      D17- Burgos

      May 30 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Today was a rest day so we slept until about nine. After breakfast we went to the Burgos Cathedral and spent an hour or more looking around, it is absolutely enormous and so beautiful. On leaving the cathedral we bumped into John, another pilgrim from Florida, who we have crossed paths with since Orisson. We all went for lunch at a nearby restaurant. While we were eating lunch many we saw Amy who was on her way to a hotel just on the other side of Burgos. Amy sat with us for a while then went on her way. We will no doubt catch up with her on the trail in the next day or two. After lunch we walked around a bit more through the beautiful park and picked up some paella at the local supermarket for dinner. We went to the pilgrims mass in the cathedral at 7.30pm and we were all blessed by the priest. Afterwards we went to the bar where Chris and Kate were staying and had sangria and pinchos to end our stay in Burgos.Read more

      Day 15 Burgos

      A rest day spent sightseeing.
The Cathedral was first on the list and I simply cannot describe its architecture and beauty.
Predominately Gothic in style and built by architects and master builders down through the centuries it stands in all its glory and is now a World Heritage Site. Onto the Museum of Human Evolution displaying the findings from archaeological sites and fossils helping us to understand the process of human evolution in Europe over the last million years was quite extraordinary.
We finished the day with a visit to the Monastery of Santa Maria Real de las Huelgas a convent founded in the 12th Century as a spiritual retreat for ladies in high society. A retreat sounded rather tempting to us. A high stone wall protected the Cistercian Nuns and reminded us of their dedication and solitary life and still operating today.
Having walked around this beautiful city we retired to the apartment to rest the legs (after 13km) and prepare for tomorrow and the start of the meseta.

      Day 17. Ages to Burgos

      June 1 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

Had a restful night in Ages. I put my silicone in my ears and never heard a thing. We took a taxi to our Hotel Corona de Castilla Burgos. Room was not ready so we went to breakfast. Later we found the pharmacy for epsom salt. While Steve soaked his feet, I had a nap. Felt so good to get caught up on some rest. Afternoon was spent visiting the Cathedral de la Santa Maria Burgos. It is said to be 800,000 years old (1221). It had quite a bit of Gothic influence popular in its day. The first Bishop was from Paris and that was the leading style of the time. As it expanded one will find Baroque influences as well. In 1984 it was listed on the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE LIST.
We later enjoyed a nice salad with fried chicken and eggs and French fries.
Steve has done well wearing his sandals and resting. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. Grateful for a new city to explore, grateful for the downtime to heal and grateful to talk with my parents today

      New beginning

      June 1 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

I got off to a rather rocky start on this trip. My phone would not work here and, after trying several potential solutions, I had to buy another phone. It took many hours to get it set up and apps downloaded. Two-part authentication is not always a good thing!

I walked to Burgos the first day and stayed at the same campground as last year. This walk involved missing a turn, walking in a drainage ditch and along the shoulder of a major highway, climbing over guardrails, and then having to climb over a 5-foot fence. By the time I walked all over the city to various cellular shops, I ended up walking 17 miles that day!

The next day, I went to Tarjados. I got a room at La Fábrica, a repurposed flour mill. It has a very popular restaurant and was packed when I arrived. But it was very quiet in the evening and I was able to get caught up on my sleep and de-stressed.

I did an easy 6-mile walk to Tornillos today. I ran into Dan, whom I had met the first day, and walked most of the way with him. We walked past grain fields all day, which were beautiful, with the wind blowing across them. The town of Rabe de Las Calzadas had some great murals. Upon arrival in Tornillos, I stopped at the Meeting Point albergue (hostel) and secured a lower bunk. It's a very modern purpose-built place, not as interesting as the old renovated buildings. But it has all the amenities a pilgrim could want: reading lights and charging stations at every bunk, separate men's and women's bathrooms, and shelves for all your stuff. These small villages are very picturesque and sometimes quirky. I had lunch in a place showing nonstop music videos from the 60's and 70's: Aerosmith, AC/DC, David Bowie, George Thorogood.

      Body challenged ✔️ Burgos ✔️

      May 27 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Burgos was so far away. I didn’t know how I was going to get there or if I would get there.

Burgos is the end of 12-15 stages of walks. Up the mountains of the Pyrenees and through the vineyards in Rioja. Rolling hills of wheat and green beans. Cold, heat, wind and rain. (Thankfully not too much of any one of them for us). Big city streets and tiny Medieval villages. Grand Cathedrals intimate chapels. Blooming flowers and singing birds. Pintxos, Tapas, Vino Tinto con Limon, olives with anchovies, bull meat on bread, pork belly (torrenzos), tortilla Española (egg and potato pie, chocolate croissant, hard boiled eggs, coffee corridors y leche,

My body got worked hard especially in the early stages and still gets tested daily. My body was broken down, my mind messed with, my soul hurt and pulling myself up from that shit one step at a time and promising myself I would at least try and take the next step. I would in fact take the next step.

So here I am in Burgos!! This right here is enough! All the people and conversations casual and deep are all meaningful.

For tonight I am enjoying the hotel Amy booked for us. A private room and a private bed and private shower is such an amazing feeling.

      On to the Meseta………

      P.S. will
Post pictures of the outside of the Cathedral in separate post.

      Burgos 🍷🍸🍻🦪🍢🍖 food

      June 3, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Burgos ⛪️🛕🚴‍♂️

      June 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Burgos

      May 16 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

      Day 14 Burgos
Distance from Atapuerca to Burgos 20kms

A very cold start of 3c with a bitterly cold wind at our backs. At this point we are up around 1100m and cold temperatures are to be expected at this time of year. We stopped for a delicious breakfast at a cosy bar with the fire going we struggled to get going again. But get going we had to and soon fell into our walking rhythm. Entering into Burgos was through the outer suburbs and not quite what we are used to but we soon came upon the city Centre with its striking Cathedral as its centerpiece. The city was buzzing with pilgrims and tourists and the funky cafes and bars spilling with people and counters displaying their appetizing tapas.
By the time we had walked around the city centre checking out and planning what we might be seeing tomorrow we had clocked up 36kms for the day. We had booked an apartment close to the Cathedral and are taking “a rest day” tomorrow for sightseeing. In the meantime we have enjoyed doing our laundry oh such simple things in life!

Accomodations we have stayed in so far

      May 22 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

We have experienced the highs and lows in terms of sleeping accommodations so far. We shared a room with 6 people in a municipal, when an alberque made a mistake regarding our arrival date, we have shared a single room for 4, an apartment with 2 bedrooms, a swanky white bathrobe type hotel. I've had access to a hairdryer exactly 4 times in 16 days.Read more

Day 16 Burgos is so beautiful!

      May 22 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Its been chilly and damp in Spain and we have needed to layer up to stay warm. Temps have been in the 40s and 50s. We left this morning in the fog and made our way to the city of Burgos, which is so beautiful that it took my breath away. We walked past the airport to get to town, pic attached. The cathedral is amazing! Our hotel is so nice too. We keep seeing our Camino family on the trail. They are the people we met at our albergue the first few days and since we are on the same timeline, we keep seeing them in different cites. We had a reunion in the city of Bergos today.Read more
