      Capri

      19 oktober 2023, Italien ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

      Capri

      25 juli 2023, Italien ⋅ ⛅ 90 °F

Took a ferry to Capri, unfortunately choppy seas closed the Blue Grotto so we just took the funicular up and wandered. On the ferry back we got to experience the rough waters. Original return to Positano got pushed to Amalfi, and then after waiting there a half hour while everyone got sick got pushed to Salerno. And of course then everyone on the ferry had to try to catch the limited busses back.Läs mer

      Sorrento Day One

      20 april 2023, Italien ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

It did not take long for our adventure to come to a grinding stop.
Sorrento is a lovely tourist destination - but after 8 hour days walking Rome, Venice, Milan, Zürich, Paris and Singapore - this was a distinctive change of pace.
And the kids were BORED! 🤣

      Capri, Italy

      31 augusti 2023, Italien ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

      What we did:
        - Nursing our limencello hangovers we caught our ferry from Sorrento to Capri.  25/30mph winds had the ferry rocking as we wedged ourselves into seats in the bowels of the boat, amongst hoards of eastern european cruise ship groups. Thankfully it was only 20 minutes, but swimming might have been preferable
      - Morale picked up as we hit land and evaded the crowds in the winding streets of Capri to a quieter coffee shop. Cappacinos and croissants are good for the soul
      - We took a bus along the cliff roads to Anacapri and then took a single person chair lift up to the top of the mountain to enjoy expansive views across Capri and the ocean. The combo of cliff roads, fearless bus drivers, maniac bikers and heights on the chairlift really put Helen’s fears and emotions through the ringer - big champ though!
      - After the chairlift we grabbed a quick bite to eat and walked on a tour/hike around the entirety of the island and enjoyed gorgeous views! Good call on finding the hike, Brian! Stopped at an amazing hotel balcony for drinks/apps overlooking the sea and just chilled out for a few hours. Away from the chaos of tourists by the ports, we finally understood the hype around Capri!
      - After walking around a bit longer we caught the ferry back to Sorrento, regrouped and enjoyed delicious pizzas at a local hotspot! Exhausted from the prior few days we called it a night after dinner.  Another great day!

      What we ate:
      - Eastern European tourist armpits
      - Coffee and cappuccinos at Caffe Manari
      - Good prosciutto and turkey sammies at a street takeaway place for lunch
      - Aperol Spritz and bruschetta/calamari apps at the five star hotel La Scalinatella
      - Delicious pizzas at the local Pizzeria da Franco, with the group trying four of the staples (salami, prosciutto, caprese and mozzarella/arugula). Voted best pizza place in Sorrento. Had to get pizza near the birthplace!

      Fun facts:
      - The group has decided Italy is a 2nd/3rd world country (sorry not sorry). Naples makes Mexico look glamorous and lots of outdated infrastructure/processes that leads to chaos everywhere. But man does the food and views make up for it!
      - Capri is only 4 square miles big, which puts Dupage county 90x bigger.  Despite that it sees 3 million tourists a year, with up to 20,000 arrivals a day in the summer. This island rakes cash $$$$
      - Trent wants (needs?) a yacht someday. Every badass accountant has a yacht- it’ll happen
       - Apparently celebs just park on their yachts all day and only come on land for dinner once the ferries shepard us peasant tourists back off the island.
      - Pizza was founded by poor people in Naples in the 1700/1800s!  Snippet from History.com - “These Neapolitans required inexpensive food that could be consumed quickly. Pizza—flatbreads with various toppings, eaten for any meal and sold by street vendors or informal restaurants—met this need. Judgmental Italian authors often called their eating habits ‘disgusting, Helstosky notes. These early pizzas consumed by Naples’ poor featured the tasty garnishes beloved today, such as tomatoes, cheese, oil, anchovies and garlic.”
      - Arugula is called Rocket Lettuce in Italy. Brian has confirmed that he does not like “leaves on his pizza”

      Isle of Capri

      10 maj, Italien ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After a touch base in Sorrento we have visited the Isle of Capri for the day. Lots of exploring with lots of highlights! We travelled a very packed bus to the top of Capri, a bit of a wait yet apparently it's quiet compared to the summer months. After the bus we used the chair lifts to reach the very top. The views are stunning! However, it's not a trip to Capri without a boat tour around the island. Another big day !Läs mer

      Napoli

      7 oktober 2023, Italien ⋅ 🌙 73 °F

Today, we leave beautiful Anacapri/Capri island for Naples. I enjoyed the accommodations that we had. They provided us with some luxuries in our room, a comfy bed, and a wonderful breakfast on both days. They are also very helpful with direction. The taxi ride down the mountain was less stressful than the ride up. We still come in close contact with vehicles and the idiots that walk or run down the same side as the vehicles coming down, not knowing what would hit them. We are going back via a hydrofoil boat across the steel blue sea. The sea is calm for a ride, and it's open for a cool wind on a hot day. We arrive at Port and need to find a taxi to our accommodations. The driver narrates the drive with interesting facts about the area and drops us off two blocks from our accommodations. He proceeds to rip us off requesting 10 euros each for a two-mile, five-minute drive. The streets are busy with people all over, mixed with vehicles. We finally find our place in a shady area but the apartment is ok. Out we ventured for a drink and we had our first margarita pizza. We just stumbled on the underground city of Leonardo Maggioria and toured it on our own. It is a major attraction in Naples. We walk a short distance for gelato and the servers are rude. We all walk in search of something to do and we all have an uncomfortable feeling about Naples. We all just can't wait to get out of town. Finding wine is like finding a needle in a haystack. We find one bottle of DOCG Chianti for 11 euros and decide we will get one but beer is going to be the drink of the night. We received a recommendation from our waiter last evening, who is from here, for the best pizza in town. L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele was the place, but on arrival, they were at number 29 and we were at 90. We went across the street and had a great pizza. The pizza is the size of a medium at home but the crust is thin with puffy edges and the toppings are simple and light. Since the walk to the pizzeria was like a scene out of The Italian Job, I wanted to videotape to show the kids how wild it was and how close they came to collecting an insurance claim. In my first scene, I forgot to push the record button. It's crazy. The kids ride their motorbikes back and forth down the street. It is so dangerous. We all agree Naples is not a tourist place where we are staying. I do feel at times not safe, it's dirty with litter and graffiti and we can't wait to get out of dodge cause this place is bat shit crazy!Läs mer

Day 25 - Capri - Best Day Ever

      4 oktober 2017, Italien ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Today was absolutely the best day ever. And Capri is absolutely the best place ever. It is basically a giant island made up of giant cliffs and giant rock formations that stick hundreds of feet out of the Mediterranean Sea, with views of the Bay of Naples, the Sorrento Coast, the Amalfi Coast, Mount Vesuvius, and, at some points, just water as far as the eye can see. About three quarters of the island is beautiful empty cliffs while the other quarter manages to squeeze a couple of small towns - Capri, down on the water, and Anacapri - up in the cliffs.

We started our day by walking the short but steep walk from our beautiful bed and breakfast down to Anacapri town (with a friendly kitten) to catch the chair lift to the top of Mount Solaro. I am terrified of heights and was terrified to get on this single-person chair lift to the highest point on the island. I didn't do well. I gripped the railing and either stared at the cliff on my left or closed my eyes the entire way...not once looking at the beautiful view of the water and town and cliffs on my right. Once we made it to the top, we got off and walked around and I got to actually take in the beautiful scenery. It was amazing. I am so glad we took this trip in September/October because there were not that many people on the mountain. I imagine in the summer there is barely room to stand, let alone grab a seat overlooking the cliffs. We had a cold beer and relaxed and I built up the strength to take the lift down instead of hiking all the way down. The ride down was beautiful.

Once we got back down, we had a quick pizza, and took the crazy bus down to the Capri marina for a private boar tour around the island. I'm not sure what to say about this tour except that it was the absolute highlight of the trip. I can't think of much else I've ever done to top it. We spent three hours in a private boat, riding around the entire island of Capri, sipping wine and beer, swimming, and taking in the views. We went into several caves, swam in caves and grottos, and saw the island in the best way imaginable. The white grotto was amazing, with it's natural Madonna statue. The green grotto was beautiful, and Tim was able to scale the rocks inside and dive in. But nothing could ever compare to the blue grotto.

I had read so much about the blue grotto this past year. I knew it would be amazing. But everything I read said that you paid a small boat a lot of money to take you inside the grotto with a dozen other boats, turn you around, and you're out in 2 minutes. I had also read that, before and after hours (9-5), the boats and the cops leave and sometimes the locals just swim in. I had wanted to do this and had told everyone I would do this for the past year. Well that's how our boat trip ended. He dropped us off near the entrance and told us to have fun. We swam over to the tiny opening (I have no idea how any boat can fit in), we pulled ourselves in on the rope, and we saw the most beautiful thing imaginable. The entire cave is lit up with a glowing bright blue water that I can't even describe. We spent a long time in the cave, swimming and climbing and diving off rocks. It was unreal.

Then we rode back to the marina, dried off, changed, had a good pasta dinner, and now we're ready for bed. What a day!
