      Day 25 Murano and Burano islands Venice

      We had an interesting morning with the shower today. Trisha was first and there was so much crashing and banging that I wondered if I needed to go in and rescue her. She was wondering the same thing when having difficulty opening the shower door for her to get out. After being forewarned I tried lifting it while opening which worked ok. It is a tiny shower with a shower head that sort of goes sideways. We will be looking forward to something better at our next place.

      We walked for a bit and then got on a water taxi that took us directly to Murano. I think Trish thought she had died and gone to heaven. We did a glass blowing demonstration to start with which was great. Then a visit to that shop, and then to another glass shop, and then to another glass shop, and then to another glass shop, you get the picture? At some stage we stopped for some food at a lovely place beside the water. Trisha bought a wrap which was 7 euros, but because we ate that sitting down there was a cover charge of 2 euros each. The toilet was good though lol. Then we visited around 20 to 30 more glass shops, and each of us bought a few pieces. As I have metal walls in my house I was targeting cute magnetic pieces, while Trish got some jewelry.

      Then we joined a rather long line for the water taxi to Burano. Trish held the place in line while talking to an extremely talkative Belgian guy who was practising his English while I had various seating places while the line moved. It was a pretty long taxi ride there and we were pleased we had seats as a lot of people had to stand.

      Burano is such a pretty little town with the lovely painted houses. We also really enjoyed the shops there. Still more glass, but also lace shops and lots of lovely linen clothing. We were probably there for around 2.5 hours just meandering around and taking pics. We then stopped for a snack and Trish had an Aperol spritz which has become her drink of choice.

      The queue to get back was even more crazy. We were all in an orderly lane before going through a turnstile. And then the corridor widened a bit, and lots of people jumped the queue. So there were about 8 people wide in this enclosed area, and then they opened the gate for people to advance towards the boat coming in. Everyone just pushed at the same time to get through the 2 people wide gate. Trisha was squashed up against the barrier and it was pretty unpleasant. But, we did manage to get a seat in the taxi so we were happy then.

      Earlier in the day there was a squish of people coming through a narrow street which was shaded. There was a shortish woman walking down in with her umbrella up saying come on everyone, just push through. I had to say “ it would be a lot easier if you put your bloody umbrella down!” There were some lovely quiet areas to go on Burano though with grass even.

      So supermarket on the way back after we were on the mainland, and we had a nice salad with cheese for dinner. It was dark by the time we reached our hotel so it was quite a big day.

      And the thing that is annoying me most is the bug bites. I did bring my special creme from Bali that soothes the itching, but I need more. Will be off to the pharmacy in the morning for some antihistamine. The first bites were on my legs and were like midge bites. But yesterday a definite mosquito bite appeared on my tummy and now I have 2 more on my lower back. I react to mozzie bites so they are bit obvious. I had heard of lots of people being bitten here so brought bug spray but obviously need to apply it to more places.

      14,872 steps and 25 degrees. Even had my light scarf over my shoulders briefly tonight!      Lue lisää

      Venice

      We left Rome at 5:45 in the morning to catch a train. I was surprised that so many people were up jogging and going to work. It was also the first time that I went on an underground train which was super deep down. We then got on a double decker bus that took us 7 hours to Venice. In Venice we checked in at our apartment which was really snug with a lot of bricks. Apparently when it rained too much the apartment flooded ankle deep because the sea level is so high. We then went for a walk after dinner and got the best ice cream I think I have ever had. It was salted peanut caramel! It was extremely delicious.
      On the way back we did get lost in the streets of Venice so there was a-bit of de touring going on. But while we were lost I noticed that people (that I assumed were locals) used the more empty squares away from tourist spots where they played with their dogs and hung out with their friends.

      On our second day in Venice we went out onto the streets to have a look around and go to a famous church called St Marks. On our way we got distracted by another church which had an exhibition of Jesus’ life where someone had made all the scenes out of the Bible. They even put hand made clothing on to the wooden figures which was really cool to see. We went to St Mark’s square and half of it was covered in water. We weren’t allowed in the church sadly because we were dressed inappropriately. As if a red head was gonna wear long pants and a long sleeve T-shirt on a 30 degree day! So instead we went on a Gondola boat on the river which was really fun. It seemed that everyone that lives in Venice knows each other because the Gondola driver talked to everyone he passed in Italian. We also discovered that it’s not just Rome that has cheap things
      It’s all of Italy so we got to go out for dinner again in Venice and I had the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had in my life. I also had spaghetti carbonara. So all in all I came out of Venice now having a new favourite place and having the best hot chocolate and the best ice cream. And I think Venice takes top spot on a favourite places beating Rothenburg because it wasn’t too loud because it only had boats, I liked the colourful buildings and ( most importantly) good food.       Venice

      Another early morning this morning because we had to catch a ferry from the main land to the island for our gondola ride through the canals of Venice. We were told this hostel would have the best breakfast on the trip. Yeah, that's not true. It doesn't come anywhere near the Sorrento breakfast lol. The eggs were really watery, and the bacon was slimy and the opposite of crispy. It definitely needed a couple more minutes. They did have yogurt and granola, though, so that's good enough for me. We all got on a train to get to the ferry, both of which were chaotic experiences. Especially finding the right ferry for all 30 of us. Once we finally got there, the first thing I noticed was how many people were on the island. It was packed. We had to speed walk through the crowds of people who walk like their on a Sunday stroll. I actually hate slow walkers. Because it was already 24 degrees at 10 am, Pearse and I had to put sunscreen on, and we were still walking faster. We were broken up into 6 groups with 5 people per boat. The boats are pretty small, so everyone got to know each other pretty well. Maybe some of us got a little too comfortable lol. Despite the boats being small when we passed another boat, we were uncomfortably close to the wall, and the other boat it was so narrow. I really liked the metal jutting out from the front of the boat. It could have been on some warships lol, they were intimidating. They looked like an axe head almost. After the gondolas, we had all day to tour around and see what's up. There was a dinner that Pearse and I didn't sign up for. Bec gave us a challenge where we had to make a collage of different photos. So we got lunch and started getting our photos ready while walking all around Venice. We managed to kill about 3 hours when we met up with a bigger group for some cocktails in the sun. The 8 of us hung out until some of them left for their dinner. The rest of us went to go find a different bar. In hindesite, that was a mistake because we couldn't find anything cheaper or big enough to fit all of us. While looking, Pearse saw an £22 screwdriver. That's actually fucked up lol. After aimlessly walking for what felt like hours, we got back to the original bar. When we got there, everyone was too tired from drinking in the sun to even speak. We just sat there staring off into the distance or on our phones. I really liked Venice, but I don't think we needed 12 hours there. It also doesn't help all we had for lunch was a charcuterie board split between 3 of us. Venice was just too expensive. We took the ferry back to the mainland to catch a train where we finally got to mcdonalds. We rocked up to the hostel with our food and just sat outside with a group just chatting and chilling out. Overall, it was a really fun day, but the sun really drains you.Lue lisää

      Last Pints in Venice

      Hi all its Athena here,

      We are in an Irish pub having our last drinks in Venice before we choof off to Greece.

      Considering I only had a couple of hours sleep due to someone galavanting with the stars last night & not having charged her phone so there was no way I could contact her.

      Yes my friends Sandra rocked up at 2am this morning after having the time of her life. I'm so happy she forced herself in going as she met people she had a common ground with & was able to play with.

      Hi there, Sandra back again.

      We caught the yellow Alilaguna boat to the airport. It took approx 1 hour.

      Whilst on the boat, I looked up on YouTube, the red carpet for The King at Venice . I found it and watched a 49 minute video of the stars from red carpet arrival to entering the cinema and lived the whole thing again.

      At the 47min and 19 second mark, from behind, I see Timmy walk straight to me. The bloody security guard stood in the way!!!
      but I can see myself in there in my Gala summer dress, talking to him, shaking his hand him signing my programme.

      I have only watched this about 5 times. Athena just rolls her eyes.

      We caught our plane and sat there acting like stupid kids
      A voice that sounded like Effie (Mary Coutas) to me comes over the speaker. I remember seeing the stage play 'Wogs out of Work' whilst at high school and thought that is my only reference for Greek training!

      We kick down in Athens at 7.40pm.
      From the plane the orange lights of Athens light up across the ground.

      Woohoo

      Athena Falls madly in love with our transfer driver. She is giddy.

      We arrive late at night so hitting the hotel we dash up to the rooftop bar.

      We have a major view of the Acropolis up high all lit up in a golden glow.

      We just sit and stare.

      The drinks are strong We only have 2 each and we end up smashed.

      We talk about commitment vs just sex in relationships.
      Athena can hardly stand.
      I need the toilet urgently.
      We somehow make our way down the stairs and our key fails. Shit!

      We go to reception who fixes things. The elevator is full so we run up the stairs to the third floor, on the way I spy a WC and go in.

      I hear Athena say 'that is the men's'.
      I say be quiet as she is too loud and it is midnight.
      Next I hear very loudly 'Omg that is a waterfall!!'

      I say shuddup.

      We get into our room thank God.
      But I left my bag in the men's wc!!!

      Goodnight at 12.09pm

      (past midnight)

      Venedig gehört mittlerweile fest zu unseren Urlauben am Gardasee dazu und natürlich wollen wir auch Mama und Papa diese wundervolle Stadt zeigen.

      Die Stadtgemeinde Venedig besteht eigentlich aus drei Teilen, die alle einen sehr unterschiedlichen Charakter haben: Das Venedig, das alle kennen - die Lagunenstadt mit ihren romantischen Kanälen und herrlichen Palästen, wo es keine Autos gibt - aber immer viele Touristen: das ist eigentlich nur ein kleiner Teil der Stadt. Der größte und bevölkerungsreichste Teil von Venedig, das relativ unscheinbare Stadtviertel Mestre, befindet sich auf dem Festland. Der dritte Teil der Stadtgemeinde Venedig besteht aus den anderen Inseln der Lagune: Murano, Burano, Torcello, Lido di Venezia und Pellestrina.

      Das, was Venedig als Stadt so einzigartig macht, ist die totale Abwesenheit von Autoverkehr. Mit Ausnahme eines kleinen Teils der Stadt am Ende der Brücke, die die Lagunenstadt mit dem Festland verbindet, ist Venedig eine einzige große Fußgängerzone, praktisch ohne moderne architektonische Elemente, was mit zu dem Eindruck beiträgt, dass Venedig etwas Zeitloses hat, als ob es die Vergangenheit überdauert hätte.

      Die Häuser, Straßen, Kirchen und Paläste Venedigs wurden auf Millionen von Holzpfählen errichtet, die man in den Untergrund rammte. Man hatte früh entdeckt, dass sich unter der Schlammablagerung fester Lehmboden befand, und dass sich auf Pfählen, die man in diese Schicht hineinrammte, Gebäude errichten ließen. Die Bauten selbst wurden dann allerdings, um Gewicht zu sparen, aus leichten Tonziegeln gebaut.

      Viele Gebäude sind heute, trotz vieler erkennbarer Restaurierungsbemühungen, in schlechtem Zustand. Das Wasser, vor allem die periodischen Hochwasser, machen vor allem den Erdgeschossen stark zu schaffen. Zum anderen wurden seit dem Ende der Republik Venedig am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts die Pflegemaßnahmen an Bauten und Kanälen vernachlässigt. Trotzdem werden die Wohnungen in der Altstadt immer teurer, oft bezahlbar nur von Geschäften und Hotels, weshalb viele Einwohner der Insel aufs Festland gezogen sind und viele Wohnungen seit längerem leerstehen. Ein Spaziergang durch die Gassen der Altstadt, vor allem wenn man sich abseits der Touristenströme hält, weckt den starken Eindruck, dass Venedig in einer Art majestätisch-romantischer Nostalgie lebt.       Tag 7: Rialto Markt und Abfahrt

      Heute Morgen haben wir die Zeit genutzt und sind vor den meisten Touristen zum Markt an der Rialto Brücke gegangen. Sooo viel frisches Obst und Gemüse und so leckerer, frischer Fisch 😍 wenn wir jetzt gleich nicht stundenlang durch die Hitze fahren würden hätten wir uns erstmal mit Fisch eingedeckt.
      Es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall vor 9 Uhr dort zu sein, denn dann ist es noch schön leer :)
      Jetzt checken wir aus und ab geht es, leider, in Richtung Deutschland.      Lue lisää

      Venedig: Dies und das

      Tipps für die Serenissima :

      👍🏻 Bequeme Schuhe. Ich bin von Dienstag Mittag bis Mittwoch Abend 29 km gelaufen und obwohl es ja am Wasser liegt, gibt es verdammt viele Treppen! Stöckelschuhe kann man getrost zuhause lassen, außer man will abends ins Casino etc.
      👍🏻 Vaporetto Ticket online kaufen und dann am Automat mit dem QR Code das eigentliche Ticket ausdrucken (vermeidet langes Warten an den Verkaufsstellen und spart fünf Euro, wenn man es 30 Tage vor Ankunft kauft) Wir hatten ein 48h Ticket für 30 Euro, es gilt ab der ersten Entwertung. Wir sind 7 Mal gefahren, macht ~ 4,30 pro Fahrt. Das ist fair!
      👍🏻 leichtes Gepäck, außer ihr habt einen Kofferträger 😃 !Die vielen Brücken bei der Planung nicht vergessen 😉
      👎🏻 Ich gehe niemals dort essen, wo es mehrsprachige Speisekarten gibt oder Leute versuchen, Kunden reinzuquatschen
      👍🏻 Je weiter man vom Markusplatz und der Rialto Brücke weggeht, umso schöner wird Venedig und umso günstiger kann man essen, wobei günstig und teuer ja sehr subjektiv sind. Ich kenne Italien sehr gut und würde sagen: es ist hier genau so, wie am Gardasee und etwas teurer als in der Toskana und weiter südlich. Für mich ist immer entscheidend: wer isst da noch! Ich will auf keinen Fall zwischen lauter Touristen sitzen, das kann ich auch im Hofbräuhaus haben. Daher: Augen auf 😊 Denkt an den Tipp mit den Speisekarten!
      👍🏻 Einfach mal treiben lassen! Am besten in die Richtung, in die wenige Menschen gehen. Man kann sich herrlich verlaufen in Venedig, aber keine Sorge, man findet immer wieder einen Weg aus den Sackgassen heraus. Keiner geht verloren, aber man wird vielleicht niedergetrampelt 😃. Daher: lieber verirren, als mit dem Strom schwimmen
      👍🏻 Spritz bekommt man zwischen 2,50 und 19 Euro. Hier gilt das gleiche, wie beim Essen… meistens kostet er zwischen 3,50 und 7,50 Euro
      👎🏻 Ich würde auf keinen Fall in den Sommermonaten hier her kommen wollen. Momentan ist es noch recht kühl (15 Grad am Tag) und dennoch gibt es abends schon einige Mücken. Will mir gar nicht vorstellen wie das im Juli/August ist. 😖Und dann noch die Horden an Touris… Nein, lieber nicht!
      👍🏻 Ich würde nur unter der Woche hierher reisen.
      👍🏻 Mehr als zwei Nächte wären mir persönlich zu viel. Wenn man vormittags hier ankommt und nach zwei Nächten Mittags/Nachmittags abreist, reicht das aus, um Venedig ausgiebig erlebt zu haben. Das gilt allerdings nur dann, wenn man keine Wartezeit an irgendwelchen Schlangen hatte. Wir waren allerdings nirgendwo mit Eintritt, daher hat das bei uns absolut ausgereicht. Für nur einen Tagestrip (wie es leider sooo viele machen- daher ist es tagsüber so schrecklich voll) würde ich nicht herkommen. Dann erlebt man Venedig nur von der schlimmsten und overtouristed und dreckigen Seite (Menschen sind zum Teil echt sonderbar: fahren als Touris in eine Stadt, um was Schönes zu sehen, vermüllen diesen Ort aber 🤦‍♀️) Ich fand es früh morgens und am späten Nachmittag am schönsten. Am Abend (ab 21 Uhr ziehen viele grölende Youngster Gruppen durch die Stadt, gerne aus England und die sind ja bekanntlich nicht die leisesten 😃🤷‍♀️. Daher also lieber ein ruhiges Plätzchen zum Abendessen suchen oder halt früh ins Bett, damit man morgens alleine am Markusplatz stehen kann 😉      Lue lisää

      Da wir heute keinen Zeitdruck haben und auch Abendessen in Venedig geplant ist, lassen wir uns nach unserer Rückkehr von Murano ganz gemütlich durch die Gassen treiben, denn die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten haben wir am Vormittag gesehen. Wir kehren nochmal ein und genehmigen uns Rotwein und Aperol Sprizz.
      Nahe der Rialtobrücke lassen wir uns dann zum Abendessen nieder. Es gibt natürlich Pizza.
      Später machen wir uns auf den Weg Richtung Bahnhof, wo sich dieser coole Laden befindet, in dem man sich sein eigenes Magnum zusammenbauen kann.
      In der Zwischenzeit ist es dunkel geworden und wir schießen ein paar letzte Fotos - jetzt ohne SelfieStick, denn den habe ich unterwegs geschrottet und keiner von uns will nach dem fehlenden Teil der Fernbedienung tauchen 😅      Lue lisää

      Venedig

      Mit dem Boot ging es heute nach Venedig. Obwohl auf der Campingplatz-Seite das meiste schon geschlossen hat, ist es in Venedig noch sehr voll. Aber wie in der Erinnerung schön durch die Gassen zu irren. Das Wetter hält wider Erwarten. Nur auf dem Markusplatz bekommt man etwas nasse Füße.Lue lisää
