The next day, the next places to explore. For us the city of Launceston is just one of many not really nice cities in Australia, but there is something special here: The Cataract Gorge. The Gorge is located in the middle of the city and a great place to start the day with. We even found some wallabies and a lot of peacocks. On the other side Launceston is located in the Tamar Valley, which is a famous wine region and of course we tried some wines here as well.

Für uns hat Launceston eigentlich nicht viel zu bieten ist aber trotzdem der perfekte Ausgangspunkt für die Region. Los ging es heute mit der Cataract Gorge, einer Schlucht mitten in der Innenstadt von Launceston. Hier haben wir sogar Kängurus und Pfaue gefunden. Außerdem liegt die Stadt in der Weinregion des Tamar Valley, weshalb wir natürlich auch mal wieder ein paar Weine probieren konnten.Lue lisää

Floating Sauna & Lillydale Falls

After the Bay of Fires we continued to Launceston, the second largest town of Tasmania. But before we got there we stopped at Lake Derby, because there is a floating sauna on the lake. The girls went in for an hour including a few jumps into the refreshing lake. A really cool experience.
Back on the road we passed the Lillydale Falls so we explored them as well.

Nach der Bay of Fires ging es weiter nach Launceston, der zweitgrößten Stadt Tasmaniens. Doch auf dem Weg gab es noch ein kleines Highlight: Lake Derby! Ein See in den Bergen mit einer schwimmenden Sauna bin der man ins Wasser springen kann? Klingt cool, war es auch. Es war zwar recht unmöglich genügend freie Plätze in unserem engen Zeitfenster zu finden da maximal 5 Leute pro Session (eine Stunde) in die Sauna durften, aber so sind die Mädels einfach alleine gegangen und wir konnten eine kurze Wanderung machen.
Auf der weiteren Fahrt sind wir dann noch an den Lillydale Falls vorbei gekommen. Kleine aber feine Wasserfälle.Lue lisää

Bay of Fires

Red stones, white sands, crystal clear and freezing cold waters. That's probably the best description of the Bay of Fires. The whole coast line we drove past today was amazing. At the Bay of Fires we stopped for a swim on our private, perfect beach. Water temperature 16°C. Brrr but beautiful!

Wenn man die Bay of Fires beschreiben müsste würde man sagen: Rote Steine, feinster weißer Sandstrand (der quischt wenn man drüber geht), kristallklares aber eiskaltes Wasser (16°C). Wir waren natürlich auch in einer der vielen traumhaften Buchten baden und das ganz alleine - ein Traum!Lue lisää

Freycinet - Austern, Wein & Pinguine

The area around the Freycinet National Park has more to offer than just the national park itself. It is a wine region, famous for oysters, has beautiful beaches and every evening the little penguins are coming on shore.

Die Region um den Freycinet Nationalpark hat mehr zu bieten als nur den Park an sich. Frische Austern, Wein, Strände und Pinguine gibt es hier noch zu entdecken und wir haben heute alles davon gesehen bzw. probiert. Lediglich von den Pinguinen gibt es kein Foto, weil sie viel zu scheu sind und wir sie nur aus einiger Entfernung gesehen haben.Lue lisää

Wineglass Bay

We drove around 200km to the north into the Freycinet National Park to see the Wineglass Bay. We only made it to the lookout of the bay on top of the hill because we haven't had enough time for a much longer hike but it was still beautiful. After the hike we went snorkeling at one of the bays in the national park.

Es wurde Zeit für uns die Halbinsel zu verlassen und es ging knapp 200km gen Norden in den Freycinet Nationalpark. Hier wollten wir die Wineglass Bay erkunden, allerdings haben wir es nur bis zum Aussichtspunkt geschafft. Eine noch längere Wanderung hätten wir heute zeitlich nicht mehr geschafft. Stattdessen sind wir in eine der anderen Buchten des Nationalparks gefahren um uns abzukühlen und ein bisschen zu Schnorcheln.
Leider ist mir hier Wasser in unsere noch relativ neue GoPro gelaufen :( Demnach gibt es wohl für eine Weile keine Unterwasserbilder mehr...Lue lisää

The last historic site on the peninsula we visited this morning. Some of the deported convicts were working in a coal mine just a few kilometers away from our cottage. We walked around there to explore the site and found a lot of wallabies as well.

Die letzte historische Sehenswürdigkeit für uns auf der Halbinsel war eine Kohlemine in der die deportierten Sträflinge arbeiten mussten und in winzigen Zellen Leben mussten. Neben der Geschichte haben wir aber auch einige Wallabies hier gefunden.Lue lisää

The last highlights of the Tasman Peninsula were all located on the wild east side of the Peninsula. We visited a blow hole, the Tasman Arch, Devils Kitchen, Patterson's Arch and ended the day at the Waterfall Bay. The whole coast line at this part of the peninsula is amazing but especially the waterfall bay is pretty cool with a waterfall falling directly into the sea.

Die letzten Highlights der Tasmanischen Halbinsel sind alle an der wilden Ostküste gelegen. Wir haben uns ein Blow Hole, den Tasman Arch, Devils Kitchen, den Patterson's Arch und die Waterfall Bay angesehen. Die Steilküste ist generell sehr beeindruckend aber vor allem der Blick in die Waterfall Bay ist richtig cool.Lue lisää

After the historical part we enjoyed a swim and a picnic on a beautiful white beach before we continued to see the remarkable caves. The water is so clear, but with only 18 degrees freezing cold as well.

Nachdem wir genug gelernt haben ging es weiter zum Picknick an einen der vielen Traumstrände. Das Wasser hier ist kristallklar aber leider auch echt kalt (18 Grad). Gestärkt ging es danach weiter zur Remarkable Cave.Lue lisää

In the 19th century the British Empire deported a lot of criminals to Port Arthur. So we started our day exploring the historical site of Port Arthur.

Im 19. Jahrhundert wurden viele kriminelle aus dem Vereinigten Königreich nach Tasmanien und vor allem in das Arbeitslager von Port Arthur deportiert. Daher haben wir heute morgen mit einer weiteren Geschichtsstunde begonnen.Lue lisää

Auf dem Weg zur Tasman Peninsula

Before we actually left Hobart today we stopped at the Cascades Female Factory museum to learn something about the dark history of Tasmania. Also we visited Cascades Brewery for some great beers and a good lunch.
In the early afternoon we drove to the Tasman Peninsula and already found the first amazing landscapes.

The next couple of days we are traveling with Gaia and Fabio, an Italian couple we met the first time in Geelong over a year ago. One of the good things about this is that we can now rent nice small houses for comparable small money. For the next two nights we rented a small but amazing cottage with a great sea view from our bed. Could be worse!

Heute ging es von Hobart auf die Tasman Peninsula, doch bevor es los ging haben wir uns schon mal ein bisschen mit der dunklen Vergangenheit Tasmaniens auseinander gesetzt und die Cascade Female Factory besucht. Es handelt sich dabei um ein Arbeitslager von deportierten Frauen aus England. Nach der Geschichtsstunde haben wir uns noch in der Cascade Brewery gestärkt und dann ging es raus aus der Stadt.

Die Landschaft ist schon auf der kurzen Fährt auf die Halbinsel beeindruckend auch wenn wir noch nicht so viel gesehen haben. Die nächsten Tage reisen wir auch nicht mehr alleine sondern zusammen mit Gaia und Fabio einem italienischen Pärchen. Wir haben die beiden vor mehr als einem Jahr auf einem Campingplatz in Geelong (bei Melbourne) kennengelernt und sind seitdem in Kontakt geblieben. Ein großer Vorteil ist auch, dass wir jetzt kleine Häuser mieten können die wir uns zu zweit nicht hätten leisten wollen. Für die nächsten zwei Nächte haben wir jetzt sogar Meerblick aus unserem Bett. Könnte schlimmer sein oder?Lue lisää

Next day, next adventure: Today we hiked through the Mt Field National Park and saw three waterfalls. Especially the Russel Falls were one of the nicest ones we have seen so far.

Nächster Tag, nächstes Abenteuer: Heute sind wir durch den Mount Field Nationalpark gewandert. Auf dem Weg ging es vorbei an den Russel Falls, Horseshoe Falls und den Lady Barron Falls. After we picked up our rental car we started exploring Tasmania. We drove around some fjords and enjoyed the landscape. In the evening we ended up at Mount Wellington and we were able to get an awesome picture of the Aurora Australis.

Nachdem wir unseren Mietwagen abgeholt haben ging es sofort los. Wir sind der Küste und den Fjorden gefolgt bevor wir den Tag auf Mount Wellington ausklingen haben lassen. Nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit konnten wir sogar die südlichen Polarlichter fotografieren. Es war zwar ziemlich kalt auf knapp 1300m Höhe aber es hat sich gelohnt.Lue lisää

Goodbye Mackay! Hallo Tasmanien!

It is time for us to continue traveling and to leave the Mackay Region. We quit our jobs in the Haliday Bay and hopped on a plane to explore Tasmania.

It sounds very easy but it was complicated - first our return flight was cancelled and we needed to rebook, then we got up early to take the plane to Brisbane at 6am, but the plane was broken and the flight delayed. After waiting for more than 5 hours we were rebooked again and made it to Brisbane. Of course we missed our connecting flight in Brisbane as well so we got rebooked again. This time to an afternoon flight with Qantas. Good news: we finally made it to Tasmania, bad news: because of the time differences we arrived too late to pick up our rental car so we needed to take a uber to our motel and we have to return to the airport tomorrow to pick up our car. Tomorrow we can start exploring Tasmania then!

Es ist wieder an der Zeit in den Urlaubsmodus zu schalten. Wir haben unsere Jobs gekündigt und wollen jetzt Tasmanien entdecken.

Dafür sollte es heute Morgen per Flugzeug von Mackay über Brisbane bis nach Hobart gehen. Klingt einfach, ist es aber nicht. Vor zwei Tagen wurde bereits unser Rückflug ersatzlos gestrichen, weshalb wir ein erstes Mal umbuchen mussten. Heute waren wir pünktlich um 5 Uhr morgens am Flughafen in Mackay doch leider ist unser Flugzeug kaputt gegangen. Nach knapp sechs Stunden Wartezeit wurden wir schließlich auf einen anderen Flug nach Brisbane gebucht. Dort angekommen war es natürlich viel zu spät für unseren planmäßigen Weiterflug und da es auch kein anderen Flug von Virgin Australia mehr gab wurden wir erneut umgebucht. Am Ende ging es weiter mit Qantas, aber wir haben es bis nach Tasmanien. Leider sind wir nur zu spät angekommen um unseren Mietwagen abzuholen. Jetzt müssen wir hoffen, dass wir ihn morgen noch bekommen und dann das Abenteuer Tasmanien beginnen können.Lue lisää

Another day off at work means time to explore the region. Today we drove into the Conway National Park to see the Cedar Creek Falls. It is also a perfect waterhole for a swim, especially right now with all the deadly jellyfish in the sea.

In two weeks we will finally leave the Haliday Bay to start the next big adventure: Tasmania! Soooo excited already!!!

Ein weiterer freier Tag an der Arbeit bedeutet für uns die Chance ein neues Wasserloch zum Baden zu finden,da im Meer vor unserer Tür zurzeit zu viele giftige Quallen schwimmen. Heute ging es daher in den Conway Nationalpark zu den Cedar Creek Falls. Eine perfekte Erfrischung!

Übrigens: In zwei Wochen verlassen wir die Haliday Bay endgültig denn dann geht es los mit dem nächsten großen Abenteuer: 2500km gen Süden wartet Tasmanien auf uns! Wir sind schon voller Vorfreude!!!Lue lisää

Red Cliff Island is an island just off the coast of Seaforth which is accessible on low tide only. So we explored it this afternoon - it was a nice walk after work with some great views.

Red Cliff Island ist eine Insel vor der Küste von Seaforth. Das besondere ist aber dass man die Insel während der Ebbe auch zu Fuß erreichen kann. Also haben wir die Insel heute nach der Arbeit mal erkundet. Vom höchsten Punkt konnten wir schöne Blicke über das Meer und die grünen Hügel genießen.Lue lisää

Finch Hatton Gorge

One of the places we haven't seen so far in the Mackay region was the Finch Hatton Gorge. After a lot if rain since Christmas all the walking tracks and roads were closed but finally we were able to visit the Gorge today. It was a lot of fun swimming in the waterholes and hiking through the very wet rainforest.

Finch Hatton Gorge ist einer der Orte die wir bisher noch nicht besucht haben seitdem wir in der Haliday Bay sind. Erst war es zu trocken um das Wasser durch die Schlucht fließen zu sehen und dann nach zwei Wochen starkem Regen war plötzlich alles überflutet. Heute hat es aber geklappt und wir hatten eine Menge Spaß beim schwimmen im kühlen Wasser.Lue lisää

Whitehaven Beach

One of the most famous and most beautiful beaches in Australia. Could there be a better place to spend time on the first advent?
It was the last highlight of our North Queensland vacation, from here we will return to the Haliday Bay in a couple of days time.

Whitehaven Beach ist der wahrscheinlich bekannteste Strand Australiens und sicherlich auch einer der schönsten! Wir haben hier den ganzen Tag verbracht und wären gerne noch länger geblieben.
Hier endet aber auch schon wieder unsere Reise durch den tropischen Norden Queenslands. Wir bleiben noch ein paar Tage in Airlie Beach, aber dann geht es zurück in die Haliday Bay, denn die Sommerferien stehen vor der Tür.Lue lisää

The next day in paradise and we climbed up another view point. We really enjoyed the great views over the Nelly Bay and Picnic Bay before we joined a sunset kayak tour in the Horseshoe Bay. During the tour huge sea turtles visited us - always amazing to see them.

Der letzte Tag im Paradies und für uns ging es mal wieder auf einen Aussichtspunkt. Heute konnten wir den Blick über die Nelly Bay und Picnic Bay schweifen lassen. Am Abend ging es dann auf eine Sonnenuntergangs Kajaktour, bei der uns riesige Schildkröten besucht haben. Leider waren sie immer nur kurz an der Oberfläche, weshalb es keine Fotos gibt aber es war richtig cool!Lue lisää

Kookaburras, Wallabies & einsame Buchten

Another day with another big hike. We explored the Arthur Bay, Florence Bay, Radical Bay, Horseshoe Bay and ended in the Geoffrey Bay. We found some kookaburras and rock wallabies and we also tried to find some Koalas but unfortunately we haven't found any.

Der nächste Tag mit einer großen Wanderung. Dieses Mal wollten wir einige Buchten und ein paar Tiereder Insel entdecken. Los ging es mit der Arthur Bad gefolgt von der Florence Bay, Radical Bay, Horseshoe Bay und am Ende ging es noch zu den Rock Wallabies in der Geoffrey Bay.
Leider haben wir keine Koalas gefunden aber zumindest ein paar Kookaburras.Lue lisää

Von der Nelly Bay zur Alma Bay

The next walk was a little tough. From the Nelly Bay we climbed up the hills of the island to get some nice views before we ended our day in the Alma Bay.

Die zweite Tageswanderung war deutlich anstrengender als der gemütliche Spaziergang zum Wrack. Von der Nelly Bay, dem Hauptort der Insel ging es zu ein paar Aussichtspunkten in den Hügeln der Insel. Von dort ging es dann wieder steil bergab in die benachbarte Alma Bay wo wir den Abend bei ein paar Bier und einem Steak ausklingen lassen konnten.Lue lisää

Magnetic Island - SS City of Adelaide

We are on Magnetic Island just off the coast of Townsville now. After a relaxing day on the beach yesterday we started exploring the island today. First we did a walk to the very cool wreck of the SS City of Adelaide. Because of the low tide we were able to walk almost the whole way to the wreck :)

Jetzt sind wir auf Magnetic Island, einer kleinen Insel direkt vor der Küste von Townsville. Nach einem entspannten Strandtag gestern ging es für uns heute auf ein paar Wanderungen. Zuerst zum Wrack der SS City of Adelaide und Dank der Ebbe könnten wir auch bis fast zum Wrack laufen. :)Lue lisää

Big Crystal Creek mit Wasserrutsche

The big crystal creek in the Paluma Range National Park is a little gem. We have been here in October 2019 already and returned for a swim in the crystal clear waters of the creek today. We discovered a natural rockslide as well. So much fun!

Zurück am Big Crystal Creek im Paluma Range Nationalpark. Wir waren hier vor einem guten Jahr schon einmal doch weil es so schön ist haben wir hier einfach nochmal angehalten. Der Creek ist hat super klares, kühles Wasser und ist dadurch perfekt zum schwimmen geeignet. Dieses Mal haben wir auch noch eine coole Wasserrutsche entdeckt. :)Lue lisää

Wallaman Falls

The Wallaman Falls are Australia's highest single drop waterfall and for us one of the coolest showers ever. The hike to the bottom of the falls was pretty steep but once we jumped in the cold water we loved it.

Die nächsten Wasserfälle auf der Route sind die Wallaman Falls. Mit 269 Metern sind sie der höchste frei fallende Wasserfall Australien und für uns damit ein Pflichtbesuch. Der Wanderweg zum unteren Ende des Wasserfalls war zwar ziemlich steil und anstrengend aber dafür war das Schwimmen unter dem Wasserfall dann richtig cool und erfrischend. Einziger Nachteil: Danach ging es wieder eine knappe Stunde bergauf.Lue lisää
