Our last night in Bavaria

A few other odds and ends from our time in Bavaria...

Our day trips have included a lot of time driving on small country lanes in the rural parts of Bavaria. A few days ago we started to notice large piles of what looked like rocks from the distance, but up close, in fact, turn out to be large piles of swedes. These are apparently used as livestock feed during the winter.

There are also a LOT of solar panels covering the rooves of farmhouses and sheds in this part of the world. There are also a lot of wind turbines. We have passed one in particular most days as we head out on our day trip. It has been having problems, so a technician has been in attendance most mornings. All working when we came home last night. Finn wants a picture with it, as they are quite impressive.

We have also noticed a number of house doors in the villages have chalk writing on the tops of them. They will say things like 20*C+M+B+17. This is taken from a website:

The letters are an abbreviation of the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat: “May Christ bless the house.” The “*” represents the star of Bethlehem. The “+” signs represent the cross, and the “20” at the beginning and the “16” at the end mark the year in question. Taken together, this inscription is performed as a request that Christ bless the homes so marked and those who live there. The chalking of doors is a popular tradition on Epiphany or Dreikönigstag in southern Germany.

Craig has been convinced the bells outside our bedroom ring all night. I've thought they stopped at midnight and recommenced at 6am. Last night he recorded them at 3am, 4am and 5am. They go all night! Crazy.Les mer

Rotenburg ob der Tauber - wie schön

Leider erst bei Sonneuntergang angekommen. Es dauerte doch wie immer eine ganze Weile, bis wir wegkamen. Rotenburg fasziniert mich immer wieder und wir haben auch ganz gut zu dritt im Wohnmobil geschlafen ich mit Tom unter dem Dach. Vormittags, bevor wir losfahren wollten, ist uns eine Frau ins Wohnmobil gefahren und hat Fahrerflucht begangen hat. Zum Glück hat sie nicht allzu großen Schaden angerichtet, dass wir nach losfahren konnten aber das war schon der Hammer, mitten am Tag in so einer belebten Straße Fahrerflucht zu begehen. Bin gespannt, ob man sie findet es gab nämlich eine Zeugin, die gesehen hat wie sie weggefahren ist.Les mer

Medieval Rothenburg

Headed out on the bus (too early..ha). I was so lucky that Colleen said something about phone cords. As soon as she said it I realized I'd left mine in the room, and I was able to run and get it before leaving. Whew. I've noticed a lot of red poppies with black centers along the side of the road. Reminds me of the California poppies in California.

We had an incredible view from our room. Right out of a fairytale.
We checked out the Crime and Punishment museum, which was okay. I like walking around the town better though. Dinner was great at a local restaurant. I, of course, made sure mine included spatzael. We both had the meatloaf. Nearly everywhere we've been the toads are cobblestones. Interesting with the mdds...Les mer

I found kitties, of course, in the window of a closed shop.
We experienced our first European thunderstorm. It was quite spectacular the way the sound bounced off the walls of the city. We decided not to walk the wall that goes around the city, to preserve our energy and the skin on John's head, since the cover is rather low.Les mer

Rothenberg ob der Tauber

Well preserved medieval town in the Franconia region of Bavaria. The town is located on a bluff high above the river Tauber. It is also a few hundred meters from where 2 major medieval trade routes crossed. The original castle was built up on the bluff in the 11th century but was destroyed by an earthquake in the 14th Century. The last picture is of the Castle Gardens located on the former castle site.
The 1st picture is of the market square. The 2nd is also on the square but catches the glockenspiel on the hour that remembers the legend that tells of the mayor (in the right hand window) during the 30 years war who chugged a gallon of wine to get the general (in the other window) to defend the city.
Rothenburg o d T has one of the few in tact (restored) city walls. The 3rd picture looks along the covered walkway on the wall. The 4th picture was taken from the top of a tower along the city wall. You can see the wall with it's covered walkway.

Magical day in Germany

After two nights of sleeping all in one room it is good to have our own space again. We didn't start to surface until 8am. It looked cold and miserable outside. Dave and I walked across the park to the bakery. On the way home it started to snow, we got very excited as it was heavier than we had seen before. After our German breakfast we planned to head out of town to Bamberg. We bought a travel pass, but we had to buy a seperate one for Kellie as she was over 18. It cost the same amount as the pass for the 3 of us. As we can use it again on Sunday we decided to go to Rothenburg. The Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas shops are there and are not open on Sundays. The train out there wasn't for another hour and a half. Kellie & Dave worked out another way to get there. It was an enjoyable trip with 3 changes of trains, a lot easier without luggage. Brodie was excited as there was snow everywhere and it was getting thicker as we went on. We walked into the old walled town and by this time it was 1pm, time for lunch. It always takes a while for us to find somewhere to eat that ticks all our boxes. It started to snow again and it was just beautiful. We had a lovely lunch, pork schnitzel, which is like eating chicken. While we were eating lunch the snow got heavier. I can't put it into words how it felt sitting there eating lunch while it was snowing outside. 'Magical'. After lunch we had a look in the shops and we went into one of the six Käthe Wohlfahrt shops and wow it is beautiful. It would be like how I remember the Magic Cave as a kid. We bought a few more fragile things to get home as if we don't already have enough!. We hadn't eaten for an hour or so, we had a coffee and triedna traditional pastry ??? Translates into snowball. Bits of pastry formed into a ball and deep fried then sprinkled in icing sugar. There are different variations of it, but we stuck to the traditional one. The kids and Dave had a game of snow cricket in the town square, I was still in the shops. We started heading back to the train station and before we left the old town we decided to climb and walk the old town wall. We decided to keep walking and miss the next train. We eventually got back to the train station and had missed one by 10 minutes. The next one was at 6.10pm, a 50 minute wait. It was a cold wait. Our 3rd train we had to catch was delayed by an hour so we had to hop on another. It was a long trip home, picked up some pizzas from the supermarket at the railway station. Back at our apartment by 9pm. A long day but a good day.

. Mit dem Nepomuck per Landvergnügen auf einen kleinen Hof in Neusitz gefahren. Von dort erst mal Frühstück mit frisch gebackenem Brot mit Blick auf Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Die Beiden machen das nicht weil sie was verkaufen möchten sondern mit Herzblut um Menschen kennen zu lernen und zusammen zu sitzen 🥂.
Dann mit dem Rad eine gemütliche Rundtour und Stadt besichtigen 🤩👍🏻Les mer

Rothenburg Clock Tower

The building’s clock tower chimes every hour on the hour between 10 am and 10 pm, two doors open on either side of the clock face to reenact the legendary story of the brave mayor who drank nearly a gallon of wine in order to save his city.

The famous “Legend of the Master Draught” is said to have occurred in 1631, during the Thirty Years’ War. The protestant town of Rothenburg was seized by the imperial army led by a man named Count Tilly, a Catholic. Count Tilly was going to destroy the town, plunder the citizens, and execute many of the residents. The town tried to placate Count Tilly. They begged him for mercy. They tried to bribe him. All pleas fell on deaf ears. Finally, at the Ratstrinkstube, the town offered him a huge tankard of the best local wine. This succeeded in changing his mood. As Count Tilly drank from the tankard, which held 3.25 litres of wine, he thought it would be funny to toy with people and challenged the townsfolk that if they could drink the entire tankard all in one drink without stopping, he would spare the town but he would execute anyone who failed.

The mayor of the town, a man named Bürgermeister Nusch, bravely agreed to the challenge and successfully drank the entire tankard in one draught. Count Tilly was sufficiently impressed and good to his word he left the town unharmed. The town was saved! The townsfolk were clearly so proud of the drinking capabilities of their mayor they continued to tell the legend. In 1881, a play was written based on the story, and every year since the town has held a reenactment of the proud event during the local festival, in which hundreds of citizens dress up and celebrate the Master Draught.Les mer
