    The legendary Transfăgărășan

    August 3, 2020 in Romania ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Our strategy to leave early to avoid the traffic worked out nicely! At 5:45am, we were on the road and for the first 2 hours, we saw almost no car. It was still cold though, but as we had to climb continuously, we got warm soon. After half of the climb, we stopped for a coffee and our second breakfast before cycling the most interesting and mountainous part of the famous Transfăgărășan: 15 turns of 180 degrees winding up to an elevation of 2000m. As we started at about 500m, we had an elevation gain of 1500m which we managed in under 4 hours, mainly with strong headwinds.
It was really cold at the top and very touristy, too. By now, the car drivers had woken up as well, so we had to share the place with quite some people when we had our third breakfast at the lake.
Our plan was to stay at a hostel and go hiking tomorrow. However, when we ask for a room, they told us they were closed because of current "conditions". That's actually the first time on this trip, that we are affected by the Corona measures.
We could have stayed at a hotel or one of the campspots further down, but as it was too touristy and as we are spoilt by hiking options in the Alps, we decided to descend. The 30km downhill was very scenic and we enjoyed it a lot. The only downside was the rising amount of cars, but at least the vast majority was still coming uphill at this time.
We arrived at a lake where we could turn into a nice and quiet dirt road. Good to be away from the traffic again! The lake ends with an enormous dam, looking down was impressive. From here, we only had to cycle another 5km in order to get to a campground. Not that nice, but it had a (cold) shower and an electric fence to keep the bears outside.
We also passed some milestones. Since starting our trip in September last year, we've cycled 20.000km and climbed 200km 💪

    Not driving the Transfagarasan Road

    June 8, 2019 in Romania ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

With a shuffle to our itinerary, had a free morning today, so Gabriel suggested a drive to Lake Balea, and a chance to see the famous Tranfagarasan Road, rated by Top Gear as the best road in the world.

The road is only open a few months a year from July to October (weather dependent), so if you can't drive the road, the next best thing is to see it!

We drove from Sibiu to the base station of the cable car to take us to Lake Balea, arriving just after it opened at 9am. This was a good move, as queues later in the day were huge.

The cable car travels up the valley, over the closed section of the Transfagarasan Road, and it was easy to see why it is still closed. When we reached the top, there was still enough snow to ski on (and it had a number of hardy takers, given there are no ski lifts operating), and Lake Balea was still largely frozen over.

Vlad's real castle... just up that hill

    June 9, 2019 in Romania ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We headed south today, down the Olt River Valley Road, stopping at Cozia Monastery on the way. Being Sunday morning the church and grounds were very popular, especially as it's also a pilgrimage site for Romanians as Mircea the Elder (Vlad Tepes' grandfather) is buried there. Vlad and Mircea were both leaders of the Wallachia Region, although Vlad is now more connected to neighbouring Transylvania via the Dracula stories.

We were also scheduled to visit Vlad the Impaler's real castle (Poienari Citadel), which can only be accessed up 1480 steps through the forest, but it's currently closed due to recent bear attacks. So we just viewed it from below...

We then drove along the southern section of the Transfagarasan Road (not the famous bit) to Vidraru Dam, before heading to Curtea de Arges, the former capital of Wallachia, and visited the cathedral where the last 4 kings of Romania are buried (the last King of Romania, Michael I abdicated in 1947 when the communists took control, and died in 2017)

After a walk around town we had a farewell dinner with Gabriel before our tour ends tomorrow.

    Phänomenale Transfăgărășan

    August 26, 2019 in Romania ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

    Transfagarasan TOP

    August 26, 2019 in Romania ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

    Transfarga...was? Der geilste Pass ever

    August 26, 2019 in Romania ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Weiter so !

    Camping Arges

    July 18, 2019 in Romania ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

    August 26, 2019 in Romania ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

According to Top Gear this is the best paved road in the world. Amazing turns through a huge mountain pass in beautiful settings. We had sun and dry conditions all the way to the top, but as we went through the tunnel the sky fell down for the decent, and it rained like crazy! We totally agree with topgear. This was an amazing ride!! 🏎🐮Read more
