      Bis die Füsse schmerzen

      Heute haben wir das frühe Aufstehen gar nicht erst probiert. Waren dann aber um 9 auf der Suche nach einer Art Frühstück. Annatina ist kein Fan von Gipfeli was das Frühstück hier nicht zu einem Highlight macht. Einen Muffin und zwei Cafes später stehen wir in der Schlange zum Markusturm und 15 Minuten später sind wir oben. Was für eine (windige) Aussicht über Venedig.
      Wieder unten angekommen besichtigen wir mit dem Ticket von der gestrigen Führung das Museo Correr. Leider ist das Museum über die Republik Venezia nicht so interessant wie wir erhofft haben.
      Nach einer Stunde befinden wir uns wieder draussen und beschliessen das Quartier Cannaregio zu besuchen. Der Weg dorthin ist komplizierter als gedacht. Immer wieder stehen wir mitten vor einem Kanal oder einer Sackgasse. Das Quartier selber ist sehr ruhig und um einiges weniger von Touristen besucht. Wir essen ein Sandwich (sogar die sind unbeschreiblich gut) und suchen ein Plätzchen um etwas zu trinken. Wir laufen und laufen und finden irgendwie nichts. Und Zack stehen wir vor unserem Hotel. Wir haben Venedig umrundet.
      Zur Behlohnung gönnen wir uns einen Select Spritz in der Weinbar vor dem Hotel und erholen uns dann zwei Stunden auf dem Zimmer wo wir auch glwich den Aufenthalt in Rom planen.
      Abends genehmigen wir und wieder ein Apero und essen dann in einer Pizzeria gleich neben an. Etwas bedusselt vom Wein und dem Limoncello zum Schluss gehen wir schlafen. Morgen ziehen wir weiter.      Read more

      Net een wandeling gemaakt, wat gegeten en nu ontprikkelen op de koele binnenplaats van ons hostel 🙂.Read more

      Walking tour of Venice

      I had a great walking tour after the Biennale and got to see a lot of the northern area of the city (Cannaregio). We spent a lot of time in the Jewish ghetto, it was very interesting and apparently the first ghetto in history and the one which all the others were modelled after. Because they were confined to such a small space they built vertically, making some of the world’s tallest buildings at the time (like 1600s). Apparently this was a good place for Jews to live (relative to other European cities in the counter-reformation). The guide had a lot of interesting info about the city and took us to some less touristy areas that were a lot quieter. In the last picture is an interesting building that if you look closely is built on top (in front of) a church - apparently this is a relic of when the Austrians took over and tried to modernise the city by straightening the streets (they only succeeded with 1).Read more

      Day 20

      Venice to London

      Steve, Fiona and I rose early to catch the 6.50am ferry from San Marco Square to Marco Polo Airport. The trip takes just over an hour and the ferry delivers passengers to a dock right at the airport, which is a novel way to reach an airport. Only in Venice. During the journey the sun rose across the lagoon and from behind the centuries old buildings, which was magical.
      We caught the 10.40am Wizz flight to London Gatwick, and there was no repeat of the dramas of my previous Wizz flight, being forearmed against the risk of not checking in online and losing the seat.
      The flight was smooth with views across the snowy alps and then the green landscape of southern England.
      We landed in London at close to midday and met Joanna who came to the airport to pick us up. It was very exciting to see her again.
      We drove through Surrey to the beautiful town of Shere, where we had lunch in an old English Inn dating from 1475, and which has been the set for various movies, including The Holiday. The food was delicious and very English, a contrast to the last three weeks in Italy.
      We visited the 800 year old church in Shere, which is surrounded by centuries old tombstones, and which was also the set for movies such as Bridget Jones and Four Weddings and a Funeral. The scenery in Shere, with huge green trees and quaint old houses and shops, is simply stunning.
      We then drove to Godalming, the town where Jo and Asher have been living, and visited their flat and went for a walk into the village, via the canal with the narrow old canal boats floating patiently in the fresh water. The canal system in England, with its unique locks, once provided an important transportation system through the country for goods and materials. Now tourists use it for a relaxing way to see the countryside. One can travel 350km right up to the north of England on the locks. One day maybe.
      We looked around Godalming, and then drove to Guildford, the larger city in Surrey where Asher works in the hospital. We met Asher after work and went to a delicious Thai restaurant for dinner. Afterwards we enjoyed coffee and dessert before setting off for a two hour drive to Bath, where we have booked an Airbnb for a couple of night to see the picturesque town of Bath. And to visit the old Roman baths that are evidence of the extensive reach of the Roman Empire that has been so prominent in our attention as we moved through Italy over the last three weeks.

      Venedig Tag 1

      Heute morgen ging es mit dem Zug von Padua nach Venedig (4,70€/ 28 Minuten) vom Bahnhof aus haben wir ein Vaporetto genommen und sind in unser herrliches B&B direkt an einem Kanal in der Calle Moretti eingezogen und dann sofort losstravanzt. Und ich muss sagen: Abgesehen von den unfassbaren Menschenmassen am Markusplatz ist es soooo unglaublich schön in Venedig. 🥰 Mein Tipp: immer da gehen, wo keiner geht 😃! Das führt zwar ab und an mal in eine Sackgasse, oft aber auch an entlegene, schöne Plätze. Zum Essen würde ich definitiv nach Dorsoduro oder Cannareggio gehen, dort gibt es schöne Bars, Cafés und Restaurants zu absolut fairen Preisen!
      Wir haben ein 2-Tage-Ticket fürs Vaporetto online gekauft, wenn man es 30 Tage vor Ankunft ordert, spart man ein paar Euro. Das lohnt sich definitiv. Wir sind heute einmal den Canale Grande hoch und wieder runter gefahren und einmal als wir ankamen zu unserem Hotel. Haben das Ticket also schon fast wieder drin, werden aber ja morgen und übermorgen auch noch fahren. Mal sehen, was am Ende eine Fahrt dann gekostet hat. Jetzt machen wir grad Siesta und heute Abend ziehen wir nochmal los. Ich freu mich schon! 🥰      Read more

      Liberia Aqua Alta

      Ich habe einen Bericht zu dieser Buchhandlung gesehen und wollte sie unbedingt sehen. Den Bericht hat aber scheinbar JEDER gesehen 😃😃😃 aber von vorne:
      Am ersten Tag kamen wir von der Seite und sind versehentlich und wider der Regel beim Seiteneingang rein, man konnte das aber wirklich nicht erkennen, dass man das nicht darf 🤷‍♀️. Ich hab mich schon gefreut wie easy das ist, bis wir dann drin waren und erstmal geschimpft wurden, weil falscher Eingang und so und wir dann - und das ist noch schlimmer- nicht mehr so einfach rauskamen. Es ist ein oneway- System und in unsere Richtung standen alle, die schon bei der Büchertreppe waren und nun raus und/oder an die Kasse wollten. Der Laden ist ja total eng, in der Mitte steht die Gondel (die sehen am Kanal übrigens kleiner aus, als sie sind, aber das merkt man erst, wenn man neben einer steht und vor einem eine Schlange so lange wie die Gondel ist 😃😃. Naja, irgendwann (nach ein paar Minuten) haben wir es raus geschafft, nicht ganz ohne drängeln zu müssen🤷‍♀️. Draußen war eine lange Schlang, um zu der Treppe zu kommen. Nein danke… Sind etwas später nochmal vorbei, da war die Schlange noch länger. Gestern Nachmittag, kurz vor 17.30, waren wir nochmal dort (unsere Wohnung liegt ein paar Meter weiter, daher ging das ganz easy). Es war weniger los, wir sind bis zum „Garten“ gekommen, aber da war abgesperrt 😃 daher auch: weniger los! Gestöbert haben wir nicht wirklich, denn ich fand es war muffig und abgesehen davon wollte ich auch kein Buch kaufen 😃🤷‍♀️😃. Es ist eine witzige Idee und so wie ich den Laden gesehen habe, reicht es mir auch 😃.Read more

      Day 5

      Der letzte Tag

      Nun ist der letzte Tag in Venedig gekommen.
      Wir wollten uns etwas abseits der großen Touristenströme einfach treiben lassen und sind mit dem vaporetto nach Canareggio gefahren.
      Ohne großes Ziel sind wir durch die schmalen Gassen gelaufen, haben kleine versteckte Plätze gefunden und „normale“ Siedlungen der venezianischen Bevölkerung.
      Eingekehrt sind wir schließlich in einer kleinen Weinbar, welche auch die typischen venezianischen Tappas, Chicchetti genannt, auf der Karte hatte. Wirklich ganz tolle, leckere Kreationen.
      Nach dem Lunchbreak waren wir in der Chiesa della Madonna dell‘ Orto.
      Hier handelt es sich um die Grabeskirche Tintorettos, für die er auch 30 Jahre lang an zahlreichen Kunstwerken gearbeitet hat.
      Den Rückweg zum Hotel habe wir wieder mit dem Vaporetto angetreten.
      Nach einer kleinen Siesta ging es zu Truus Geburtstagsdinner in ein klassisches venezianisches Restaurant, Il Gondoliere.
      Nach einem vorzüglichen Abendessen sind wir noch auf einen Absacker in den Corner Pub.

      Morgen heißt es früh aufstehen, Koffer packen und Abschied von Venedig nehmen.

Today the buildings include the Museum of the History of the Venetian Navy and houses exhibitions from the Venice Biennial. Also in the area is the Amerigo Vespucci, built in 1931 as a naval training ship.Read more

      Day 19

      Murano

      After our tour of the Jewish Ghetto, we’re caught a ferry over to the island is Murano, so famous around the world for its high quality glass-making. We saw a demonstration of glass making and looked at all the amazing glassware for sale in all the shops. A fascinating excursion.
      In the evening we shared a meal in a nice Venetian restaurant as it was our final evening for the Italian tour together. We thanked Danielle, our tour guide who had been with us for the whole time and had become part of our group. We gave here a new yellow umbrella as the old one was wrecked due to our extensive trip. We also shared magic moments of the trip. It was sad to say goodbye to everyone after spending so long together. Steve, Fiona and I are the first to leave Italy, flying out of Venice airport for London Gatwick at 10.30am tomorrow, so we have to catch the 6.50am ferry from Sam Marco Square in the morning.

      Murano im Winterschlaf

      Ich liebe ja bereits Venedig. Doch Murano ist um diese Jahreszeit noch viel schöner. Bis zur Mittagszeit war es absolut ruhig. Keine Touristen und wenige und freundliche Einheimische. Zudem besitzt diese Insel eine Sonnenseite. Sonne, Wärme und Freundlichkeit.

      Seit Jahren wird diese Insel mehrfach überflutet. Bis zu 1.90m über Normal. Seit diesem Jahr ist das ganz anders. Dank dem Projekt „Mose“ blieb die Insel bisher verschont. Eine Einwohnerin zeigt mir noch ein Foto, bei dem die gesamte Familie noch Wasser aus ihrem Laden schöpfen musste. Zudem ist sie sehr erfreut über das Ausbleiben der grossen „Monsterschiffe“.
