From AusTx to Davis Mountains SP

    5 июня 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Finally packed and ready to roll, with enough of a route planed out. Jay, Jan & I took off about 10AM. A few stops : gas, a picnic lunch, a couple of rest areas and arrived at campsite 70 in the Davis Mountains Texas State Park. Not a bad campsite but next time I will reserve site #78, it was a little closer to the restrooms but not too close and it had shade.

On our first hike the next day we got a bit of a late start and it was already hot. Jay wanted us to turn around after about 30 minutes and we should have listened to her. When we finally did turn back, we took a steep trail and Jan lost her footing and twisted her foot. She was able to scoot down to the trail head on her but and I went and got Vanette.

After sorting a few things at the campsite, I drove her to the ER in Alpine. X-rays showed it wasn't broken & they called it a contusion. And since none of us is in shape for long hard hikes we are only slightly disappointed.

    Fort Davis National Historic Site

    6 июня 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

After our visit to the ER, we stopped at Fort Davis National Historic Site. I had been here a year or 2 before. I had visited the site before but Jan hadn't ever been and it was worth seeing again for me. It was too hot (101*) to see it all but it was worth the visit. It was a site where many Buffalo Soldiers had been stationed and fit in with my summer trip when I stopped and many civil rights historic sites.

I had forgotten about Second Lt. Henry O. Flipper, the first black graduate of West Point. I would love to know more about him.

Afterwards we stopped for ice cream 🍦 Jay got her own cup and enjoyed it very much.

Later that evening we went to Marfa. We ran into an eccentric guy named 'Sleeper'. He was quite a character. Jan invited him to dinner and we had an adventurous evening.

    7 июня 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

We made it to White Sands about mid afternoon. It was beautiful, just as I remembered it. Arlie had mentioned that the Gypsum sand is so white that it does not absorb any energy from the sun. I hadn't realized that but it was true.
We were able to walk barefoot on the softest finest sand in the heat of the day. Jay enjoyed running on the sand dunes too!

Afterwards; We drove to a very secluded campground outside Las Cruz, NM for the night. It was lovely.

    No Gila Cliff Dwellings today

    8 июня 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

The plan was to stop at the Gila Cliff Dwellings and then camp at the Gila Cliff BLM land nearby. BUT the sign on the road to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument simply stated "Cliff Dwellings Closed". So we turned around. Finally found a lovely spot in a park for our picnic lunch. Then we stopped at a NM visitor center and found out that smoke from fires in AZ was the cause of the closure.

So.....we started heading north towards Mesa Verde. We stopped at a reststop with cement teepees on the way for a break and a snack. So far we have been eating pretty well and healthy. I should be keeping track of our meals but I can hardly keep up with where we are on what dates.

So this night since we had more time than we had planned (due to not seeing the Gila Cliff Dwellings), we drove further towards Mesa Verde so we would have less driving to do the next day. We ended up at Apache Creek Campground once again in national forest land.

But it was a good site and there were showers at the main center so that was really, really appreciated. We took showers before dinner, had some dinner and then just relaxed. I cleared out the passenger seat the next morning so we could ride together as it was going to be a full day of driving.Читать далее

    Exploring Mesa Verde

    10 июня 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

There are a couple of loops in Mesa Verde, both long on mountainous roads. The campgrounds are near the north entrance to the park and at a lower elevation. It took most of the day to drive the loop and then take short hikes to see the ruins and then drive to the next one. The museum and visitor center was closed but there was plenty to see and lots of signs and some rangers around some of the ruins to provide information.Читать далее

After Mesa Verde, we headed to Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.
The monument's 176,056 acres are managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It is on the southwestern border of Colorado and comprises hundreds of ancient ruins. Only a few are accessible to the general public. We stopped at the visitor center is partially run by BLM and partially by the National Park Service. There were a couple of movies to watch and the ranger gave us a "detailed" route to use the next day for our explorations.

We found a nice campsite on BLM land for the night.

Canyons of the Ancients day 2

    12 июня 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

The roads were not all that well marked and we ended up on a dirt road for quite a while. And we made it to Hovenweep which is actually across the border in Utah. We took a rather long hike in 95 degree heat around a canyon with multiple ruins. I ended up taking Jay off leash, there were very few people around, she would trot ahead and find shade and then wait for us. It was good to get back to the campsite and chill for the rest of the day.Читать далее

ПутешественникI loved Hovenweep. I went there to spend one night and ended up staying five nights because the campsites were wonderful and there were almost no others. I think the around the rim hike you are writing about is five miles. I did several other hikes because I wanted to see all the ruins and didn't have an appropriate vehicle for the access roads. collapsed before the end of one of them and had to nap under a juniper tree before my body would let me finish the hike. Midday heat, in canyons, drinking water almost too hot to drink, and no shade in the bottom of the canyons.

I decided to add an afternoon stop to the day. It was visible on the paper map but the GPS had a hard time finding it. But I saw a sign and we made it. It was hot but they had kennels for dogs and since Jay was the first dog there for the day, she got the biggest, nicest kennel, under some lovely shade trees.

It was a 3 mile drive from the visitor center & kennels up to the top where the hike and ruins were. It wasn't a long hike but it was a bit steep and hot. The ruins were some of the best we'd seen, especially since we were able to join a ranger giving a tour. She was really good.

I'll have to add the details about the significance of the site later as for right now I am just trying to catch up before I forget where I was and in what chronological order

OMG We finally had a less than perfect campsite experience. Zapata Falls campgrounds was up a very long (4 miles?), winding, rocky dirt road in poor repair. Even though I kept thinking we should turn back, I kept driving on anyway! My nerves were frazzled by the time we made it to the top. And then we had to drive around the campground loops several times before we finally found an acceptable site. We did not do any hiking, the drive was enough adventure. It does seem to be a popular spot with the locals and there is suppose to be a hike up to some waterfalls. BUT even when they fix the road, I will not be coming back BECAUSE: THERE WERE MOSQUITOS! The only time ON THE TRIP we have run into the little pests.

At least it was a pretty sunset!

Loved this place and Jay was so happy to be able to run in the water. I hadn't realized there was going to be a beautiful river (or should one call it a stream?) running through the park. It was only calf deep and cool enough to cool one off without freezing one's feet. Jay and I took a long walk up the river. She was very curious about the kids. It is sort of the 'Beach' for the local kids since they are land-locked in Colorado. Every time we walked by a kid about Odin's size she would stop and stare to see if it was him. It was so cute.

I would definitely go back here. But to get a camp site one would need to plan far in advance.

Spent the night at the reststop outside Dinosaur National Monument. It is right on the road to the monument. There are first-come camping sites at the Green River Campground at the national monument so we figured if we slept at the rest area we could get there early. You needed tickets/reservations to get into the Dino Quarry but they were free and handed them out at the entrance station.

We went directly to the Quarry and toured the hall. Second time I have seen it but I still want to bring Odin someday.

Campsites were pretty full but we did manage to find a good one. #44.

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is such a huge area and unknown by all but the 'locals' from Utah, Colorado & Wyoming. There is lots to see, plenty of camping and amazing scenery. On my last trip from Seattle to Austin I discovered the area. Being on a timeline, and tired from a very long driving day, I stayed at a tiny motel in a nearby town. (I think it was Green River.) Then I did the 4 hour drive around the reservoir and decided I need to come back and camp here. So here I am.

We have reservations at CEDAR SPRINGS CAMPGROUND which is lovely. I had tried and though I finally succeeded in making reservations for 3 nights. (more on this in 2 days). We did some driving tours around the area. and some hiking.

Cedar Creek Campground was near the boat marina, lots of local fisher people there. After a long hike we put our feet in. Jay started limping pretty bad so she and I just hung out the rest of the day.

I need to upload my photos from my camera. I don't seem to see them on my laptop at the moment.

On the way to Craters of the Moon we happened across this rather unusual site and decided to check it out. Minidoka National Historic Site (https://www.nps.gov/miin/index.htm) is the site of one of 10 'Japanese Internment Camps' that were used to detain thousands of Japanese Americans during WW II.

The visitor center was closed but there are lots of signs on the trail through the area. The details of the treatment the detainees received during and after the war was difficult to learn about but I am glad we stopped. I learned a lot.

The thing that bothered me the most is realizing how many people would have supported doing it again after 9/11 to all Muslims.

Craters of the Moon National Monument

    26 июня 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Craters of the Moon is located in Idaho on a 10,000 year old lava bed. Another barely known park with an interesting history and good hikes, camping and pretty dog friendly. It was hot during the day but there is a constant wind that keeps the van cool enough for Jay. But hiking still needed to be early morning or late afternoon. Hiking through Lava Fields and learning about Lava Tubes and various lava formations has been pretty interesting.

There weren't any showers but it is easy enough to was up most of the time with just some water. But it is so, so dry! My hair & skin are a mess.

Most of my posts are being written many days later while relaxing in Seattle. Unfortunately that means: 1. I don't remember all the details and can't say exactly what I did. 2. It is a little bit of a rush job, some of my photos have not been uploaded or edited. I just could not get it together to do it all while traveling.

Next trip I need to : set a more leisurely pace, Stop to at least add a few cryptic notes if I can't fill in the details, and work on organizing my photos. Once I get caught up, it will feel like a great accomplishment and I will try to at least and one picture and a sentence every day.

I plan to go back and add more photos too.

Stanley is a tiny little town with one gas station but several restaurants, a huge lake nearby, a river with river rafting and some historic sites that we explored.

We could not go river rafting because the town does not have a doggie daycare or pet sitting arrangements. So if I ever need to make some money I could spend some time and do dog-sitting for people who want to go rafting.

    Yankee Fork Gold Dredge

    29 июня 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Up the road a piece from Stanley, ID is the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge. Several people had mentioned that we needed to see "The Dredge". Having no idea what they were talking about we happened upon a sign for it and went. I have some pictures but at the moment can't find my camera, hopefully it is someplace here in Seattle. I seem to have a problem keeping track of it.

Anyway, it was rather interesting and disturbing too. (https://yankeeforkdredge.com/)
"In 1939 the Silas Mason company out of New York was looking for a place to invest some money to help out the economy. After doing some surveying they picked Yankee Fork valley as a place to do some dredging for gold. It was estimated that there was 11 million dollars of gold to be had in the 5 1/2 mile claim.." It looked like a huge boat. The disturbing part was what they did to the environment. First they rerouted the river then they used the dredge to dig up all the rocks from the riverbed, analyze them for gold content, extract the gold and then dump all the rocks out the back of the ship and move it forward to do it again. They basically destroyed the entire river valley. One of the guides was a descendent of one of the workmen and shared some stories with us.

Nearby is the Custer Ghost Town. (https://westernmininghistory.com/towns/idaho/cu…) Some of the original buildings are still standing and volunteers had lots of info and history about the town to share. We got old time sarsaparillas which were well appreciated as it was rather warm out. The town included some Chinese workers who lived outside the actual town, segregated. And since they were not included in the US census, they had a separate record of them which they displayed.

We also visited the Stanley Museum. and then spent an afternoon at Red Fish Lake.

Camping nights were on NFS campgrounds next to the Salmon River. Definitely a lovely place to spend a few days.

Well, I just discovered that Google Maps has been keeping track of my wanderings and shows exactly where I ended up each night of my travels. And I had forgotten completely about this stop. When we left Boise, we just meandered towards Portland and not finding an actual campsite we ended up pulling off the side of the road at Lake Cascade and spent the night. It was perfect and quite beautiful. No pictures though...still don't know where my camera ended up. Wait...Google even has one of my photos!Читать далее

After our relaxing time in the wilderness, we headed to Boise so Jan could get her eye pressure checked. I had looked up some things to do in Boise, but after dealing with traffic and city congestion we decided to move on and not spend any more time here than necessary. Jay and I spent some time shopping while Jan was at her appointment and we found a park to walk around. When Jan was ready we met at a Half-Price Book store and then went to the park for a picnik lunch or dinner, I don't remember which.

And I don't remember where we stayed that night either. I think our next major stop was going to be Portland

Made it to Seattle! Heather Josh & Odin are in Montana. I didn't want to invade their vacation so we get to spend some time at their place without them. It was lovely to take showers but the kitchen and living room were disheveled when we arrived. Obviously they were in a big rush and didn't have time to clean before their trip. But Jan and I seem to have a knack for cleaning, organizing and generally subduing chaos when we run into it. So we did a lot of clearing and organizing.Читать далее

    Still in Seattle

    4 июля 2021 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Spent the day organizing and cleaning Odin's room. Then went to Bellevue to see fireworks. It was so crowded but also fun.

On the 5th, we made it to Goodwill to drop off some stuff and shop a little. And just walked around the neighborhood.

On the 6th, we got together with Lilly Vukovic and spent a day downtown:
    - Lunch in the international district at Tamarind Tree ,
    - Walk around 'China Town
    - a personalized tour of Union Station which is technically closed but the door was unlocked and the security guard found us wandering around. He 'lead us out' but gave us a tour on the way and told us some of the history.
    - Went to an art gallery and then a Glass blowing studio/gallery.

Then...July 7th, We went to Bellevue and met up with Lilly again for a hike. And Lunch.
