    Isaakskathedrale

    June 11, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    Sightseeingtour St. Petersburg

    June 25, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Heute steht Sightseeing auf dem Programm! 📍

    The Hermitage

    June 12, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

There is security at the entry to the Hermitage museum, like all museums around here. Our group of 12 doesn’t have any problems with it until the last guy, who is me. I do security all the time and generally get it right. Today I have pockets full of stuff, a communication device with an earphone, my passport holder strung underneath my jacket, and a camera in my hand. I leave the camera and walk through the metal detector. It rings, so I take out my cellphone, rings again and security Ivan suggests it’s my man purse underneath my jacket. I try to take it off but it is strung around my neck and gets caught in the earpiece I’m wearing. There is a huge line behind me and I can sense an angry mob mentality starting to grow. All the others of my group ahead are waiting and saying don’t worry, we’ve got all day. Ivan makes me move aside while others who are better prepared pass through. I wrestle with my jacket and headset and passport holder, finally getting it all piled in a heap beside the metal detector and walk through again. Beeeeep!!! I’ve taken off everything I can think of, but there is still a pen in my pocket. Out it comes and finally I pass through without alarm. My group is still saying, to take my time, but I can see they are clearly enjoying my predicament. I refill my pockets, don my jacket and headset and silently curse the pen in my pocket.Read more

    Admiralty

    October 6, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Then it was back into St Petersburg, passing one of two similar triumphal arches commemorating the victory over the French in 1812. I got dropped off at the Admiralty building. This is the centre of the city, with many Avenues, or Prospect as they call it here, radiating away from here.

A short distance down one of the prospects was St. Isaacs Cathedral. Saint Isaac's Cathedral or Isaakievskiy Sobor is a cathedral that currently functions as a museum. It is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a patron saint of Peter the Great, who had been born on the feast day of that Saint. It is the largest domed building in Russia and fourth in the world.Read more

    Palace Square

    October 8, 2019 in Russia ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

The star attraction of the square is the immense column that sits in its center. Known as the Alexander Column, it is a monument to Russia's victory over Napoleonic France. Designed, ironically, by the French-born architect Auguste de Montferrand and built between 1830 and 1834, the column stands at 47,4 meter or almost 156 feet (including the base) and is topped with an angel whose face is said to resemble that of Emperor Alexander I. The monument, considered a great feat of engineering, weighs six hundred tons. No cranes were used to place it in the square, and it has no attachment to the base other than gravity.Read more
