  • Gardens by the Bay#1, Singapore

    29 Agustus 2014, Singapura ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Definitely the highlight so far!! Singapore wants to be known not for the garden in the city but as the city within a garden. These gardens are truly amazing.
The Cloud Forest, with it's 35m waterfall, is filled with many exotic plants all interspersed with glorious orchids of myriad shapes and colours. This was just fantastic and well worth a visit.Baca selengkapnya

Staying at the InterContinental Hotel - a beautiful Colonial-style hotel with excellent service and amenities.
Went to the Peranakan Museum yesterday and it's well worth a visit. The Peranakan are a mix of Malay, Indian and Chinese heritage and the women were expert embroiderers. Saw an exquisite tablecloth embroidered with over one million tiny coloured beads and gold thread. The Wedding exhibit was amazing - Peranakan weddings traditionally went for 12 days and the exhibits higlight each stage of the wedding ritual. Second photo shows a typical Peranakan wedding procession with bride second on left
    next to groom.

The most striking structures in the gardens are the Supertrees - vertical plantings on enormous stylised trees throughout the gardens. Each night they are illuminated for a sound and light show. There's also a Children's Garden and on this visit there were many brightly-coloured characters all over the gardens, including a display with the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House and kangaroos! You never quite knew what would be around the next corner.Baca selengkapnya

Last day here. Opted for late checkout due to late flight so weve just been taking it easy and looking around. Walked to Arab Street for some more silk and on the way we came across the magnificent Frank Lloyd Wright-style Parkview Square building. It's enormous and absolutely stunning - copper statues of world leaders, musicians, writers (incl Lincoln, Churchill, Sun Yat Sen, Chopin, Dante) stand over waterfalls and the building is made of marble and granite. Saw the Sultan Mosque near Arab Street - looks imposing in amongst the shops and shophouses.
Our last hurrah and ttreat to ourselves was high tea in the lobby lounge of the hotel - the tiramisu and panna cotta were to die for and everything else was almost as good!! Thanks for a great experience InterContinental Hotel.

  • Dubai

    30 Agustus 2014, Uni Emirat Arab ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Waiting to leave Dubai Airport after the circus of arriving last night having spent 35 minutes in a holding pattern over Dubai, catching a bus to the terminal from the furthest bay and trying to find the hotel in the airport!! Finally found it, had a swim and Ron went to bed to try to sleep. Still a worthwhile exercise as we both felt quite refreshed despite not sleeping much. This morning we had to catch the train to Terminal A and go through yet another security check before boarding. Security is tight for those travelling from Dubai to the United States. Sadly most of the security staff don't seem to believe in service with a smile - or anything with a smile for that matter!!Baca selengkapnya

Finally landed in the United States and boy are we glad to be back here!! (Particularly glad to be here safe and sound, having seen on the news on the plane that Iceland had declared a red alert for the volcano there and we then proceeded to fly directly over Iceland according to the route shown on the plane!!). It's been four years and thats too long between visits. After waiting for about 40 minutes in the immigration line along with hundreds of others we cleared customs and got the shuttle to Embassy Suites at the airport. Fairly basic hotel (but with Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries!) but its close to the subway, airport and rental cars. We return here from NYC in a few weeks but there's lots of fun to be had before then!! Can't wait to get to Bardstown tomorrow to see the Pointers again and enjoy a QLD or two on the deck and enjoy the view of the woods and birds. Hoping to see lots of beautiful cardinals while we're there.Baca selengkapnya

  • Bardstown, Kentucky

    1 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Feels like 'coming home', the trees have all grown and seem more dense than four years ago and everywhere is so green. Went for a walk along Froman Greenwell Road, fed the miniature donkeys along the way and generally soaked up the warmth. Quite humid and became a little overcast towards evening. Discovered both our cases had been opened and checked by TSA. Thankfully the timber we brought for Norman was still there. No wonder we were told to "proceed" straight through customs because they already knew what was in our cases!!!

Our living quarters while wer'e here at Camp Kentucky!
Its off to Boone in North Carolina tomorrow for four days.

  • Boone, North Carolina #1

    2 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

About a six hour drive to Rachel & Marc's holiday cabin in the mountains in Boone. The house is rustic on the outside but very comfortable inside and the view across the mountains was beautiful. Boone is a college/skiing/tourist town and was very, very busy with lots of traffic and people moving about. It's O week with students everywhere!
Some views outside the cabin and sunset from the back porch.

More photos of the Umlas's cabin. Three levels, four bedrooms and bathrooms, living area, kitchen, laundry downstairs. Boone is popular with the well-heeled and has lots of lovely boutique-style stores as well as bars and cafes that cater more to uni students. Its quite an eclectic and vibrant mix! It is much larger than we expected and the volume of traffic was what you would expect in a larger city.Baca selengkapnya

  • Moses H Cone House, Boone

    4 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Yesterday we stopped off at the house of Moses Cone, who had made money from textiles and from developing 25 miles of carriage roads. It's now an Art & Craft/information centre in the beautiful old house and the carriage house contains the restrooms. We walked to the family cemetery -
The most beautiful walk through shade from lovely old trees and everywhere was green. It must have been a very long walk to take the coffin on the carriage to the cemetery- we walked about two miles there and back and we were wearing shorts and t-shirts, not dressed in the heavy black clothes of the early days.

  • Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina

    4 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Travelled along the Blue Ridge stopping for photos at several overlooks (lookouts). Its almost beyond comprehension to understand how Daniel Boone made his way through this area when it was virgin land. The colours are amazing, with the dark blue ridge and lighter blue beyond. We were blessed with glorious clear weather. The leaves on the trees are just starting to turn and every now and then you will see a few leaves that are burnished red or orange. In May the Blue Ridge is covered in flowering azaleas and rhododendrons and must look like a sea of pink and white. The rhododendron bushes were enormous, like huge trees. Went into Valle Crucis to see the original Mast General Store (opened in 1883) which has its own post office and appeared much as it must have been a hundred years ago.
Went up Grandfather Mountain, the highest peak on the Blue Ridge, and across the Swinging Bridge at the top, also known as the Singing Bridge because of the noise made by the wind as it whistles through the metal. I couldnt walk to the top of the highest rock - too high and too unsteady on my feet!

  • Blue Ridge Music Centre#1, Virginia

    5 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Drove along the Blue Ridge, stopping at Galax in Tennessee for lunch. Awesome scenery and a beautiful drive through the trees but rhododendrons not yet in bloom. The Blue Ridge looks stunning from almost every angle and there are plenty of places to stop to appreciate it. We stopped at a reconstruction of a tiny hut and Baptist Church which was used by travelling preachers. These are maintained by the National Parks service and are always in immaculate condition and never vandalised in any way.Baca selengkapnya

  • Blue Ridge Music Centre#2, Virginia

    5 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

The Centre is in a National Park and managed cooperatively by the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. Every day between 10 and 4 music is played by volunteers in the breezeway outside the entrance to the Museum. One of the musicians told us he knew two Australian songs, one of which was The Band played Waltzing Matilda. The music was great - mountain music with banjos, fiddles, guitars etc. As we were leaving the guy wanted to play And the Band played Waltzing Matilda for us so we stayed to listen. As he got near the end he said he wasnt sure he could finish and by the time he did he was almost in tears. It was very moving and we felt very privileged to be there.Baca selengkapnya

  • Linville Falls, North Carolina

    5 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Stopped off in Boone to look around the stores on the way to Linville Falls. Much less traffic than the other day. The weather was beautiful - we have been so lucky with great weather thus far. Had lunch before walking to the Falls - about an hour's walk. Started raining and a heavy storm arrived after dinner.Baca selengkapnya

  • Cumberland Gap, Kentucky

    7 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Stopped for lunch in the picnic area here - very beautiful at this time of year. Watched a short movie about Daniel Boone blazing a trail through the Gap and another about the Gap
itself. The conditions were extremely tough for those early trail blazers, especially in winter. When you see the countryside itself it's almost impossible to imagine how families, especially women with babies, survived the journey. Didnt see any bears apart from the one in the visitors centre. On the way home we got caught in a storm and I don't know how Sue drove through it. You couldnt see any distance in front of the car and then the lightning started - very scary! But we made it home and its good to be back in Bardstown.Baca selengkapnya

  • Louisville, Kentucky

    7 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Went to lunch at a quirky restaurant called Hillbilly Tea. The plates were round timber logs, the napkins were dishcloths fastened with wooden pegs, the menus were printed on calico, the wine and water glasses were mason jars of varying sizes and each table had a small medicine bottle with one tiny flower in it!! The food was a bit different but very good, especially the beet fritters.
After lunch we went to see the comedic Love's Labours Lost at Actors Theatre. We've seen some excellent productions there over the years we've been coming here and this was no exception. It had references to many other of Shakespeare's plays, which made for some hilarious moments. The props and costumes were very minimalist but the acting was superb.
Before lunch we did some grocery shopping at Trader Joe's - a large American chain. Nearly died at the price of bananas!!
Had fresh corn for dinner - I was in heaven!!

  • Versailles, Kentucky

    9 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Drove along the Bluegrass Parkway to Versailles (pronounced Versails) to Irish Acres antique store and The Glitz restaurant. There were over 50 rooms in the antique store - it had everything imaginable in it, including two Persian rugs for $35,000. The restaurant lived up to it's name and we had a lovely lunch there among the glitz!! There were hundreds of tiny lights thoughout the three rooms, which were all decorated in a different style.Baca selengkapnya

    10 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Travelled to John James Audubon State Park. We have a great cabin in the Park - it looks rustic but has AC and WiFi, small kitchen & dining areas, separate bathroom and bedroom - very comfortable! Went for a 3 km walk through the woods - very invigorating although I was pretty tired afterwards! Had a look in the small but interesting gift shop. Looked for bald eagles near the Ohio River but couldnt see any. Returned to our cabins and had dinner and a few glasses of wine. This is a fantastic facility in a State Park.Baca selengkapnya

  • Henderson, Kentucky #2

    11 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Went into Henderson to look at the Audubon bird sculptures around the town. Flags were flying at half mast and the lamp posts had yellow ribbons tied to them. We had lost track of the date and on asking why at the Post Office we were told it was to commemorate 9/11. Had lunch at the Golden Corral just so Norman could have fun saying we had eaten there!! It's an all-you-can-eat buffet with incredible choice and average quality food and an experience that won't be repeated! Went on to the John James Audubon Museum in the Park. They have the world's largest collection of his work and memorabilia and it's a most impressive museum, particularly as it's in a State Park and not in a big city. His work is incredibly detailed and his story one of many struggles and setbacks before finally finding success. Left the Park again and travelled just across the bridge into Indiana to Angel Mounds to see the museum and preserved mounds of the Mississippian Indians. Very interesting as they have recreated the story of this tribe from about 700 - 1400 AD purely from archaeological digs on the mounds. No other information about them remains. Another busy day packed with new discoveries.Baca selengkapnya

  • New Harmony, Indiana

    12 September 2014, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Did the guided tour of New Harmony and so glad we did as we got to see inside some buildings we would not have otherwise seen. It's a very beautiful town with some buildings from the 19th century beautifully preserved. The town was built by German religious refugees who eventually moved to Pennsylvania. The Visitors Centre is a very modern building that was built 35 years ago but still looks ahead of it's time. New Harmony is well worth a visit and we could have stayed much longer to look around but had a three hour drive home so had to leave after we had lunch. We have had the best few days in Western Kentucky and Indiana!Baca selengkapnya
