      Today was our first day with Rainer, our nephew, and his wife Olivia. We drove 2 hours from their apt. and spent the day in Leipzig. Leipzig was part of the former East Germany. I learned a lot about what life in the former East Germany was like and also about the uprisings that caused the wall to fall and the reunification of Germany.
      The first pic is of the 4 of us in Leipzig. Pic 2, a painting on the side of a building expressed the frustration of the people. Some of the sayings: “we are the people” “freedom” “free elections” “freedom of the press” “ the wall has to go” “democracy”. (Unfortunately my pics are a little out of order..) Pic 7 is of Nikolai Kirche and pic 3 is the inside of the church. It all started at this church with prayers for freedom on Mondays at 5pm. That evolved into peaceful demonstrations in the streets of Leipzig that lead to the fall of East Germany. Stepping out of that church and walking along the streets suddenly took on new meaning today after I read the history of what had happened here.
      Pics 4,5 & 6 are some of the buildings in the city.
      Pic 8 is the university library and pic 9 is the “assembly hall and university church of St Paul” that is attached to the library.
      The East Germans demolished the church in 1968. The church was rebuilt after the reunification but is now used sometimes as a church and sometimes as a lecture hall.
      The last pic shows the contrast between the plain, functional architecture of the East German era and the historic building in background. We visited an exhibit titled East Germany: 1945 to the Reunification. Such an eye opening, thought provoking exhibit.

      kolossales Leipzig

      Leipzig ist groß und monumental. Lore ist von den riesigen, martialischen Gebäuden einerseits beeindruckt, andererseits fühlt sie sich bedrängt.
      Als erstes Ziel steuern wir das Völkerschlachtsdenkmal an. Es liegt ein wenig außerhalb des Zentrums, hat eine beängstigende Größe (man kommt sich wie eine Ameise vor) und erinnert an nazionalsozialistische Heldendenkmäler.
      Das Bauwerk wurde 1913 eingeweiht - 100 Jahre nachdem die europäischen Verbündeten in der Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig Napoleon und seine Truppen in die Flucht geschlagen hatten.
      Als nächstes fahren wir ins Zentrum. Zuerst folgen wir einer Empfehlung aus dem heutigen Hotel und besuchen die Aussichtsplattform am Dach des Panorama Towers. Das Wetter ist prima und wir sehen super auf die Altstadt und weit ins Land hinein.
      Ein kleiner Altstadtbummel schließt den Leipzig-Besuch ab. Die Mädler-Passage ist eine elegante Einkaufsmeile und die Nikolaikirche lässt Gänsehaut-Feeling aufkommen weil die hier stattfindenden Demonstrationen wesentlich zum Fall der innerdeutschen Mauer beigetragen haben.      Read more

      Mit dem Zug gings fein gemütlich zeitig nach Leipzig. Uiiiii und dann auch hier Corona Attacke... Alle Museen sind geschlossen 🙈
      Aber zwei Touris schreckt sowas nicht ab, es gibt genug zu sehen. Ein paar eingefleischte Cosplayer sind ebenfalls anzutreffen. Wahnsinn, die Kostüme waren schon cool 😎.
      Und eine Ruhe war hier. Allein deshalb hat sich der Ausflug schon gelohnt, wann sonst hat man eine ganze Stadt fast für sich alleine 😍.
      Und was macht man da? Naja Shopping bietet sich an und Sonne genießen und Ruhe tanken....

      Und 👗 Yes
      Dank Pin Up 56 bin ich nun stolze Besitzerin eines 👗, eines Petticoats und Accessoires.
      😍Abends mit dem Zug zurück nach Nürnberg... Uffff der Zug hat technische Probleme. Kurzes Nachdenken und dann ja wir fahren heim.
      Menschenleere Straßen, keine Autos, fast niemand unterwegs.

      A day of two halves today after a fabulous breakfast at Central Cafe. We first caught the train to the Völkerschlactdenkmal, or Monument to the Battle of the Nations. The Monument remembers the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, a defeat of Napoleon but in which almost a fifth of soldiers died and was the biggest open battle ever. The massive monument looked amazing under the bright sunshine and with the reflecting pool in front of it, which was also full of fish and had huge dragonflies dancing on the surface.

      For the afternoon, we headed to Leipzig Zoo, where we eventually spent over 5 hours! The massive zoo included an African zone, South American Zone, an Aquarium, Koala House and more. There were only a few animals we couldn't see, like the hippos, seals and dwarf mongoose. Most however, we could spy out, including fabulous meerkats, giraffes and a baby orangutan. We even had cake a beer overlooking the zebras, ostriches and scimitar oryx.

      Vi stod op i Tyrol og kørte over og igennem bjergene. Der var en lang tunnel fuldstændig lige gennem bjerget.
      Vi kørte mellem skyer og træer og bjergtoppe.
      Så kom vi til Tyskland og så gik det stærkt på autostradaen.
      8 timer kørte vi og kom til et skod værelse med fem senge og udsigt til toppen af et fladt indkøbscenter.
      Skyndte os videre ind til bymidten og der var straks bedre. Gågader, butikker, levende musik og parker. Drengen fik MacD og så var alle glade. Jeg fik en curry wurst i stedet. .      Read more

      Leipzig is the largest town in Saxony and is a major arts and education center. On addition to musicians mentioned in the Thomaskirche post, Goethe studied at the renowned university here, too.
      While Leipzig was bombed during world war 2, it was not as heavily damaged as other cities. So there are more pre-war buildings here. The 1st picture is of the old Town Hall along one side of the market square. The 2nd picture is a better look at the market square. The 3rd and 4th pictures are looks at a couple of streets scenes.
      Another thing Leipzig is famous for is the "passages" throughout the city. These are covered and enclosed walkways through buildings. There are a couple dozen of them. The most well known is the Mädler Passage which is shown in the 5th picture.
      The last picture is another nod to the artistic and musical heritage of the city. This is a display of baroque period musical instruments.      Read more

      Am 18.03. (nach dem JGA von Anni) ging es los und jetzt sind schon wieder 19 Tage vorbei.
      Wir haben etwa eine Strecke von 3.500 km mit dem Auto zurückgelegt und sind 165 km gelaufen. Die längsten Wanderungen waren auf den Rob Roy mit 22 km und Tongariro Alpine Crossing mit 15 km. Wir haben Pinguine, Robben, Fasane und Kiwis gesehen.Read more

      mit tram 15 in die stadt. nach orientierungsschwierigkeiten haben uns 2 punker auf den richtigen weg geholfen. marktplatz mit markttag, thomaskirche, nikolaikirche und immer mal wieder die falsche richtung einschlagend geht es zu fuss durch leipzig. momo putzt die strasse von vielen leckereien sauber.Read more
