Wong Tai Sin Tempel / Nan Lian Garden

      May 1, 2023 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Kowloon and the other side of Hong Kong

      May 1, 2023 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

The 1st part if this post is in the Mong Kok section of Kowloon. The 2nd part is the other side of the tracks, literally and figuratively.
Mong Kok is an active commercial and touristy neighborhood. Hong Kong has long been a center for fish: 1st as a sleepy fishing village and later for tropical fish. The 1st picture is one of scores of shops selling everything you could want for your aquarium. Even tropical fish harvested elsewhere are shipped through here.
In the 2nd picture, the turtle to the left is the golden coin turtle. I'm told this species is the extinct in the wild due to traditional beliefs about healing powers of eating this. So I understand that they aren't supposed to be sold. It is also ridiculously expensive. I'm told that turtle is worth $25,000.
The next 2 pictures are are in the large flower market. There is a long tradition of flower marketing here. This market is located where the land of the colonial British met the land of the Chin Dynasty. The reason for the flower market had to do with colonials being mostly male intersecting with the world's oldest profession. In order to engage a prostitute, the client had to give flowers. If they were accepted, the deal got done. I can imagine a comedian making hay out of that history as it might relate to modern giving of flowers.
The 5th and 6th pictures are in the bird market. There are both song birds and various parrots. Like many things here, having birds is traditional.
The last 3 pictures are the other side of the tracks. This is a darker side of HK. Housing is a serious problem and very expensive. At the begining of communist rule on the mainland, so many people moved here that the population quintupled in 5 years. The city couldn't absorb that.
The 7th picture looks at the history of housing in response to the population explosion. To the right are older buildings, some as tall as 10 stories without an elevator that were thrown up quickly. To the left is a modern building built to new codes that are 30 stories and more.
It's the older buildings that I want to mention. Rents are so expensive in HK that apartments are subdivided into 100 sf units. That's only 10X10 or a very small bedroom in the US. The last 2 pictures are in one of these. These tiny apartments rent for more than the median income. So to rent one of these, you need to be earning more than what 1/2 the people earn.
You will notice the cage in the 8th picture. That's actually a rental subunit that costs about 2/3 of the minimum wage.
It was terribly hard to see, but this is the reality for most people here in what is by far the most expensive housing market in the world relative to local income.

      Fragrant Harbor

      October 23, 2023 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

In Cantonese the name Hong Kong means “Fragrant Harbor.” Maybe it was that once upon a time. Every city has a certain character, an ambience that is unique. Hong Kong, a megalopolis scattered across a dozen islands with different peoples, businesses, and socio-economic levels, is a kaleidoscope that defies description. It has three languages, two ship terminals, two governments, and half a dozen different ethnic groups. Some of Asia’s richest people live next door to some of Asia’s poorest. The only country that comes close to this kind of demography is India. Miles and miles of skyscrapers are stacked together to the horizon. So are the slums. A significant portion of Hong Kong’s population is not even allowed to come on land unless they have to go to the hospital. It’s past is British; it’s future is Communist. Yet in some sense, for Glenda and me Hong Kong feels like an old friend. It is good to be This is our second trip to Hong Kong, and just for sentimental reasons we went on the same excursions today that we took last time. The view from the top of Victoria Peak is magnificent. Our ride in a rickety old sampan was just as charming. The Stanley street market was as crowded and dingy as ever. But this is Hong Kong.

Now we are back in our stateroom starting to pack to go back home to North Carolina. Tomorrow we will leave the ship that has been our home for over a month. We have dear friends we are leaving behind. We just made two new ones as we met the spouse and daughter of one of our friends on the crew. New friends from Oregon and England have graced us with their company. As rich as this experience has been, however, it is true that there is no place like home, and we are looking forward to returning to the place and the friends we love the best.

      Tin Hau Temple

November 12, 2023 in Hong Kong

After escaping the pushy merchants at the jade market, Larry and I wandered into the Tin Hau Temple.

Tin Hau is the Goddess of Seafarers, and the main altar is dedicated to her. According to the sign out front, other shrines throughout the temple are dedicated to “the local earth gods.”

The scent of sandalwood lingered on our clothing after our visit here. As you can see, coils of incense burn overhead throughout the temple.

      Hong Kong Port

      November 12, 2023 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

The cruise port terminal in Hong Kong is built where the runway to the “most dangerous airport in the world” once stood. These days the runway has been replaced by a long building with a rooftop garden. We could easily see the garden from our ship. It seems to be a popular picnic site. Some families even pitched little tents up there for their children to play in.

I include the last picture here to show the path required to enter the cruise terminal. See how labyrinthine it is? For me and Larry, it simply meant walking a bit more, but for passengers with limited mobility, it was quite frustrating.

      Honkong-Melbourne

      January 4 in Hong Kong ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Naja, in Switzerland we say: Huere knapp!!!
      the struggle continues....
