      Awesome food

      16. august 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Dinner at El Serbal y la Luna was great. First, peppers with garlic; second, the best couscous I ever had, with vegetables; and icecream for dessert.
Breakfast was equally good. I was able to soak some oats overnight, which is the closest I could get to the bircher muesli I normally have at home.Les mer

      Cool walk

      16. august 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Today was an easy 25k walk, with clouds and a cool wind, and it didn't get hot at all.
During the walk I have been chatting with a few other pilgrims, from Germany and the US, all in English.
Then I heard a local speaking Spanish and I almost asked: "your Spanish is very good, where are you from?" 🤣Les mer

    • Molinaseca to Cacabelos

      14. oktober 2022, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

A 23km day in very fine weather and the way was quite flat, so a welcome change from yesterday’s more vertical ordeal.

Nothing was available for breakfast in Molinaseca as we left our room at 7:30 so we just marched straight for Ponferrada, 7km away, with dawn breaking along the way. The route avoided some extensive eastern suburbs by skirting the south edge of the town, often with houses on our right and open fields on our left. Along the way we noticed a pleasant scent coming from the vegetation we were passing: slightly peppery and a bit sweet. We’ve noticed it before in the morning walks. A fellow pilgrim thinks it may be wild fennel.

On arrival at the first bar in Ponferrada we stopped for a coffee and muffin. Also there was Saskia, a Dutch pilgrim we’d met at Ingo’s albergue a couple of days back. After coffee we followed the Camino right through town, admiring the castle as we passed by. On the far side of town we had a second installment of breakfast at a very peaceful bar near the church of Our Lady of Compostilla (not a typo). From there it was about 6km on streets and roads through various small settlements till we opted for a sandwich and cold drink at Camponaraya.

We finally got back on a dirt path as we exited that town and the final 6km was rather pleasant through some well treed undulating vineyards, some of the vines quite old.

The day had become quite warm so we sat down for a pre-checkin radler in the shade outside our hotel, the hotel Saint James Way. After getting settled and cleaned up we returned for another drink and discovered that Saskia was also staying here, as was a Danish couple who had also been at Ingo’s albergue, Penny and Frank.

We all got chatting and ended up dining together in the hotel restaurant. Penny and Frank are traveling with a very intelligent well trained little female dog called “Camino”, of the Papillon breed. She apparently walks all the way with them, and with the normal canine toing and froing, probably does twice the distance that her owners walk. Dogs of that breed are known for their long distance capabilities, Frank told us.

It turns out that Penny, when about 19, was a backpacker in Australia and had picked asparagus in Cowra, NSW to make some money while there. Likely we will meet them all again as we are all aiming to reach Santiago about the same time.

      Day 29 Cacabelos

      9. mai, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

We are back in grape country. Cherry trees and roses everywhere. Our tour of the castle took 2 hrs out of our day but still managed to check in at 3:30 after 25 km. The temperature is rising, I think in the high 20s so walking in the afternoon is a bit harder. We are arriving in Santiago May 18 so not too many days left and we are getting anxious🤗😁🤗😁Les mer

Day 36. Cacabelos to Vega de Valcarce

      20. juni, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

We left Cacabelos this morning with the temps about 50 degrees. Very pleasant for walking. Crossing the Rio CUA out of town and back into the wine country. Rows and rows of grapevines and a few hills to climb. Villafranca was an interesting town. Castillo de Villafranca was on our path. It was built in 1515 over a previous fortification. We then had a second breakfast and came across Bernie from Austria. He said he was very tired, he hurt all over but he was very happy! I think we all are starting to feel the same way. He then proceeded to get a beer. It was 9 am! I came across a quilt shop in Villafranca! Unfortunately it was closed. About the last 3-4 miles, it started raining. We donned our rain gear and kept walking to Pensión Francisco in Vega de Valvarce. I can’t believe how wonderful it is. The host was very sweet and there were little treats in our room. And would you believe Bernie showed up here too. When he saw his room, he could only say how good the Camino has been to him! We also ran into Chen and Anna from South Korea today. They are staying in the same place tonight. We first met them on our 2nd day in Borda. We thought they would be so far ahead by now since we had to take 5 rest days in Burgos. What a happy reunion and to find them doing so well!
We had a wonderful dinner with mixed salad and seafood paella and Steve had to have the ice cream! Today we walked 16.59 miles (37984 steps). Hoping tomorrow will be a short day (12 miles) since we have a significant climb in the morning.
Today I’m grateful for the nice walk, grateful for the clean laundry(we splurged and had it done for us) and grateful for a full belly!

      Cacabelos to Trabadelo (via Pradela)

      20. juni, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Left lovely Cacabelos at 7 after a fairly bad nights sleep. Fell asleep quite quickly listening to the Newsagents podcast ( vaguely trying to keep up with the election from here) but then awake on and off. Someone left the albergue at about 5 which definitely woke me up and didn’t sleep much after that.
It’s was a beautiful morning of sun and clouds and felt as if it might be quite warm. Undulating path but mainly along an alarmingly busy road to Villafranca del Bierzo. I really hate walking along roads - particularly when it’s right on the road with no separation at all from the traffic! This was bad and made me more determined to take the alternative route from Villafranca to Trabadelo rather than continuing along the road.
Finally got to Villafranca just before 9 but then couldn’t find anywhere open for breakfast. Think I must have take a a slightly odd route into the town as didn’t find anyone else which is unusual. Finally rang cress to find out where she was and we met in the Plaza Mayor at the Cafe Sevilla where they served huge portions of tortilla and cake and churros (I didn’t have all these but did eat a lot!).
Then took the decision to go it alone up the high alternative route. I love walking and walking alone is fine but this is very remote and felt quite scary. It’s super steep to start with and I had to keep stopping. Worried about whether anyone would find me if anything happened!! But it gradually evens out a bit and although still mainly up for the whole 8k to Pradela it does become an easier walk. I trod the steep and rugged pathway rejoicingly in the end!!
Arrived in Pradela at about 11.30 and have now had coffee, sparkling water and a ’delicious goats cheese salad while enjoying the company of the cats and listening to a cuckoo.
It feels very high up here, very lonely and I feel quite brave!!
It began to rain a little while I was having lunch so ordered a cup of té rojo and a piece of chestnut cake and waited for it to stop. Two little swallows were sitting on the telegraph wire just across from the albergue terrace where I was sitting - it looked as if they were also waiting for it to stop.
Finally set off down the hill to Trabadelo in rain gear but didn’t need it for long as the last bit of drizzle stopped. Just before reaching Trabadelo there were some cherry trees with ripe fruit and low enough branches for me to reach them. Finally got my fix of cherries straight from the tree which I seem to have had a lot more of last year. Sure they have restorative properties!
Now at Casa Susi. Checked in by Firmin, susi’s partner I think. It’s a lovely dorm with 10 proper beds and a sitting area at the end. The garden is full of vegetables (puts my allotment to shame) but also a good drying line with lots of wind and an area with a swing and a hammock. The river is at the end of the garden but despite looking like it was going fro be warm, it hasn’t really been after all, so a bit too cold to test the river out today.
Anticipating tomorrow as a long long day with a big up in the middle so planning to set off early.
Since writing have been out for a drink at another lovely albergue (de la puente) and then had a delicious, welcoming and very special dinner at Casa Susi- meeting Susi and all the other pilgrims round the dinner table. A very special place - maybe I’ll write a bit more about this tomorrow but it’s late now and I have to get up early.

      Molinaseca to Cacabelos

      20. oktober 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

It was supposed to rain, A LOT. Everyone was talking about how horrible the rain would be, how much they were dreading the walk... afterall, we had all just had the longest, hardest walk through the rain, wind, and cold. I mean, I did taxi the last 9kms the day before for a reason!
But, surprise of surprises, the weather report changed. Molinaseca was now supposed to have rain early in the morning, and then it would calm down. Ponferrada was supposed to have heavy rain after 1pm, and Cacabelos was only supposed to have light rain. If I timed my day right, I could avoid most of the rain!
It just so happened that somehow, the vibrate on my watch alarm had been turned off, and I overslept, so instead of leaving the aubergue by 6:45, I left at nearly 8:30. I was a bit frustrated by this but thought "it's okay, I have a long day, I needed the sleep, and now I've missed the heavy morning rain and darkness", and I began my walk. I actually really enjoyed myself, I walked alone I think, I may have listened to a bit of music, and then I got to Ponferrada and really wanted to see the Templar Castle so I could take photos for dad. I did that and visited the Templar store where there was a handcrafted wooden mug with the castle burned into it, but I couldn't bring that back with me, it would be too bulky.
I continued on, and before I knew it, the route felt wrong. It's very easy in cities to get turned around or on the wrong path, so I checked my map and realized I was on the bike path. I turned around, and here comes a pilgrim in a red poncho. I stopped her and told her we were on the wrong path, and she asked if she could join me to get back on the correct way. Her name was Jillz (or Jules?) from Australia, and as we walked, I found out that she's a physical therapist and a yoga instructor and I said "as a PT, you might be interested to hear my story. Have you ever heard of FND?"
She had, she also has had patients with it who just give up on ever getting better, and when i told her that I have it, she couldn't believe her ears, especially when i told her that a year ago, I was struggling to walk. I found out that she became a PT because she had become sick and had gone through a healing journey, learning how to reuse her legs and her body again also. What a connection! And all because my alarm didn't go off, and we both took a wrong turn! We spent the day walking together and just really enjoying the company of each other and realizing that we are both absolute unstoppable badasses.

      Lunch at Villafranca del Bierzo

      16. juni 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

It's a long slow day. The pace is slow at the back. Mainly due to injury and also a too heavy pack. What can you say? We are all adults. You can advise but you can't make anyone do anything. We've arrived in Villafranca at last and now for a much needed break and more importantly - lunch!Les mer

      24. Tag: Ponferrada - Villafranca del Bi

      28. august 2019, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C
