      Kylemore Abbey

      Kylemore Abbey (irisch: Mainistir na Coille Móire) ist ein Benediktinerkloster, das 1920 auf dem Gelände von Kylemore Castle in Connemara, gegründet wurde. Die Abtei wurde für Benediktinerinnen gegründet, die im Ersten Weltkrieg aus Belgien flohen. Heute setzt Kylemore Abbey unter dem Kylemore Trust seine Mission als Benediktinerkloster fort und hält Kylemore und seine spirituelle Mission, natürliches und gebautes Erbe, im Vertrauen für die irische Nation.

      Für 16 Euro Eintritt kann man die alten Teile des Klosters, die gotische Kirche, das Mausoleum und den großen viktorianischen Garten ansehen und somit viel Zeit und schöne Spaziergänge auf dem Gelände verbringen.      Read more

      Last Day with Pat!

      We plan to see Connemara, Galway and Cliffs of Moher today. Tomorrow will begin the self driving portion of our trip. To say that we have been spoiled is an understatement. Pat has been a wealth of information and if he doesn’t know something, he finds out. He has been flexible and altered our itinerary to add and delete things, knowing us and our preferences. We plan to have lunch together and then he will leave us at the hotel near Shannon airport. Another driver is to pick us up in the morning and take us to the airport for our rental car. Should be another adventure! Eileen driving and Larry at the map! So plans are forever changing. Car trouble this morning, so we headed to Galway to exchange cars, had a stroll down Quay St. and finally made it to Cliffs of Moher in the later afternoon. As always, it’s a breathtaking place. It’s now very touristy with a shopping area and visitor center. All of that is new since we were last there. Also new is a slate, flagstone like wall that prevents people from getting too close to the edge and discourages people from taking their own lives by jumping. Apparently this has become enough of an issue, that they have a Serenity Room available for anyone who might need it. The wall is obviously a good thing but the views are definitely affected. I’ll go back and look at our pics from 15 yrs ago when it was simply a viewing area instead of this major attraction. Late check in and early check out of hotel in Ennis. Will need to spend more time in this cute little town. On to the next adventure of driving ourselves!Read more

      Walled Victorian Garden

      Der sehr gepflegte Garten zur Abbey. Eine Mischung aus formalem Lustgarten, Blumengarten und Gemüse- und Kräutergarten. Schade, dass die viktorianischen Gewächshäuser nicht mehr da sind.
      Dazu gab es aber noch das niedliche Haus des Gartenmeisters zu besichtigen. Das würde uns auch schon reichen...Read more

      Kylemoor Abbey

      We’re packing up from our tiny little rooms in Galway today. It’s been a great location, so central and great pubs and music all around Apart from my bed issues we’ve managed fine in this little space. It will be nice to be able to spread out again today though when we get to Donegal.

      Our stop on the way is Kylemore Abbey. A Benedictine monastery set on 1,000 acres of mountainside in Connemara. A photo of this Abbey keeps coming up on Graham’s feed so he is keen to see it. Driving up to the Abbey you’re met with a stunning view of it over the lake. The castle is beautiful outside and inside, The history is fascinating, the surrounding landscape stunning. We also loved the Victorian garden is amazing and luckily the sun came out for us as we got there The pretty little gothic church is under renovation but what we saw of it was lovely.

      We spent longer at the abbey then we intended and then had a long drive to get to Donegal. Lovely little cottage we have here up on the hill with three bedrooms. Once we settled in we headed into town for some easy cheeseboard supplies for dinner. We’re looking forward to exploring tomorrow.      Read more

      Bustour durch Connemara

      Der erste grössere Stopp der heutigen Bustour durch Connemara ist das Kylemore Abbey und der zugehörige viktorianische Garten. Ich habe den perfekten Tag erwischt, das Wetter ist nicht zu toppen. Auf der Fahrt durchqueren wir am Laufmeter atemberaubende Landschaften. Ich bin begeistert von den kleinen Brücken und Steinmauern in den Feldern und würde am liebsten alle 20m aussteigen um zu fotografieren. 

      Unser Chauffeur/Guide Mike erzählt viel, zum Beispiel dass die frei herumlaufenden Schafe nicht dumm, sondern nervös sind. Ausserdem erwähnt er, dass Iren nur Salz und Butter auf die Kartoffeln (spuds) geben, alles andere gilt als Sakrileg. Sein irischer Akzent verlangt mir viel Konzentration beim Zuhören ab, aber seine witzige Art macht das allemal wett.

      Zurück in Galway entscheide ich mich, den angebrochenen Abend in der Stadt zu verbringen. Tatsächlich streift eine Schweizer Guggemusig durch die Gassen, und die Leute lieben es. Es liegt ein kollektives Gefühl des Anlauf-Holens für das St. Paddy's Wochenende in der Luft.      Read more

      From the Burren to Connemara

      Our journey today took us from Doolin, weaving through the unique limestone landscape of the Burren, and onward to the vibrant city of Galway before reaching the wild and rugged beauty of Connemara National Park.

      Starting the day in the Burren, an area renowned for its karst landscape, we were struck by the stark beauty of the terrain, where rock formations and rare flora create a moonscape unlike any other in Ireland. The drive through this region is always an intriguing experience, with its ancient dolmens and megalithic tombs dotting the landscape, a testament to the area's rich archaeological history.

      Upon reaching Galway, we explored the old town, wandering down Latin Street, which pulses with the vibrant energy of street performers, bustling cafes, and eclectic shops. The city's blend of historic charm and contemporary culture made for a delightful stop, giving us a taste of urban Irish life amid our nature-focused travels.

      From Galway, we continued to Connemara National Park, a place of wild beauty where the landscapes are painted with broad strokes of mountains, bogs, and woodlands. Here, we enjoyed a hike through the park, embracing the serene views and the tranquility that only such remote places can offer. Awen and Nessy thrived on the open trails, their spirits high with the freedom to roam.

      Finally, we arrived near Newport in County Mayo, where we'll be based for the next few days. The area around Newport is known for its scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect place to rest and recharge after a day filled with diverse experiences.      Read more

      Upper Diamond Walk

      In Connemara gibt es genau einen National Park - um den Diamond Hill herum. Die Iren nennen ihn Ghuaires-Gipfel (Binn Ghuaire) nach irgend so einem König von vor 1.000 Jahren. Und da wollen wir nun hinauf. Der steinige Weg windet sich durch eine whiskey-farbene gemalte Landschaft. Maximal Kräuter und kleine Sträucher sind bis zu den Bergketten vor uns zu sehen. Der Seewind bläst kräftig einem ins Gesicht, spätestens ab dem Fuße des knapp 450m hohen Berges funktioniert Unterhaltung nur noch gut über Anbrüllen. "Wandern in Irland macht man nur wegen des Ausblickes wegen, alles andere kann man vergessen. Dafür muss man die großartigste Orte meist nie mit jemanden teilen." Auf den Diamond Hill trifft das auf jedenfall zu. Die Aussicht in die Bucht von Letterfrack ist mächtig beeindruckend.Read more

      Balade dans le Connemara où tout est vert d'une beauté incroyable et là où les lacs ont des reflets fantastiques ..
