  • Back to the Barn

    9 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

Yesterday I worked on my route to the next rally and spent time with my mom. This morning after breakfast I made my way back to The Barn and to see my two pairs of aunts and uncles for a minute. One uncle is having surgery tomorrow 🤞.

I'm too lazy to turn on my water and electric for one night, and I suspended my internet service, so I'm staying at a hotel in town tonight. I hope the ice machine works so I can use some on my foot.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

  • Rain Gear Again

    10 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

After a nice visit with family, some I had never seen in person before (2d and 3d cousins), I got caught in a rainstorm heading to the hotel. It pummeled the area for quite some time, but was clear when I left the hotel this morning. For about 30 minutes. By then I'm stopped on the side of the road putting on my rain gear. Again. Damn it!

Now, I'm stopped for gas and a quick bite. I hit I-20 in Tyler at 1100 and want to make it past Abilene before stopping for the night.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

    11 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

I made it all the way to Stanton, TX, yesterday evening, where I spent the night.

I left this morning at just after 07:00 because I need to be in El Paso by 14:00 for the HD to change my front tire. I could get more miles out of it, but this is a good time to stop for it.

I started this morning in rain gear and heated gloves as it was only 55°F or so and drizzling. I hit two HDs and four Texas Tour stops before peeling off the rain gear and changing gloves. Nice sunny skies since around 09:30. Yay!

I'm typing this after the fact, but at noon I was on both I-10 and I-20 where 20 ends by running into 10. With all the trucks going by at 70-80 mph, I didn't stop to take a selfie 😁.

  • US 191 & Apache National Forest

    12 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

I had my front tire changed yesterday as planned, but they discovered I had very little front brake pad left, so they changed those, too. Thank goodness I have ABS because I can stop on a dime now.

I decided to keep going from El Paso and spent the night in Las Cruces at the Big Chili Inn 🤣. It was a very inexpensive place and the aircon didn't work, but I couldn't resist staying there. Also, I had a beautiful sunset view from my door 😁.

Today, I left a little before 07:00 to ride the Arizona 50 Rides route. Oh. My. God. If you ride, then you MUST do this route...with a full tank of gas. 90 miles of twisty turny with sheer drop offs and no guardrails. Unfortunately, the road is a bit rough, gravelly where the blacktop has been patched, and occasionally cambered the wrong way or not at all, so I took it pretty easy. No more than 15 over the yellow and no scraping 😉🤣. Bonus! I didn't catch a car until 83 miles in 😱! An absolute rush of a ride! And the views! I just stopped in the middle of the road to take some shots. Put this one at the top of your list!

I'm stopped now in Apache National Forest to give my shoulders a break 🤣. This part is recovering from fire, I assume.

    13 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

After that great ride on US 191, I wound back into New Mexico to spend the night in Gallup. Wow. They're really strict on mask wearing. They wouldn't let me in the hotel--at all--without one. Same at Walmart next door.

I left that totalitarian nightmare at just after 08:00 because at 06:00 the temperature was 29°F. 😱😱😱 Isn't this May?

From Gallup, I went North to the Four Corners Monument, which was closed indefinitely, then cut the corner of Colorado to go into Utah.

I'm now at the Mexican Hat formation in Monument Valley, the photo stop for Utah's 50 Rides, 1 Nation. Oh, if I only had that new Pan American Harley. Then I could zip off on the dirt tracks around the base of the formation and get a really good pic 🤣.

  • No Gas Next 150 Miles

    14 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

From Monument Valley, I twisted back down into Arizona, then up into Utah again. I was staggered by the austere beauty of the landscape. Every crest of the road opened into another magnificent postcard photo. My camera didn't do it justice.

I felt really good, so I kept going past my semi-planned overnight in Kanab, UT, and wound up on Utah Highway 14 that snaked through the Dixie National Forest. Well, it went over it more so than through it. I got a little concerned when I made the turn onto 14 because of the sign "Tire Chains Mandatory When Flashing," but the road goes on, so on I went. Besides, it's practically Summer, right? There was only a bit of snow in the shadows because, as it turns out, the summit was at 9,910 feet. 🤣 UT14 is another must ride road!

14 ends in Cedar City where I spent the night.

I left this morning at 07:00 heading into Nevada for its 50 Rides stop on the Extraterrestrial Highway. Although I plowed through the snow on UT14, I couldn't start my star trek without figuring out how to not run out of gas along the way. I could probably go 150 miles on one tank, but it would be at 10 miles an hour. Instead, I picked up, filled up, and saddled up a two-gallon gas can to get me to the end with a stop at Little A'le'Inn for Nevada's 50 Rides pic.

I'm now stopped at a rest area after making 133.5 miles. The bike says I have 25 miles remaining, but I'm adding my two gallons now. I've been doing roughly 70-75 mph.

  • Death Valley - 282 Feet Below Sea Level

    15 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

Yesterday, I made it through Nevada and into California. The first thing I noticed in Cali is how expensive gas is and that the nozzles have a spring-loaded thingy you have to depress to get the fuel to flow. My first attempt dispersed all over my tank, but I finally got the hang of it. But it's difficult to top off the tank.

CA Highway 6 through the Chalfant Valley was beautiful, splitting the Eastern Sierras as it wound southward. I stayed the night in the little town of Lone Pine.

I left this morning at 05:15 to try to beat the heat in Death Valley. I was absolutely freezing to start with, but it warmed up quickly as the sun rose over the mountains. I got gas before heading into the park...for $3.81 a gallon, 87 octane only 😭. Since I already had a full can of 91 octane, I passed up the next station at 100 miles and made it to civilization (Shoshone) at 09:15, where I used my can.

The beginning of the ride was not what I expected. Up through the mountains on those twisty roads I love. The highest elevation was around 9,400 feet, but the lowest was at Badwater Basin--282 feet below sea level 😱. When I stopped to get my 10 Rides for 2021 photo, I spoke with three guys on baggers who helped take the pics. Nice guys from Tucson on an annual trip.

Then, it was a long 50+-mile ride hugging the mountains through the valley. This was the scenery I had expected. Scrub bushes, blowing sand, flash flood signs. I had to stop once to take a photo of a tortoise crossing sign 🤣. Gonna have to research that.

I kept heading northeast into Nevada, and now I'm at Las Vegas HD for my 30,000-mile service. And replace the two bushings and retaining ring on my jiffy stand, just in case. And reinstall a little heat shield that fell off this morning. And buy a replacement jacket. It's going to be an expensive day 💸.

  • Back to Cali

    16 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

After the Vegas dealership, I went to a friend's home to spend the night. She, her boyfriend, and I went to the Arts District around Main Street to meet some folks. We found them in a little place named Horse Trailer Hideout. The bar is a horse trailer 🤣.

We didn't stay out long and I was asleep before 22:30 for a change. Not surprisingly, I was up very early and had the bike ready to roll before 07:00 when they got up, so I was on Interstate 15 headed south before 08:00. Pretty sure I missed the heavy traffic flowing back to Cali after a weekend in Vegas, but the corridor was still busy.

I'm stopped now at the Victorville Harley after having stopped for a large and satisfying lunch at Peggy Sue's. Pretty cool place and a great hot pastrami and swiss sandwich with apple pie a la mode and coffee to top it off. Yummy!

  • Flat Tire on a Mountain in the Dark 😭

    17 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

I had a nice time yesterday as I continued on my route to hit a few more HDs before winding into the mountains for California's 50 Rides picture. A few minutes later, the day turned on me.

I got a flat coming down the mountain. I pulled into a dirt area to reinflate it, but bubbles came out of the cable stem nut, which indicated a problem with my tube. So, I called my insurance roadside assistance, Progressive, who found a tow company at 17:45. After a very long wait--over 4 hours (long story why)--the super nice driver Shi picked up me and Willie and took us to the LA HD because it's open on Mondays. We unloaded the bike at 01:00. Luckily, there was a hotel next door to the dealership and they had a room for me. I won't type the problems I had with Progressive, but I will tell you that I was on the phone with a supervisor at 08:00 this morning. 😡😡😡😡😡 (USAA subcontracts motorcycle coverage through Progressive.)

So, now I'm at the Los Angeles HD in Fullerton having the flat fixed and trying to figure out how to salvage the rest of my planned route. At least I don't have to go back up the mountain 🤦.

  • The Hollywood Sign

    18 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

My flat was fixed and I didn't have to replace the tire. The motel I am staying in on Wednesday had Monday and Tuesday available, so I checked in yesterday afternoon. I need a break anyway.

On the way to the motel, I dropped off my chaps at a leather repair shop. One zipper pull fell off yesterday morning, and quite a bit of stitching was coming undone. They should be done tomorrow.

There was a Tacos y Birria La Unica food truck outside the repair shop, so I had two tacos for lunch. Shredded chivo (young goat). Delicious!

My ankle and foot are much better although my toes still hurt to bend. I'm shifting gears without issue now; almost back to normal there.

Today I slept in, then visited the Griffith Observatory grounds where you get a great picture of the iconic Hollywood sign, Venice Beach, and a couple of HDs. I'm at California HD now.

After laundry, I went to the Glendale HD to register for the Old Spanish Trail HOG Touring Rally. Once I got back to the room, my foot and ankle were pretty sore, so I didn't go back for the dinner. I still had food in the room anyway.

This morning, I headed into Angeles National Forest. I got about 20 miles in and saw the dreaded sign, "Road Closed Ahead." About that time, a group of bikers was coming down the mountain and gave me the turn around signal. So I did and met up with them at the bottom. They were also on the rally. The lead was a nice guy named Ben from a California HOG Chapter, and he let me jump in with them.

We're now back on the route and have stopped at Arrowhead Lake for lunch. Everything up here looks like a dime store window version of Bavaria. Sad compared to the real thing, but I guess the folks here think it's cool.

The ride with the guys yesterday was great. It was nice to ride with a group again.

After reaching Victorville, CA, the HD had a hamburger/hotdog meal for us, then a few of raffle prizes.

Side note: Each evening, there is a banner everyone signs, roughly 3 feet long and 2 feet high with the rally logo on it. I was sitting by the banner eating my burger when a lady came up to sign. We said hi, then she told me how her husband had won one of the raffle prizes the night before. But SHE had to carry it on HER bike, so HE was absolutely NOT allowed to win anything else. She had no more room for his stuff. An hour later, the banner went up for raffle. She won it. 🤣🤣🤣

Today, I'm riding with Bill, the rally organizer and who I rode with in the Ozarks, and we're in Death Valley to get his California 10 Rides For 2021 picture at Badwater. I got.mine here last week, but the area is so beautiful that I said I'd ride with him. We've stopped for lunch in Furnace Creek, a nice oasis about 180 feet below sea level. Bill and I had a great ride yesterday and ended in Henderson just outside of Las Vegas. We wound up on some roads I had already seen on my way to California, but still great. Unfortunately, I missed a road sign I wanted to get the first time, and it snuck up on me again. I love the yellow animal signs. The one I missed warned of burros/donkeys 🤣.

As usual, the HD had a hamburger/hotdog meal for us, then raffle prizes. Remember my last post and the lady who won the banner? Her husband won something again. 🤣🤣 I can't make this stuff up.

In Henderson, I met up with a guy Lumpy who rode both the Texas and the Ozarks rallies. Unfortunately, on his way to Glendale for the start of the rally, he had a spill on his bike in Vegas and cracked a couple of ribs. He's back on the bike, and he and I joined up with Ben's group today.

We left Henderson at 07:30 this morning expecting a long day. We rode through the north side of Lake Mead National Recreation Area as soon as we got out of the city. Breathtaking.

Now, we've stopped at Zion HD for a break and a hamburger/hotdog ☹️ before heading into Zion National Park 😁.

Yesterday's ride through Zion National Park was absolutely stunning. Just incredible. I literally don't have the words. And the day just kept getting better because we dropped into Bryce Canyon National Park. Again, gorgeous, but cold! We saw a very short snow flurry, and I knew I didn't want to stay up there very long. We didn't. But the cold took its toll on me because the batteries in my heated gloves ran out 75 miles before we got to our hotels in Richfield, Utah. Brrrr!

Today was a shorter day, so we didn't roll until 09:00. But immediately we hit an altitude of 8,385 going over a couple of passes. Because of yesterday's near frostbite, I saved my batteries and didn't turn on my gloves until I couldn't take it anymore. Soooooo worth it though because we took a side trip into Capital Reef National Park. Oh. My. God. Another drop-dead gorgeous canyon. Just incredible natural beauty. So pretty that I and another guy lost the group because we stopped so many times to take pictures 🤣.

Now the two of us are stopped for lunch at Dukes Slick Rick Grill in Hanksville, UT. It's a haven for John Wayne memorabilia.

Picking up yesterday's ride story, after we left Hanksville, we caught up with the rest of the pack in the town of Moab, then took Highway 128 north along the Colorado River. Another jaw dropping road. Once we came out of the canyon, we wound up on a high plateau where we could see snowcapped mountains and the canyon walls. I had to stop for pictures. One of the guys stopped with me, and of course we lost the pack. But it was only another 85 miles or so to Grand Junction, so we took our time and eventually made it.

There wasn't a dealership meal last night, but we did have Road Stories at the rally coordinator's hotel. A few drinks, a small meal, and I was off to bed at my hotel across the street.

Today is a rest day and I'm using it to do laundry and catch up on these posts and pictures. No riding planned for today, which should help my foot a bit.

    26 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

After lunch in Silverton, the four of us continued tearing through the mountains. We lost Ben somewhere because he kept stopping to take pictures, but he caught me as I was making a u-turn. I thought I saw a massive pile of dinosaur poo 💩, but it turned out to be a hot spring 🤣.

We ended a great day of riding in Durango. My hotel was right by the river. Nice. We had a great BBQ dinner at the dealership, the a couple of the guys and I stuck around to have a few beverages in celebration of one of their birthdays, his 60th! The kicked us out when they closed, but what a great time just sitting around b.s.ing. 🤣 And howling at the full moon 🐺🌕.

I told the guys that I wanted to add an extra loop to today's ride. It has the New Mexico 50 Rides stop and is called the Enchanted Circle. They agreed...if I led them. I said no problem. There will only be 4 or 5 of us. Well, this morning, everyone showed up, so we have 10 motorcycles following me today 😳.

Nah. It's actually going very well. Smooth. We had a great run with broad sweeping turns going up and over a mountain range in Carson National Forest. Then we popped out on the flats to the northwest of Taos and stopped at the Rio Grande Bridge. Wow. We even saw big horn sheep.

Now we're stopped for lunch at a little Mexican food place. We're sitting outside and just as I and a couple of others began eating, a dust devil came through the patio. Literally. We tried to save the food, but when we lifted our heads, everything was covered in dirt and pebbles. I laughed until I cried. Hysterical. I remember someone yelling, "What the hell is happening?!" I'm laughing hard right now thinking about it. The restaurant remade all of our plates. Stop there if you're in the area: Toribios, 1630 Paseo Del Pueblo Norte, Taos, NM 87571.

  • Back to Texas

    27 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

After our devilish lunch, we rode the Enchanted Circle, a loop of highways 532, 38, and 64 encircling Wheeler Peak. Beautiful scenery and some great twisties. We stopped at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial near Angel Fire, which was difficult for a couple of the guys who had been in the war. A beautiful garden with a chapel open 24/7.

After looping back to Taos, I continued to lead, but when I hung a left away from the river towards the mountains, the back part of the group disagreed and turned around. Oh well, their loss.

The four of us continued--a fifth caught up--and we took the High Road to Taos through the mountains instead of following the river. Follow highways 518, 75, 76, and 503 north to south.

    More info: https://web.archive.org/web/20090804190933/http…

I tell you, those guys missed the best part of the day. I rode them hard through handlebar gripping, squiggly twists and perfectly cambered, sweeping curves. We eventually popped out on top of the ridge with Santa Fe in the valley below. What a great ride!

When we pulled into the dealership a little later than expected but still in time for dinner, we found we had beaten the folks who turned around 🤣. I won a handlebar leather whip and a neck gaiter, and two guys gave me a shirt, so I wore a lot of clothes to my hotel that night 🤣. So ended a terrific road rally made better by the company I met along the way 🤟.

This morning, I managed to pack all the new stuff and roll out about 08:15. I was supposed to have breakfast with a couple of the guys, but the previous night's goodbyes were enough to last, so I hit the road.

I made it to the Albuquerque for the HD photo, then jumped on I-40 to tear back to Texas. I took a photo from the road of the half-buried cars at Cadillac Ranch, but kept rolling because so many other people had stopped. Then a quick pic at the Amarillo HD, a turn north for a Texas Tour stop, then another beeline down I-40 into Oklahoma.

Remember the gas can I bought for my 150-mile sojourn down the ET Highway? Well, I'm still carrying it, and because it has gas in it, I find myself pushing Willie to go just a bit further every tank. He didn't like it today. We went 110 miles before the light came on. Then another 23 miles before the remaining indicator stopped counting down and just said low. Then another 9 miles until the indicator started flashing and the red alarm indicator came on. Then the final 1.7 miles with me drifting on the downhills and into the gas station. By the time we got to the pump, the gas gauge was so confused it kept flipping back and forth from empty to half full. Willie took me 143.7 miles on one 3.5-gallon tank running around 3,000 rpm most of the way. I don't think we would've made 144.

After gassing up, I paused in Lawton at the HD to find a hotel. The closest available place was in Duncan, so I began racing the storm. I got pretty concerned when I passed a Storm Chaser van with the driver talking on the CB and staring at the clouds 😳. But I made it to the hotel with enough time to unload and park the bike under the portico 😁. I was pretty tired though and almost popped the clutch a couple of times in the parking lot. Now, I'm watching the lightning, listening to the thunder, and breathing a sigh of relief that I didn't get caught in it.

  • Willie is mad at me

    28 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

I left Duncan at 09:00 after checking that the weather had passed, but the sky was still dark, so I soon stopped to put on my rain jacket, just in case.

Good thing I did, because about 15 minutes before I got to Wichita Falls the sky opened up. But that was okay because I was headed to Red River HD there to have them check why my check engine light is on.

Guess what? Willie is mad at me for almost running out of gas and almost popping the clutch. The new codes that caused the light to come on had to do with the fuel sender and the oil pressure. It doesn't look like I did any damage, but I will certainly try to avoid repeating those situations.

Now I'm just leaving the dealership after waiting for the rain to stop.

  • Resting

    29 Mayıs 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

I made it back to DFW with no issue, but I have to remember that I can only lane split in California 🤣.

Now I'm just kicking back on the couch and rating my still swollen and sore ankle and foot. No pics today.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

  • On The Road Again 🎶

    6 Haziran 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

After a week with my mother and taking care of stuff around the house, as well as a follow-up appointment about my foot AND my COVID vaccination, Willie and I are back on the road again!

On my way to The Barn, I hit two Texas Tour stops and an HD. Now, I'm readjusting my pack a little bit and making sure my truck battery isn't dead.

On a sad note, today would've been my father's 80th birthday. Missing him terribly.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

  • Beating The Storm

    7 Haziran 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

I tore out of Emory at 0840, then beelined to Tyler before heading to the Harley dealership in Texarkana, where I am now. I'm ahead of a big storm and trying to keep it that way, but it looks like it's catching me. Fingers crossed for me🤞🤞🤞!!

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

  • Still Eastbound

    8 Haziran 2021, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

I beat the storm last night! No rain and no rain gear needed yesterday. But no sooner had I checked into my hotel room in West Memphis, AR, than the skies opened up. This morning, the rain continues, so yucky rain gear today ☹️.

The I-40 bridge crossing the Mississippi River is closed and will be closed for a very long time. Inspectors found cracks in the load bearing steel beams, so all eastbound traffic is being diverted to the I-55 bridge a few miles south. That's the way I needed to go anyway, but it took 20 minutes to go 2.5 miles this morning. In the rain 😩.

I hit the Memphis HDs and even dropped down into Mississippi to hit Southern Thunder before heading northeast towards Tennessee.

Now, I've stopped at Moonshine HD on the south side of Nashville. About 50 miles ago, I outran the weather, so I'm taking off my rain gear now. Yippee😁! I'm also buying a gas tank cap because I dropped mine at my last gas stop and the whole thing fell apart ☹️.

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️
