      Stedelijk Museum

      Next we went to the Stedelijk Museum, another modern art museum that was interesting and cool. Liz was excited to see Matisse's paper cutouts. Evan is excited about all museums as usual. There was a nice grassy park outside where people were hanging out. Ramen for dinner.Read more

      Sep 21 - Arrived in Amsterdam

      We had quite a smooth flight into Schipol Airport in Amsterdam. Smooth is always good, given Doug's tendency towards motion sickness. We both agreed that Premium Economy class on Air Transat (which we flew to/from Italy in the spring) far surpasses that of Air Canada.

      We found a "legal" taxi by following the brightly-coloured and numerous arrows on the floor. The airport had a bad problem with "bandit" taxis and launched a successful counter offensive with the signage. In a short while, we were at our AirBnB - a lovely ground floor apartment - owned by Anne. Anne is enjoying a girls' weekend in Valencia, Spain while we are camped out at her place. Her mother, Suzann, graciously met us and gave us the keys and the grand tour.

      We found a nearby grocery store and stocked up on our standards - milk, yogurt, and pre-made salads. Tossed in a couple of Nutella-filled croissants and chocolate-covered digestive cookies to round out the menu. We had yogurt and croissants for lunch and then we both had a long nap. Neither of us slept on the plane so we were both knackered.

      We surfaced, feeling much refreshed, about 5:00 p.m. Since exercise and sunshine are good antidotes to jet lag, we set out to find Vondelpark. It's a beautiful, huge park that was full of people enjoying the glorious warm, sunny day. There were roller bladers, kids on scooters, children playing soccer, a guy practising juggling, couples snuggled closely, and lots of cyclists. This is the city of bicycles - thousands of them. It was so nice to see the park so well used. Not many homes here have a yard, so the park is a great way for people to enjoy the outdoors. We walked and walked, and did lots of people watching. Good, cheap entertainment.

      As the sun started to set and the temperature began to drop, we headed home (thank you Google Maps) and had the salads (excellent!) and cookies for dinner. Doug figured out how to stream classical music from 96.3 FM so we had a bit of culture with our dinner.

      Our plan for tomorrow is a tour of the Heineken Beer Factory, followed by a canal cruise.      Read more

      Rijksmuseum

      Today after Heineken we headed to the Rijksmuseum. Originally I planned to do the museum district in one day and it was much better we didn’t do it like that. The Rijksmuseum is a large museum similar to the louvre so it can be pretty overwhelming. We saw some super famous pieces there, and had a fun time wandering around. With my love of Van Gogh this has been a super cool city to spend some time in. We learned that the Rijksmuseum has over a million artifacts, but only have 8,000 on display.Read more

      Morning Stroll through Amsterdam

      This morning we got up early for our tickets to see the Anne Frank house. We decided to wake up at 8 since the tickets were at 10, and walk the canal and get breakfast. We stopped at a bagel place near the house. When we were there I checked the tickets, and it turns out the tickets were for 9! I had to get the tickets 6 weeks out so I was super worried we wouldn’t be able to enter, but they let us through without issue.

      The Anne Frank house was super cool to see especially since I just finished reading her diary when we were on the ship. It provided a unique perspective into how people hid during those times. Such a sad ending to the story, but it’s good it had been preserved.      Read more

      Hier erfahren wir Wissenswertes über den Diamantstein aus dem Brillianten, Ovale, medizinisches Gerät, Diamantschneider usw. hergestellt werden. Er ist enorm hart.
      Die ältesten Diamanten sind ca. 4 Milliarden Jahre alt. Durch enormen Druck und Hitze,
      150 -200km tief in der Erde, wird im flüssigen Gestein Kohlenstoff zu Diamanten umgewandelt.      Read more

      Van gogh museum

      Van gogh, the man had some issues which in turn created some great artwork! Pretty intense museum really. Glad I went.

      Because he killed himself he wasn't able to be buried or whatever so that info had to be crossed off the death certificate...seems legit

      We also did Anne Frank today. We couldn't take any photos but she had it pretty rough too!      Read more

      Van Gogh Museum

      Die Tickets habe ich ja schlauerweise schon vor ein paar Tagen online gekauft. Denn als wir am Van Gogh Museum ankamen, stand dort ein Schild dass es für heute ausverkauft ist.
      Nachdem wir unsere Tickets gescannt hatten, haben wir uns auf den Weg zur Ausstellung gemacht. Van Goghs Werle waren auf 3 Etagen ausgestellt. Auf der ersten Etage waren seine Selbstporträts ausgestellt. Van Gogh malte sich damals so oft selber weil er kein Geld hatte, um Models zu bezahlen. Aus dem selben Grund hat er einige Leinwände doppelseitig bemalt, das sparte Material. Auch die Werke haben wir uns auf der ersten Etage angesehen.
      Auf der zweiten Etage konnte man dann eines seiner berühmtesten Gemälde ansehen. Die Sonnenblumen. Unten gab es sogar ein nachgemachtes Sonnenblumengemälde welches man anfassen konnte, dies war eine Idee für Blinde Leute, die Van Goghs Kunst so mit anderen Sinnen erfassen konnten.
      Auch „The Bedroom“ haben wir gesehen.
      Sein Berühmtestes Gemälde „starry night“ ist übrigens im MoMa in New York ausgestellt.
      Viele viele weitere Gemälde, Skizzen und Statuen haben wir dann noch auf den anderen beiden Etagen bewundern können. Van Goghs Kunst ist wirklich einzigartig, vor Allem der Ausdruck der Farben hat mir gut gefallen.
      Einige Künstler die sich von Van Gogh inspirierten konnten dort auch ihre Werke ausstellen. Das zeigt was für einen großen Einfluss er auch noch auf unsere heutige Zeit hat.
      Insgesamt war das Museum auf jeden Fall einen Ausflug Wert.
      Wir sind dann durchs Über den Museumsplein, am Rijksmuseum vorbei zurück ins Zentrum zu Papa der es sich während wir weg waren in einem kleinen Restaurant an einer Gracht gemütlich gemacht hatte. Dort haben wir dann noch was zusammen gegessen und getrunken bevor wir uns auf den Weg machten Amsterdam noch ein wenig per Fuß zu erkunden…
      Anmerkung: der Geiger im Durchgang vol rijksmuseum war wirklich beeindruckend und hat dem ganzen wieder einmal einen ganz besonderen Charm verliehen.

      Moco Museum

      Moco is museum of modern art situated in museum's quarter in Amsterdam, in a very cute house. It's a small but very modern museum, supporting modern artists and trying to find it's place in the city. It's very popular so you need to book your ticket in advance. I would rather rate it as instagram museum, due to it's colourful & instagramable content. There is a immersive light exhibition in the basement, right before the exit and this is also the best part of whole museum. If you are visiting Amsterdam for first time, this is not a place that should be in your top 10. If you are here more often, you should try it.Read more

      I AMsterdam

      Nach der Stärkung im Dignita laufen wir wieder Richtung Innenstadt. Zuerst wollen wir ein Stück mit der Straßenbahn fahren aber die Straßen von Amsterdam bieten so viele tolle Blickwinkel das wir uns doch gleich wieder zu Fuss auf den Weg machen.

      Ein paar Parallelstraßen neben dem Vondelpark geht's durch Wohngebiete mit tollen Backstein-Stadthäuseren. Durch einen kleinen Stadtteil Direktvermarkter-Wochenmarkt mit Käse, Wurst und Brot laufen wir zum Stedeljik Museum und ums Eck zum Van Gogh Museum. Aufgrund des relativ guten Wetters (zwar nicht mehr sonnig aber über 10 Grad warm) lassen wir die Museen links liegen und laufen weiter zum "I'AMsterdam" wo sich hunderte Touristen an der Kunst des Selfie-Machens üben.

      Direkt dahinter ist das riesige Rijksmuseum zu sehen, ein wunderschöner Tier Backsteinbau der neue auch ein Museum beherbergt. Auch hier laufen wir weiter Richtung Innenstadt die 'Nieuwe Spiegelstraße' entlang und am vielen tollen kleinen Kunst- und Antiquitätenläden vorbei.

      Da es noch dich etwas zu regnen begann und das immer stärker wurde beschlossen wir direkt zum Abendessen ins Ashoka zu laufen. Die 'Klavierstraat' erwies sich als gut besuchte Einkaufsmeile.      Read more
