      Wir sind am Nachmittag nach Lagos gefahren und haben uns die Stadt bei Nacht angeschaut.

      Die restliche Nacht haben wir dann auf einem Parkplatz in der Stadt verbracht. War etwas unromantisch, aber ok.Read more

      Ein unschöner Surftag in Zavial

      Heute hat sich Zavial von der Seite gezeigt, wie ich es kenne. Nur close outs und manchmal Monstersets. Total schwierig und für mich völlig unmöglich zu surfen. Trotzdem konnte ich irgendwie vier schlechte Wellen halbwegs nehmen.
      Am Nachmittag sind wir dann nach Porto de Mos gefahren, wo es ganz winzig war. Ein Longboarder hat aus keinen Wellen trotzdem etwas gemacht, aber eigentlich gab es da gar nichts. Morgen gibt es einen Riesen NW-Swell, also wird die ganze Westküste viel zu groß sein. Hoffentlich dann gut für Porto de Mos oder Praia da Luz.      Read more

      Day 4

      Der perfekte Geburtstag

      Schöner kann man einen Geburtstag kaum beginnen. Wir sind bei Sonnenaufgang nach Zavial gefahren, das Licht war superschön und der Spot auch noch relativ leer. Eigentlich mag ich Zavial nicht so, weil die Welle sich plötzlich ganz schnell aufbaut und dann überall gleichzeitig bricht. Fast nur close outs. Aber es war so klein, dass es ganz lustig war. Danach saßen wir ein bisschen auf den Felsen rum, da hat man einen tollen Blick aufs Meer und rechts an den Felsen läuft auch eine Welle, die wohl eher bei low tide gut läuft und diejenigen da surfen, die es wirklich können. Da macht es Spaß zuzugucken. Wir sind dann zum Gucken auch in Beliche vorbeigefahren, die Welle soll angeblich sehr krass und schnell sein, ich kannte den Spot nur von letztem Jahr, als es fast flach war. Am Nachmittag waren wir dann auch nochmal in Zavial drin, hatten ständig irgendwelche Lachflashs und einen Ohrwurm von 50 CentRead more

      Day 3

      Praia da Ponta Ruiva

      Heute sind wir das erste Mal am Praia da Ponta Ruiva. Es war vom Swell etwas kleiner angesagt als gestern und windiger, aber es war erstaunlich windstill am Spot. Wir sind bei mid to low tide rein, am Pointbreak links waren nur noch zwei weitere Deutsche mit Shortboards. Man muss da richtig nah am Peak sitzen, sonst rollt die Welle an einem vorbei. Bei low tide waren wir dann draußen, da kam dann die Männergruppe aus Bochum/Düsseldorf, die sind da quasi alleine ins Wasser gegangen, aber eigentlich lief es gar nicht mehr so gut. In Arrifana sind wir dann noch gucken gefahren, was ganz schön viel Rumgurkerei bedeutet, weil man einmal auf nerviger Schotterpiste fährt und fast eine Stunde hochfährt. Da sah es auch eher mäßig aus, so dass wir dann doch am Nachmittag nochmal in Ponta Ruiva drin waren. Mal einen neuen Spot kennengelernt.Read more

      Day 6

      Kleine Wellen in Porto de Mos

      November 5, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      Nachdem wir gestern früh in Zavial und Ingrina nebenan gucken waren und es viel zu groß wsr, waren wir bei Praia da Luz, wo es flat war. Verrückt. Ich hatte gehofft, es läuft was Kleines. In Porto de Mos waren wir dann am frühen Nachmittag drin, ablaufend gegen Mid tide. Es waren 1000 Surfschulen und 30 Surfer am Peak rechts bei Reef, alle gefühlt mit Longboards, die dann alles abgegriffen haben. Morgen wird es sogar noch kleiner, da versuchen wir mal bei low to mid tide zu gehen, bei high tide stirbt die Welle ab.
      Habe mir vorsorglich ein 8ft Brett geholt, mal sehen, wie es damit morgen läuft.      Read more

      Day 2

      Arrifana und Zavial

      November 1, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

      Low tide gegen 11 Uhr. Gestern war es in Porto de Mos schon sehr klein, heute morgen dann, wie auch vom Forecast angekündigt, noch kleiner. Ich bin dann schnell nach Arrifana hochgefahren, da war es ganz ok, klein, aber mit ablaufender Tide etwas close outig. Ich konnte auch nur bis 11 Uhr im Wassef bleiben, danach habe ich Philipp abgeholt. Wir sind dann nach kurzem Zwischenstopp im Hostel direkt nach Porto de Mos gucken gefahren, aber es war echt ziemlich winzig, so dass wir dann doch entschieden haben, nach Zavial zu fahren. Zavial mag ich eigentlich nicht so, weil es windanfällig ist und oft close outs hat. Aber mit auflaufender Tide, also mid to high und high tide läuft es eigentlich ganz ok.
      Ne Männergruppe aus Bochum/Düsseldorf, die ich heute morgen in Porto de Mos getroffen habe, war statt in Arrifana heute dann in Ponta Ruiva. Die meinten, das war ganz gut. Vielleicht testen wir das morgen mal aus...      Read more

      Day 11

      Sunrise surf

      Sunrise surf in Porto de Mos. Wir waren um 7 Uhr da und es war einer im Wasser. Es war fast flat, aber da wir schonmal da waren, sind wir auch reingegangen. Die Atmosphäre bei Sonnenaufgang, keinem Wind und ruhiger Wasseroberfläche ist so schön. Es kamen dann noch eine Longboarderin, eine weitere Surferin und ein Longboarder dazu, so dass wir heute morgen nur zu fünft waren. Es waren winzige Wellen und um 7 Uhr auch schon mid tide, auflaufend. Mit dem 8ft Brett ist es echt ein Traum anzupaddeln und die Welle zu nehmen. Man kann echt lange fahren und auch wieder in die Welle kommen. Ich muss nur noch schneller einlenken, um an der oberen Hälfte die Welle abzusurfen anstatt erst runterzufahren und dann gar keinen Speed mehr zu haben. Der swell geht sogar noch zurück und es wird noch kleiner, hoffentlich geht trotzdem noch eine Nachmittagssession.Read more

      Boardwalk Beach

      The journal logs for Lagos will appear to be quite uneventful as it is generally just drinking, waking up hungover, and spending the day at the beach. Even if you aren't hungover, you still just spend the day at the beach. It is very relaxing and a lot of fun, but I have had people tell me that Lagos was their favourite place and I'm not sure I fully understand that. Although it's cool to chill with people from all over the world and drink and have fun, everything you can do in Lagos, you can do in Aus. I would rather have some things to go and do and see during the day, even if I'm hungover. Either way, I needed a bit of a recharge, so I arrived at Lagos at a good time and really did enjoy my stay. I just don't think I could say it is one of my favourite places simply because the location itself doesn't have much in particular. I'm travelling to see the world, not to drink and sit at the beach, though I am glad to have done plenty of both.

      Today, Nina and I began the walk to the same Western beach we went to yesterday but continued a bit further to a beach around the point. It was a great walk, and I'm not sure why we didn't just do it yesterday, but we didn't realise how nice it would be. Around the point, you walked along a boarwalk, which was amazing. The rock formations that existed along the cliff faces made it really cool. The beach was also really nice too, surrounded by 2 enourmas cliffs, you walk between a valley to find your spot on the beach. Although beautiful, there were thousands of these little bugs, like fruit flies. They would harass you and jump all over you and make you itchy and ticklish. To avoid them, we had to find somewhere on the rocks to chill, and it did work. Although less comfortable, it was worth it to escape the bugs. We chilled here quite literally all afternoon before going back and starting to drink again. This night was not as big as Saturday, but it was still a lot of fun. We chilled at the hostel for a bit before I left to catch the kiwis at the pub watching the soccer. When that finished, I had another drink, and I headed back to the hostel. Once I rejoined everyone, we had a few more drinks, and at about midnight, we made tracks toward the club. We went to the same pub as Saturday but it was nowhere near as good. We played a couple of games of pool before trying to find a better club. Although no such luck, we found a rooftop bar where we could sit and chat for a good little while. Eventually, though, we went back to the hostel at about 3:30am. This was another fun night but didn't quite compare to Saturday. Saturday had a really good group of people, and the clubs were all far busier. Either way, it was good and a nice way to say goodbye to Lagos.      Read more

      After a good amount of time and fun in Spain, it was time to move onto Portugal. I have 6 days until my flight out of Porto, and i am spending about 3 days in Lagos, 2 in Lisbon, and one in Porto before my flight leaves. I would love to have spent more time here as I have heard great things about Portugal but I'm going to have to fill my days with walking and site seeing to make up for a shorter stint in each location. After an early wake-up and a coffee, I jumped on the bus and began the 5-hour trip. Upon my arrival, the sim card that I had decided to buy to get me through the last couple weeks of my trip decided to shit itself. This left me with no idea how to get to my hostel. After wandering and eventually finding some free wifi, I made my way to the hostel to check in. As I checked in, I met a girl from Hobart, quite a rarity in Europe, and essentially ended up following her everywhere around Lagos. She was cool and had a functional phone, so this way, I wouldn't get lost. We went for a hunt for some food and eventually found somewhere with cheap pizza and went and ate it along the river walk. After this, we quickly popped in to see what the beaches had on offer close to the hostel, and they were quite pretty. I was excited to have time to go tomorrow, but it was already afternoon, and it was actually quite cold, so we figured we'd head back to the hostel. The hostel was great and very social, I met lots of people from all over the world (although still mostly Australians), and we chatted for hours with each other in the common room. Although the original plan was to not go out, our arms turned to rubber at about 10 o'clock. Despite being late for me, in Portugal, people don't go out until 12 at the earliest, so we still had time to drink and head out. Although I'm not normally a drinker of spirits, the time restrictions and cheap prices encouraged me to choose vodka as my drink for the night. After quite a few shots, we hit the town and had a great night. There was a group of Kiwi guys that we met, and they were a lot of fun to hang out with.Read more

      Lagos

      Nach der Vertreibung der Mauren entwickelte sich die Stadt ab Mitte des 13. Jh. zu einem wichtigen Hafen und Werftplatz. Hier wurden die schnellen Karawellen gebaut, auf denen ihre Kapitäne die Weltmeere befuhren und die Eroberer brachten Reichtum und Ansehen über die Stadt. Nach dem Erdbeben versank die Stadt zur Bedeutungslosigkeit. Erst durch den Tourismus in den 1970er Jahren blühte sie erneut auf.
      Heute ist die Stadt, mit ihren vielen schmalen Gassen, ein wunderschöner Treffpunkt und Touristenort.
      Das düstere Kapitel der Stadt ist, dass 1444 erstmals die Versteigerung von schwarzafrikanischen Sklaven stattfand und der europäische Sklavenhandel somit begann.      Read more
