      It was very difficult to book online for the visit to Scrovegni Chapel to see Giotto's frescoes. Firstly it was not available to book till late October and when it was opened, the site kept switching from the English option back to Italian.
      We finally got the tickets and visited the Scrovegni Chapel today and it was worth all the hassle.
      We began the visit in a room to the side of the chapel and were made to wait whilst they equalised the pressure and removed pollutants from the air. Whilst waiting, there was a documentary in Italian with English subtitles about the history and the explanation of interpretations of Giotto's frescoes. We booked 2 time slots at 9am and 9.15am which meant that we could stay till 930am in the chapel. I highly recommend the booking of back to back time slots. The frescos were magnificent. I can't do justice in the pictures nor describing the frescoes in words as to how wonderful it was.

      Then we visited Church of Eremitani and the Basilica of St Anthony. The Basilica of St Anthony left me speechless. St Anthony's remains were placed in gold gilded monstrances and at his sarcophagus, there was much devotion and veneration.The architecture, the art and scupltures were stunning and overwhelming.

      Following from yesterday's complaint, we came back to the apartment to find more toilet paper, an additional roll of paper towel, dish washing tablets and extra laundry detergent. I think it's to appease us so that we won't leave a scathing review. Unfortunately there wasn't any extra coffee nor handwashing liquid soap.

      Padua-Back in Italy

      After leaving Bohinj we had the most amazing and beautiful drive through the Alps and villages on our way back into Italy. Apart from the wonderful scenery Al did an amazing drive up and down narrow mountain roads with hair pin turns all the way for a few hours, but what a view! We overnighted in Padua before driving on to drop the car in Milan and then to catch the train to Venice. Padua is certainly a city of many, many massive churches.Okumaya devam et

      The train ride from Trieste to Padova was quick, smooth and the scenery was spectacular with snow capped Dolomites and little villages dotting the way.
      After the generous host in Trieste Airbnb who has breakfast provision and ample amenities, even helped us print our Scrovegni Chapel tickets and deliver to us, this accommodation was a disappointment on first impressions.
      We are staying here for 5 nights, yet they provided 1 dishwasher tablet, an empty handwash bottle, 1 roll of toilet paper and enough coffee for 1 morning. The reply I got from the host was "I'm sorry but we are not an hotel, so we provide only the Welcome Kit that you have found in the apartment. The guests have to buy everything else they need by themself". Ruby wrote a reply to that and they said they would try to get their cleaning company to drop off some more amenities. The apartment itself is beautifully appointed and new, with Smeg kitchen appliances.

      We did a little walk in the centre and found yummy Pinsa, a sandwich made from pizza dough to uplift our spirits.
      After lunch we visited the Church of Santa Maria Del Carmine, where I lit a candle in memory of Mum. On our way back to the apartment we spotted another church, The Basilica of Santa Lucia. Next to the church, Ruby spied a 'Free entry' sign and was welcomed by a warm and enthusiastic lady who only spoke Italian to us. She handed us a printed English guide and walked us through to introduce us to the Oratory of San Roch, telling us where to start and in which direction to go.

      Before we left she stopped us and told us the story of a wooden statue found in a river that has Mary pinching the nose of Jesus. We think her story was that Mary was protecting Jesus because of all the pollution happening in the world. With my little understanding of Italian, this translation should suffice.
      Then back to the accommodation to cook dinner.

      Padua Apartment

      Nach einer zwar langen aber extrem sonnigen und schönen Fahrt durch die Alpen gut im Apartement angekommen. Ruhiger, eher schicker Stadtteil.
      Parken direkt am Haus mit Tor. Apartment ist gut ausgestattet und geschmackvoll eingerichtet.
      Kleiner Ausflug zum Supermarkt. Zum Abendessen frische Nudeln😋 Rotwein trinken auf dem Balkon.
      Nachtrag: Das Apartment hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Haben sogar die "halbe" Waschmaschine genutzt.
      In wenigen Gehminuten gute Einkaufsmöglichkeiten. In gut 15 min zu Fuß zum Bahnhof.
      Der kl. Supermarkt hat es uns angetan. Haben uns wunderbar versorgt.      Okumaya devam et

      Bei Kaffee und Kerzenschein
      haben wir entschieden nach Venedig zu fahren, da ist das Wetter besser als hier🌧☔️.
      Erster Halt .....na klar italienische Ikea 😍 in Padua . Die Stadt is eine der ältesten Italiens, aber die schauen wir uns erst morgen an 🙆‍♀️🙆‍♂️ heute wird gechillt 😊🥰Okumaya devam et

      Und so kommen wir erst um 17:30Uhr in Padua an.

      Stellplatz auf einem Busparkplatz, sehr Zentrumsnah.

      Direkt nebenan:

      „Die römisch-katholische Basilika Santa Giustina liegt im historischen Stadtzentrum Paduas am Prato della Valle in der Nähe der Basilika des Heiligen Antonius. Sie ist die Abteikirche eines bedeutenden Benediktinerklosters und hat den Rang einer Basilica minor. Sie gehört zu den größten Kirchen der Welt, ist die größte Renaissancekirche des Veneto und ist als Nationaldenkmal geschützt.“

      Die Kirche ist noch offen, da hier eine Hochzeitsmesse stattfindet.

      Wirklich groß, der Innenraum und es gibt noch eine Besonderheit:
      Hier ist das Grab des Evangelist Lukas.

      Es ist heute Sonntag und somit nicht einfach ein offenes Restaurant zu finden. Wir haben Glück und genau gegenüber der Basilika ist sogar ein Vegans Restaurant.

      Von Campingplatz aus machen wir einen Tagesausflug nach Padua (ebenfalls eine Empfehlung des Italien-Fans Kurt A.). Eine sehr schöne Stadt mit einem der grössten Plätze Europas, vollgestellt mit Marktständen. Die Kirche dort mit je sechs Nebenkapellen links und rechts soll ebenfalls eine der grössten ihrer Art sein (wird zumindest in Padua so behauptet).Okumaya devam et

      Padua Altstadt

      Nach einem italienischen Frühstück an der Basilika geht es weiter in die Innenstadt.

      Padua gefällt uns gut, mit vielen Laubengassen und vielen Palazzo.

      Heute scheint eine Abschlussfeier von Studenten zu sein. Viele laufen schick und die Studentinnen mit Blumenschmuck im Haar herum.

      Der Dom hat einige moderne Elemente die uns gut gefallen, ansonsten ist er eher schlicht im Gegensatz zu den Basilica‘s.

      Die Markthalle ist sehr schön, leider ist heute Montag und der große Saal darüber hat zu.

      Auch der botanische Garten ist heute geschlossen. Er ist einer der ältesten der Welt. Schade.

      So müssen wir wohl noch mal wieder kommen.      Okumaya devam et

      ... ᴡᴇɪᴛᴇʀ ɢᴇʜᴛ ´s Rɪᴄʜᴛᴜɴɢ Nᴏʀᴅᴇɴ 🚙💨

      Nachdem wir uns gestern vom Mittelmeer verabschiedet haben, ziehen wir heute mit Sack und Pack weiter. Es geht wieder gen Norden – zurück in die Alpen⛰️🏔… mit einem Zwischenstopp in Padua (Venedig liegt ca. 30 km entfernt)… bei Planung unserer Reise spekulierten wir darauf, noch Zeit für einen Tagestripp nach Venedig zu haben. Vor uns liegen ca. 400 km. Wir fahren ganz bewusst viel Bundesstraße und verzichten möglichst auf Autobahnen, denn wir sind staugeschädigt 😖

      Da es quasi auf dem Weg liegt, machen wir noch einen kurzen Zwischenstopp in Florenz. Die Stadt ist brechend voll mit Menschen und kochend heiß 🔥 mit 37°C im Schatten. Das teure Gelato schmilzt mir in der Hand und wir freuen uns auf die Klimaanlage im Audi 🚙❄️ 😁🤙

      …unsere Unterkunft in Padua erreichen wir - tatsächlich staufrei - am späten Nachmittag 😃 Wir sind überrascht, für den günstigen Preis, eine große, bestens ausgestattete vollklimatisierte Wohnung mit Waschmaschine vorzufinden. Mein 1. Gedanke: „endlich wieder vernünftig schlafen!!!“. Wir entschließen uns dafür, uns gegen einen Erkundungs-Walk zu entscheiden und genießen bei kühlem Bier die kühle Butze 😁🍻 und waschen unsere Klamotten endlich mal nicht mit der Hand!! 🤭

      The Cappella degli Scrovegni, Padua

      In my research of things to experience and see in Italy I came across the Scrovegni Chapel in Padova, Padua. It looked amazing and so close to Venice that it was worth a trip to see it.

      The Cappella degli Scrovegni, the Scrovegni Chapel (also known as the Arena Chapel), is a small church, adjacent to the Augustinian monastery, the Monastero degli Eremitani in Padua. The chapel and monastery are now part of the complex of the Museo Civico of Padua. The chapel contains a fresco cycle by Giotto, completed about 1305 and considered to be an important masterpiece of Western art.

      The chapel was built in 1305 by wealthy Italian banker Enrico Scrovegni. The young Scrovegni’s father had been a notorious userer, or purveyor of bad loans, charging so much interest as to crush those that owed him money. At the time this practice was considered so vile as to end someone’s soul in hell. Scrovegni’s father was so well-known for his illegal interest that he is even name-checked in Dante’s Divine Comedy as one of the souls in the Seventh Circle of Hell.

      The Scrovegni Chapel was built as a measure to atone for his father’s sins, and while the building itself is architecturally unremarkable, Scrovegni was able to retain the services of one of the most renowned artists of the time to decorate the interior. And the result is truly breathtaking. The largest element is extensive cycles showing the Life of Christ and the Life of the Virgin. The wall at the rear of the church, through which the chapel is entered, has a large Last Judgement. There are also panels in grisaille (monochrome) showing the Vices and Virtues.

      Like the Last Supper in Milan, the Scrovegni Chapel can only be visited under strict guidelines in order to protect this amazing work of art. We were unaware that we needed to prebook and were lucky enough to show up when there was a place available.

      The vivid colours, the stories told in the frescos, the beauty and depth of the “heavenly” combined with the “hellish” pieces, the contrasts, even the feeling whilst standing in the Chapel, all of it really made an impact on me. It was definitely worth the trip and is a place I will always remember.      Okumaya devam et
