      Tag 5 - Teil 2

      Auf dem Rückweg stehen ein paar Giraffen ca. 50m von der Strasse entfern. Sie sind über uns genauso überrascht wie wir von ihnen. Toll!
      Wieder zurück auf unserem Campingplatz steht uns der Rest des Tages zur freien Verfügung. Ich unternehme einen kleinen Spaziergang über das Gelände und verlaufen mich promt und treffe auf eine kleine Landschildkröte und ein Suchbild mit Insekt.

      Namibia - Tag 5

      6 avril, Namibie ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

      Heute sind wir mit allen Pastoren aus der Region zu zwei Kavango Dörfern gefahren und Silmar hat dort jeweils ein Seminar über das richtige Heranziehen von Setzlingen von Samen zu großen Pflanzen gehalten.
      Man merkt Silmar an, dass er hier in seinem Element ist. Er erklärt alles sehr gut und verständlich.

      Außerdem sieht man, dass die Kavangos (die Dorfbewohner) das Wissen dankbar aufnehmen, denn das sichert deren Zukunft und das tägliche Brot auf dem Tisch.
      Silmar sagt über die Kavangos, dass sie anders als viele andere Afrikanische Stämme gut arbeiten können und mit "Geschäft" umgehen können. Wenn ein Garten gut wird und viel Produziert, dann können sie die Erträge verkaufen. Sie verteilen es dann gerecht unter den Brüdern und lassen genau das übrig, was investiert werden muss. - Das System läuft gut.

      Ich denke die Bilder sprechen hier für sich.

      Die Pastoren sind alle sehr gut gebildete leute, die ihre Gemeinden anleiten können. Alloys, Alloys und JP, die ersten Pastoren aus der Runde bilden die nächste Generation an Pastoren aus. Auch das läuft sehr gut.
      Silmar hat hier wirklich nachhaltige Arbeit betrieben.

      Unten am Fluss habe ich ein Foto von den Frauen aufgenommen, die Klamotten waschen. Alle sagen mir, dass dort jeden Tag menschen von den Krokodilen gefressen werden.
      Trotzdem Baden und waschen sie immer wieder hier, weil "das Sterben gehört zum lauf des Lebens dazu..."
      Silmar erzählte mir heute nebenbei, dass er schon hunderte in diesem Fluss getauft hat.

      Morgen fahren wir in eine der Gemeinden/Kirchen bei den Kavangos. Silmar Predigt dort und danach fahren wir weiter in den Westen nach Opuwo. Dort wohnen die Himbas.      En savoir plus

      Jour 13

      Neues Abenteuer : 2. Teil beginnt

      Ein weiteres Überraschungsei wird jetzt nun geöffnet . Wir haben heute am Okavango übernachtet:

      Entering Hakusembe River Lodge at the end of the winding gravel track, you are greeted with a refreshing image of green large trees, a collection of thatched chalets and a strip of sparkling river. You have reached the verdant Hakusembe River Oasis. River birds fly up between the reeds, as you sit on the floating deck, absorbing the peace to the accompaniment of bird calls and the gentle splashing of water, all worldly worries float away.

      Aber weiter gehts heute: abends sind wir am Kwando am Bwabwawata Nationalpark in der Namushasha Lodge (bitte 3x laut vorlesen 😉) - angeblich eine der schönsten Flüsse im südlichen Afrika….
      Beware of the Crocodiles 🐊…..

      Tanken vor der Weiterfahrt

      Wir fahren nach dem ausgiebigen Frühstück wieder zurück auf die Hauptstraße durch den Caprivi. Zuerst werden jedoch in Divundu alle Autos betankt.
      Es dauert eine ganze Weile, bis alle Tanks voll sind, da jedes Auto zwei hat.
      Alles geht auf eine Rechnung und wir müssen immer parallel kontrollieren und schließlich bezahlen.      En savoir plus

      Day 13 - Mahango national park

      Accommodation : Ngepi Camp site

      Starting our day early with a breakfast on the camp site deck overlooking the river. Goggles in hand we could admire the morning routine of all the birds, starlings, weavers, bee eaters..

      Time to go and discover Bwabwata national park. And what a highlight! A very small park just few kms away from Ngepi, with one main road crossing to Botswana and a loop to look at the animals by the river. The best part was the numerous off road routes leading straight into the river beds and sand banks, giving us many opportunities to simply park to observe. And with so much to see! The real wildlife as Lion King depicted it. All around the water, hundred of species and thousands of animals living together. All types of deers, elephants, hippos, monkeys, giraffes, ostriches, buffalos, crocs and more types of birds we could ever think of. We just sat there trying to take it all in.
      What a surprise and a gift!

      Back at the camp for a light lunch, cold beer and little swim in the river cage! (Created to enable us to swim in the croc and hippo infested waters !)
      And time to get cooking!
      Tonight's menu, Lars' 4h oxtail and red wine potjie and Leo's homemade vetkoeks, a south African bread.
      Chopping and mixing and searing and kneading. Everything was ready for the next few hours of simmering and rising.
      One last check up to smell the incredible aromas coming out and stirring the pot.
      "You should leave the potjie alone" they say.
      So we did and took a sunset stroll through the camp.
      Coming back for the apéro and a few games of Yahtzee, listening to the bubbling stew in the background in it's 3rd hour of cooking.
      As we opened to check it we found a completely black burnt gooh on the bottom. Not what the recipe looked like.
      But luckily we still had the bread !
      As Leo put the dough balls on the grill, we quickly realized that was not going to make dinner either. The dough having now turned into compact flour.
      From our original juicy oxtail Potjie and fresh vetkoeks, we were now looking at carbonized meat and brick bread.

      The gnocchi and caned Bolognese thankfully managed to turn around Leo's hangry melt down and Lars's afrikaaner's disappointment.

      Day 12 - Rundu to Mahango Park

      Accommodation: Ngepi Camp site

      No better way to be waken up than by the song of many birds. Waking up under the trees in Mukuku offered just that. Dozens of alarm calls running off all at the same time.
      Enough to get us promptly out of bed and head back to the jetty to watch the sunrise and admire the birds. Many new checks on our bird booky!

      Our next destination was just around the corner, a short 3.5 hours away, so we took our time to catch up on reading, blogging and napping by the pool.

      Getting excited for the next part of the adventure we headed off just after lunch to Ngepi, a stop-over to break the long drive to Botswana. We didn’t have much expectations for this camp but it seemed like a cool place to chill for 2 days by the river.

      A long and straight tar road to Divundu, once again zigzagging between cows, goats and smiling students, and we were ready for our turn off. Many little villages are organized here around the Kavango river, selling their wood fire and wood sculptures to the tourists passing by.

      Finally the Ngepi sign "7km down" followed by a multitude of fun notes about the road, some encouragements and generally loads of notes taking a piss at 4x4 drivers (see pictures)

      As we arrived in Ngepi, we discovered an amazing camp site, just on the Kavango river. A well decorated bar, a beautiful restaurant on a deck overlooking the water, loads of trees and thick grass to sit and read.

      We heard a little commotion coming from the observation deck: a pod of Hippos napping and playing around on the bank accross.

      But the highlight was truly to discover our camp spot, a patch of grass under the trees with an incredible view of the river. It was like stepping into a 3D projection of "Planet Earth"! The other side of the river was part of the Mahango Bwabwata National Park and looking straight from our camp we could see elephants, hippos, water bucks, warthogs, buffalo and many different bird species.

      We set up camp and we were ready to hop on the sunset boat cruise. Meandering between the pods of Hippos playing in the water, we made our way to the other side of the river, by the former "Buffalo military Camp". The soldiers have left and nature took back what was rightfully hers.

      The first sighting, one of Lars' much expected one, the fish eagle, watching proudly over the river. As we continued gliding on the water, crocodiles, little bee eaters, and many elephants came to greet with the most incredible sunset in the background.

      Coming back to camp and as starting to cook, the symphony of the night started, all the birds singing and all the hippos chatting in the water below our camp. Just then, one of our neighbors, a little girl came to tell us that the previous night, the hippos came out of the water to graze on the camp grass, "so just if that happens, stay in your tent and you'll be fine". What an adventure !!

      As we dined on Leo's sauté potatos, bacon and snails in the Potjie, surrounded by so much nature and wild life, we truly felt like the luckiest people on the planet.      En savoir plus

      Day 11 - Etosha to Rundu

      Accommodation: Mukuku camp on the Cubango/Kavango River

      Waking up fresher than ever from our little clean break, we enjoyed an animated breakfast at the hotel with an army of mongoose living their best lives by the pool.

      Time to head north towards the Caprivi strip, destination Rundu.

      As we left the Etosha area we stopped to visit the Otjikoto Lake, created from a sink hole and now registered as a heritage site. Indeed, our guide explained how in 1915, the Germans, surrendering to the British, used this lake to dump their artillery.

      A few diving permits were given to discover the site. This lake is only 150 m wide but it’s depth hasn't been confirmed yet due to the many caves. The lowest divers were able to go was a deep 175m. Surrounding the lake, many beautiful species of trees, including the python tree (see picture)

      And back on the road we are! With a pit stop for food and petrol in Grootfontein we kept going north and were quickly reaching the begining of the Caprivi strip. Our surroundings slowly started to change more green in colour. We were leaving the endless deserts of Namibia behind us and heading to the water, mainly from the 3 big rivers: Kavango, Zambezi and Chobe.

      With the many villages by the side of the road, frequent stops for cows and goats to cross and many kids coming home from school we had to slow down a little bit.

      After reaching Rundu on the Angolan border we soon turned on to the dirt road and we arrived at Mukuku camp. An oasis by the river bought 15 years ago by an older Namibian couple ready to retire. Instead they created the perfect spot for travelers looking for a bit of shade, refreshment and in our case, a fantastic view points for birds!      En savoir plus

      Rundu - N'Kwazi Lodge

      Auch die heutige Etappe wird nicht allzu lang, sodass wir ausschlafen konnten und gemütlich in den Tag gestartet sind.

      Wir verlassen den Caprivi-Streifen. Während der Tagesfahrten wird in größeren Orten angehalten, um vor allem unsere Lebensmittelvorräte aufzufüllen und kleine Pausen für alle einzulegen.

      In der Mittagszeit erreichen wir bereits die N'Kwazi Lodge. Während wir unsere kleinen Häuser beziehen, bereiten Evans und Sfiso einen kleinen Imbiss vor.

      Nach einem schönen Kaffeetrinken besteigen die Meisten einen kleinen "etwas abenteuerlichen" Katamaran. Damit schippern wir knapp zwei Stunden auf dem Okawango und erleben namibisches Leben am Fluss - heute scheint Badetag zu sein, überall sieht man Kinder und Erwachsene die sich waschen oder baden. An einer seichten Stelle zeigen uns junge Mädchen, wie zu Fuß der Fluss überquert werden kann. Offensichtlich wurde diese Stelle in früheren Zeiten genutzt, um von der namibischen Seite die angolanische und umgekehrt zu erreichen.
      In diesem Landesteil bildet der Okawango die Grenze zwischen Namibia und Angola.

      Am Abend werden wir mit einem traditionellen Essen in der Lodge verwöhnt. Anschließend gibt es ein kleines Tanzprogramm, von Einheimischen hübsch gestaltet.      En savoir plus

      Namibia - Tag 4

      5 avril, Namibie ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

      Weitere 250km von Grootfontein und wir sind heute zur Mittagszeit Rundu angekommen.

      Generell ist der Weg nach Rundu sehr Spannend. Ca. 100km vor Rundu fährt man durch einen großen Zaun und Schranke. Ab hier beginnt die Wildnis. Das ganze Land gehört den Ureinwohnern und deren Königen. So habe ich das zumindest verstanden.
      Direkt ab dort ändert sich die Umgebung wieder und es wird noch grüner, die Bäume werden größer, ... Wir sind aber auch in der Regenzeit hier, also ist alles nochmal viel grüner als sonst.
      Auf dem Weg hat Silmar immer wieder die Kirchen/Gemeinden gezeigt, die er gegründet und gebaut hat. 1 von 7, 2 von 7, ...
      Da merkt man wie viel Arbeit und Liebe hinter Silmars Arbeit steckt. Er hat alles aus dem nichts aufgebaut. Herrmann von der letzten Unterkunft sagte mir, der Kerl kennt jeden und jeder kennt ihn in Namibia. Und so ist es auch ;)

      Das erste Treffen war mit Alloys. Der mit der Jacke mit Deutschlandflagge, sieht man auf mindestens einem der Fotos. Er ist einer der besten Freunde von Silmar in Namibia.
      Silmar erzählte gestern, dass er Alloys vor 25 Jahren oder so per Anhalter auf dem Weg für ca. 30 Kilometer nach Rundu mitgenommen hat.
      Als sie in Rundu angekommen waren war Alloys ein wiedergeborener Christ :)
      Danach hat Silmar ihn zur Bibelschule zum Imkerhof im Hereroland geschickt und später kam er mit Silmar mit nach Brasilien um mehr über das Farmen zu lernen und weil sie einfach enge Freunde sind.
      Heute betreut er die Gartenprojekte und die Gemeinden.

      Sonst war heute in Rundu für uns eher erstmal Ankommen und Vorbereitungen für morgen.
      Wir haben ein paar Projekte von Silmar besucht, die er über die Jahre aufgebaut hat.
      Eins davon hat Silmar vor über 20 Jahren angefangen und die Menschen dort profitieren bis heute davon und haben Lebensunterhalt und -qualität.
      Ein weiteres Projekt läuft seit 2014 und ist so ziemlich das Größte Projekt mit großen Bewässerungsanlagen, und und und...

      Unser Ziel für morgen ist, dass alle Leute von den verschiedenen Projekten zusammenkommen und Silmar weitere Tips gibt zum Farmen.

      Wir bleiben für 2 Nächte in Rundu und fahren dann weiter Richtung Westen.

      Auf dem Weg nach Botswana

      31 juillet 2023, Namibie ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

      Der Abschied fällt schwer von dieser ungewöhnlichen Unterkunft. Nach einem guten Frühstück mit Vögel geht es Richtung Grenze. Heute Nacht war es kalt aber mit beheizten Decken war es im Zelt kein Problem. Nur geduscht hat keiner draußen bei 1 Grad C 😉.
      Wieder geht es auf die B8, gefühlt stundenlang geradeaus nur unterbrochen von 2 Baustellen. Links und rechts die Hütten der Kavangogruppe, ab und zu überqueren Tiere die Fahrbahn .
      Tankanzeige steht auf Null, das kann eigentlich nicht sein. Nach gründlicher Inspektion stellt sich raus, dass einer der beiden Tanks leckt und Diesel verliert. Nach Anruf bei Taruk fahren wir erstmal weiter🤔🙈.
      Ca 30 km vor der Grenze wieder Schotterpiste, hoffentlich hält der andere Tank.      En savoir plus
