      Serata a Lyon

      In giornata siamo arrivati a Lione, e dopo aver fatto il check in e sistemato le nostre cose, siamo usciti ad esplorare.

      La prima tappa è stata il Parc de la Tete d'Or, uno splendido giardino ricco di attrazioni, tra cui un giardino botanico e uno zoo completamente gratuiti.

      Me and my bitten and swollen legs collected a 24-hour Lyon City Pass and checked in. Quick change and out to make the most of it!

      First stop the Funicular line, part of Lyons transport network since 1862. It stopped at the Roman ruins and the Notre-Dame de Fourviere. It has a stunning view over the city.Read more

      Lyon Explorers Tour really brought the city to life!

      The Traboules didn't disappoint. With more than 400 of these secret passageways, they have been used over the centuries to provide better access to the River, to avoid the crowded streets, and as a key part of the resistance in WWII.

      It was such a shame that the Centre d'histoire de la résistance et de la déportation was closed... it just means I will have to come back to Lyon 😁

      Lyon im Regen

      Am Morgen wurden wir vom Regen geweckt, nicht sehr motivierend um aufzustehen. In der Hoffnung, dass sich das Wetter bessert, haben wir getrödelt um kamen erst gegen Mittag los.
      Als erstes mussten wir gucken, wo wir unsere Fahrkarten bekommen. Ein
      72-Stunden-Ticket kostet nur 17€, theoretisch am Automaten zu kaufen, aber die gibt es nur an größeren Stationen, in der App (für die Bus und Metro Routenplanung) geht das leider auch nicht, aber an der Rezeption vom Campingplatz wurde uns gesagt, am Kiosk gibt es Fahrkarten (im Bus auch, aber da sind sie teurer). Mit einem Gemisch aus wenig Englischkenntnissen (die Verkäuferin) und noch weniger Französisch (ich) konnte ich immerhin Tickets für eine Stunde kaufen (andere hatte sie nicht mehr), um damit zu einer Metrostation fahren zu können wo es Automaten gibt.
      Im Bus wurde eine Umfrage gemacht, worum genau es ging weiß ich gar nicht, aber, da der junge Mann englisch konnte wurden wir auch befragt.

      Nachdem wir glücklich unsere 72-Stunden-Tickets hatten, ging es endlich in die Stadt. Ohne wirklichen Plan haben wir uns treiben lassen, beeindruckt von den großen Prachtbauten, der charmanten Altstadt und den Schaufenstern. Geschäfte für Regenschirme (80€ und mehr für einen Schirm), Hutläden und natürlich Chocolaterien und Patisserien.
      In der Altstadt ein Restaurant neben dem anderen, da wir fürs Mittagessen zu früh und fürs Abendessen zu spät waren, überwiegend geschlossen.
      In einem kleinen Laden haben wir schließlich verschiedene Schokoladen-Aufstriche, Madeleines und in Armagnac eingelegte Canelé gekauft. Wir waren sehr streng mit uns, sonst wäre es mehr geworden.
      Leider wurde der Regen wieder stärker und die Füße taten weh, darum sind wir irgendwann zurück gefahren. Im Supermarkt noch "schnell" fürs Abendessen einkaufen, Baguette (🤤), eine kleine Käse Auswahl (nichts besonderes, aber lecker), Salami (noch nicht probiert) und eine Flasche Crémant.      Read more

      Fourvière und Lugdunum

      Heute ging es mit der Zahnradbahn auf den Hügel von Fouvière. Die Treppe von der Station nach oben laufen und schon steht man der beeindruckenden Basilika gegenüber.
      1870 bitten die Bewohner von Lyon die Jungfrau Maria, die Stadt vor dem preußisch-französischen Krieg zu bewahren. Die Gebete wurden erhört und zum Dank wird diese Kirche gebaut.
      Auch von innen ist die Basilika sehr eindrucksvoll, man weiß nicht wo man zuerst hingucken soll.
      Neben der Kirche hat man einen schönen Ausblick über Lyon, nur der Wind war etwas ungemütlich, wie auf der Domplatte in Köln.

      Nicht weit entfernt ist das Amphitheater aus der Römerzeit. Lugdunum (Asterix-Fans wissen natürlich, dass Lyon früher Lugdunum hieß!) wurde
      43 v. Chr. als Verwaltungszentrums Galliens gegründet und war dadurch 300 Jahre lang eine sehr wichtige Stadt im römischen Reich.
      Neben den Theatern (ein großes und ein kleines) gibt es auch ein sehr interessantes Museum. Eigentlich wollten wir gar nicht da rein gehen, aber ich war auf der Suche nach einer Toilette und der Eintritt war nicht teuer. Gut zwei Stunden durch die Ausstellung gewandert, die schriftlichen Erklärungen waren überwiegend nur auf französisch, aber es gab einen deutschen Audio Guide wo vielleicht nicht alles, aber sehr viel erklärt wurde.

      Da wir im Anschluss nicht mehr richtig aufnahmefähig waren, haben wir uns bald auf den Rückweg gemacht. Und als wir fast "zu Hause" waren, hat es auch endlich wieder geregnet.      Read more

      Journee de visite de Lyon

      Journée de marche et visite de Lyon aujourd’hui. La journée a débuté par une petite randonnée en funiculaire jusqu’à l’église de la Fourvière pour aller voir la vue panoramique de Lyon et visiter l’église pour bien certain allumer un gros lampions à 10 euros pour expier les péchés d’Olivier des 40 dernières années….lol. L’intérieur de l’´Église de Notre Dame de la Fourvière est très majestueuse.
      En continuant notre tout nous somme descendu vers le musée et théâtre Romain pour en admirer les ruines extérieures de plus de 2000 ans. Maintenant la descente vers le bas pour se rendre à la Brasserie GEORGES fondée en 1836 pour le repas du midi comme j’avais eu l’occasion d’y déguster un repas avec Diane cette automne nous y sommes allé et bien content de la visite. Nous avons marché dans Lyon pour se rendre a la grande fresque des personnalités de Lyon et celle des loges de Lyon.
      Après et bien c’était la recherche des Traboules de Lyon nous avons pu en parcourir une mais pas facile d’accès au public souvent. Sur notre chemin du retour nous avons croisé l’horloge de Charvet dites horloge des guignoles construite en 1864. Nous avons attendu pour entendre sa sonnerie du 1/4 d’heure. On a un peu été surpris que l’événement n’était pas très élaboré…lol. Nous avons finalement trouvé une Traboules que nous avons traversé pour enfin se rendre à la maison pour un petit repos après 17000 pas.      Read more

      Spent the morning shopping to replace panniers and Pats shoes. Then headed into town - Place Bellecour- to tourist info. If you come to Lyon & need assistance ask for Lorreen. By the time we left we had a full itinerary and everything we needed. Lyon is a very big city - next after Paris and the gastronomic capital of France. Unbelievable the array of cafes, restaurants, boulangeries, chocolatiers, patisseries, bistrots, bars and, most Lyonnaise of all, the Bouchon - a traditional French affair, with a relaxed atmosphere and extremely, hearty servings.

      We found the best coffee in France at Slake coffee shop on the Rue Ancienne in Centre Ville - the brownies and carrot cake weren't too shabby either ( This sort of research required repeat visits- morning & afternoon tea).
      In between times we managed to take a Bateaux boat ride on La Saône and the Petit Train, which toured around The Croix Rousse area of Lyon - the old Silk weaving district. From the late 18th, early 19th century, the city's silk weaving industry made the Lyonnaise wealthy, while keeping the weavers in shocking conditions. Strikes and battles followed with hundreds of deaths, but conditions gradually improved.

      This tour is highly recommended, as is the Lyon city card. The city has a very good, but complex, public transport system that uses buses, trams, trains, vaporettos and funiculars. We used all of them to get around. Buying tickets would have been a nightmare without the city card. All are free with the city card, as are all museums, the boat tour and the Petit train.
      Took the vaporetto home to change for dinner!
      The highlight of the day was dinner at Le Comptoir Abel, a highly recommended and authentic establishment. We both had traditional Lyonnaise dishes. Entree was a shared crayfish salad. Tracey's main was Quenelle de brochet en gratin maison ( like a souffle with creamy fish (Pike) sauce) and Pats was Gratin d’écrevisses ( crayfish gratin). Shared desert was marron gateau.       Saint Etienne to Lyon

      Riding through built up area for most of the first 25km. Stopped for coffee at Rive de Gien. Bikes were leaning against cafe window but slightly out of direct line of sight. When we finished our coffee Pat's front panniers were gone. Cctv also and busy area with customers. Spent rest of morning with police -very nice policeman, Hugo, will be at the top of Mont Du Chat in Superman suit. We must try and spot him.
      With rain looming and the joy gone from the day, we trained to Lyon.
      Nice apartment in the Confluence district and fairly close to big shopping centre for supplies. This district had been turned from an industrial wasteland to an architecturally interesting and environmentally sustainable area, a great endeavour.      Read more

      Another spot of shopping to fill Pat's panniers and we were off sightseeing on a 2 hour guided walk around Vieux Lyon, the oldest part of town. Lyon was founded in 43BC by the Romans and there is plenty of evidence to prove it, including two adjoining amphitheatres on the Fourviere hill - the oldest part of town.
      Lyon became a leading publishing city in the 15th century, as well as becoming involved in the finance industry and the beautiful old gothic and renaissance buildings built by its wealthy merchants over many centuries have been preserved and are now a UNESCO world heritage site.
      The silk workers built passageways between their workshops, warehouses and shops, for convenience and to protect the silk from the weather. These were called Traboules. During the Second World War, they were used by the resistance. Lyon suffered badly at the hands of Klaus Barbie, 'The Butcher of Lyon'.
      The Funicular lifts you from riverside to the Basilique Notre Dame du Fourviére. It is a beautiful confection inside and the terrace outside has commanding views of the city.
      Returning to Centre Ville, we found ourselves in the middle of a Multicultural festival in Place Bellecour. Pat was particularly intrigued by an impromptu Madagascan dancer who seemed to be able to move all sorts of body parts independently of the other matching part.

      Fahrt nach Lyon

      Vorbei am Juragebirge mit einem Blick auf eine schöne Landschaft mit einer eher entspannten Autofahrt. Selbst Lyon zeigte sich verkehrstechnisch fast nett und wir haben das Hotel auf Anhieb gefunden. Ein Spaziergang an der Rhonepromenade und ein Blick auf den größten Platz in Lyon vermittelten einen ersten Eindruck.Read more
