  • Trenton Port Marina

    27 de julho de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

We are at Trenton Point Marina for the next couple days. This Marina is 2 miles from the first Trent Severn lock and the town here is really cute. Moki and I walked to the farmers market not far and loaded up on fresh vegetables, bread and eggs. The Marina is very nice. A boaters lounge, nice bathrooms and free laundry… fuel dock, onsite boat repair and supply that caters to transients…AND an ice cream shop! Best part, they let us ship Amazon package here so guess who is getting solar! We have put that off for years but after visiting the Thousand Islands where only four islands allow generator use and talking to several boaters with solar, we did a little shopping before we arrived. We also found a canvas guy who is fixing the side curtain that ripped back in Florida in rough seas near Ferdinand Beach early in the trip. Same curtain was having zipper issues so that will get fixed too. Today was the Marina’s Rock the Dock. Two bands, food vendor and cash bar. It was fun.Leia mais

  • Trenton Port Marina day 2

    28 de julho de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

James installed the solar today and I hit up the grocery store which is right across the street. Met the Harbor Host. He and his wife live here in the summer and winter in Cape Coral. He emailed us a very nice guide he prepared for the Trent Severn. This evening we went out for a fish fry. Very good ! On Wednesday, Friday and Sunday Quinte West (aka Trenton) has music in the park as part of their summer music series. Moki and I checked it out on our evening walk. Seems like music in parks is a common thing up here in the summer. While we were gone James and Luna walked the dock visiting with other boaters. We plan to stay one more day as Mondays are busy for me and there’s five or six locks right off the bat. Will be easier for me to help on Tuesday.Leia mais

    29 de julho de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

So today was canvas redo day. This was a bit of a disappointment. The first canvas guy turned out to be a flake. We could have handled the wrong thickness of clear vinyl and the wrong type of zipper. But the zipper installed upside down was a no go!. So today James found a shop not too far away and biked over with the canvas piece. They started from scratch and finished in just a few hours. At least it ended OK but a lot of frustration getting there. Mondays are almost always busy work days for me so very few pictures. Headed up the Trent tomorrow.Leia mais

  • Frankford

    30 de julho de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

We went thru the first six locks of the Trent Severn today rising 117 feet and traveling 8 miles. We arrived on the lock dock around 12:30 and it was mostly empty but by 6pm when the lock closed both docks were mostly pretty full. Frankford lock dock has power and showers are provided by the City. This town is small… only one traffic light but we enjoyed walking around. It was warm today… high of 88 but rained right before dinner and the temp dropped to 73. By the way for my south Florida redneck neighbors… if you click on the title of the post (in this case Frankford) it will show you on a map where we are 😉.Leia mais

  • Frankford day 2

    31 de julho de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

This was a fun stop. Wednesday nights they have music in the park… common theme… and the park was a stones throw from the boat. Tonight was oldies and the band was quite good. Lots of people 💃 🕺 dancing, some of them quite good too. Moki had a great time. His dance style is a bit like break dancing. Oh and we had ice cream 🍦. Making tracks in the morning after we take advantage of the free showers.Leia mais

  • Campbellford

    1 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☁️ 90 °F

Today we did another 6 locks up 134’ and a total 22 miles. After the last locks (a double set) we tied up long enough to walk over to the Ranney Gorge suspension bridge over the Trent River. From there it was only a mile to Campbellford. The Dock wall here is managed by the chamber. Power, water, showers. A nice park adjacent. There’s another three boats tied up on this side… all loopers. We did docktail with them in the park tonight. More docking is available on the other side of the river and town stretches along both sides. After work this afternoon I took a stroll and discovered some ladies gearing up to do Zumba in the park gazebo so I joined in. So much fun. Today’s secchi was 1.7 in 4M.Leia mais

  • Hastings

    2 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Today we locked thru another six locks, going thru all but one with the same three boats…. On our way to the last lock we came across a young seagull in distress floating in the water. We circled back, rescued, removed a treble hook with lots of monofilament line and safely returned it back to the water. It’s been hot the last couple days. Yesterday hit 91 degrees ! Today was cloudy but still warm. We are now in Hastings on the lock wall. Right next to the boat is a pet store and LBCO (Canada liquor store). Across the street is a beer store and around the corner a small grocery store. So I got all the fixings for Spritz, James got beer, Moki got a new ball and Luna got treats. No power tonight but at least there’s a breeze.Leia mais

  • Peterborough lock 20

    3 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We had a really nice slow but long cruise today. Rice Lake was like glass and the Otonabee River was super pretty but busy due to the weekend. We are now in Ashborough tied up on the top lock wall so we can take advantage of the breeze coming across Little Lake. There’s no power but it’s remote enough that we’ll be able to run our generator. From here we can look across lake to Peterborough proper. There’s a marina in town that we considered but I’m glad we opted against. This is a little more remote and we have a great view. There’s a couple museums here one parks Canada and the other a canoe museum. There’s also some nice Greenspace for the animals and the Trans Canada trail passes by the lock. Tonight is a free concert in Peterborough. It’s Elton Ron all Elton John. We can hear it really well. Total miles today 34.Leia mais

  • Lakefield

    4 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Today was a long hot day. We went thru 7 locks including the Peterborough Lift Lock. This is the world’s tallest hydraulic lift lock towering 65’ above Peterborough. I thought I was taking excellent video as we were being transported but 🤷🏼‍♀️ apparently I was not. Sigh! Got pictures anyways. We were pretty tired by the time we tied up on the lock wall at Lakefield despite only going 8 miles…it was 🥵. The Lakefield lock wall has power and showers and it is jam packed tonight. The Trent Severn Waterway BTW is Canada’s busiest waterway. Construction of the waterway began in 1833 to move goods and people town to town and it wasn’t finished until 1920! Today it’s a National Historic Site. 42 lock stations total (45 locks) and we are at 26. It’s supposed to rain overnight and tomorrow with day temps dropping into the 70s all week and lows in the 50s. We are ready !!!Leia mais

  • Wolf Island

    5 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Today was nice. We didn’t leave the lock wall until 10:30 this morning as we waited out the rain. We also didn’t have a real goal in mind. But around 1:30 we stopped at a lock wall to let the dog out for a walk and a guy there told us Lovesick lock was really nice because it was an island and there were trails. I had previously read it was a popular lock that often filled. When we arrived there was room for us but we would have been sandwiched between two large boats. We declined since adjacent is another island that is an Ontario Provincial Park with boat access and trails that we could anchor off. So we are now anchored off Wolf Island with Lovesick Island lock in front of us. There is a bridge across the water outfall that connects the two. Here we have more privacy, can run the generator if we choose, and explore with the animals. There’s some pretty cool rock features. Decent kayak exploring too. It was a great call to stay here and I didn’t find it ! Secchi 3.1 in 4M. Total miles today 15 and only two locks. Very pretty lakes along the way.Leia mais

  • Barrie

    8 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

The last couple days we made some tracks. Originally planned to arrive in Barrie on Sunday so I could take the train to Toronto to fly back to Florida for workshops… But Debbie is now affecting weather up here so yesterday we rescheduled to arrive tomorrow and then today rescheduled again. Barrie is on Lake Simcoe and it was a 25 mile crossing to get here. Tomorrow would have been a crappy ride. Today was choppy but ok. Since I last posted (I took a 2 day hiatus!!) we covered 87 miles (49 today) and 12 locks (6 today). Somewhere in that mix we hit the crest and are now going down to Georgian Bay and Lake Heron. One of the six locks today was another lift lock. This one brought us down 49 feet. I got some video 🙌. Barrie will be James and the animal’s home for about 9-10 days and mine for another three. We are in the City Transient Marina which is separated from the city’s very big long term lease Marina. We have a nice park adjacent and are in the heart of downtown. It seems like a pretty vibrant city. More exploring to come. Moki and I just scratched the surface.Leia mais

    9 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ 🌙 63 °F

More fun pictures from our strolls. This morning Moki and I hit up the farmers market and then James and I went back (a bit too much action for Moki to absorb). Barrie has a very nice farmers market!!. James got some premade meals that he can heat up while I’m gone. We also stopped by the bakery and a cheese, wine and chocolate store. Sitting on the back deck this evening enjoying a guy playing guitar and singing at the pirate cruise place in front of the boat.Leia mais

Did I mention today’s high was 65 degrees !?! This morning Moki and I went for a nice run. He’s getting really good at running alongside… really likes the cool weather too. This afternoon I packed while everyone else napped. I leave early tomorrow and will travel by Trains, 🚂 Planes, ✈️ and Automobiles 🚙 .Leia mais

  • Swift Rapids

    18 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

50 miles… Woah 🤯!! We left Barrie this morning and headed up Lake Simcoe back into the Trent Severn. Went thru lock 42 and are sitting on top of 43 where we have power and easy access to restrooms. This lock is the deepest single chambered lock on the waterway with a 47’ drop. It’s also very remote. We are adjacent to the power generating station… hence the power. This station powers Orillia way back on Lake Simcoe. There’s a sign that says Orillia was one of the first towns with its own power station, originally about two miles away, but replaced by this station in 1917 to facilitate the construction of the Trent Severn Waterway. Boat next to us said our C-Dory friends Bill & Becky (Blue Days) and Dale and Carol (See-Ya) passed thru lock 42 yesterday so maybe we’ll catch up to them at some point.Leia mais

    20 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Today we followed Blue Days and See -Ya 8 miles to a nice cove with a preserve adjacent. Moki and I hiked until the trail became flooded. Bill and Becky were more adventurous and went further. Trail definitely doesn’t get much action…a little overgrown but all good. Back at the boat James and I had a hummingbird fly up as we were sitting on the back deck. Super cool but not long enough to get a photo. We are all at anchor tonight and only about three miles from the Big Shute (lock 44) which we hope to do tomorrow. Sechhi 4.2 M on bottom.Leia mais

  • Port Severn

    21 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

We finished the Trent Severn Waterway today and are on the lock wall just outside the last lock with Blue Days and See-Ya. We covered 12 miles and two locks. The first lock (44) was the Big Shute a Marine Railway that lifted our boat 58 feet in the air over land and 100 foot down a cliff on the other side. It was an impressive ride!! The Big Shute was originally destined to be a regular lock but a ‘temporary’ marine railway was constructed instead due to a shortage of manpower and resources during WWI. After the war plans to construct the lock were scrapped because invasive sea lampreys that were devastating the Great Lakes fishery were found in Gloucester Pond at the bottom of the railway. Instead a larger railway system was built to accommodate the growing size of recreational vessels. The Big Shute is currently the only marine railway of its kind in North America. The last lock (45) was also affected by the war. It was near completion when the war started and was finished as a temporary small lock. It is still the same small today. Tomorrow we will head to Georgian Bay.Leia mais

  • Beausoleil Island National Historic Site

    22 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We traveled 22 miles today and are anchored off Beausoleil Island. This is one of the Parks Canada islands within Georgian Bay and it has lots of trails. Moki and I hiked almost 4 miles with Bill and Becky today while James and Luna siesta’d on the boat. Tonight See-Ya is on the dock while Blue Days and MB are on the hook. We kayaked to a small rock nearby for happy hour cocktails… Rocking the Rocks!!! Moki got a good romp in off leash. He needed that! Luna kayaked over but quickly decided she’d rather be back at the boat on her helm. We will be leaving the group tomorrow but have had so much fun cruising together. C-Dory peeps are the best!!!Leia mais

  • Hatch Island

    23 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

It was a lumpy day on Georgian Bay made worse by my attempts to work. I got what I needed done anyways. We had several false attempts to find a good anchorage before settling on our current spot. There’s several small islands on one side of us and a larger preserve on the other side. A couple of the small islands are part of the National Park, a few are private and have summer cottages on them. Moki and I explored two islands. One has a sort of trail. The other we climbed around the rocks on the perimeter. On that one we encountered our first rattlesnake. It scurried… all good. From anchor we have a nice view of the sunset which as I write is very pretty BUT so many little mosquitos 🦟 that we are buttoned up with the thermacell going. My pic was from Moki and my last trip to land but it’s much better now.
Secchi 6.8 M on bottom. 24 miles today.

  • Odjig Island

    25 de agosto de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Yesterday we went into Killbear Marina. We needed water and we needed to do laundry. Beyond that it was a down day for us. Although we did hit up the on site restaurant and ice cream shop. Today Georgian Bay barely had a ripple so we took advantage of the nice weather and headed 78 miles west towards the north channel. We initially were headed to Killarney for fuel but decided instead to take a break for lunch at one of the nearby islands. This one has a really nice protected bay and the water is amazingly clear. It’s so nice we we stayed and may stay tomorrow. We have had a lot of fun kayaking and walking the shoreline. When we arrived we were the only ones here but are now sharing with four sailboats.Leia mais

After looking at the extended forecast we decided we needed to get as far west as we could today. As such we logged our highest mileage day for the entire trip. 98 miles!! It was a long day. Tomorrow morning rain is in the forecast with increasing winds and windy days continue for at least several days. So tonight is our last night in Canada 🇨🇦. Crossing the border in the morning. Despite my needing to be in Mackinaw City next week to catch another fight for work, we are pushing our time up here and need to start heading south. Tonight we are anchored in another island bay. Access to shore is not quite as nice as yesterday’s Anchorage…bigger rocks are hard on the paws… but it is very pretty.Leia mais

We did not get the rain or winds as predicted .. that all seemed to go north. But all good as we left our anchorage this morning at 7am and was back at anchor 28 miles later at 8:30am. We are now at Harbor Island National Wildlife Refuge. This island has a couple protected basins. The sign reads like there are trails but thus far Moki and I have not found any. We get an A+ for trying though. Border crossing with customs and border patrol was uneventful. Basically you go to an app on the phone to report and when an agent is ready they do a video chat with you. Our agent was from Texas. Very nice. 👍.
