      Tag der Erholung

      Der heutige Tag stand ganz im Sinne der Entspannung 💆‍♀️
      So ging es für uns nach dem Frühstück direkt zum Pool 🏊🏼‍♂️
      Dort verbrachten wir nahezu den ganzen Tag und genossen den Blick auf Pool und Meer 🌊

      Am letzten Abend sollte es noch einmal mit der Fähre nach Valletta gehen. Dort angekommen machten wir es uns in einem der vielen Restaurants, welche sich in schmalen Gassen befinden, gemütlich und ließen es uns noch einmal richtig gut gehen 🤤
      Danach machten wir noch einen ausgedehnten Spaziergang und ließen uns vom Nachtleben der Stadt treiben. Wir spazierten durch die vielen Gassen und konnten nahezu an jeder Ecke Live Musik hören.

      An dem Open Air Theater lief zeitgleich ein Konzert welchem wir von außerhalb auch ein wenig lauschen konnten.
      Vicky fand die Straßenkünstler so gut, dass teilweise auch eine kleine Spende geflossen ist ☺️
      Auch neue nationale Gerichte mussten von uns noch einmal probiert und diesmal für gut empfunden werden.

      In Sliema angekommen gab es für uns ein letztes Mal ein Eis bei unserem Händler des Vertrauens ehe es zurück zum Hotel ging.      Read more

      Mit dem Wohnmobil erkunden die Eltern von Chris nun den Heimweg.
      Ab jetzt sind wir etwas abhängigen von Unterkunft, sowie Koch- und Duschmöglichkeit.

      Day 44

      Valletta Teil 1

      Heute haben wir mal die Altstadt erkundet - definitiv ein Besuch wert!
      Mit der Kirche des Hl. Publius am ersten Bild begann man 1733 zu bauen, 1792 wurde sie dann geweiht. Die Zerstörungen aus dem 2. Weltkrieg wurden danach rekonstruiert.
      Die "Indipendenza" auf dem zweiten Bild wurde 1989 zum 25jährigen Jubiläum der Unabhängigkeit von Großbritannien am 12. September 1964 errichtet. Sie ist 8,5 Meter hoch und schreitet mit der Flagge in der Hand in die Ungewissheit und versucht sich von den Fesseln der Vergangenheit zu befreien.
      Das Cristus König Denkmal wurde in Gedanken an den 1913 abgehaltenen Eucharistischen Kongress errichtet.
      Der Tritonenbrunnen ist das Ergebniss eines Gestaltungswettbewerbes im Jahr 1952, der ausgeschrieben wurde um den Platz der ehemaligen Lünette von St. Madeleine vor dem Eingang der Stadt neu zu gestalten.
      Am fünften Bild bekommt man einen Eindruck der wirklich massiven Stadtmauern.
      Das Stadttor, welches zwischen 2011 und 2014 neu gestaltet wurde, bringt etwas Modernität in die alten Stadtmauern.
      Na einem Sprint über die Stiegen hat man Hunger und wo gibt es mehr Auswahl als in einem Foodmarket? Das Gebäude stammt aus dem 16.Jhd und war damals schon eine Markthalle. Das Bleib es auch über die Zeit und wurde immer wieder mal renoviert, zuletzt 2016, wo man 14 Millionen in die Hand genommen hat um es so zu gestalten, wie man es jetzt kennt.      Read more

      Valletta Teil 2

      In der Nationalbibliothek findet man Bände von den Kreuzrittern aus dem 16. Jhd. Gegründet würde die Sammlung vom Johanniterorden und später zur Nationalbibliothek ernannt.
      Das vierte Bild und das letzte Bild zeigen einen Ausschnitt der Barrakka Gärten. Diese Erholungsplätze wurden bei der Planung der neuen Befestigungsanlage nach der Belagerung durch das osmanische Reich eingerichtet.
      Am fünften Bild sieht man zwei Monumente, die an die vielen Toten im zweiten Weltkrieg erinnern sollen. Einmal der große Glockenturm der 50 Jahre später errichtet wurde. Daneben liegt einer gemtlich in der Sonne😉 leider nicht ganz, es soll eine Seebestattung eines unbekannten Soldaten darstellen.
      Die Saluting Battery aus Bild 7 wurde im 16. Jhd errichtet und sich gegen Schiffsangriffe zu verteidigen, ca 500Jahre haben die Kanonen dazu gedient. Dann würden es Salutkanonen die im 19.Jhd immer um 12 abgeschossen wurden, um die Seefahrer beim Ausrichten der Chronographen zu unterstützen. Heute hört man den Schuss täglich um 16 Uhr - damit zählen die Kanonen zu den ältestesten noch genutzten Salutkanonen der Welt.
      Besonders fasziniert haben uns die unfassbar dicken Stadtmauern - man kann gar nicht glauben, dass diese Stadt eingenommen werden konnte.      Read more

      Ir-Rabat : a typical Maltese village

      We arrived by bus to Ir-Rabat, as we planned to visit several points of interest there, which will be described in later printouts, L-Imdina, St Paul's cathedral as well as some impressive catacombs.
      Still we have first been charmed by the village itself, as is it very typical from the Mediterranean area, but with that Maltese touch, consisting of the heritage of the Knights of St John, but also of the British Empire, along with the typical yellow stone of Malta.
      We have then wandered in the streets, until we reached our first stop, the catacombs.      Read more

      St Paul's catacombs

      At the end of the village of Ir-Rabat is a major funeral site, all of it under the form of catacombs. The total site, with both St Paul's and St Agatha's catacombs, allows for 1,500 tombs, out of which more or less 1,050 have been occupied (used).
      The site itself includes not only tombs, but also some places for the rites themselves, as well as some more practical places, stairs, places for tools or offerings...
      The first and biggest of these catacombs is St John's catacomb, quite large and including lots of turns and dead ends... a true labyrinth 😰 I even nearly list myself once, but could find my way back.
      Be reassured, there are red "panic buttons" placed in every corner, so that if you feel not good, you can call for help... just think of the people then, they did not have electricity, hence little light, and no panic button...
      This catacomb is mostly a Christian one, I shall elaborate about other catacombs in my next post.
      Oh, and just in case you had any doubt, Béatrice did not join me in these underworld adventures... 😊      Read more

      St Agatha's catacombs

      Once visited St Paul's catacombs, I moved to the other side of the street to the much larger site of St Agatha's. Actually, where the St Paul's catacombs consists of one very large catacomb, and two smaller ones (currently being in repair), the site of St Agatha's includes more than 20 much smaller catacombs, from very various origins, usually older ones. There are pagan tombs, usually from pre-roman times, some of them linked to Carthago, Roman ones, but also a whole lot of Jewish ones, with interesting carvings and also rite places.
      One thing that stroke me is the humidity in those catacombs, I came out of them very wet, even though the temperature there was rather cool (17/18 degrees vs. 24 outside), but also, blatantly, not sunny at all 😉      Read more

      L-Imdina & the other St Paul's Cathedral

      After rising out of the earth and finding Béatrice again, patiently waiting on a bench, we moved to the other side of the Ir-Rabat city, to the small fortified city of L-Imdina. We could wander in the streets, not very crowded... Actually, the city itself is very quiet, and is called the "silent city" as only 300 people actually live there!
      We not only visited the cathedral, nearly as buoyant as its sister from Valetta, but also had the chance to visit a few shops, where we could find quite a few souvenirs, but also numerous postcards... you may have the chance to receive one of them, who knows?      Read more

      Mosta underground again...

      After L-Imdina, we took the bus to Mosta. There we met with Pénélope who had joined us from her work near the Mater Dei hospital.
      Before visiting the Rotunda, one of the major work of the 19th century in Malta, we were told we should absolutely visit the underground shelter from world war 2, whose entrance is at the foot of the Rotunda.
      We left Béatrice outside again, and went down to those shelters. There, beyond the harsh reality ofthe underground life during the bombings, we have learnt of the rude treatment of Malta during world war 2, especially, as the English would not abandon it to the Italian and German troops, as it was (and still is) a key communication node in the Mediterranean sea.
      That is how Malta was the most bombed place in Europe during World War 2, a fact I had never heard of...      Read more

      The Mosta Rotunda

      Once we had found again the light of the sun, went to visit the Rotunda, an impressive church built under the model of the biggest Rom church's, namely St Peter. It is very specific, and has the third biggest self-holding Rotunda in the world, and I can tell you that rising to its level is actually extremely impressive, and this time only Béatrice went near to the edge to check its breadth and depth...
      We also learnt about the miracle of the Rotunda, when on April 9th 1942, during the mass, a german bomb fell on the rotunda, made a hole and rolled down to the bottom without exploding, leaving the church nearly intact, and the crowd unharmed... a miracle for the believers, which they of course awarded to the Virgin Mary, as a result if their prayers of mercy.
