      Eating my feelings

      September 9, 2019 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 48 °F

      When it never stops raining

      1. Anchovy pizza (I ate the whole thing in about 15 minutes)

      2. Danube riverfish and potato salat

      3. Spaghetti alla carbonara. Pasta, eggs, pork, and cream: the highest density of calories in a food that was available after climbing a mountain

      4. Fried mountain cheese patties

      5. Ice cream, of course

      I'm still hungry

      Passau and Vilshofen

      September 1, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Lots of overnight rain again, but turned very nice by 10 AM. Because of high water we could not dock in Passau. We docked about 20 minutes away and took a bus into the city. Today we did a nice walking tour since our bike tour was canceled because of rain. Because Passau is surrounded by three rivers streets have to be very small and narrow because there’s just not much room to build. Fifty-two thousand of the 12000 are students.

We saw a dedicated bike route along the Danube. You can drive the entire 600km journey from Budapest to Passau on the trail. A nice way to travel unless you are in a hurry. Our guide mentioned that she drives around 180 km/hr on the autobahn. They’ve driven as fast as 250 km/hr with no chance of a speeding ticket…. but only when they are in a hurry.

Bus drivers have a special talent here in Europe in these small towns. Narrow road, steep hills and sharp turns make it look impossible. But they pull it off. Terrifying at times.

After landing back at our boat for our sail to Vilshofen, we were informed that the river from Passau to Vilshofen was closed due to the high water and an inability to fit under the bridges… so back to Passau for a couple of hours before our Oktoberfest farewell celebration. Off to London vis Munich in the morning.

      Berlim - Viena

      August 19, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      Vilshofen

      June 14, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Today we visited the town closest to Hannah’s grandparents, Vilahofen (translated as farm on the river Vils) is a town situated next to the Danube. We enjoyed a leisurely work around the town and also went to the local “freibad,” or in English an outdoor swimming pool 🏊‍♂️. It was pretty cold as the it wasn’t heated but luckily the sun was nice and hot so as soon as you got out you soon warmed up!Read more

      Germany / For Erica

      August 11, 2017 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

      11th August 2017
Hi kid. I've attached some interior photos of the boat. Quiet nice but after being on a big cruise boat this is really different. Mostly old people on this boat...lot older. Sometime feels like a rest home where everyone looks forward to meal times. We have done all the outings so far. Bed is smaller then the hotels but comfy. They clean our room twice a day. Staff are friendly and professional.
Must admit the food is superb and presentation is fancy. We got invited to the Chef's table last night (similar to captains table). Got served 7 course dinner.....amazing flavours. We are blossoming.
Tomorrow we have to change ships. Apparently because of the river levels we can't proceed in this boat to Amsterdam. We are changing to the sister ship Ama Venita which is exactly the same as this boat Ama Reina.

      Kontich -> Deggendorf

      September 17, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

      Cycling river Danube

      June 20, 2020 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

It rained all night, so we were not too motivated to get up early. Instead, we enjoyed a longer breakfast and left around 9:30am when it stopped raining. We then had another awesome day with tailwinds, so rolling along the Danube was really easy and enjoyable.
In Deggendorf, I went grocery shopping. When I came out of the supermarket, there was a bad surprise: pouring rain and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Another 30-40km of cycling plus sleeping in a tent wasn't really an option anymore, so we checked out sleeping options in Deggendorf. Lucky, we found Oliver on the warmshowers website who replied immediately after I had sent him a message. He welcomed us in his a apartment and we cooked dinner together. So glad we had a roof and a view this night!

      Nočitev v Nemčiji ob Donavi

      July 10, 2019 in Germany
