      Dinner at Henri’s

      After a lazy afternoon we headed out again for dinner. Stopped at a little bar for a drink on the way, there were a group of kids playing darts, 3 guys and 1 girls, the girl was killing it. The restaurant was quite busy and well worth the recommendation . Chef came out to double check how Graham wanted his steak, the waitress was always checking if everything was ok. The head lady came out to help us interpret the menu. Lovely evening.Read more

      Last day in Epernay

      What a fabulous day we’ve had. We took a little tour to another village this morning and visited the main square and the church. Just as we were getting out of the car at the church. Christophe, our friend from yesterday pulled up. We couldn’t believe it, what are the chances of him driving past just as we stopped. Anyway after a bit of a chat he says “wait here don’t move” and hurtles off in his. car.
      Comes back in five or so minutes with a bottle of Moët for us and a Moët lapel pin for me. We couldn’t get over how generous it was. Turns out he rides mountain bikes as well so he and Graham had a animated hand conversation about that before he had to head off somewhere.

      We had to be back in Epernay at 11.30 for our Champagne tour of Mercier Champagne. We just had enough time to visit the lookout above Mareuil-sur-ay, wow what a view and the morning has turned glorious for us.

      The wine tour was fabulous, they give you a handset which interprets the tour for you, you get on a little train and tour the caves below the Mercier Mason, they are just enormous, and back to the reception to sample three glasses of champagne. Oh my goodness we haven’t had anything to eat today so we rolled out of there after the tour.

      Back home for a quick patisserie lunch and a rest and then we went for a drive around a couple of small villages close by. So many little villages and all so cute.
      I wanted to do one more walk down champagne avenue , the houses are all so opulent and it is so pristine. A credit to the region really. We stopped in at Hotel De Ville, it doesn’t operate as a hotel anymore it’s now the town hall. The gardens are gorgeous though and there were lots of people enjoying them.

      Walking back closer to our hotel we tried out a cheese bar just around the corner, the plan was to have a cheese platter for entree and then go somewhere for desert. OMG that cheese platter was fabulous and neither of us needed any dinner after that.

      We’ve had a lovely stay in Epernay, met some great people, seen some lovely countryside, had some fabulous food and wine. Who could ask for more.      Read more

      Épernay is a wonderful picturesque town with so much to see and take in. The flowers are still amazing and the parks are so well kept.The people are very welcoming and friendly and have tolerated my attempts to converse with them in French. I have got up early to get baguettes and pastries from our local boulangerie, and have successfully purchased some wonderful meats and cheeses from our local charcuterie. Our apartment is in a beautiful old building full of character.Read more

      Champagne & Cathedrals, Part 2

      I decided to let myself sleep an extra hour and take a later train to Epernay. It was a lovely ride through historic vineyards of the finest grapes in the world. After arriving, I strolled down the splendid Avenue du Champagne! What a dream! First stop was Champagne Mercier, with their famous train ride through the caves. The tour was supposed to last two hours but instead took half the time, so I stopped in the garden at Perrier-Jouet to try the famous Belle Epoque! After finishing my glass, I made the less than two minute walk to the biggest house, Moët & Chandon. Lovely tour and net nice people from the Netherlands and a lady from just outside of Baltimore! Back up the street to Champagne Venoge. I was the only person on the tour, but my wonderful Italian guide Antonela made it a wonderful experience! She gave me lots of extra activities to do as well! Feeling pleasantly buzzed, I made a quick stop at the Museum of Champagne before strolling down to Eglise Notre Dame de Epernay. After lighting a candle and taking a quick look around it was back to the Avenue and my final stop at Champagne Boizel. I enjoyed my tasting in the company of a lovely Australian couple. By this point I’d eaten little more than a few slices of baguette so I remedied the problem with a bag of Doritos from the train station vending machine, before boarding my train back to Reims!       Epernay… Champagner 🤣

      Heute früh haben wir erst mal länger geschlafen als beabsichtigt. Es war dann gestern doch später…
      Wir rutschten am Sonntag dann mal eben so durch nach Epernay. Der Blick war wunderschön. Überall Weinberge. Wir fuhren auf den kostenpflichtigen Stellplatz. Dieser ist wunderhübsch angelegt.
      Dann marschierten wir zur Avenue de Champanger und schauten uns die wirklich wunderschönen Häuser der edelsten Winzer an. Die Kirche nahmen wir auch noch mit.
      Zum Essen gingen wir in die Brasserie. Wir speisten gut und auch ein Glas Champagner gönnten wir uns.      Read more

      Exploring Épernay on foot.

      We had no commitments today, so had a lazy start to the day. I went out and purchased some baked goods from another local Boulangerie and we headed out around 10am to do a self-guided walk around the town that was recommended by the Tourist Office. Unfortunately, not long into the walk we found it difficult to ascertain some of the landmarks as the print on the map was tiny (my eyesight is pretty good but even I struggled), so decided to go a bit off piste and do our own thing.

      We went past the Hôtel De Ville (town hall), Théâtre Gabrielle Dorziat and Église Notre-Dame. At this point we found it impossible to follow the map, so we just meandered down the streets, stopping at various buildings or areas of interest. We saw the Portail Saint-Martin, Maison de La Lune (a funky Art Nouveau house) and Église St-Pierre et St-Paul. There was so much to look at and on such a lovely day it was nice to explore the town.      Read more

      Unser Zwischenstopp auf dem Weg an die Atlantikküste ist der kleine Ort Epernay. Idyllisch gelegen am Fluss Mame, am Rande eines Naturparks.

      Das Haupthema hier ist "Champagner".
      Klar - ist der Ort doch die inoffizielle Hauptstadt der Champagne.

      Reims

      Heute müssen wir nur knapp 200km fahren und gaben somit Zeit uns noch die Stadt anschauen - Reims, Reims?
      Wobei Reims schon zu kennen wäre. Schließlich wurde die Kapitulation der Wehrmacht am 7.5.1945 dort unterschrieben.
      Hier wurden auch von 816 bis 1825 eine Vielzahl französischer Könige gekrönt.
      Gut, dass wir da waren.
      (Meine Frau Wagner dreht sich bestimmt im Grab um, falls sie nicht mehr lebt, das hat sie uns sicher beigebracht.)
      Es gibt eine bemerkenswerte Kathedrale zu besichtigen. Fenster von Marc Chagall gestaltet und von anderen "modernen Künstlern", eine Verbindung zwischen alt und neu. Und ein Symbol der deutsch französischen erneuerten Freundschaft.
      Aber erstmal ist ein Parkplatz zu finden. JD macht einen aus, mitten in der Stadt und extra nur für Wohnmobile.
      Mmh, Platz gefunden aber eine Schranke davor... Ein netter Mann erklärt uns, dass noch 2 Plätze frei sind aber nicht wie wir durch die Schranke kommen .
      Mein Geduldsfaden kurz vor der Zerreißprobe: oh Mann fahr weiter, wir finden was anderes... aber irgendwo muss doch ein Eingang sein...
      JD dreht eine Runde und ich frag das Internet. Wer lesen kann ist klar im Vorteil!
      Es steht ein Strassenschild mit einer Telefonnummer neben der Schranke... kein Text und Zahlen mit Punkten, da soll mal einer drauf kommen! Gut, 2. Runde, Nummer gewählt, vor Aufregung lieber englisch als französisch gesprochen, den Zahlencode erhalten, yippieh die Schranke öffnet sich und ein Platz ist frei, kostenlos mitten in der Stadt!
      on y va, los geht's! Noch eben lecker Croissants gekauft und pain au chocolat, der Vormittag ist gerettet.
      Eine schöne Kathedrale, wie Notre Dame in klein, ein paar schöne Gassen, tolle Geschäfte, nette Leute.
      Der Tag vergeht mit gucken und laufen, nur nach Luxemburg müssen wir noch, da wartet Pit schon auf uns!      Read more

      Caen

      zügig aufgestanden, eingepackt und los. Heute über 400 km und Paris, zum Durchfahren, vor uns.
      Es hat gestern fast den ganzen Tag geregnet, wie gut dass wir nur im Auto saßen. Eine volle Stunde im Stau mitten durch Paris. Die hässlichsten, ollsten Ecken kamen zum Vorschein. 4x lalülala und von Rettungsgasse haben die Franzosen ja noch nie was gehört. Motorroller und -Räder dürfen mit max 50km zwischen den Spuren fahren und das machen sie auch. So manches Mal
      hab ICH Blut und Wasser geschwitzt aber alle machen das mit und nehmen meist irgendwie Rücksicht ...
      Der Platz den wir anfahren wollten ist gar nicht existent, man sollte sich eben nicht aufs internet verlassen...
      So fahren wir durch die Champagne und sehen unendlich Wein, blau und weiß. ubd auch die schlechten Seiten hinter dem tollen Perlwein. Überall Campinglager, Folien gespannt, ein bisschen Holz hingeschüttet und die Saisonarbeiter, meist dunkelhäutig oder gar schwarz, hausen in Zelten oder Wohnwagenburgen...
      Sonst sehr schön, wen es nicht regnen würde...
      Abends ist man froh, dass man den letzten freien Platz wenn auch ohne Strom bekommen hat, morgens denkt man sich: was für eine Kaschemme...
      Ohne Strom ist für uns ja kein Problem. Die Solarpanelle auf dem Dach lädt fröhlich und wir brauchen ja für fast nix Strom außer dem Kühlschrank. Und der ist echt gut und sparsam. Am Anfang hatte ich ihn zu hoch gestellt, da war alles gefroren, auch das was nicht im vorhandenen! Gefrierfach war.
      Wir haben mal wieder echt gekocht, Nudeln und Tomatensauce, kein Problem.
      Ab ins betti, die Mücken toben sich aus aber diesmal ist JD das Opfer, ein Glück.
      Nur schlafen ist echt eine Spezialaufgabe in diesem Mini Bett. Um 1 war ich hell wach. Zum Glück hatte ich den tolino dabei und konnte lesen, aber irgendein Arm schlief immer ein, sodass ich gezappelt habe bis JD auch wach war...      Read more

      Moët & Chandon

      Das Wetter hat, wie angekündigt, gewechselt. Nachdem wir es heute früh dann doch geschafft haben unser Duschwasser warm zu bekommen ( schon 1.000 mal gemacht 🤣) und gefrühstückt haben, laufen wir zu Moët & Chandon und besichtigen die Keller.
      Es war interessant, die Führung war auf englisch.
      Am Ende wandern natürlich 2 Flaschen ins Womo.
      Uns hat die Führung gut gefallen. Aber es gibt sicherlich spannendere Keller 😃      Read more
