Back to Naples for a couple of hours

      July 21, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Our tour dropped us back at the port where we brought all our purchases back to our stateroom and then hightailed it back to Naples to walk around before leaving the port.

We passed by a few older looking buildings and made our way to Galleria Umberto which housed various stores like, Zara and cafés. Before we even realized this was a shopping area, we admired the mosaics in the floor and the high cameo arches. The domed central roof made of glass and iron bars brought in so much natural light. What an amazing building! After some souvenir shopping, we finally got that pizza Napoli which was delicious!!! Inside the galleria, we came across a McDonalds which had a McCafe that rivaled any Starbucks back in SC. Of course, on our walk back to the port, we passed by many other pizza places that all looked amazing.

As we said goodbye to Naples, we were able to catch the sunset. Ciao!

      Italy/Croatia 2024

      February 29 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Early morning start for 0700 flight to Naples. (We had 2 days in UK to get over jetlag and buy shoes!)
Easy flight and arrived to sunshine. Met our driver who took us to our first stop, Minori, on the Amalfi coast. Amazing views as we climbed up and up, round incredible hairpin bends. Mt Vesuvius looked huge; terraced row upon row of lemon and orange trees. All covered in nets but fruit very visible.
After 130 steps we arrived at our home for the next few days. Beautiful view from our terrace.
Slipped right into the culture - aperitivo time followed by freshly made pizza. I can recommend the local wine!

      Naples: Bye Bye Naples

      October 27, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Of the ships sharing Naples with us, Carnival Pride was first to leave … followed by RCL’s Symphony of the Seas. Then Oosterdam let its bow lines go. Since we had maneuvered to back into our berth this morning, it was full ahead for us … a full moon lighting our way … Vesuvius, a dark silhouette with its skirts a-twinkle with town lights, our companion.

But before we wave a final farewell to Naples, I have one more short story to tell.

By the time we left San Martino it was 1:30p. We were ready for a change of pace that would include a late lunch with Alev, a high school classmate of Mui’s, who lives in Naples with her Italian husband.

The plan was to meet up for lunch at Gorizia, a pizzeria Alev had recommended in Vomero … in operation since 1916. We headed down from the museum on foot and found the place easily enough. Our get together was delightful. The chatter and laughter were nonstop … pauses just long enough to eat a bite of food … or take a sip of wine to wash down those bites.

After lunch, Alev took us on a drive around Naples, stopping at a few piazzas and view points. By this time, Vesuvius was uncloaked and gave us a couple of good photo ops. As the afternoon shadows gave way to evening, Alev took us to Galleria Umberto I, a beautiful mall with a glass roof and mosaic floors. Here we bid her farewell, thanking her for showing us Naples from a local’s perspective.

Treating ourselves to some artisanal gelato from a place near Piazza Plebicito, we found an elevator to get us down to the waterfront, and from there made our way back to the port where Oosterdam awaited us.

Thus ended the first of a string of 10 ports of call that will fill the days ahead of us.

      Pompeii, Italy

      April 9 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

It was surreal to see Mt. Vesuvius looming large before us as we drove to Pompeii this morning to visit the ruins. Such an iconic landmark due to the cataclysmic eruption that consumed the city and the people of Pompeii in AD 79.

When we entered the ruins, we were overwhelmed by the shear size of the city (over 15,000 people) and what happened here. To see
it uncovered is quite remarkable as you walk about and imagine what life was like back then and how tragic that day must have been for the community.

The details of the architecture, carvings, and fresco paintings that were preserved due to being covered are amazing and can be seen in the structures we saw including the Basilica, Temple of Apollo, Roman Forum, Bars, Theaters, Bath Houses, Shops, Homes, Government Buildings. It's definitely a walk through history.

Had lunch at the ruins and loved that the restaurant had a variety of tomotoe vines and lemon trees planted around it to use for its dishes or to sell. Gave you a feeling that life goes on.

After a full day, we headed to Naples and arrived into a bustling city. Even though we were in the older section of town, the hotel turned out to be quite nice, so we buckled up for what tomorrow would bring.

      Napoli

      May 23, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After coffee ☕ in the early morning sun in the cockpit, we motored to Naples where we anchored the boat and Bob rowed us behind the breakwater. We discovered there was a beach and 2 fishing boats selling their catch. We have to say the fish were pretty small and not as varied compared to the fish markets on the Atlantic coast. We tied up our dinghy hoping it and our sailboat would still be there later! 😬 We wandered along the seawall and through the old part of Naples where they were setting up for some music concert. The streets were festooned with streamers celebrating a sports win along with drying laundry hung out of the windows. We stopped for pizza lunch along the sea front but we were not pleased when told you have to go online to view the menu and later found a €5 sitting charge on the bill!😡 We wandered back and discovered both boats were still there! 😀 Bob started rowing us out with comments from a fellow at the dock that I should be rowing for the Captain. HA! Bob got his workout 🚣‍♂️as he was battling the wind then we sailed back to Porto Miseno. Bob rowed again against the current, and we walked to the grocery store. Discovered a lake! Perfect for dinghy sailing. I rowed us back, made dinner and listened to the music and watched fireworks again.Read more

      Escape to Naples

      September 18, 2022 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Detour to Naples! So I decided to escape to Naples so I could go farther to the Amalfi coast. Naples was like Rome but by the ocean which made it significantly better for me (all my personal opinion). It was still another big city but I just walked along the waterfront and enjoyed the chill day. I called and caught up with some friends back at home which was really lovely. Shout out to my Halifax crew! I will say Italian people are truly lovely. I was sitting on the sidewalk on the phone and I think a family thought I was homeless and offered me a piece of cake. I'll give the compliment rather than taking offense 😂 (I was wearing a Lulu skirt, t-shirt, hair in braids, and wireless earbuds so I really didn't feel like I was dressed for the assumption 😂)Read more

      Neapel

      May 26, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C
