      Travel Day 3: Art in Paris

      I KNOW. A photo (or a postcard or a print) won’t do them justice, but here’s some of the art that moved me today.
      1. I stumbled on the Tunnel des Tuileries by accident this morning. I saw hundreds of peie on bicycles today. This tunnel is covered in art - this was one of my favorites.
      2. L’Air du Soir, Henri-Edmond Cross
      3. A different version of Starry Night. I think this was painted before the famous one at MOMa, before he became so ill.
      4. I don’t know what this is; it was at the Musee D’Orsay in the cafe where I had lunch. I liked all of the women musicians.

      Paris

      My last post.
      We fly home tomorrow.
      We have had a great trip. I have a few reflections:
      The French and Swiss people have been wonderful. Very friendly and welcoming. I do think we are lucky coming from NZ. We haven't managed to offend too many people.
      The mountains are big. 500m climbs in NZ are pretty big. Quite usual to have 12-1500m climbs.
      The refuges are great. I wish we had them in NZ.
      Trails well marked and maintained. Also well used by walkers.
      Being able to bivouac almost anywhere in France is very generous by the French people.
      I still don't have bagette fatigue and will really miss croissants for petit dejeuner.
      3 months of walking is a long time. Maybe we are getting too old for through hikes.
      We have met and stayed with some wonderful people. i hope we get a chance to return the favour.
      And finally i want to acknowledge my father, Adrian, who died last week. Unfortunately i didn't get back in time to say a final goodbye.

      Lunch and the best views in Paris

      We arrived at Les Ombres, located at the top of Musée Quay Branly, following our meander through the Trocadero area and past the Eiffel Tower. We were seated at the best table, with wonderful views of Paris and the Eiffel Tower.

      First up was a glass of Rothchild’s rosé champagne, which was great, followed by a lovely white wine, a Pouilly-Fumé from the Loire Valley. It was the perfect accompaniment to our three course lunch.

      We started with an Amuse-bouche, followed by a choice of either Duck foie gras marbled with burnt fig leaves and a puff pastry brioche or marinated Mackerel from Brittany served with Romaine lettuce and black olives. The choices for main were Grilled sea bass with garden beans, anchovies and harchard or Roasted saddle of lamb, bolognese styled aubergines, ricotta and mint. For dessert there was a choice of Hazelnut mousse or Rhubarb creation. We also received petite fours with coffee.

      The meal was excellent from beginning to end, the staff were professional, engaging and provided a wonderful service, the company was also excellent and the venue, both the location and outlook, was superb.      Read more

      Chin Chin on the Seine

      Evening river cruise (Bateaux Parisiens) on the Seine was fantastic as our trip winds down. A mellow cruise on the Seine, the french really do sit along the river with wine, too many to count.
      We passed the OG of statue of Liberty. This Pont de Grenelle Statue of Liberty (a quarter-scale replica) was installed some three years after the New York Statue of Liberty, and in fact was originally one of the working models made whilst preparing to construct the “real thing.”

      Entspanntes Paris

      Heute nachmittag sitze ich wieder einmal ganz entspannt in einem Café und gehe das vergangene Jahr nochmal durch.

      2022 ist doch einiges passiert.
      Ich habe 2 Personen aus der Ukraine bei mir für 3 Monate aufgenommen und ihnen versucht, ihren Start in Deutschland 🇩🇪 so leicht wie möglich zu machen. Das beste daran ist, dass ich dadurch neue Freunde kennen gelernt habe. Danke Ludmila und Uwe für euren Zuspruch.

      Auch der Kontakt zu "den Müllers", wie ich sie liebevoll nenne, hat sich in diesem Jahr intensiviert. Wir haben oft lecker zusammen gegessen. Und die beiden haben mich gerade in Bezug auf die Ukraine sehr unterstützt.

      Zu Ostern durfte ich in Aurich mit Freunden grillen und am lagerfeuer sitzen und im Sommer mit der Familie in Kiel verbringen.

      Und die zweite Jahreshälfte stand sehr im Zeichen des JRK. 2 Gruppenleiter Lehrgänge, das Cross Media Festival 🎶, der Bundeswettbewerb in Berlin, die Bundeskonferenz und die Landeskonferenz in Einbeck und überall waren tolle Menschen am Start ♥️

      Auch das podfest in berlin und das Podcast Treffen in Frankfurt waren Highlights in diesem Jahr. Sowieso der ganze Podcast mit tollen Persönlichkeiten die mit uns vors mikrofon gekommen sind war eine tolle Erfahrung.

      Ein großes Dankeschön geht raus an Flo. Du hast unseren Podcast auf ein neues Level gehoben. Dafür bin ich dir sehr dankbar und freue mich auf weitere Sessions mit dir im Tonstudio oder live 🎶

      Danke auch an meinen Kollegen und Kinogänger Sven, mit dem ich in diesem Jahr sooooo oft im Kino war, wie nie zuvor. Ich glaube 17 mal saßen wir in den Kinosesseln...

      Ich habe tolle Menschen kennengelernt, die meinem Leben einen Mehrwert geben. Was meine ich mit Mehrwert? Tolle Gespräche auf Augenhöhe, neue Denkanstöße und eine eigene Meinung. Also alles etwas, was einen weiter bringt. Das Leben ist zu kurz für smalltalk. Ich gehe dafür lieber in die Tiefe. Danke dafür stellvertretend an Sanni, Xenia, Vanessa und Viktoria.

      Und dann sind da die Freunde, die häufig zu kurz kommen, darüber aber nicht einmal meckern, sondern sich freuen, wenn man sich trifft und Zeit miteinander verbringen kann. Schön euch zu haben ❤️😚

      Was kann das Jahr 2023 jetzt noch mehr bringen? Braucht es mehr? Ist nicht das wichtig, was ich aufgeschrieben habe? Ändern kann ich es eh nicht, ich kann nur die Weichen stellen und schauen, wohin mich das neue Jahr führt und wen es in mein Leben wirft...

      Day 21

      DAY 21: Culture Vultures

      We started the day with early entry tickets to the Louvre and after racing the queue to take a photo in front of the Mona Lisa, we then just free-wheeled around for a few hours; partly because that's how I like it, but mostly because Matt said the maps were rubbish! We found some hidden treasures; like the oldest known statue ever found, a friendly looking musician and a little nymph who would look lovely in our garden. Lunch was bagettes eaten in the Louvre garden; fun fact - this garden was designed by the same man who designed the gardens at Versailles. We then walked to Napoleon's Tomb and war museums, passing by the Egyptian Needle which was unfortunately roped off due to the rugby world cup. While Matt and the Cambeys went in, I found a shady tree in the garden and just sat. Matt found the war museum very interesting but found it hard to understand why the French revere him as much as they do. We were home by 5.30pm and spent the evening with good friends, good food and good conversation.Read more

      Rue Cler and Eiffel Tower

      Didn't actually go up the Eiffel Tower, but it made a nice backdrop for a picnic lunch from Rue Cler 😁 (Neat little food shops and whatnot -- the little red store is the cheese shop.) Here we also have Napoleon's tomb and the Conciergerie (on the bus ride between places).Read more

      Paris - Monumente besichtigen

      Heute haben wir im "Pain Quotidien" (Tägliches Brot) Frühstück gegessen. Es war sehr lecker, vor allem das pain au chocolat. Danach sind wir mit der Metro in die Nähe des Eiffelturms gefahren und haben diesen besichtigt. Es sah wirklich toll aus. Danach sind wir wieder in die Metro gestiegen und zum Triumphbogen gefahren. So ging es weiter, wir besichtigten die Sacre Coeur und die Kathedrale Notre Dame. Zu Abend assen wir im Bistrot du Commerce.Read more

      Paris

      May 18 in France ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

      Samstagmorgen um 01:00 Uhr sind wir in Paris angekommen. Wir haben einen sehr ruhigen Parkplatz direkt an der Seine bekommen.
      Am Morgen sind wir dann direkt zum Eiffelturm aufgebrochen.
      Es war ein traumhafter Vormittag mit viel Sonne. In einem Straßencafe haben wir uns ein leckeres französisches Frühstück gegönnt 🥐
      Die Parks rund um den Eifelturm sind leider schon großflächig für die Oylpima im Juli abgesperrt. Die Aufbauarbeiten sind hier schon im vollen Gange.
      Leider war Paris auch der letzte Stop unserer 3 Wöchigen unvergesslichen Reise.
      Fazit: Marokko ist ein MUSS!      Read more
