      Le Mont-Saint-Michel

      Heute sind wir dann auf den Mont-Saint-Michel gegangen. Dies ist ein Granitfelsen auf dem ein Kloster und eine umliegende Ortschaft stehen. Der Felsen steht mitten im Atlantik und ist wie gestern ja schon geschrieben, manchmal eine Insel und bei Ebbe aber auch zufuß begehbar.
      Seit 1966 sind in dem Kloster die Gemeinschaften von Jerusalem angesiedelt und empfangen Pilger und Besucher aus aller Welt.
      Das kleine Dörfchen rund um das Kloster hatte viele Treppen, aber einen super süßen Charme und enge Gassen.
      Das Kloster haben wir uns auch angesehen. Sehr hübsch und und man hat von oben einen mega Ausblick. Auch heute hatten wir Ebbe, aber wir wollen heute Abend nochmal hinfahren und uns mal die Flut ansehen 😊      Read more

      Beauvoir und Mont-Saint-Michel

      Nachdem wir mit Blick auf das Meer aufgewacht sind, haben wir uns auf den Weg zu unserem nächsten Campingplatz gemacht. Dieser liegt in Beauvoir, einem Vorort des La Mont-Saint-Michel. Dort angekommen, haben wir erst mal zufuß den hübschen kleinen Ort erkundet und sind dann mit den Fahrrädern um den Mont-Saint-Michel gefahren. Hier wirkt alles wie in einem Märchen, sogar Rittern und Burgfräuleins sind wir begegnet.
      Mont-Saint-Michel steht bei Flut als Insel komplett im Wasser, aber wir hatten heute Ebbe und konnten die Insel somit komplett mit dem Fahrrad umrunden. Wie in einer Wüste sieht es bei Ebbe aus. Hier ist der Ort, mit den stärksten Gezeiten in Europa und das merkt man auch..
      Nachmittags haben wir es uns dann auf unserem Camping ganz entspannt gemütlich gemacht und die Sonne genossen 🌞      Read more

      Le Mont Saint-Michel

      Von Granville ging es direkt nach Pontorson. Hier ist ein Carrefour Supermarkt, der es gestattet, dass man auf dem Parkplatz im Camper übernachten kann. Von hier aus sind es nur noch 10 Kilometer bis zum Mont Saint-Michel. Da noch genug Zeit war, bin ich mit dem Rad die Strecke gefahren. Naja, 8 Kilometer davon, dann war wandern angesagt, weil man die letzten 2 Kilometer nicht mit dem Rad fahren darf. War so nicht geplant! Anyway nützt ja nix, da muss man dann wohl durch. Die ganze Zeit hat man den  Mont Saint-Michel vor Augen und zuerst fühlt man sich in einen Science Fiction Film versetzt, etwas unrealistisch, so ein Berg mit einer gewaltigen Kirche oben drauf mitten im Watt! Wenn man dann durch die Mauer ist, ist es eher wie in einer Herr der Ringe Kulisse. Dicke Mauern und ein Dorf dahinter, das nicht wirklich real aussieht. Wäre Frodo oder Legolas hier um die Ecke gekommen, hätte das total natürlich ausgesehen. Total touristisch, aber auch wieder echt cool.

      Nach der Runde auf dem Berg war noch ein Cache ausserhalb der Mauern zu machen. Dann also ins Watt und ein mal um die Insel. Während ich da so auf den Felsen rumklettere höre ich plötzlich Wasser, das klingt wie ein Fluß. Die Flut schiebt hier das Wasser in einer wahnsinns Geschwindigkeit als flache Welle durch das Watt. Da ich nicht auf den Felsen übernachten wollte, musste es jetzt sehr schnell gehen. Zum Glück das Döschen gesehen, Log raus, Name rein, Dose zurück und schnell zurück Richtung Brücke. Manno, das war echt knapp, keine 2 Minuten später war die Stelle an der ich eben noch trocken Fusses gegangen bin schon überflutet. Hätte mindestens nasse Füße gegeben. Naja und das Watt war schon trocken eine rutschige Angelegenheit. Danach auf dem Rückweg noch ein paar Döschen eingesammelt. Nix dolles, nur Statistik.      Read more

      Tapestries and Monasteries

      Where - Bayeux and Mont Saint Michel

      Finally we have a day doing things that I am more interested in. One of them was to have a look at the Bayeux Tapestry (in Bayeux of course). I remember hearing about this tapestry when I was in school - two things stuck in my mind: 1/ It was really long - it is almost 70 metres long and about 50cm wide, and 2/ Part of the embroidery (it is technically not a tapastry), depicts Halley's comet. That was about the extent of my knowledge so when we visited we were given an audio tour which outlined what each scene of the tapestry was about. So the Bayeux Tapestry is about William the Conquerer and the Battle of Hastings 1066 - Halley's comet supposedly made an appearance in 1066 just prior to the Battle of Hastings and was seen as a sign of William 's success. Both Brad and I found the exhibit interesting - couldn't take any photos so I have included a stock photo.

      The other place we visited was Mont Saint Michel which is practically a carbon copy of St Michael's Mount in Penzance (England) but it was more impressive in my opinion. We joined a guided tour regarding the history of the monastery and abbey and parts of the complex are undergoing renovation. Unlike the one in England, this one is uninhabited but it certainly serves as a great tourist attraction.

      So, we leave the Normandy area and head for the Loire Valley - place that has many Chateaux.      Read more

      A long drive to Mont St Michael

      We had another quiet night in Wanda, although I didn’t sleep particularly well because my knee has started hurting again after climbing the hills twice to get to petit minou, and to top it off when I went to get the bed stuff down I got a cramp in my shoulder that has now stated in my neck and I have a constant headache. Being on the road 24/7 is catching up with us, but I’m glad I’m doing this at 47 and 67 like most.
      There’s not a lot to report on today. We took a 170 mile drive from Petit Minou to Mont St Michael stopping a little over halfway in an airè for some lunch and arriving here at 3pm.
      We decided in the end to stay in P8 of the Mont St Michael car park. It’s a dedicated layover for motorhomes we’re relatively near although it’s the furthest car park and it’s safe and quiet.
      At 4pm we took the free shuttle on to the island getting there for 4:30pm and already the shops were shutting but it did give me a good chance to photograph the place with no people. Then we decided to walk the bridge back and go to my old shooting spot to get it at night.
      It wasn’t a particularly good evening for it as there was a lot of moisture in the air, it wasn’t dark enough when I started shooting and I wasn’t very happy with the results but I have shot this before so I’m not complaining.
      I also did my first drone night shots which were a disaster as I didn’t have the image review on so randomly taking pictures at a high iso for 3+ seconds didn’t really work. But lesson learnt.
      All in all with walking back we clocked up 6.5 miles which wasn’t good for my knee, and we got back to Wanda at 7:30pm so just through some hash browns in the oven turned the tv on and called it a night. We were both pretty knackered and I spent the rest of the evening working out where we might go tomorrow.
      Because I had to give my dad an end date we had to book a return ticket which is the 25th November, which I wouldn’t have done if I’d known Ben was leaving us. So now we’ve pushed so far up to the top of France we can’t go any further. Originally I’d planned to go to maisy battery but that’s temporarily closed so instead I’ve decided to head down the country towards Paris and hopefully see the Christmas lights.
