Day 15. Volterra to Bergamo, Italy.

    August 19 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Goodbye to Volterra. We loved the township, the food, the people and our accommodation.
A 5 hour drive to Bergamo cost 40 Euros in Road Tolls and we filled up with petrol for 84 Euros.
We needed to be close to the airport for our flight tomorrow and to return our Fiat Panda car.
Great accommodation and friendly host Emilio Salgari at IndispArte Suites.
We walked 30 minutes into the old city and saw the main sights, had dinner and back to our room. Fabulous food choices and devine patisseries and pizzas.

    Day 15a. Bergamo.

    August 19 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is a major church in the upper town of Bergamo, Northern Italy.
The church was founded in 1137 on the site of another church from the 8th century dedicated to St Mary, which had been in turn erected over a Roman temple of the Clemence. The high altar was consecrated in 1185 and in 1187 the presbytery and the transept wings were completed. Due to financial troubles, the works dragged for the whole 13th–14th centuries. The bell tower was built from 1436 (being completed around the end of the century), while in 1481–1491 a new sacristy added after the old one had been destroyed by Bartolomeo Colleoni to erect his personal mausoleum, the Colleoni Chapel.Read more

Day 204: Bergamo via Crespi d'Adda

    September 6, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Time to move on from Milan, and start our trip across northern Italy! First up was a walk to Milan central station, about 10 minutes or so, to pick up our next rental car. I was a bit concerned about it since this company doesn't have great reviews (it's not a major company), but aside from a long wait (90 minutes between arriving at the station and driving away) it was OK. New car is a Toyota Yaris hybrid - very strange to turn the engine on and have nothing happen, but you get used to it!

Drove north-east out of Milan, very carefully since Italian drivers are pretty crazy, heading for our first stop at Crespi d'Adda. This is a planned worker's community around a textile mill, similar to other UNESCO-listed factory towns we'd seen in England and elsewhere. It had a distinctly Italian flavour though, with larger separated houses rather than terraces, designed to include three generations of family. It also included a large church, priest house, doctor's house, a laundry area (really just concrete washbasins and running water) and even an indoor swimming pool!

Most of these facilities were long gone though, and the whole area was super quiet. Even the guy at the tourist info desk looked surprised when I walked in, though he didn't bother engaging any further beyond "buongiorno". Interesting little stop, though it feels like the least-visited WHS we've been to!

Back to the car where we continued heading north-east to the city of Bergamo. This is a very recent inclusion on the world heritage list, only getting added in July 2017. It's part of a 7-entry listing about the Defences of the Venetian Republic - this was their territory during the Renaissance, and Bergamo had a large old city perched on a hill surrounded by heavy fortifications.

We parked up and had a good wander around, since there was quite a lot to see. Very long walls and high over the more modern city below. Interesting stuff in the old city too like a cathedral and crypts of the Renaissance-era ruling family. And there was some sort of festival happening in town too, though it wasn't starting until tomorrow and they were finishing the setup. Had an ice-cream and enjoyed the sunshine, particularly since there were very few tourists around - mainly just us and the locals. Nice.

Back to the car where we drove to our apartment about 10 minutes out of town. It's in a normal apartment building, and it's just a regular 3-bedroom apartment with each of the rooms rented separately. It means we're sharing a bathroom but that's not a big deal, particularly for just one night. The other couple didn't come home until quite late anyway, and we didn't notice anyone in the third room.

Had pizza by the slice from a pizzeria on the ground floor of the building, enormous slices and very tasty. I know pizza is a southern Italian dish, but it's just ubiquitous across the country these days and almost always good quality. Hard to resist.

    Gavirate to Bergamo via Como

    July 20, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

After an early morning swim in Lago di Varese, at Gavirate, we headed into Como for a quick look. Nice city and the lakefront was very like Lago Maggiore. After a forgettable lunch opposite the cathedral, the heat was building, so we decided it was time to push on to Bergamo.
On the way, our Italian sim kicked in and we had Internet again, which was very fortunate because we were able to identify a Bunnings-like hardware store on the outskirts of Bergamo, where Eric was able to buy a much needed gas fitting for the comping car.
With his usual professionalism, Eric drove us all the way in to our hostel in the centre of Bergamo and sad farewells were said. Thanks for your wonderful hospitality guys and good luck. Travel safely to Sweden and Australia.
After a bit of a clean up, we headed around the block for a very pleasant meal of pasta, scallopini al limone and the chefs dessert selection (cafe gourmand, in french).

    Bergamo

    July 28, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

👍Read more

    1. Tag Bergamo

    September 15 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    Bergamo 1

    July 21, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

    Friday
Rest day today. Caught up on the housework, visited Tourist Info and explored our local area, just at the edge of the Puoto Nuovo, the UNESCO world heritage area.
Note to self - fried herbs & prusciutto go really well with pasta.
    Saturday
Headed up to the old town. We walked along the amazing Venetian city walls - hugely thick complex of defences. Looks like it will stand forever. We climbed up through Castle Vigilio, past the 11th century Bishops chapel and in through the duomo. Not a space had been left unembellished.
Lunch in Piazza Vecchia was followed by a wander through the lovely old streets, full of enticing food and clothing shops.
Another funicular - the San Vigilio- took us upwards again to the Bergamo hills. Beautiful views with lovely villas perched on the hillside overlooking Bergamo.
Nice spot for a wine and some cheese and olives!
    Sunday
Pat rode. Bit hot for me - I just pottered.
