      Latinska četrt

      September 5, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Tu imajo zadnje počivališče pomembni in vplivni Francozi... Od Emila Zola do Marie Curie.
Okoli Pantheona pa luštne uličice in čudovit Luksemburški park.

      La Table de Colette

      September 16, 2022 in France ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We had planned to have lunch at MUMI today - I had done some research on good Parisian restaurants and MUMI had ticked all the boxes, including consistently excellent reviews. However, a couple of days ago I received an email from them saying that they had to cancel our booking as they had had a fire in the kitchen and had to close for several weeks - bummer!

Luckily, I had kept my notes for a number of restaurants I had researched and La Table de Colette was second on my list and we were able to secure a table for lunch. And, what a lunch it was. The staff, the ambiance, the wine and the food were all top notch. The staff have a real pride in what they create and love to see the joy the customers experience when eating their food.

There isn’t a menu - you just decide if you are having 3, 5 or 7 courses and if you want the matching wines. We went for 3 courses and Ian chose the wine. You start off with an amuse bouche, which was three wonderful morsels that were each divine - oyster leaf on a rice cracker with a scallion mayonnaise, a small piece of fish, again with a divine sauce, on a delicate cracker and finally roasted and dried beetroot with an horseradish cream.

Ian selected the wine which was fabulous, a 2017 Grand Cru Gewurztraminer from Alsace by François SCHMITT which went perfectly with the meal.

First course was a green tomato served with gazpacho and stuffed with deep fried pearl cous cous and other stuff - divine. Second course was zucchini served two ways with a deep fried oyster and an amazingly intense sauce - Ian had his first oyster which he appeared to enjoy. Third course was an ode to Chocolate, a cremaux, a crumb, a sauce, a crisp and more, so much more. The dessert was divine. In fact the whole meal was one I have to rate in my top five food experiences. We also had the best coffee we have had so far in Paris and it was served with delicious petite fours.

After lunch I ventured to the open kitchen to congratulate the young team of talented chefs and got a tour of the kitchen - very memorable indeed.

      Day 1 in Paris

      December 19, 2022 in France ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Finally made it to Paris after another 10:40 in the air.
Got through french customers pretty quickly. Had to walk over to terminal C to find the train. Buying a ticket was a bit of a challenge but I figured it out. The train took about an hour then a short walk to the hotel. The weather in Paris is cool around 12°C , with a bit of drizzle, but generally not too bad.

Made it to Hôtel des Grands Hommes. The plan was to drop off my bags and to wander around until either the room was ready or it was time to meet Erin. Luck was on my side again and I was able to get straight into the room and got upgraded to a superior room facing the Pantheon. The room is small but quite nice.

Had a shower and a quick nap and walked over to Montparnasse station to meet Erin. Took the root through Luxembourg Gardens which seem quite pleasant. The pond in the middle of the park is starting to freeze so it must have been cold over the last few days. Got a bit lost in the next back streets but finally found the station. By the time I got to the station Erin's train was due.

The station was packed with people and there didn't seem to be any information on arrivals so I didn't know which platform Erin was arriving at. I wandered around for a few minutes getting more and more anxious that I had missed her when she appeared out of the crowd. We walked back through the park again and got settled in to the hotel.

Erin chose an Italian place around the corner for dinner it was called Papilla. She had the thee cheese pasta and I had a pizza. Both meals were great. There was a strange staircase in the middle of the restaurant going down to who knows what. We speculated that it might lead to the restrooms or to some under ground entry from the train station but as neither of us went to look we will never know.

After dinner we wander back to the hotel via a small convince store were we picked up some double stuffed Oreos. One we got back we had a brief planning session about what we will do tomorrow and decided to hit a couple of museums that are not too far away. By 8:30 I was toast and crashed out while Erin stayed up watching something on her laptop.

      Paris

      July 15, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

      Not a great day.

Missed my flight to oslo this morning. I thought the flight was at 11am and i casually arrived at the airport around 8:40. I got up and left before my alarm even went off.

Then noticed at the airport my flight is actually at 930 😳

I started scrambling to find my airline counter. Got wrong directions from one employee and later proper directions from another

Found the counter and the guy there tells me its closed. And that its been closed since 8:50 making it sound like ages ago. I look at the time and say "dude, thats 4 minutes ago! Comon, pleeeaaase?". But no luck

So i scrambled and found a flight to bergen norway with an overnight in paris. Not a terrible plight minus the 8 hours in the edinburgh airport. Ugh

Finally got to my hotel in the paris latin quarter at 10pm. Walked around to some nice sights and eventually found a beer specialty place and settled in. Was totally enjoying the quiet moment and 10 minutes later a brit bachelor party crashed my table. They were all super fun actually and my night became a whole lot more lively. Perks of traveling alone sometimes

Edit: and met a super nice parisian couple (maude and elie) after i wrote this. We talked politics for half an hour, which you would never know from our goofy pic. Wish we had met earlier but need to sleep too

      Farewell Dinner

      April 26, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

This is our last night in Paris and to celebrate, our tour director, Simeon, had made a reservation at L'Escarmouche, a bistro near the Pantheon on the Left Bank. The RER train whisked us to the Notre Dame - St. Michel station, and using Google maps, Doug and I walked to our restaurant.
The dining room was in the cellar which lent a special air to our gathering and our meal was serenaded by two musicians playing an accordion and a guitar. Doug said it was just like on Lady and the Tramp, although we didn't have spaghetti.
Onion soup, escargots, prawns, cod, chocolate lava cake and profiteroles and dinner was complete. Under the watchful eye of the glowing Eiffel tower, we said goodbye to our fellow travelers, each heading on to their next adventures in life like we are
What a way to spend our last hours in la belle Paris!
April 27th 09:30 am - It's only taken several taxi rides and almost a month, but we succeeded in getting a taxi to the Charles de Gaulle airport on a flat rate. My French helped a lot and we weren't the same gullible tourists who arrived here on April 4th. We navigated the airport with finesse, and started our journey to home sweet home.

What has this experience taught us? That there are so many wonderful people in the world and so much beauty waiting to be discovered. But we also have so many wonderful people in our personal world made up of family and friends, and this is what makes home the best place on earth! We can't wait to reconnect with all our loved ones!
