      To Astorga

      September 28

      Today was a good day! We started walking a bit before sunrise and the air had a perfect crispness to it. We met Roger from the UK and then ran into Candi as the sun was rising.
      The light was stunning this morning and it was hard for me to stop taking pictures/video.

      We walked the whole way to Astorga with Candi which made the miles and time fly by so fast!🙂💕 Candi was our inspiration to walk our first Camino, so this time we had to walk with her was pretty special. ❤️

      We have had the best afternoon exploring Astorga and just sitting in the plaza eating some food, watching the kids and families, enjoying some drinks and visiting. We topped off our day with a trip to a grocery store for some snacks and I was thrilled to get some chips and salsa and a bit of chocolate. My day is now complete. 😋

      Tomorrow we walk to Rabanal. We are officially done with the Meseta and are entering a greener and more hilly landscape.      Les mer

      Santibanez to Astorga 14k 4hrs

      Another tough day for me. The night before I had a cough come on and it kept me up most of the night. Of course we are in a dorm room with 10 other people so I went and sat outside for a few hours. It was actually quite peaceful under the almost full moon. But I was so tired from coughing and not sleeping. The next big village that would have medical care was 13km away. Our albergue hostess was so sweet and helpful. She called several taxi companies to pick me up and bring to Astorga. No one would do it so we walked. Luckily I wasn’t feeling too bad at that point. When we got to Astorga we got a hotel room. The concierge was also very kind and helpful. He told us how to get to the medical centre. Once there it was like a comedy show, since the receptionist did not speak English, but as always, we got it figured out. Luckily the doctor spoke decent English. He said I had a respiratory infection and prescribed some antibiotics and something to calm the cough (he also had me do a Covid test, which was negative)
      Todd is like a rock. He is feeling good and patiently looks after me. I think he could have finished this Camino and started another if he didn’t have to wait for me 🙃      Les mer

      New Scenery + Astorga

      Ahhh, a welcome change of scenery and a beautiful, sunny day to boot.

      Didn’t take a lot of pics myself because my phone is on the fritz. In fact, I’m using MB’s phone to post this and will be relying on her photos going forward. Just hoping my phone can give me five minutes a day until I land at IAD.

      I think we walked about 15 miles, mostly through gentle hills, farms and woodland. Plenty of towns to stop in en route, including Orbigo, with with “one of the longest and best preserved, medieval bridges in Spain, dating from the 13th century,” according to our guidebook.

      Staying tonight in a small city called Astorga, which boasts several churches, a cathedral and a Gaudi building known as the Bishop’s Palace, which is just beautiful--one of our favorite sites so far. Astorga is also the start of an area associated with the Maragato culture, which we will learn more about as we walk.

      Had a lovely b-day meal on the town’s main plaza with MB and Brian (Maine). Excited for the mountains tomorrow!      Les mer

      Day 30 - Astorga

      Wow, day 30 already, we have 14 more walking days until we get to Santiago de Compostela (not including our days off). Walked an easy 9 miles today, and we now have a day off tomorrow.

      Toured the Astorga Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace, designed by Antoni Gaudí today. We are probably going to the Roman museum and the chocolate museum tomorrow.Les mer

      Day 30-Astorga

      Short 9 mile walk today. We finished before noon. The hills are getting a little bigger and steeper. The thing I noticed today is that there doesn't seem to be any smog. We mostly walk in the countryside but as we approach cities, I don't see any polution. We do run into alot of flies and poop smells (cows, sheep, fertilizer, pilgrims).

      We toured the cathedral and Gaudí's bishop's palace then sat on a bench eating ice cream admiring the architecture of both.

      We had a reunion last night with a couple of people we met on day 2.

      Tomorrow we're going to the Museo de Chocolate.      Les mer

      Rest day in Astorga

      We can't move. Pat and I had Cocido Maragato (the local specialty) for lunch and we fully understand siesta time now. It's the time when your body forces you to lie down and reflect on why you felt compelled to eat so much. The meal started with bread and sliced tomatoes dressed in olive oil, salt and oregano. Followed by a pot of stewed meats big enough for four people. Then a big dish of garbanzos and stewed cabbage. Then a small pot of broth with fideos. Topped off with cake and custard, wine and water. We're in a food coma and we didn't even eat half of what was served.

      This morning we went to the chocolate museum, which was pretty interesting. They had the old equipment that was used when the production was done by hand. Of course, there were samples at the end.      Les mer

      Day 15 - Nice hike to Rabanal

      14. oktober 2023, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

      21.8 km / 13.5 mile hike today. We slept in a bit and left Astorga around 9 am as we knew it was a flat’ish, country hike today. Weather cooperated today and we soon peeled off our cool morning clothes for shorts and t’s, as the weather was high 60s and a beautiful day for a long walk.

      As always, the last 5-10km is always the hardest and we had to grind. Sun was hot and flies were thick. We kept trucking on, and passing thru a run down, one horse town, El Ganso, we noticed a street vendor (the only person we saw in the entire town). He had some interesting jewelry. Julie ended up finding two beautiful crosses.

      As per usual, we hobbled into town- Rabanel, later than all other pilgrims. But this time, we were cheered on by earlier pilgrims already showered, clean clothes on the line and out exploring the village (their journaling/reflecting was probably already done as well).

      We found the closest bar (in this town of 50 people), and they were closing for siesta (of course they were) and they were super friendly and kind and we enjoyed our much looked forward to cerveza after our long hike.

      We checked into our Albergue, which was referrred to us from another fullly booked Albergue. This lady, Susana, has not yet opened her two rooms above her small store for customers. We believe we are one of her first customers.

      We had reserved one room with a full bed and private bath. Upon arrival, the bed was very tiny with a single pillow. We decided to ask Susana, (and yes we sang Oh Susana for the last 5km), if her other room across the hall was available, and she said it was. For the very first time in over two weeks, Joan and I now have our very own rooms.

      At 7pm we attended a pilgrims mass/Liturgy of the hours, at the Benedictine Monastery in town. Hearing the mass and prayers in multiple languages is truly a transforming and spiritual experience. It was the cap to a day of the Lords presence in our lives. We saw multiple churches, and people of God that have touched us forever.

      Our dinner next to church was one of our best. Joan continues to out drink and eat me- it’s alarming. Tomorrow we climb the mountains (that we don’t know their name). And it is a long steep, 26+km / 15+ miles up and down. Wish us luck!

      Leon to Astorga

      I took the bus from Leon to Astorga. I arrived early so was able to have time to walk around.

      Saw the Gaudi Palace. It looks like a castle out of Disney.

      Sunny day. Leaving tomorrow to walk to Rabanal. I am very excited.Les mer

      Day 2: Hospital de Orbigo to Astoga

      Had a slight delay this morning. Took the bus from Leon to Hospital de Orbigo to start our walking. Instead of going straight there we took a detour and went to a random Hospital in Leon on the city bus.
      All good. We overcame that obstacle and just got there a little later.
      Five minutes after starting we met Bea and Gus from Philadelphia.
      We had some trail magic today. Came across some hippies who had a whole spread for us with a donation. We both made our own fresh squeezed orange juice. (I may talk a lot about their O.j, I am slightly obsessed.)
      Total miles walked was 14.2. Total trail miles was 11.4.
      We are staying in a nice place with 10 people to the room. Everyone was asleep by 9 pm.

      23. Etappe nach Astorga

      Whooop!! 🎉 Mit 32,6km habe ich meine bisher längste Etappe auf dem Camino Francés gelaufen. Beine sind super, Füße müde, an den Fersen je eine neue Blase (wieder von der Einlege-Sohle) und bisschen Sorge vor einem Sonnenbrand im Gesicht. Vielleicht sollte ich mir doch mal einen Hut zulegen. 🙈😅

      Aber von vorne. Um ca. halb 8 habe ich die Herberge verlassen. 9,9km später gab es Frühstück. Nach weiteren 5km habe ich Hospital de Órbigo mit der coolen Brücke erreicht. Da fiel gerade eine große, laute Touri-Gruppe ein und ich bin nach dem obligatorischen Foto schnell weiter. 2,6km weiter gab es den ersten Eiskaffee. Außerdem habe ich meine Füße nochmal eingecremt und abgetapet.

      Außerdem habe ich einem neuen Pilgerausweis erworben, da meiner bereits vollgestempelt ist. Dann weitere 2,6km bis ins nächste Dorf gelaufen und einfach weiter. 6km vor Astorga gab es ne Hippie-Oase. Camino Magic. Trail Magic. Mit einem reichen gedeckten Tisch. In San Justo de la Vega gab es den zweiten Eiskaffee. Uns schließlich machte ich mich auf die letzten 4km. Halb 5 war ich in der Herberge.

      Mal sehen, was mein Körper morgen sagt 😁

      Oh, und das vegetarische Abendessen gesten für 13 € war Bombe. Salat, Suppe, Paella und Crêpes.      Les mer
