    Barcelos

    September 6 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

    Barcelos really likes its roosters! The Rooster of Barcelos is an icon of Portugal. Here is the legend;

    "Legend has it that at the beginning of the sixteenth century a crime had occurred in the small town of Barcelos. However, nothing was known about the culprit, which alarmed the population of Barcelos. By that time, a Galician passed in the city, which raised numerous suspicions. No one knew the stranger and no one had never seen him before. So much was the suspicion that in his defense the Galician said that he was only passing through Barcelos on his pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Ignoring his justifications, the man was immediately charged with the crime and sent to the gallows.

    On the day of the trial, and in the presence of the judge and the entire population of Barcelos, the devout pilgrim said aloud: "It is as certain that I am innocent, as it is certain that this rooster crows when I am hanged." Among laughter, the people looked around and saw a roast rooster on a platter, already served for the meal that followed. Without any explanation, at the very moment when the Galician was being hanged, the rooster came back to life and everywhere the strong singing of the animal was heard. Soon the judge ordered to save the life of the Galician and let him continue his way. The Rooster of Barcelos gained such fame that it became one of the most representative figures of Portugal."

    Pedra Furada

    September 10, 2017 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

    More narrow streets and cobblestones today. The weather has been perfect with cool evenings and mornings and very warm afternoons. A band was playing in front of this church about 8:00 this morning with 3 to 5 minutes of loud fireworks then the hurriedly got in a van and were gone. I have no idea why. I came across a facade that looked like a church but there is only vacant land behind it. Very strange. The goats and sheep were coming right down the Camino path the goats gave me a quizzical look but I made sure to stick with the sheep just incase they were being separated with the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left.Read more

    Barcelos

    Beautiful town and so many churches and a nice historic town center. The walk here was short distance but long on time. Dave is in pain from the muscles in his right leg near where he had his knee replaced a few years ago. I walked around town and visited some churches. The main church I visited was Igreja do Senhor Bom Jesus da Cruz (Good Jesus of the Cross) which has its own legend and also has a statue of the Pilgrim Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. This is also the town that is responsible for the Roosters in every Portuguese home.Read more

    Die Magie des Caminho ☆☆☆

    May 11, 2016 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

    Heute morgen bin ich um 8 Uhr auf den Caminho und es war ein wunderbarer Tag. Landschaftlich ein Traum. Abwechslungsreiche Wälder und Felder, kleine Dörfer und am Ende noch so früh anzukommen um in einer wunderschönen neuen Herberge für 16 Personen zu übernachten. Nach einer warmen Dusche. .. fühle ich mich auf meinen Weg angekommen. ♡♡♡ in der Magie des Caminho ! Danach hab ich mir für 5 Euro ein leckeres Pilgermenü mit einem kühlen Vino Verde gegönnt. Der Abend kann kommen ;-)Read more
