Heliflug auf den Franz Josef Gletscher

      March 1 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Franz Josef

      February 16 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Greymouth to Franz Josef in the Rain!

      March 3, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Today was only supposed to be a 2 1/2 hour drive but of course it took about double the time. The downpour that we went through made things a little more difficult on the windy sections through the mountains. Signs warned us of flooding and we could see evidence of earlier ‘slips’, landslides. Waterfalls fell from the cliffs.

On December 8, 2019, we had read that nearly 1,000 tourists were stranded in Franz Josef after stormy weekend weather triggered landslides and flooding along the town's main road. Since there is only 1 road going to the town, some people opted to pay for a helicopter or plane to fly them out. I think that the biggest problem had to do wth getting supplies into the town.

Then a few weeks ago, we read this, “New Zealand's Southland region declared a state of emergency Wednesday after severe flooding forced thousands of residents to flee their homes and left hundreds of tourists stranded at the popular Milford Sound and Franz Josef tourist spots.
The South Island was bombarded with more than 1,000 mm (39 inches) of rainfall in only 60 hours, prompting landslides on major roads and causing rivers to overflow.

Earlier on Wednesday, local authorities warned residents in the low-lying towns of Gore, Mataura and Wyndham to evacuate immediately and head to higher ground as the Mataura river showed signs of bursting. Residents were told to take with them clothing, medication and identification documents. “

So, today we left Greymouth that was definitely grey and rainy and headed south where it became very rainy by lunchtime. We stopped in at a little picnic spot with shelters on on a lake and made sandwiches. But then the rain really started!

We stopped for a coffee in a lovely town called Hokitika and wished that we had stayed there rather than Greytown. I will write a separate footprint for that visit as the town was quite interesting.

A week ago, we met an interesting man from Texas in the hostel we were staying in in Wellington. He was cycling from the top of New Zealand to the bottom, about 100 km a day. I think that he called it cycle packing. Well, wouldn’t you know it, he pulled into the same sheltered area as we did and we had a nice little reunion, comparing trips. How random.

Anyways, the drive was interesting splashing through big puddles on the road, and avoiding mini waterfalls falling down the mountain side and looking at the beautiful wet countryside with many remnants of its old wooden train trestles and tracks and tropical forests.

We arrived in Franz Josef at 2:30 pm and we are spending a little time getting caught up on the footprints.

      The West Coast

      February 25, 2018 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Read more

      Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand

      March 10, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We stayed two nights in Franz Josef, a village with a population of 444, but with over 2000 rooms for accommodating tourists who come here to see the glacier. The town is within the Westland Tai Poutini National Park. The helicopter airport is busy all day taking tourists over & actually landing on the glacier. We couldn’t see spending $300+ each to get out and walk on something we wanted to avoid walking on at home.... We did walk close to the terminal end of the glacier, however, & were struck by how much it has retreated since the first photos were taken in 1867. After hiking, we spent some time at a place called Glacier Hot Pools, which has 3 large outdoor pools. The coolest is heated to 36, the middle to 38, & the hottest to 40 degrees Celsius. That was a nice treat for our sore, hiking muscles. We ate dinner at Alice May Restaurant, which has an interesting back story.Read more

      Franz Josef Glacier

      December 12, 2018 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

      Clear skies for the glacier

      May 17, 2016 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

The sun came out finally the next day. Annie even said we may see some snow on the peaks. It was 4C there and you know it was colder up top. When we had arrived the rental agent had said there was no snow and we would probably not see any.

We were not disappointed. All along the west coast is a range of mountains that jump up dramatically from the ocean. We drove down to our next town 2 hours away admiring the snow covered peaks.

We drove right to Franz Josef Glacier and was lucky enough for clear skies. We had our picnic lunch and then did the 45 minute walk to the glacier. On our way, who do we meet but the couple that we had kayaked with in Abel Tasman. Small world!

They stop you quite far from the start of the glacier for safety reasons. We then jumped a fence (like everyone else) and climbed up to chill and get a better view. We broke out our mini wines and took in the view with a great Marlborough Pinot!

We head back to our Airbnb and after a little confusion found our cottage. Really nice, on a farm right next to a paddock with miniature horses and a view of the mountains. Unfortunately at this point the clouds had moved in and we couldn't see much.

After setting in we went into town for a drink, home for dinner and another successful day in NZ.

      Franz Josef

      July 9, 2019 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

      Franz Josef Glacier

      November 3, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    • Day 282

      Franz Josef

      April 24, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Franz Josef is a really small town that is famous for its glacier, hence the name.
Since we didn't want to spend $500 on a helicopter flight up to the glacier we decided on just going for a walk along the bottom of the glacier. 💕
It was rather cold in the morning but it actually got quite hot with the sun later on. The glacier walk took us about two hours and we walked through a bit of rainforest followed by a path through a mostly dry river bed. We came across some beautiful waterfalls and took heaps of pictures of the glacier from all different angles. 💕
At the end of the walk we were quite close to the glacier and we could see the different colours of the ice.
Because we still had time and motivation left we went on another walk called the "Callery Gorge Walk". It was a rainforest walk and in my opinion it looked like the "Forbidden Forest" from Hogwarts. It really was magical and I think in the whole time we've spent ther we saw about four people. We also found some great opportunities for a photoshoot which sometimes involved a bit of climbing. 💕
It was the last night of our tour that day so we got picked up by a limousine and were driven to a bar (200m) where we had dinner before we went to bed with lots of new memories we had made that day. 💕
