirty minute walk to la cité was good and we wandered around there visiting the cathedral of st nazairé again. Lunch in the cauldron restaurant was very nice with duck gizzard salad tried for first time which was very good. A gentle walk back to the apartment for 3 pm for a bit of relaxation.      Läs mer

      Croisière en Bateau Fluvial

      It’s 7am and as the sun slowly peeks above the horizon the scenery flashes by at 160kph. We are on the Intercité train IC 4655 en route for the 3 hour trip to Carcassonne via Toulouse. It’s going to be a very hot day with temps forecast to be 40 degrees!! The southern part of Europe has been sweltering for much of the summer, and while we have avoided most of this so far on our trip it looks like the weather has finally caught up with us. Fortunately the train is air conditioned and journey is comfortable.
      Last night we stayed in a hotel directly opposite the train station and in amongst lots of small restaurants, so it was a very convenient location. It took us all of 2 mins this morning to get to the Gare St Jean station to catch our train.
      Our friends Pete & Lou met us at the Carcassonne station and showed us the way for the short 300m walk to Le Bateau Leander, their lovely canal boat. They are from the UK but live on their boat for about 5 months if every year cruising along the many canals of France and sometimes the canals of some of the surrounding countries. Their boat is a 26m long by 8m wide Dutch barge built in the UK and fitted out like a luxurious 2-bedroom condominium. This is cruising the canals in style!! It was very nice to meet up with them again as we have not seen since before COVID.
      Canal boat cruising is one of the nicest ways to see the countryside of France. It is relaxing as you leisurely cruise along at a usual speed of less than 10kph with the water and scenery slowly passing by. The main excitement is when you pass through one of the many locks needed to change water levels, and these come up about every hour, sometimes more often. The canals in France pass through the very centre of the towns and cities and you can stop anywhere you want at any time. Very convenient. Today Pete had moored the boat very close to the Carcassonne station to ease our coming in board.
      Pete is the chief trip planner and after we had boarded and settled in he suggested delaying the start of our canal boat cruise until tomorrow, and instead suggested we spend today looking around the medieval town and castle of Carcassonne. Built as a fortress by the Romans 2,500 years ago and rebuilt and extended several times since, this castle is an impressive structure that houses a small town which has become a major tourist attraction. We have been here before but it was nice to see it again. The four of us looked around the Citadel and had lunch at one of the many restaurants until the heat of the day caused us to head back to the cool air conditioning of the boat.
      Tomorrow we will leave early on the canal boat cruising section of our trip.      Läs mer

      The train

      Interesting experience on train yesterday. A lady missed her stop. She then got really upset and started slapping herself and biting her arm while yelling out.
      Can only assume she was on something.
      We have been really impressed with the French. People are very friendly and incredibly polite. Stopping in cars to allow you to cross. Don't see that in NZ.
      Heat has been a killer though. Not looking forward to walking again.
      Allen is still in Sete. He will be a few days behind us as he waits for Alex to join him. We will all meet up in Toulouse to watch coverage of All Blacks vs France.

      Toulouse und Carcassonne

      Nach einer frischen Nacht in den Pyrenäen, besuchte ich am Morgen Toulouse, immerhin die viertgrößte Stadt in Frankreich. Ich besuchte in der Stadt die Kathedrale, verschiedene Plätze und durchschlenderte die Altstadt. Alles ganz schick, aber ein wenig hat mir hier das besondere (charakteristische) gefehlt, komisch lag das daran, dass Bordeaux mein letzter Eindruck war? Nun gut weiter ging es nach Carcassonne, auch dieses Ziel hatte bei meiner Reiseplanung eine sehr hohe Priorität, die größte Festungsstadt in Europa, ein sehr geschichtsträchtiger Ort. Wow, schon bei der Ankunft sah ich die breite steinerne Brücke, welche in die Burg führt. Es waren schon einige Touristen hier, aber es war trotzdem ein wirklich tolles Erlebnis, ich umrundete die komplette Festungsmauer (ja, hat ein wenig gedauert 😅). Genoß den Ausblick auf die Weinberge und den Blick in die historische Stadt im inneren. Damals in der Schule hab ich sogar einen Vortrag über die Burg gehalten 😉. Ich lernte trotzdem nochmal viel über die Geschichte und bin extrem froh, diese Burg in echt besuchen zu dürfen 🤗. Auch wenn Toulouse nicht so meins war, der Tag hat sich mit Carcassonne definitiv gelohnt 😃.Läs mer

      Heute gings zur Burganlage nach Carcassonne. Wir haben von dieser riesigen und komplett erhaltenen Burgstadt noch lang ned alles besichtigt aber es war "voi cool" (Aussage Buam). Temperaturen waren noch ganz gut und die Touristenmassen des Hochsommers waren auch noch nicht da.

      Die Citè von Carcassonne ist eine im Mittelalter, auf einem Hügel der Altstadt von Carcassonne, Region Okzitanien, Südfrankreich) gelegene Festungsstadt.

      Die Citè de Carcassonne liegt am rechten Ufer der Aude, am Canal du Midi und im Südosten der heutigen Stadt. Ihr Ursprung lag in gallorömischer Zeit (Erstbesiedelung im 1. Jh. v. Chr.), ihr wehrhafter Ausbau zur Festung passierte im Mittelalter (in der Burgstadt lebten damals bis zu 4.000 Menschen, heute noch ca. 250), wurde doch von hier die Handelswege zwischen Mittelmeer und Atlantik kontrolliert. Carcassonne war heiß umkämpft, musste vielen Belagerungen trotzen und spielte in Frankreichs Geschichte immer wieder eine bedeutende Rolle. Sie galt als Zentrum der ketzerischen Katharerbewegung, unterlag dann in den Albigenser-Kreuzzügen und beheimatete im 13. Jahrhundert die zentrale Verwaltung der südfranzösischen Inquisition.

      Die Festungsstadt ist von einer doppelten Mauer (je etwa drei Kilometer lang mit insgesamt 52!!! Türmen) umgeben. Die Hauptgebäude im Innern der noch bewohnten Cité sind eine in die Festungsmauer integrierte Burg (Château comtal) und eine Kirche (Basilique Saint-Nazaire).
      Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde die bereits verfallende Cité von Carcassonne unter der Leitung von Eugène Viollet-le-Duc restauriert. Es entstand dadurch ein gut erhaltenes, ausgedehntes historisches Monument, das 1997 von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde.      Läs mer

      Carcassonne am Abend

      Der erste Anblick auf die Festungsstadt Carcassonne war atemberaubend.
      Gerade bei Nacht ist sie mit ihrer doppelten Mauer und den 52 Türmen sehr beeindruckend. Die umfangreichen Restaurierungsarbeiten aus dem 19. Jahrhundert durch den renommierten französischen Architekten, Kunsthistoriker und Denkmalpfleger Eugène Viollet-le-Duc lassen das immer zugängliche Freilichtmuseum im alten Glanz erstrahlen.Läs mer

      Basilika St-Nazaire-St-Celse

      Die ehemalige Kathedrale und heutige Basilika gehört zu den bedeutendsten Sakralbauten in Südfrankreich. Seit 533 steht an dieser Stelle schon eine Kirche. Wahrscheinlich wurde der Bau Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts vollendet. 100 Jahre später wurde ein großer Umbau vorgenommen, der von den gotischen Kathedralen im Norden des Landes beeinflusst wurde. Weitere Änderungen wurden durch den 100 jährigen Krieg und die Hugenottenkriege nie umgesetzt. Daher wurde das Bauwerk schon 1840 als Monument Historique anerkannt. 1898 erhob Papst Leo XIII die Kathedrale in den Rang einer Basilica Minor.Läs mer

      Kurzer Hand machen wir noch den Schlenker über Carcassonne.
      Wir wollten unter der Burg parkieren was leider mit unserer Fahrzeughöhe nicht möglich war. Neben dem Eingang in die Burg gab es aber einen Parkplatz für Wohnmobile.
      Einen Spaziergang durch die Burg, Besichtigung der Kirche sowie ein Mittagessen haben sich absolut gelohnt.      Läs mer

      Captivating Carcassonne

      We met the bus that was transporting us to Carcassonne at the allotted time. There was a big line of people boarding so we joined the queue. We set off just after 9.30am and we were advised it would take approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to arrive at our destination.

      Carcassonne is a hilltop town in southern France’s Languedoc region and it is famous for its medieval citadel, La Cité. The citadel has numerous watchtowers and double-walled fortifications. The first walls were built in Gallo-Roman times, with major additions made in the 13th and 14th centuries. Château Comtal, a 12th century castle, sits within the Cité and we explored it and the ramparts.

      Carcassonne was the first fortress to use hoardings in times of siege. Temporary wooden platforms and walls would be fitted to the upper walls of the fortress through square holes in the face of the wall. This provided protection to defenders on the wall and allowed them to go out past the wall to drop projectiles on attackers at the wall beneath, acting as a permanent machicolation. This is a floor opening between the supporting corbels of a battlement, through which stones, boiling water, hot sand or boiling cooking oil could be dropped on attackers.

      The Cité de Carcassonne was restored by the theorist and architect Eugène Violet-Le-Duc in 1853. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997 because of the exceptional preservation and restoration of the medieval citadel.

      We explored the chateau, which had many artefacts on display. We also walked around about two-thirds of the ramparts. We took in wonderful views of the surrounding countryside including vineyards and olive trees. We could also see much of the Cité of Carcassonne from various vantage points on the ramparts. We got great views of the Basilique Saint-Nazareth, the Théâtre Jean Deschamps and the Port Narbonnaise, which is the city entrance. We climbed and descended more than 750 stairs as we explored this wonderful medieval city.      Läs mer
