    My route is ready!

    12 Agustus 2023, Swiss ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Yeah, it took me a while to decide for Costa Rica.

For a long time I wanted to drive by truck 🚛 through Central Asia. I've been thinking back and forth with Frank and Lech for a long time. For this tour we need at least 10 people, otherwise the long drive and the fuel is not worth it.

At the beginning of 2022 nothing came of it because the trip through Ukraine was out of the question due to the war there. Then in autumn 2022 the second plan was to drive there across the Black Sea 🌊, but then the Russian fleet moved there.

This fall we planned to drive round the Turkish coast of the Black Sea but we didn't get enough people together. Long story short, I came up with an alternative. 😍

A road trip through Chile came into consideration, from Tierra del Fuego to the Atacama desert, but 3 weeks wasn't enough and Peru was just a bit too touristy for me.

That's how I stumbled across Costa Rica and I'm going to cruise through there by bus. So tadaaaaa this it is: Costa Rica! And this is my route ❤️.

  • After the journey is before the journey

    6 September 2023, Jerman ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

I’m not really back to normal after Vienna because I don't get to do much work this week, since tomorrow I'm going to the "agile by nature" until Saturday.

But this evening I definitely wanted to repair my long summer pants so that I have something against the mosquitoes in Costa Rica. I still have to look for my plug adapter... in any case, I'll get an overview of my tropical equipment tonight and the postcard is already ready.

Then I'll be working hard for the next week and the week after that and then I'll hopefully start well equipped - it's cool if you can somehow pull everything out of a drawer...

Ooooooh aaaaaaaah a new adventure…. ooooooooh!

  • Eary, early, early in the morning…

    25 September 2023, Jerman ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

… I‘m leaving and found out, that there is a direct „night bus“ from my home to the airport - awesome 🤩❤️.

So here I am *yawn* 🥱 ready for the first stage to Paris Charles de Gaulle. I took my hammock in my hand luggage and I‘m curious if I will be able to set it up somewhere in a calm corner of the airport 🤣. I have 6 hours in Paris before the connection flight leaves, so a cosy spot would be nice 🤪.

I will keep you posted with a pic 🤣.

  • Paris - Charles de Gaulle

    25 September 2023, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

There are pillars! But unfortunately they are far too far apart. Such a crap, so no hammock in the airport today... 🙄

But I have a very calm place in the sun ☀️ with a power plug and there's a piano 🎹, so maybe I'll play something later 🎼🎶🎵.

Now it's breakfast time, I brought some cheese 🧀. And next to my place there are croissants 🥐 at Brioche Dorée 😋.

Oh and atm a guy started playing the piano ❤️ so maybe time won't get too long...

  • Hello Costa Rica!

    25 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

Omg, my suitcase was the last one! 😱
I was already “looking forward” to the lost baggage office 😳 phew…

First impression: everything is going quite well here. Immigration is well coordinated and has enough counters open and the airport is clean and manageable. After 6 hours of Charles de Gaulle and an 11 hour flight, I really appreciate that! I'm already looking forward to my bed 🛌.Baca selengkapnya

  • From airport San José to Fleur de Lys

    25 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

After I withdrew some money, I found my driver and thought: well, I'm looking forward to the first impressions while driving through the town…

Of course, the first adventure was a blast, because halfway through the city all the lights on the dashboard went out and the windshield wipers became slower and slower. Not quite so ideal when it's raining heavily - and it was already dark - a kind of blind ride.

The indicator didn't work anymore either, but the headlights - well at least something! The fun was probably due to the rain and my driver nervously started making phone calls.

The windshield wiper was still getting slower and slower and started to stop in the middle - was that an accident at the side of the road? I couldn’t see anything anymore.

At some point the rain got lighter and I thought: at least something, hopefully he won't stall the car and then it won't start again.

But when the rain lessened, at some point the fittings started to flicker again and then they glowed continuously again. Finally I arrived at the hotel save and sound (but it was already dark, this are only canned photos).

So this is my hotel: a small, charming hotel in the cultural district of San José. Instead of numbers, each room is named after a type of flower native to Costa Rica. Local artwork hangs on the walls of each room, lobby and corridors of the hotel. Wood everywhere and soft colors make it quite cute and the atrium gardens are full of lush tropical plants.

But I don't really get anything out of the hotel. I'm lying in bed and looking forward to going to sleep and tomorrow at 7 I‘ll drive to the national park.

    What a day!!!

  • Shuttle 2 Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio

    26 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

My first daylight drive through Costa Rica! 🤗❤️

I always find it very exciting to write 📝 down my first impressions when I travel through a country for the first time.

So the first thing I noticed here in Costa Rica were the police officers 👮 on their fancy bikes 🚲🚲. Some also have brand new motocross machines 🏍️. Very modern...

In general, it's tidy here, there's hardly any trash on the side of the road and the shuttle buses have internet. That's right - I'm on a "shuttle bus" 🚌.

These are a kind of collective taxis like Moia in Hamburg. They connect interesting places 🌋 and hotels 🏨 and can be booked online; there are several providers. So that's a bit more expensive 💰 than public busses but way cheaper than a rental car 🚗. Up to 9 people fit in, we were 5.

There is quite a lot of traffic in San José, but outside of it, it gets better. The city is full of flat, colorful houses 🏩🏩🏩.
The condition of the roads is quite good and in the city you drive up and down hills like in San Francisco.

In the countryside for sure it is even more hilly ⛰️, there are beautiful mountain peaks everywhere and of course everything is lush green, tropical.
That's why, like so often in the tropics, the city has extremely high curbs - that's shit for loading cars... and there are huge sewage ditches along the streets outside the city.

Yeah well, and as usual in Central America everything is air-conditioned...

One thing really struck me: I saw a lot of birds of prey on my way - in real packs 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅, how unusual. Later on I found out these are vultures and it’s totally normal for them to look for food in packs - they even have different roles in the pack…

So these are my first impressions, I'm excited to see what else will happen in the next three weeks.

  • Hotel Manuel Antonio

    26 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

After 4.5 hours bus 🚌 drive I arrived at the hotel 🏡 - I really like it. It's only a 5-minute walk to the main entrance of the national park 🦜 and I'm looking directly at the Pacific 🌊.

Of course I jumped right in, but it's not refreshing at all. There are also crocodiles 🐊 at this end of the sandy beach, you shouldn't go closer than 50 meters, so I didn't want to swim for that long 🤪. The hotel is almost empty and the beach is mine! ❤️

Tomorrow I'm going on a little national park tour and I'm really excited to see what I'll discover 🔍.

  • Toucan, sloth, hummingbird and more

    27 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Today I met Mauro at 8 o'clock ⏰ in the morning at the entrance of Parque Manuel Antonio for a tour 🥾.

Mauro is a guide I found through Airbnb 🏩. He lives for his job and has been giving tours in the national park for 8 years.

Since I was the only guest, I was able to ask him all questions coming to my mind, which he was able to answer. His knowledge is very comprehensive.

Since I was traveling alone with him, his telescope 🔭 was "mine" 🤪, so to speak. We hiked through the jungle 🌴 for just over 2 hours, stopping again and again to observe and photograph 📷 all kinds of animals through the telescope.

What a great experience and what an enthusiastic nature watcher Mauro is. If you're here, get in touch with him, it's worth it: https://air.tl/Dz8vGdlz

I though it would be crowded but since it's the rainy season, there wasn't much going on. So tomorrow I'll go through the park alone again because I really enjoyed it 🕊️🦥🐒🦋🕸️🕷️🦗🐜🌸🌺🪴🌴

  • Playa Manuel Antonio & Espadilla Sur

    27 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

In the Manuel Antonio National Park there are a few beaches that are definitely worth a visit 🏝️❤️

But beware of the monkeys 🐒! They open every unattended backpack and claw with preference things that are in plasic bags. Probably because they have learned that something could be delicious to eat in it 🌮🍪.

Back to the beaches 🏝️ ... These are beautiful and spared beach bars and dealers - wonderful! And since there is an entrance fee, there are not many people. In addition, a beautiful wind blows from the sea.

You can't call it cool but really pleasant in the tropics, especially as the water 🌊 is so warm, that it is not really refreshing.

I really liked the beaches and since they are around the corner, I'll go back tomorrow ❤️❤️❤️.

  • Gallo pinto & ceviche

    28 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

I already have two favorite dishes here - gallo pinto for breakfast and ceviche in different varieties as main meal ❤️.

The rest of the time I eat fruit 🍍🍑🥝🥥🍋🥭🍌🫐 and drink fruit smoothie 😋.

Gallo pinto is traditional breakfast dish in Costa Rica, consisting of rice and beans as a base and has a long history and importance to Costa Rican identity and culture.

The beans in gallo pinto are quickly cooked until the juice is almost consumed, then combined with prepared rice and other ingredients such as cooked bell peppers, coriander, chopped onions, and garlic.

Ceviche is a cold dish consisting of fish or shellfish marinated in citrus and seasonings. Different versions of ceviche are part of the culinary culture of various Spanish-American countries along the Pacific Ocean.

Some of the most frequently used citrus fruits are lemon and sour lime, although sour orange was historically used. The dressing also includes chili pepper and coriander and the fish is usually marinated together with sliced onion.

The ceviche accompaniments can be different: plantain, patagones/tostones, tortilla chips or chifles patacones.

In short: I could get used to it ❤️🤣.

  • Quepos

    28 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Today I took the bus 🚌 to Quepos. I had a few things on the shopping list 📃 and had to get into the authentic life of Costa Rica.

Quepos is really a typical Central American small town. Lots of colorful low-rise buildings 🏩🏩🏩 and one crowded store after another. The people are in a good mood 😊 and friendly, everyone says hello 👋 and no one is annoying. You can buy everything and the hustle and bustle is concentrated around the central bus 🚍 station. In short: Feels like home for me ❤️.

For sure it has a history: It is named for the native Quepo Indians who inhabited the place in the colonial era.

In 1563, Spanish Catholic conquistadores, settled the area and founded the settlement of San Bernardino de Quepo. The local native Quepo people were then subsequently subjugated.

In 1746, the Quepo people that remained were transferred to a reservation which already contained another native ethnic group.

Nowadays Quepos offers fishing for numerous varieties of fish, especially Pacific Sailfish. Peak fishing season is from November to April for billfish.

It has a tropical monsoon climate with moderate to little rainfall from January to March and heavy to very heavy rainfall in the remaining months, most in September and October 🤪.

So I strolled around, bought some stuff and went to a soda... what a soda is? Check out the next entry for that 😜.

  • Sodas

    28 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Soda is the name given to small restaurants in Costa Rica that receive tax support from the state and do not have an alcohol 🍻 license.

This allows prices 💰 to be kept at a low level. You can find sodas everywhere in Costa Rica, just not in purely tourist towns. They are mainly visited by the local population, but also by tourists.

A soda usually serves typical Costa Rican dishes such as Gallo Pinto. There is an obligation to serve certain main dishes (Casados), most often these are dishes of rice and beans (Arroz con frijoles) with fried beef, chicken or fish and with fried plantains and salad. Sometimes the food in sodas is also offered as a buffet.

    And now I'm full 🤣🤣🤣.

  • More hammocks for the world!

    28 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

I hung out in my hammock on the beach 🏝️, peering 👀 into the sky again and watching the tons of vultures 🦅 circling above me at a considerable height.

I wondered where they would find carrion here on the beach for so many hungry beaks.

The jackdaws distracted me, I definitely think they are some kind of jackdaws, they are smart and steal things from tourists 🤣.

So there were six of the jackdaws and they were eyeing my hammock - they had never seen a world traveling hammock - when something flew over me with a long beak.

    A toucan!

I went after him and thought the jackdaws would take care of the hammock.

Soon some other people on the beach saw me staring at trees and joined in.

How lucky that I love staring at the sky in my hammock! That's proof we need to hang more in hammocks!

  • Soon leaving Manuel Antonio

    29 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

This early afternoon I will continue to Monteverde (green mountain) ⛰️ after three nights 🌟 in Manuel Antonio.

So I'm currently enjoying my breakfast 🥭🍚🥚☕ in the attached restaurant and can highly recommend it, the owner is so nice and sweet - no comparison to the tourist restaurants further north along the beach. I immediately felt comfortable and well looked after here and the food was great. Same goes for the hotel 🏨! Great service, awesome location.

Now I'm going across the street for a swim 🏊 in the sea 🌊 and will lie on the sand in the surf zone and let the water wash around me. I have found that this is the most comfortable place to be at this temperature and humidity 🤣.

In any case, I can definitely recommend Parque Manuel Antonio to you, just don't miss it when you're here 🦥🐒🦅🦜🐊🦋🐛🌸🥀🌺🌴🪴🌿! And if you ask me: take this hotel too, totally chilled out ❤️!

  • Living the postcard

    29 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

It's a really funny thing: yesterday I was hanging here in the hammock under the palm trees 🌴, the jungle 🌿 behind me, the surfing waves 🌊 in front of me, the vultures over me and then a toucan 🦜 flew by.

A few weeks ago, I was sitting in Germany and painted 🎨 exactly that.

Of course I had to write the postcards here - meaning to "paint" the back side before I write them. Like always, I brought the front printed out with me. So I sat down exactly where I saw the toucan yesterday and started.

Let's see when they'll be finished, it'll take a while - they'll anyway will take a long time for shipping. The last ones from Kos/Greece took 3 months and half from the ones from the Ionian Sea didn't arrive at all.

So if one arrives at your place at some point, let me know and remember: I wrote the card exactly at the spot, which I drew on the front - what a coincidence ❤️.

  • On my way to Monte Verde

    29 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

Today I had the shuttle bus all to myself. Great 🤪❤️. I could sit left, right, back or front as I liked, depending on the best view. I stretched my legs anywhere - a XXXXL seat, so to speak.

The journey took a little longer than 4.5 hours and costed around EUR 53. Cool price, right?

The route is beautiful and the serpentines lead up to the "green mountain" for quite some time. Towards the end, however, the route becomes quite holey at times, but that doesn't matter, it just takes a little longer.

Now I'm definitely in the middle of the cloud forest and I'm really excited about tomorrow ☺️.

I woke up this morning and I simply love ❤️ it. Jungle view 🌴🪴🌿🌱 from my bed 😍.

  • Cala Lodge, Monte verde

    30 September 2023, Kosta Rika ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Here in Monte Verde I live in the Cala Lodge and I really like it 😍.

I have a room up between the treetops with a balcony facing the jungle. Especially at night and in the morning you can hear all kinds of noises from the jungle.

It's monsoon, so I can not only watch the funny coatis 🐻, monkeys 🐒 and many birds 🦜 from the balcony, but also the lightning ⚡ from the thunderstorm - even from my bed through that Panoramic window.

The hotel has a great restaurant for breakfast. There you can sit and watch the hummingbirds sip flowers 🌺 and the birds eat fruit 🍌. Butterflies 🦋 are buzzing around everywhere and the monkeys and coatis are roaming around the house - great - you don't want to leave here ❤️.
