      Check Out to Check In

      September 28, 2023 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

After a group breakfast, it was time to check out of the hotel; knowing there would be no more girls in the windows of Amsterdam. We made our farewells and a promise that we would all meet up again somewhere in the not to distant future. Jayne and I headed off to the airport 🚕 whilst the Viking Cruisers head off to the Viking ship 🚢 and off down the River Rhine through Germany 🇩🇪 to Switzerland 🇨🇭 Arriving in good time at the airport we queued to check in our bagand then joined the slow and time consuming queue through passport control and security. After a drink and a bite to eat, we made our way to the departure gate where our aircraft ✈️ was waiting to take us home.
Some 5 hours after checking in for our flight home, we had cleared passport control, claimed our luggage 🧳, and after a short taxi ride, we were checking in to our hotel (a poxy Moxy) .......... at Schipol Airport. Our aeroplane wasn't going anywhere, and so Easy Jet put us up in a hotel for the night with refreshment all free of charge. Our hotel was very basic, thankfully it was for only one night and the room did start to look a little better as we started decorating it by hanging our clothes up on the metal framework attached to the wall. We also discovered that Easy Jet had my age wrong as our evening meal was a pizza 🍕 followed by ice cream 🍦 accompanied by a soft drink 🧃. I am 66, not 6, I argued!!!

      Day 9 Amsterdam

      September 8, 2023 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

This tripping around is rather tiring. We were in bed before 10 and I slept until 6.30. We had a leisurely start to the day and were on our bikes by 8.30 and on our way to Anne Frank’s house where we had booked tickets for 9.30. We got there successfully except an encounter with a thorn bush for Trisha. As we were early I went off to try and find an ETOS chemist for some anti bacterial cream for her, but got a bit lost so returned so I wasn’t late.

Anne Frank house was very moving, and reading all the stories again just brought it home how horrific that time was for people. There is now a video at the end saying that 30 years ago about 50 % of the world had democratic rule, in 2021 that had shrunk to 30%. So there was quite a message about protecting our democracy which was a sobering message.

Across the road was the tulip museum so we had a look at their nick nacks which were all pretty cute and then onto a cheese shop next door where we tasted a lot of cheese. On the way to Anne Frank I had noticed fresh stroopwaffles, so then we went in search of those. Biked quite a way before we found one, but while biking down a busy street I spied a croc shop. I have been getting sore spots on my feet from all the walking in the heat. I thought about bringing my crocs from nz but changed my mind last minute. Fur lined wouldn’t have worked here though. I was very pleased to find some bright yellow ones on special and wore them for the rest of the day.

After our stroopwaffle we realise there was a Hard Rock Cafe in town which is somewhere Trish had been keen to try. We had a really nice lunch there with a cool drink and the best thing was the air con. Then it was off to a local park for a lie down on the grass. Lots of traffic there, foot and bike. The most interesting was the guy walking about 10 large dogs while he was on his bike, just around the corner they all ran off chasing something, no one seemed to care.

I was pleased that I managed to navigate the 5kms back to our place without the help of google. The canals help a lot with the orientation.

After a couple of hours rest, we departed on our big night out in Amsterdam! Managed to find our way to the metro station, bought tickets for there and the way back and we were off! There were loads of people around. We did visit the Museum of Secrets which had insights about the prostitution industry which was very interesting. Then we roamed around, saw a few people who possibly had been eating the special cookies. There were some ladies in windows who were ready for business. We didn’t buy anything to eat or drink while we were out and no prizes for guessing how long we were out for! But we managed to get the metro back with no issues and had dinner in our room.

Packing up time again as we are off to Ghent and some Belgium chocolate tomorrow.

30 degrees, 12, 094 steps and around 20 kms on the bikes.

I really enjoyed the biking. I should tot up the near misses…
      1. Trisha getting spiked on her lower leg by a thorny bush after riding into the bushes
      2. Me riding totally into the info centre when I forgot I only had back brakes which didn’t work well
      3. Trisha nearly arsing off coming out of the park when someone biked to close to her and she lost her balance
      4. Motorbike hooning around the corner in the bike lane nearly taking me out and yelling imbecile as he left
      5. Very fast guy on a black bike that I just didn’t see having to take evasive action
      6. Trisha following me when the sign changed to stop and getting abused

But we lived to tell the tales!

      Uithoorn

      August 27, 2019 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

      Generator Hostels Amsterdam

      May 9, 2017 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Made it to the hostel I'll be staying at for the next few weeks and I'm with my study abroad group now. This hostel is so luxurious! I'm in a room with 3 other girls, all from our group, so it actually feels more like a hotel. It is right by Oosterpark, which is just beautiful.Read more

      Foodie day in Amsterdam

      December 19, 2016 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

It was nice to see blue sky today but it wasn't any warmer. Today we visited the Anne Frank Huis, which was a very somber experience.
Then we went and found Winkel 43 that is famous for it's apple pie. The line was out the door but I was determined to have this pie. We lined up not knowing if we would have a table to eat at. Well, I must say it is the best apple pie I have ever tasted and we did have a table to eat it at. When we left the line was out the door and down the street.
In the afternoon we did a food tour for 4hrs trying different types of dutch food. Kids did really well trying different things. The Herring was probably the only thing we couldn't eat. Dave had a piece, Brodie & I touched it with our teeth and Kellie couldn't come at it. Learnt a lot of interesting things about Amsterdam on the way. A very tiring day and it will be sad to leave tomorrow.

      Day out in Amsterdam

      December 18, 2016 in the Netherlands ⋅ 🌫 4 °C

It's hard to get used to the late sunrise and early sunset if there is even a sun out there.
Kellie is struggling as she is like a rooster, gets up with the sun and goes to bed when the sun goes down.
We caught the tram and headed back to the zoo where you could see Flamingos from the road. A wander and a few photos then continued walking to where the kids had put a padlock on a bridge the last time we were here, only to find it had been cut off.
After being disappointed we decided to find a place famous for their apple pie. After a bit of a walk and not really knowing where we were going the 'hangry's' set in. We walked past a pancake shop and decided to stop there. It was a good choice yum yum. Then we set off to Madame Tussauds as Brodie has wanted to do this every holiday. As by the photo you can see my favourite. Brodie loved the Marvel comic characters. It was very good and interactive. We decided to hop on a tram and see where it would take us. Ended up at the Museumplien where the "I am Amsterdam" sign is. There was markets set up here and we had a wander and a snack. Time to head back to the apartment. Lost Dave on the way, we got off the tram but he got stuck behind someone and the tram went off. He eventually walked back to us. Our joke for the trip now. We cooked tea which was a bit more of a success than last night. Then we went for a walk, except Brodie who fell asleep again.
All in all, a good day.

      Jetlag

      December 18, 2016 in the Netherlands ⋅ 🌫 5 °C

Well its 5.30 in the morning and we are up having a coffee.
After a 5hr car trip from Whyalla to Adelaide (for Debbie a 45min plane trip, I think I had the better deal working and then flying) 13hr flight from Adelaide to Dubai 3hr stopover and lastly 7hr flight from Dubai to Amsterdam.
We went through customs very quickly all bags arrive with us which is always a good feeling. Easily bought our metro pass and found the train into Amsterdam Central. Always a interesting ride on trains and trams with your luggage.
After a few extra steps we found our apartment and had a warm welcome from Paul our host. He took one look at us and thought he had better turn the heating down. Only people walking around with t-shirts! When he left we turn the heating off.
We did rug up to go looking for a supermarket.
If we survive Amsterdam it may be a miracle, I'm sure it will be death by a cyclist or dodging one.
Really didn't find what we were looking for but picked some essentials from an organic supermarket. I did see a lot of street vendors selling ollie bollies as we call them in Whyalla. So will have to try them and see how Whyalla's compares.
Tea wasn't much success so it was showers and into bed by 7.30pm.
We are just waiting for the rest of Amsterdam to wake up and go and explore.
If all else fails we have one of Amsterdam famous coffee shops across the road if we need to chill out. Which reminds me Kellie got her first wiff of cannabis walking the streets last night.
Photo of view from our apartment window.

      Amsterdami hotell ja rattad

      July 16, 2019 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Jõudsime kohale Amsterdami hotelli üsna südalinnas. Saime toa 11. korrusele, mis on selle maja viimane korrus. Aknast on vaade linnale väga väga hea - miski ei jää ette. Ma pole kunagi olnud hotellis, kus oleks nõnda hea kiirusega internet. Juba all fuajees laua taga oli näha mitmeid programmeerijaid tööd tegemas. Amsterdamis on üldse palju tarkvaraarendus ettevõtteid.

      April 23 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Die Reservierung stellt sich als gute Idee heraus, das Lokal ist gut besucht. Sowohl Mixplatte als auch Fish and Chips und die Rippchen sind absolut lecker und wir genießen das Ambiente.
