Day 3 - Rates to Barcelos

      April 11 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Today went fairly well, although my sciatic pain went a little haywire and has me concerned. My pack feels so heavy! I think it has aggravated that nerve, and today it had me stopping every few hundred yards or so just to manage the pain. Ugh. Might have to consider bag transport.

The walk was fairly scenic today, still with a lot of roadway with little to no shoulder. We hopscotched three Germans for a while. The going looked tough for them too. Cobblestones and pavement are damn hard on the feet. I didn’t expect t it, and frankly am not thrilled with the terrain, although I’ve heard tomorrow should be much better.

Honest confession: the pilgrim experience so far has been vastly different from doing the Norte in 2018. I haven’t found the pilgrims as friendly and haven’t yet connected with anyone beyond hello. We did meet a nice couple from Brisbane, Australia and a friendly man from Ireland last night at the albergue. Briefly spoke to a chatty couple from Ireland as we left the restaurant tonight. But no close connection yet like Kate and I experienced last time. But hey, we’re only three days in!

The best part about today has been splurging for a hotel room 😁😁! So luxurious to have a nice shower, comfy bed, air conditioning, and privacy. And we had the laundry service wash and dry our dirty clothes. They were returned nicely folded and smelling wonderful. I can’t explain the joy!

      Barcelos!

      June 25, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Thankfully, we’ve arrived in Barcelos much earlier than our other stays! Beat the heat a bit better! Only thing is that our check-in at the hostel is not until 3pm. So, poor us, we have to wait and have lunch in this perfect picturesque square with covered seating and a fountain flowing in the background! We met up with our Irish friend, McDara, who we first saw in Porto! We are all enjoying rest time until check-in!Read more

      Etappe 19

      May 28, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

So herzig....
Was will man mehr.....

      Camino, day 457

      September 19, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 72 °F

Don’t freak out. I know it’s really only day 2. But what a day! We walked awhile, then walked some more. To keep things exciting, we kept right on walking until we couldn’t walk any farther. But we did walk farther. I hate to brag but you’re probably going to see us on the cover of Walker’s World soon. And you know what? We’re thinking about going for another walk tomorrow. We’re that good.

And the laundry! You thought your mom was good at laundry? Think again. (Unless your name is Henry, Steven, or Andy, in which case you’ve probably already figured out that we *are* your moms which makes this particular paragraph rather reflexive, grammatically speaking. Just ignore it.)

Anyhoo, today we walked from Rates to Barcelos. If you look at a map it probably looks like they’re very close together but they’re not. This section was a good mix of dirt paths and cobblestone roads. Very scenic. Vineyards, corn fields, and woods between cute little towns.

Today was a bit cooler than yesterday, maybe 80-85°. We even had about 5 minutes of light rain, lasting just long enough for us to deploy our rain gear before it stopped.

We somehow missed lunch today which was probably a mistake. Personally, I can go for days without eating but Ellen was such a baby about it I had to promise to let her eat again tomorrow to get her to stop crying.

We walked with a group of 5 Americans for a bit early in the day. They caught up to us again just as we crossed the Cavado river entering Barcelos. Saw one of our german friends from dinner last night as we were having dinner (again!) tonight. Many more people of various nationalities zipped past us on the Camino today, a nice change from yesterday. Sounds like lodging options are a bit scarce so I’m glad we booked ahead.

      It’s 8:15. Time for bed. Night y’all.

      Fiesta

None of this is looking good for any sleep tonight. The gaudy decorations are going up and now they are breaking out the accordions...
