      Mantua to Zelo

      The Ave Maria set sail at 0700 and negotiated 2 locks before breakfast at 0800. We moored and unloaded the bikes then started riding the 47 km towards Zelo.
      Morning tea was at the village, Ostiglia and then we stopped at the village, Ballotiara for lunch and 2 x tours.
      Ballotiara is a village in the middle of nowhere, but it is famous for 2 things. Firstly, there is the Museo Storico della Giostra (a museum of fair / circus rides. This community started building these rides and now employs 2,000 people. They supply rides all over the world.
      The second tour was at a massive cheese factory called Caseificio Sociale Ballotiara. This factory makes only Grand Padano cheese. We enjoyed a sampling of the cheese which is used by Italians for their pasta dishes. We now know the secret to delicious pasta and it's not matured cheese!
      The ride today, while not very long, was hot and on some gravel tracks, but still fun!
      We arrived at the Barge and had a magnificent meal - BBQ meats and salads and vegetables followed by cheesecake. The day finished with a hot drink on the top deck in the cool breeze. Another wonderful day where, once again, relationships onboard are developing and people are really starting to get to know each other.      Read more

      Mantua / Mantova

      After a very comfortable night onboard Ave Maria, we enjoyed an excellent breakfast and then prepared for our very sedate 35 km ride around this area. Today was really a 'shake down' ride so our Guides, Francesco & Fabrizio, could see how well people coped with pack riding and electric bikes (for some, their first time on an EBike).
      We stopped at a beautiful cafe / patisserie at a village called Marmirolo.
      On this trip we pack lunch after our breakfast. We stopped near a lake and enjoyed our roll and a cold drink (!!) before returning to the Barge.
      Later in the afternoon we went to the Old Town and were given a guided tour by a very knowledgeable woman. She really brought Mantua alive for us and helped us realize the historical importance of the UNESCO World Heritage City.
      Dinner wasn't provided onboard so we went to a riverside festival - we think a multicultural celebration. There were some exciting Hispanic musicians playing. The last couple of hours were spent on the top deck of the barge chatting. The weather is starting to heat up, so riding may not be as idyllic as it has been.       Mantova

      Wir haben noch eine Woche Urlaub und dümpeln jetzt langsam nach Hause. Heute haben Bayern und Baden-Württemberg Ferien bekommen. Je nachdem wie voll es wird … bleiben wir noch ein wenig in Italien und fahren über Südtirol nach Hause.
      Nach der Käserei geht es über die Landstraße nach Mantova.
      Eine Stadt begrüßt uns an vier Seen welche vom Fluss gespeist werden. Die Stadt wurde 1328 gegründet und macht uns mal wieder sprachlos.
      Der Palazzo Ducale ist Italiens größter Palast und hat 500 Zimmer. Es gibt die noch alle. Der Dom und die Kirche lassen einen sprachlos werden. Wir lassen uns treiben und beschließen das wir hier noch einmal her kommen.
      Auf dem Rückweg „läuft“ uns eine Schildkröte über den Weg.

      Mantova

      Trüb und grau begann der Tag, das gegenüberliegende Ufer war nicht zu sehen. Ich starte um 9:00 bei 12 ° und habe schon Gegenwind. Es ist der berühmte Südwind vom Gardasee. Die ersten 20 km sind dennoch zum geniessen, kaum Verkehr, das Ufer stets im Blick, glasklar das Wasser. Schöne Villen, kleine altertümliche Ortschaften mit ihren kleinen Fischerhäfen, Zypressen, Olivenbäume, Palmen. Die nächsten 20 km nach Pescheira sind zum Abhaken: Baustellen, Verkehrschaos, Schluss mit Idylle.
      Pescheira hat eine eindrucksvolle Festung mit Wassergraben, zahllose Touristen latschen hier herum.
      Der Radweg nach Mantova, der EuroVelo 7, ist gut ausgeschildert und folgt dem Fiume Mincio, dieser erinnert jedoch eher an einen Kanal. Ich bin froh den Strassenverkehr und Lärm los zu sein und radel durch die Stille noch 40 km zu meinem Campingplatz.      Read more

      Palazzo Ducale in Mantua

      In the morning, we went to the enormous Palazzo Ducale. The sheer size of endless rooms, hallways, lodgias and salons, coupled with the abundance and quality of decorations was quite overwhelming. The creativity and variety of the frescoes was stunning - my favorites were the labyrinth room with the Labyrinth frescoes on the ceiling, and the Hall of Mirrors. But the most impressive were several rooms decorated with show stopping tapestries. They are from the 16th century, depicting incredibly detailed scenes and still retaining their vibrant colors. One of the most impressive things we’ve ever seen. Who would have known that in a town that we’ve never ever heard about, would be such incredible treasures?? Before leaving Mantua, we went for lunch into a local tavern recommended by both our VoiceMap guide and lonely planet, and it didn’t disappoint! Delicious homemade food in a buzzing local establishment! We then drove 3 hours to Lyublyana to spend the night, before driving further towards Zagreb, to a remote location of our intensive tango learning weekend.Read more

      Mantua

      Unser Übernachtungsplatz war nahe Mantua auf einem großen Parkplatz.
      Gleich nach dem Frühstück fahren wir noch ein Stück weiter und bleiben gegenüber der Brücke auf einem großen Parkplatz stehen. Unser Fußweg führt uns über die Brücke in die Altstadt, direkt vor uns liegt der Palazzo Ducale.
      Er wird fleißig renoviert, Mantua ist ja jetzt Weltkulturerbe. Wir gehen noch lange in Zentrum spazieren, viele historische Gebäude sind liebevoll hergerichtet und nett zum Besichtigen.
      Wir gehen in die fantastische Kirche diese ist bereits vollständig renoviert. Der Basilika ist ein Reliquien, Blut von Jesus Christus.
      Wir können mit zwei anderen Personen in die Krypta gehen, und erleben dort ein besonderes energiereiches Erlebnis. Normalerweise kommt man da nicht hinunter, wir sind uns dieser Ehre bewusst Mittags kaufe ich mir ein Stück Pizza, Johann hat heute üble Laune und nach vielen Kilometern kehren wir müde zum Auto zurück. Dann fahren wir weiter, wir müssen heute versorgen und entsorgen und unser Weg soll uns nun doch recht zügig Richtung Spanien voranbringen      Read more

      Mantova oder Mantua?

      Egal, scheint beides richtig zu sein.
      Ein schöner Radweg 30km immer dem Fluss Mincio entlang führte uns nach Mantova.
      Unterwegs 3 Wasserkraftturbinen die wohl sicher Anfang 19xx gebaut wurden, waren interessant anzusehen.
      Mantova selber ist umgeben von 3 künstlich angelegten Seen.
      Die Altstadt von Mantova ist gigantisch. Soviel sehenswerte Bauwerke in geballter Lage sieht man selten. Die Catedrale und die Basilica wollten sich wohl gegenseitig übertrumpfen.
      In der Catedrale spielte ein junger Organist einfühlsam auf der Orgel.
      Das Castell und unzählige andere Bauwerke ließen uns staunen.
      Zwischendrin immer wieder schöne Piazza mit einem Restaurant am anderen.
      Einzig der gelobte Palazzo de Te, der hat uns von aussen nicht zugesagt und wir gingen dann auch nicht hinein.
      Da es die Eintrittskarten nur als Kombiticket gibt, konnten wir auch in das Castell und den Palazzo Ducale usw. nicht hinein.
      Dumm gelaufen, müssen wir nächstes Mal anders machen.
      Macht erst mal nichts, war ein super Tag mit ausreichend Input.      Read more

      Radeln um die eine Pobacke

      Heute morgen von Parma gestartet,nachdem ich meinen Kaffee auf der Stadtmauer getrunken habe, mit Blick auf dem Po. Ich bez. mein Kühlschrank und das Fahrrad brauchen Strom. Habe circa 45 km von Mantua einen kostenlosen Parkplatz einer Gemeinde gefunden mit kostenlosen Wasser und Strom, jipi ich muß meinen Weißwein nicht warm trinken. Der Platz selber ist nicht so schön die Gemeindearbeiter haben hier ihren Arbeitsplatz, aber wenn man den Stuhl nach hinten dreht sieht man auf eine kleine Kirche 😁.so Radtour 50 km ist gemacht am Po hin und zurück als Rundweg über eine Brücke.       Auch wenn wir immer noch ned wirklich wissen wohin haben wir für heute mal unser Ziel erreicht. Mantova- kurz hinter Verona.
      Um 19 45 angekommen - um 19.50 bereits am Speisen 🤪
      Mit Glück den letzten Stellplatz bekommen.

      Mantua Day 1 Palazzo Ducale

      Today is a day of near misses.
      We could not book our train from Padua to Mantua online for some reason so we got to the train station early and a good thing we did. The route we wanted to take had a long delay because there was an accident on the tracks so the ticket office told us to book another route.
      When we had to change trains in Monselice.
      We had lunch at the cafe between train changeover. When we boarded our connecting train, I realised I might have left my phone at the cafe. With 9mins before the train scheduled departure, I ran all the way to the cafe and made it back to the train with 2mins to spare.
      When we got to Mantua, the platform was crowded and Ruby left the luggage for me but I didn't know and within minutes our cabin bags were missing. Fortunately the police managed to help us find our bags.

      After we recovered from the travels, we headed to Palazzo Ducale. Every square inch of the Palazzo was painted. The Bridal Chamber was so impressive and it got even better. It was amazing, but we couldn't find any where nice for dinner because all the good restaurants were booked all weekend. So Ruby came up with a brilliant idea of getting takeaway from one of the nice restaurants called Osteria dell' Orca finally a nice finish to our night.
