      Bruges to Bunnik

      4 de septiembre de 2023, Países Bajos ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

When we arrived in Bruges, it was at the end of a very long journey. We were tired and really looking forward to reaching our hotel. But we still had to get there from the train station. It was “only” a kilometre along a flat route so we thought no big deal, we’ll walk. We didn’t realize, however, that the tiny wheels on our suitcases don’t work well on rough cobblestones. Well, Bruges is all cobblestones!

So, last night we scouted out a better route from the hotel to the train station. It was a bit longer, but allowed us to avoid the really rough cobblestone sections where we had to carry our suitcases. We got to the station nice and early and found a little coffee bar where we had our morning coffee followed by bread and buns for breakfast.

The train trip to Bunnik went quite smoothly and included the amazing, high speed Thalys train on the section from Antwerp to Rotterdam. Once in Utrecht we found a small grocer in the train station where we picked up a yoghurt granola fruit bowl, smoothie and a pack of cheese for lunch.

It was a twenty minute bus ride and then a ten minute walk from the train station to the StayOK hotel where will be staying for the next four nights. After a few minutes to rest and relax, we went for a short walk in the woods near the hotel and then into the little town of Bunnik to buy dinner items at the AH grocer. We found an excellent packaged falafel salad big enough for the two of us. I made the mistake of buying a Karne Melk to go with it. Took one sip and into the garbage it went! I thought it was a low fat milk, but it tasted like a sour milk.

We will be doing more shopping for meals because the cost of eating out is ridiculous! Basically, what we pay for a meal in dollars at home, we pay in Euros here. Which means that it is costing us 50% more. So, for example, at our hotel, they have fish and chips in the restaurant for 17 euros. That translates to over $25! We’ll not forgo meals in restaurants entirely, but we’re quite happy to make them ourselves as well when the opportunity presents itself.

      Castles and Mansions Bike Tour

      5 de septiembre de 2023, Países Bajos ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

After an all-you-can-eat breakfast at our Bunnik hotel, we rented bikes today. The hotel recommended The Castles and Mansions route. We thought it was a good one so I downloaded an app linked to the route, packed a lunch and away we went! It was supposed to be a 60 km circular route beginning and ending back at our hotel.

We cycled the 80 km route with our heavy heavy cruiser bikes, boasting saddles wide enough for an elephants behind and a frame strong enough to support one, in about seven hours. We did not race the course, snapping photos along the way and making pit stops for beverages and to eat our lunch. With the extra 20 km of unplanned side trips it took us about 7 hrs. It was a very enjoyable ride!

We got home in time to relax, shower and eat a packaged dinner we had picked up at the AH in Bunnik on our bike tour. We each had a beverage after dinner and played some cards at a table in the outdoor eating area of our hotel and then retired to our room feeling a bit sore after the days ride.

      Netherlands - Utrecht

      4 de junio, Países Bajos ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

      Utrecht 4-6 June.
Flew in from Heathrow on the 4th arrived in Schipol airport (Amsterdam) and had the most fun queuing in immigration for 1hr.

Took the intercity direct to Utrecht from the airport (took some snapshots of power lines obviously) after semi working out the trains i was retrospectively hit with the shock that nothing is in English its all Dutch (surprise surprise). I thought thered be some English signs but no... all Dutch unfortunately for me.

First things first after checking into my hostel i hired a little push bike to get around. Why walk when i can ride? I did a lap of the city aimlessly sightseeing. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out the cycling customs of the Dutch. I head to robert gelato which apparently won the 2019 world gelato championship and have some hazelnut and vanilla gelato. Which was nice but not "world champion" gelato sadly (4th picture). Still getting accustomed to the timezones doing a full 180 so i wander around the canals a bit and then head back to my room asleep by 7pm, rough night awake at 2am suffering from feelings of "what the fuck am i going to do with myself for 1 month alone but in the crowd." Luckily some calls home and to special people i figure out the key is to actually talk to people, do walking tours in each city and make an effort to go to places where you can talk to other solo travellers.

The next day i do a tour of the dom tower, Utrechts pride and joy standing 112.34m tall (nothing in the city is allowed to be taller than it) climbing 465 steps to the top of which were very steep and basically no surface area for the modern mans foot. Was quite cool my first experience of a gothic cathedral and something built before 1770. The dom tower was built in 1321-1382, giving an impressive view, here i also learned from the tour guide that the Dutch apparently really like Aussies. After this i do a free walking tour of utrecht which a lovely scholarly man ran and it was actually really good.

Here i learnt some of the history of utrecht.
      - For example Utrecht means bend in the river and is where the romans established there barracks as the river slows at the bend and is easier to unload boats, also a good defensive position.
      - The Dom Tower garden has a marijuana plant (2nd picture)
      - The arches of the garden in the dom cathedral were the same ones used in the harry potter films (3rd picture)
      - The stonework for the garden was perfomed by slaves and as an act of rebellion the slaves worked ropes into the structure (5th picture) so that if the ropes were removed the structural integrity of the arch would fail. This was quite a powerful symbol for anti slavery and was considered for amnesty international
      - Dom tower has a lot of bells, they ring the heavy large bells for sad events. And the smaller ones for happy celebrations (6th picture)
      - Theres a mall next to utrecht central station called lady catherine mall. This area was originally a castle/fort built and controlled by the spanish and they would extort the shipping lane (pay us a fee or we'll shoot you) and gave holland a bad rep internationally. After a while the spanish left and de-occupied the castle. Lady catherine the mayor at the time then decread that any person that built there home from the materials of the fort would be completely tax free (she wanted people to tear it down cost free for her). Moving along to the 8th picture, this is a store built from that forts materials and it is apparently a complete front, the stores never opened instead a car dealer runs a import export business from the 2nd floor and has been doing so tax free for nearly 50 years. In 2019 they got taken to court by the government over it and in 2021 it was ruled that "a promise made is a promise kept" and they won! Be interesting to see what the property sells for with rules like such attached to it

Did a canal cruise which was pretty shit. Some local kid spat on the boat from a bridge and it got all over the person next to me

Utrecht very cycleable very nice, be a great place to live, not very touristy.

      Netherlands day 6,7,8

      10 de abril, Países Bajos ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Over the last couple of days we’ve had a bit of time to rest so not as busy as usual.

On day 6 we spent pretty much the whole day getting from Alphen aan de rijn to Ermelo where Marga and Kaase live. We got in at about 1pm after taking a few trains in the morning. We then went for a bike ride around town and called it a day.

Yesterday, we started the morning at De Haar Castle, the interiors were so beautiful. In the gardens they have a little deer farm where we got some pics of the deer 😛. Then Marga and Kaase drove us to Utrecht, were we found a restaurant serving steak, which was a nice change from bread and cheese. In the afternoon Millie and I stopped into the tattoo parlour were we got a little tattoo to commemorate our trip that was personalised for us. Then dinner was gnocchi along the canals. Utrecht so far has probably been our favourite city to visit in the Netherlands.

Today was another slow day, slept in and then went to the coffee shop at the train station. Where they surprisingly made good coffee which is sometimes difficult to find. This afternoon was ‘family day’ where we met a few more of Oma’s siblings and got to talk with Greet and Henk again :)

      Utrecht - Tag 2

Also gings wieder los in die schöne Stadt.

      Domkerk

      29 de mayo, Países Bajos ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

There has been a church located on this spot since Roman times. The current church dates back to 1652, when a tornado collapsed an entire section of the apse. There was no money to repair or rebuild. So to this day the church tower ( Dom Tower) stands several meters apart from the remaining churchLeer más

      Wissen to go:
