      There was so much to see and photograph, including Anna (Anke’s daughter), who had to endure a second day of hearing us speak English. It was particularly difficult for her, as she is just learning English at school, and our accents, combined with speaking too fast, made it difficult for her. We involved her in the conversation by asking her to teach us the German word for things, e.g. we now know a lake is ‘see’,a mountain is ‘berg’, a child is ‘kinder’, a tree is ‘baum’, the sun is ‘sonne’ and the stars are ‘sterne’.

      We had lunch at a lovely restaurant called Alta on the shores of the lake before heading back to Munich.      Read more

      A Big Day Out in Bavaria

      Today we had a slightly later start to the day. We have been very fortunate with the weather in Munich, and today is no exception - blue skies and sunshine with temperatures in the mid 20’s.

      Our first destination was Tegernsee, a picturesque Bavarian town situated on lake Tegernsee, about 55 kilometres from Munich. Again, as it was a sunny day, everyone was heading either to the mountains to hike or the lake to relax (eat and drink beer) or sail. The Germans love to hike through the mountains. On the trip south we passed numerous small villages, such as Waakirchen and Gmund to name a few. We also encountered a lot of traffic on the autobahn, and so the speed was restricted to between 80 and 120kms, which the Germans do not like. Yesterday, at times my cousin was driving at speeds of 140 to 160kms per hour and, even then, other cars were flying past us - they must have been going at least 200kms per hour! Way too fast for my liking.

      Tegernsee is situated on a lake, and so we went for a bit of a walk along the shoreline, where we encountered people sun baking, swimming in the chilly lake and fishing, and even saw people having scuba diving lessons. We then wandered around some of the streets, to check out the architectural styles of the housing.

      On our return to the lake, we went past the local brewery, church and many restaurants. We stopped at Alta, a lovely restaurant on the lake, to have a typical Bavarian lunch of bread with a range of spreads (like dips). We had tuna, artichokes and sun dried tomatoes, chicken and curry, smoked salmon and dill, mustard and honey, apricot and rosemary and a local cheese which are all mashed up with cream cheese - very nice.

      After lunch we drove around the lake, and then headed back to Munich. I am glad we got to Tegernsee early, as the traffic heading towards the area as we were leaving was overwhelming, with traffic jams that went for over a kilometre.

      Nach einer trockenen Nacht in der Scheune nehmen wir die 50 km zu meiner Tante und meinem Onkel nach Bad Aibling in Angriff. Das Wetter ist traumhaft und wir machen eine längere Pause am klaren Tegernsee.

      Ganz ehrlich hätten wir uns die Strecke dorthin etwas entspannter vorgestellt, aber ein ständiges Auf und Ab führte dann letztlich doch zu einer kumulativen Generierung von 500 Höhenmetern. Vor allem aber die Steigungen in der schwülen Wärme von 10 % über lange Strecken und vereinzelt in Wäldern bis zu 20% auf Schotter waren eine Herausforderung. Aber wir hatten ja Zeit und uns dann auch unser Kaltgetränk und die Tote verdient.

      Mit einem Ziel vor Augen geht das Ganze immer deutlich leichter.      Read more

      Tegensee

      Today Wyatt took us on an awesome but really hard hike up to the top of a ski resort in the darling beautiful town of Tegensee. Its about 1 hour south of Munich. We dragged up sleds that only cost 5 euros each to rent. It was 31/2 miles straight up in snow. Unbelievably we caught the little restaurant at the top 10 minutes before closing. We all had amazing soups and breads and Bavarian pretzels. Then we sledded all the way back down the mountain. Donn came in too hot around a corner and crashed right into Wyatt's sled at one point. Wyatt bailed right before impact but Donn had to hike down a huge steep hill to get the sled. The boys all liked to get as much speed up as they could. 😀 We dropped Wyatt off in Munich on our way "home" as his 3 buds from Cal Poly are visiting for the next few days. We will have to share him😔. Oh and by the way New year's Eve in Munich for the kids was fun! They were downtown in all the craziness and watched people lighting up pretty big fireworks. They sometimes landed in trees and shot sideways at people or into storefront windows etc. Freaked me out to hear about. Glad everyone safe😌 happy 2018 everyone!Read more

      It’s a completely different atmosphere there...Yes, miss the times of celebrations in Sweden. So glad you all got to spend the holidays in Europe...seems like you had a blast!!!❤️😀

      Fockenstein

      The week starts to blend after the bike ride. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are errands. I meet a friend to get advice on a place to live, registering my visa, and sorting out bank accounts. I check out language schools, double checking my original decision. I go to Salsa. I catch the sunset. I ride a bike to Grafelfing to discover that it’s closed by noon. I return to Grafelfing and get registered. I go to group book-reading and discover a Canadian who’s been working in Germany for 2 years and doesn’t speak German at all. She’s from Toronto.

      Wednesday though; Wednesday. Franz takes Oli and I to Frockenstien, near Tigernsee. It’s incredible. I would write something, but no words can describe it. I’m writing this on a lazy Saturday and I still can’t get over it. Here are pictures.      Read more

      Day 5

      Tegernsee, Deutschland

      Nach einem ausgiebigen Frühstück und einem Billiard-Match (welches Lena gewonnen hat) ging es für uns Richtung Schliersee. Da es uns dort nicht sonderlich gut gefiel (weil uns der See dezent an den Prinzenteich in Eisenach erinnerte), machten wir uns auf den Weg zum Tegernsee. Dort parkten wir und liefen zum Ufer. Trotz Wolken am Himmel gefiel es uns hier besser, wir entschieden uns dazu, im Taj Mahal (indisch) essen zu gehen. Anschließend suchten wir einen Stellplatz für die Nacht und fanden den perfekten Stellplatz - südlich des Tegernsees, direkt an der Straße, auf der wir am nächsten Tag zum Achensee fahren wollten. Als wir dort ankamen, regnete es leider, dennoch gefiel es uns sehr gut und als Sahnehäubchen gab es noch einen Bach in der Nähe. Wunderschön. Nach einer Folge „Grey‘s Anatomy“ bei Licherketten-Schein schliefen wir relativ zeitig ein, denn am nächsten Tag hatte Franzi Geburtstag und es erwartete sie ein Tag voller Überraschungen. ☺️Read more

      Der Tegernsee

      Nachmittags erreiche ich den Tegernsee. Die Postkartenidylle ist perfekt: Blau liegt der See vor dem Alpenpanorama. Ganz oben liegt noch Schnee, aber hier unten im Tal ist es warm und sonnig. Dazu läuten die Kühe gar lieblich mit ihren Glocken. Auf der Straße und am See ist es allerdings voll. Unmengen an Autos, Radfahrern und Fußgängern sind unterwegs. Offenbar hat das gute Wetter viele Ausflügler angelockt.Read more

      Tegernsee, Bad Tölz und Prien

      Ganz gemütlich ging es nach dem Frühstück bei leichten Nieselregen nach Bad Wiessee an den Tegernsee. Ich glaube mich zu erinnern, dass meine Oma da ganz früher auch schon mal dort gewesen war. Nach einer Stunde Autofahrt haben wir den Tegernsee erreicht. Das Wetter war sehr ungemütlich und kalt, so dass wir außer einem kleinen Spaziergang und einem Picknick auf der Parkbank noch ein paar Fotos schossen und wieder uns ins Auto setzten. Der Tegernsee ist wirklich nicht unbedingt aufregend - also eher was für reiche Rentner.
      Kurz auf die Karte geschaut, was noch in unmittelbarer Nähe zu sehen wäre, fiel die Wahl auf Bad Tölz. Dieser Ort ist bekannt durch die Fernsehsendung "Der Bulle von Tölz". Den Bullen haben wir leider nicht angetroffen, dafür aber eine hübsche, ruhige, malerische Altstadt, die wir entlang liefen. Durch Bad Tölz läuft außerdem noch die Isar, die momentan ganz schönen Tiefstand hat und wir dort am Flussbett entlanglaufen konnten. Maxi wollte noch ein paar Fotos von sich machen und rollte noch anschließend über ein paar Kieselsteine. Ich habe mich lieber für das Sammeln von ein paar schönen Exemplaren entschieden, die wir eventuell später zum Steine bemalen gebrauchen könnten. Nach einem Cappuccino bzw. Kakao ging es wieder zurück zum Auto und Richtung Chiemsee. In Prien machten wir nochmals Halt um uns um die Abfahrtszeiten der Schiffe auf die Inseln zu erkundigen, die wir noch für einen weiteren Besuch gebrauchen könnten.
      Zurück in Chieming haben wir noch auf das Abendessen gewartet und konnten anschließend das DSDS Halbfinale im Fernsehen schauen.      Read more

      Bad Wiessee

      Endlich ging es heute los. Die Autofahrt war geprägt durch Baustellen, Vollsperrung der Autobahn und völlig genervte Autofahrer. Gegen 15 Uhr waren wir endlich hier. Nachmittag/Abend sind wir am See spazieren gegangen. Über die Berge zog ein Gewitter heran. Das Wasser im See ist nicht wirklich warm. Und so waren wir abends wieder im Hotel und genossen die Sauna. Morgen geht's los mit einer Wanderung um den Tegernsee.Read more
