      Take me to the top

      April 18, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Nico has given me directions for the best way to get to the Eiffel tower which involves catching a tram and then a couple of metros but I still manage to get off 20 minutes walk away and it's pretty cold. When I arrive they're is a queue for the elevator probably a mile long but I decide the ascent by foot maybe a bit much for my dodgy ankle, so I join it. The cost is 29 euros but because it's so windy the summit is closed so they reduce the rate to 20euros. The view is amazing you can literally see the whole of Paris. I take an hour to walk around and enjoy the view and descend down the 6000 stairs. The tower is over 130 years old and was only meant to stay erected for 20 years but here it is still standing at 330ft tall. They paint the tower by hand with a special paint that preserves the iron that it's built with and as we are here we spot some of the workers taking on this monumental task.
I head down a back street on my walk to the Arc de triumph and stop in a beautiful cafe for lunch. In Paris it is much cheaper to eat big at lunch with a starter main and pudding offered at around £21 but that's too much for me on my own so I order the goats cheese and honey pizza. I've managed to purchase an adapter to charge my phone and ask the waiter to charge it for me, which he very kindly does. I walk a little bit further and when I approach the Arc de triumph there is some sort of ceremony going on. At the base of the Arch de Triomphe stands a torch. Every evening at 6:30 P.M. it is rekindled, and veterans lay wreaths decorated with red, white and blue near its flickering flame. It burns in the darkness to recall the sacrifice of an unknown French soldier who gave his life during World War I. The other lovely thing is different groups of cadets go to pay their respects and are chosen to lay flowers nice to see the young encouraged to respect history. I am supposed to meet Nico tonight but I'm exhausted and he has a headache so I take the tube home with the other half of my pizza and get an early-ish night.

After dinner we could do one more thing before calling it a day,
We went on a river cruise along the river Seign.
We didn't know if we would make it because we were so busy today but we're glad we got to see it.
By the time the cruise was coming to an end the sun began to set, it was pink and beautiful and the Eiffel Tower lit up.
      Everything in Paris is beautiful
We made it back to our hotel at about 10:30 but chilled out till about 11 before we went to bed.

      Day with Family in Paris

      May 5, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Thinking we weren’t going to catch up with Daniel and Alicia until dinner tonight, it was such a lovely surprise getting a message inviting us to join them for breakfast. Of course we didn’t say no! I don’t think I have ever gotten ready so quickly as I was that excited to see them.

Bad weather had been predicted which was disappointing so we were trying to determine what our plans would be for the day. Thankfully the weather gurus had it wrong and while we enjoyed a very delicious French breakfast catching up with two of our favourite people the skies started to clear. It was such a fabulous feeling seeing them. We have been away from home for such a long time and seeing family from home was very special.

Even more special was they were quite happy to spend the day with us so we headed off to Paris’s main site, the Eiffel Tower. Even though we have seen her before she is still quite spectacular, especially against the brilliant blue sky. While the weather was good we grabbed a baguette, a bottle of wine and some beers and some lush strawberries for an impromptu picnic in front of the tower. We did forget to get glasses so I’m sure Alicia and I looked so classy drinking wine from the bottle. Alicia got her photo op and we had a lot of fun. There were heaps of people walking around selling wine and beer from their buckets which was such a great idea. We did make a couple of purchases and then our seller asked if he could leave his bucket with us while he had a break. We ended up minding his bucket of alcohol three times which we found quite hilarious. We must have looked trustworthy.

      Musée d´Orsay, Eiffelturm & L´Orangerie

      May 24, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Read more

      Eiffel Tower!

      June 8, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Waited for a couple hours in line and then made it to the top! The people in line by us were super annoying, and we got a bit too much sun, but the weather was gorgeous and the views were spectacular. Walked all around the top, the second floor, and the first floor, and it was crowded but fantastic. We grabbed some pizza for lunch from the first floor and we were surprised again that tourist attraction food was so much better than anticipated. Being up that high in the tower is incredible and it just shows how much of Paris we still need to explore!Read more

      Paris Tag 1 (update)

      June 14, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

      Biking in Paris

      June 27, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We spent our first day in Paris cycling around on cycle paths, separated bike lanes and at times along roadways, both paved and cobbled. From Vincennes we headed to the Seine River and biked along former roads on the edge of the river, now restricted to active transportation. We popped back up from the riverside to see the clear glass pyramids of the Louvre Museum, and walk our bikes through the Tuleries Gardens. After a playground break, we headed up the cobbled Champs Elysées to the Arc de Triumph, the centrepoint of the large and confusing roundabout in Place Charles de Gaulle. We rode along a few more avenues to reach the Trocadero for a view of the Eiffel Tower. The ride home along the left bank of the Seine River took us past the Eiffel Tower, the Hotel des Invalides, Saint Germain des Près and the Cathedral of Notre Dame. In the evening we met up with Jérome, Jean-Paul and Claude's son, and were thrilled to meet his partner Caroline and their children Benjamin (18 months old) and the newest addition Chloé (1 month old). It wasn't the easiest dinner for them with two tired little ones, but we were so happy that we were able to connect and Claire loved getting to hang out with tiny baby Chloé.Read more
