      Day in Dublin

      September 6, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Top o the morning to ya! What a day to discover in Dublin. We saw Trinity college, enjoyed a coffee at the Beanhive (most amazing coffee art), walked through St. Stephen’s Green Park, checked out a museum, did some shopping and walked past some famous landmarks like Temple Bar. Emma and I felt a sense a belonging given our Irish roots and enjoyed exploring the streets of Dublin!

Also for those who are wondering why I am touching the lady’s boob, that is a statue of Molly Malone and it is believed that touching her breast brings good luck!

Book of Kells and the Long Room

      June 27, 2022 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

First thing we did on the first full day here was head to Trinity College and take in the Book of Kells (a 1200 year old copy of the first 4 books of the New testament hand illustrated by monks on cow skin). Super interesting. Upstairs from that is the a room ingeniously named... "The Long Room" due to it's rather impressing length. Apparently they had a lot of books and they needed a place to store them. Then we wandered around Trinity College for a bit before hitting the open road.... or.... in our case... congested sidewalks. More to come later.Read more

      Dublin

      September 5, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Dublin, capital of the Republic of Ireland, is on Ireland’s east coast at the mouth of the River Liffey. Its historic buildings include Dublin Castle, dating to the 13th century, and imposing St Patrick’s Cathedral, founded in 1191. City parks include landscaped St Stephen’s Green and huge Phoenix Park, containing Dublin Zoo. The National Museum of Ireland explores Irish heritage and culture.

The Spire of Dublin, alternatively titled the Monument of Light, is a large, stainless steel, pin-like monument 120 metres in height, located on the site of the former Nelson's Pillar on O'Connell Street, the main thoroughfare of Dublin, Ireland

      Flying across the Atlantic

      June 3, 2022 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Made it to Dublin! Plane was not full so we had an empty seat between us. It was a very modern 787 jet with great seat entertainment screens, plugs and USB ports. Been a while since we have flown internationally but it’s still hard to get sleep! Staying one night in Dublin, heading to Belfast tomorrow. Hop on and hop off bus tour, a visit to Guinness, a quick nap, dinner and chill.Read more

      Erster Tag in Dublin

      April 26, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

      National Museum of Archaeology

      April 26, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Okay, this should be the last big museum I'm doing -- but come on, I couldn't forego an archaeology museum. This one has several iconic items, and is especially renowned for its treasury, including the Brooch of Tara, the Ardagh Chalice, St. Patrick's bell and its reliquary shrine, and the Cross of Cong. Also pictured are one of the famous "big bodies" and an equally famous three-faced statue head of a mystery-deity from old Pagan Europe.Read more

      Stadttour Dublin

      April 27, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

      Friday in Dublin

      July 22, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Made it back to Dublin, checked in to our new fancy hotel. We explored the city and surprised Matt with a Jameson whiskey tour. The tour included learning the history of Jamison, how it’s made, whiskey tasting and entering the maturation room with the casks where flash photography locks you in and sucks the oxygen out of the room in 30seconds. The strongest whiskey we tried was 63.4% (127.8 proof). Capped the night off with the club in the downstairs of our hotel (very convenient!) we learned if you spill its mopped instantly! The greatest sin of the club is to get in the way of the mop.Read more

      Dublin

      October 20, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Arrived in Dublin for the last part of our trip. Cold and rainy afternoon with flooding in some parts of the city. We wandered a bit and then retired to the bar on our lovely hotel - The Marlin. Started Saturday with another big wander with stops at some jewelry stores, a cross over the ha'penny bridge, a cheesemongery (had to taste several - amazing. We were highly entertained by the young fellow who served us. When he asked about our trip and Mary told him we had walked the Camino his response was "fair play to you". Apparently that is Irish for wow, good for you.) and a visit to the Celtic whiskey shop that Rachel O'Reilly said we had to visit. You were right Rachel! Next on to the Temple Bar area where we walked by several pubs with live fiddle music and singing. We settled on Quay's upstairs where we were able to get a table and have a great fish and chips lunch. After more wandering we visited The Gin Palace. In the evening we saw a play at the historic Gaiety Theatre, founded in 1871.Read more

      Last day in Ireland

      October 22, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Mary and I started our last day in Ireland with a visit to the National Gallery. Next we walked through St Stephen's Green - a beautiful park in the middle of Dublin. There we saw a monument remembering the famine, and the summer house where women and men slept and ate during the Easter uprising. Next we moved on to the train station and hopped on the first train leaving for somewhere on the coast. We took some photos from the train (yes Elizabeth, sun and blue skies again in Ireland 😉). We disembarked an hour outside Dublin at Greystones, a lovely little coastal town. After lunch at the Burnaby House Pub we wandered along the beach road and watched some very hearty souls swimming (it was only about 10 degrees) and listened to a piper.Read more
