      A Little Spot of Heaven

      Arrive a little bit later than I had anticipated but today walk was definitely of two parts first along shore pleasant cool comfortable with lots of chats second heavy going through cobbled by-roads and sandy treks with sun starting to bear down, few time thought I was really lost but eventually turned up at this spot beautiful.       Sehr gut geschlafen, dann Fenster blieb offen und es hat die ganze Nacht geregnet. Morgens nur noch ein bisschen Nieseln, so dass die Regenjacke eigentlich schon zuviel war. Der Weg war etwas abenteuerlich, da wir mindestens 2 x von der Route abgewichen sind, um an "der Küste zu bleiben" .... Inklusive Kletterpartien in den Dünen mit bester Aussicht.
      Mittags viel zu früh im Pilgerparadies angekommen. Wir wurden sehr freundlich empfangen, der Pool wurde für uns geöffnet, Waschmaschine (!) läuft. Ein Fingerhut voll von dem wunderbaren Rotwein, den wir gefunden haben..... Das Leben kann so nett sein!
      Wir werden gleich noch einkaufen und ich koche uns wieder irgendwas.

      Porto to Esposende

      Right now I feel like a king leaning back into my recliner at the pool. But the day wasn't like that.

      I'm glad for the great lodging suggestion from Melanie who I met on the bus to Porto. 5 stars indeed.

      The Porto hostel was not a pilgrim hostel. Two to a bunk room we did our share of snoring deep and loud. Real man stuff. But this morning I woke to find my one bunk mate to be a woman and the song by Lou Reed - A Walk on the Wild Side - started playing in my head.

      I don't feel a thing about last night's late sortie on the city. The cup of coffee supplied by the hostel does wonders. I ride out without consulting any kind of map, as usual I let things unfold organically and I end up on the wrong side of town. I see a real day to day Sunday morning in Porto. Eventually I find myself on the Pedestrian bridge with the incredible views of the city. It's impressive and there is just a regular handrail which makes it truly airy.

      Pilgrims abound even as they blend into the tourists. I have a few short conversations but nothing serious. They walk, I ride so we can't stay connected. The summer weather and the vibe is comfortable.

      At the market on the way out, a piece of cheese got my goat and I had to return to get a second piece.

      The light house on the corner at the estuary gets hammered by the swell of an open ocean. It's a spectacle that receives the attention of thousands of hours of video daily. I bet it's all over YouTube.

      The vibe is not pilgrimage as I ride solo, it's really more of a gentle ride along a touristy beach and I feel like laying on the sand and get a tan. But I ride on and I get tired, the lack of sleep requires another shot of caffeine and I make my reservation to the albergue about 30km away. I think I can make it, but to be safe I take the busy rodeway. I managed to hammer it out but I had some doubts whether I would make it.

      It's a strange start for a Camino considering the absolute magic I experienced on the Frances. But I do hear great stories from the walking pilgrims, so I'll chalk it up to the bike mode. This one is much better to walk then bike.      Read more

      Fão nach Viana do Castelo 33,5km

      Um 7 Uhr gab es erst mal ein Kaffee im Hostel. Dann machte ich mich wieder auf den Weg. Eine halbe Stunde nach dem ich los gelaufen bin fängt es an zu regnen. Also mach ich in einem Café kurz halt und trink in Ruhe eine Espresso. Diesmal ging die Beschilderung nicht direkt an der Küste entlang. Zwar sind die Wege schön, aber ich will das Meer sehen. Nachdem ich die Karte geprüft habe, entschied ich meinen eigenen Weg zu gehen. Dies führte mich allerdings irgendwann auf ein Feld, wo mir freundliche Bäuerinnen den Weg zeigten. Später landete ich dann irgendwann mitten am Strand wo es nicht weiter ging. Barfuß ohne Rucksack sicherlich ein toller Weg. Aber so ging es nicht weiter. Google zeigte mir zwar ein Dorf. Menschen oder ein Café gab es da leider nicht. Völlig verzweifelt und ohne Wasser begegnete mir dann doch ein hilfsbereiter Bauarbeiter der mich zurück in die Zivilisation an eine Bushaltestelle fuhr. Somit ging es mit dem Bus 16 km in die nächste Stadt. Da ich nach stundenlangen umherlaufen keine Lust mehr hatte ein Hostel zu suchen, gab es das nächst gelegene Hotel. Ich war enttäuscht von mir selbst. Schaff ich es bis nach Santiago, wenn ich mich am dritten Tag schon verlaufe und den Bus nehmen muss?
      Am Abend schau ich mir die Stadt an und beobachte bei einem Käsesandwich und einem Glas Wein die Menschen.      Read more

      From Fao to Castelo do Neiva

      A great 10km this morning walking from Fao towards Casa do Afonso. A slow start as I developed some horrible blisters but a great pharmacist in a village was a huge help and we are back on the road.

      Von Fao nach Viana do Castelo

      Der Wanderer, der mit uns im Hotel abgestiegen ist, heißt Peer, kommt aus Zürich und ist - im Gegensatz zu uns - ernsthaft als Pilger unterwegs, wie er uns beim Abendessen erzählt. Das heißt: keine Abkürzungen, kein Bus oder Taxi, die gesamte Strecke muss zu Fuß bewältigt werden. Am ersten Tag ist er folglich - anders als wir - von der Kathedrale in Porto aus gestartet und hatte somit Abends 40km auf der Uhr - wow.

      Heute regnet es Katzen und Hunde, daher kürzen wir - so viel zu unserer Pilgerehre - die geplante 30km kurzer Hand mit dem Taxi ab. Gute Entscheidung, denn der Taxifahrer kennt den besten Einstieg - die Kirche São Tiago. Er weiß auch, das uns der Weg, hätten wir die Tour ab dem Hotel begonnen, über die alte Steinbrücke des Flüsschens Neiva geführt hätte. Diese hätten wir wohl nicht passieren können, da der Fluss die Brücke überschwemmt hat - nicht nur abgekürzt, sondern auch noch einen ordentlichen Umweg gespart - passt also 😊.
      Von der Kirche aus geht es durch matschige Wälder und kleine Dörfer und immer, wenn uns ein paar durchnässte Wanderer begegnen, freuen wir uns über unsere praktischen kleinen Schirme 😊. In Viana do Castelo angekommen, haben wir noch Zeit und Lust, die Kirche Santa Luzia aufm Berg anzuschauen, denn es gibt einen Aufzug,…. Aussicht gibt es null, auch die bestimmt beeindruckende Kirche verschwindet im Nebel, aber drinnen isses ja auch schön….      Read more

      Eine Nacht voller Erlebnisse! Haben ein Einzelzimmer mit eigenem Badezimmer zum Schnäppchenpreis bekommen. Allerdings 😱😃 ohne Licht und warmes Wasser. Dennoch ausgeruht und mit richtig Muskelkater ging es weiter, vorbei an riesige Gemüseplantagen 🌶 🍅

      Day trip within Esposende to the beautiful empty beach of Praia de Ofir in the natural park here….

      A lovely big sand bank where on the one side you can jump in and be tossed around by the Atlantic, and the other, where you can sit with the fishermen as they do their magic at the mouth of the Cavado river!

      A wooden boardwalk leads you back in through the dunes and sand flowers…and one can gawk at a few lucky souls who have houses here (future goals!)

      A sure spot to have some peace on the beach in summer as it seems the majority of people don’t stray out too far from main entry to the beaches in Portugal. A win for us wandering few…
