    Nice, France

    August 27, 2017 in France

We've made it to France!! I was really sad to be leaving Lake Como and we couldn't of come to a more different place. Walking down the Promenade in Nice reminded me of a beach version of Las Vegas - big flash hotels and casinos lined the street, palm trees, fancy cars and hundreds of people. It was a huge change from the peaceful, tourist free Lake Como as the place was humming with so many people. Our accommodation at Hotel Solara was in the heart of the city and not far from the beach which made walking around really easy. I went for a run the first morning which was again super nice to get away from everything and have some alone time, especially away from all the other tourists as early morning meant the streets were quiet! We visited Monaco nearby which unfortunately didn't live up to expectations - it was nice and full of expensive super yachts but apart from that nothing much else was going on. We visited the Monte Carlo Casino while we were there which was cool as Nana was like a kid in and candy store but other than that there wasn't much else to do. That same day the All Blacks played Australia in the second Bledisloe Cup match and we headed to kiwi owned Waka Bar that Hollie had recommended. Kimmy and I enjoyed the most delicious salads and mojitos for breakfast, a weird food and drink choice for 10am but so so good!! We also met some awesome Kiwis here, two guys from Christchurch backpacking through Europe, a couple visiting their daughter Zoe, and a lady Heather off a superyacht! We caught up with them that night for dinner at Le Frog where we tried escargot and frogs Legs. Both we're coated in garlic and butter so they were definitely edible, the frogs legs tasted like chicken and the escargot was super chewy! After dinner, Zoe and I went to Wayne's bar for a dance and cocktails before meeting her parents at Waka Bar to watch the McGregor vs Mayweather fight. It was a looooonng night for this old girl and by the time I walked in the door at 7:30am, Kimmy and Nana were just waking up!! We spent the day lazing at the beach and bathing in the aqua blue waters before saying goodbye to Kim who was heading to London for a few days then back to NZ. It was so cool having her with us and another international trip to add to our growing list of destinations!!Read more

    Nice is nice

    May 31, 2016 in France

Great joke, eh?!? Having a nice time in Nice!

First thing this morning, we took a tour a a French perfumery that's been operating since the 18th century. Interesting learning the differences between perfume and l'eau de toilette... Basically, perfume is 25% essential oils, lasts all day, and goes directly on your skin (where you can feel your pulse); while l'eau de toilette is "watered down", lasts a couple of hours, and is used more as a body spray. Both break down over time and should be kept out of the light to prolong useful life.

We were dropped off at the centre of Nice, at the waterfront, for the day - it's nice. The colours of the water are amazing - many shades of blue! It truly is the Cote d'Azur (Coast of Azure)! Some of us walked up to the Chateau, which is the highest point overlooking Nice and the views are spectacular!

We walked through street markets and bazaars. Enjoyed fresh olives, sun-dried tomatoes, brioche, crepes, and fruits... Nice lunch in Nice! So many cool shops, including the extreme high end... Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Rolex, Hermes, and the list goes on!

The view from our group meeting place... McDonald's!

    Nennt Ihr das etwa Frühlingswetter?

    April 27, 2017 in France
