Day 11 - Cirueña -> Viloria de Rioja

      May 12, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

The idea for the day was to walk 20 km to Viloria de Rioja, in order to stay at the Refugio Acacio & Orietta. Eva was excited about the idea of staying at the albergue of Paulo Coelho's friends. Mark and Sonja already had reservations at the other albergue in the Viloria de Rioja. There are two albergues in the village, which is a lot for a village with only 28 inhabitants.
Eva and I started our walk to the first step, Santo Domingo de la Calzada. I was excited to visit the Cathedral of Santo Domingo. Besides the body of the Santo Domingo, the patron saint of the village, there is a rooster in a gothic chicken coop inside the church. There is a legend that a roasted rooster was placed on the mayor's table, it stood up and crowed to prove the innocence of a pilgrim who had been unjustly accused. Unfortunately, the church was closed due to the holiday in honor of the saint.
After Santo Domingo the next village is Grañón. Is a kind of village that you can cross very quickly, but it's worth to stop and go intro the church. By the way, I did this all the time, stopped and went intro every church I could. It happened a very funny situation in this church. After visiting the inside of the church, I noticed that Eva was sitting in silence. I thought that she was praying or just thinking. I left in silence, to wait for her outside. After about 15 minutes she left the church, came to me and said that she had fallen asleep. We both started laughing.
As we leave Grañón we begin to say goodbye to La Rioja and walk through the region of Castilla y León.
The next village is Redicilla del Camino. Another place that I have been waiting to visit, because of the 12th century baptismal font from the , in Romanesque style. But again my expectations were disappointed, because the church was closed. The only thing to do was to continue to Castildelgado and finally to Viloria de Rioja.

      10. Tag: Najera - Grañón

      August 13, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      Ventosa to Cirueña

      May 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Long hot day with a trudge up to Ciruña past a golf course and ugly new golf apartments development. Old town of Cirueña a bit tired and dusty - not the most beautiful town we've stayed in - but the auberge is a well set up family home. Comfy though a come down to earth after the flash hotel last night.
      Meet Dirk from Germany. Great

      Spanische Begleitung

      October 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Sunrise Peace, and a Dog

      June 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

Somewhere in this, is a lesson.

I woke to a colorful sky and jumped out of bed to get some sunrise stretchies in.

I was glad for the puffy jacket, sunrise temps were very cool-feeling (maybe mid-50s?) with an Eastern breeze.

As I walked up a small rise, in front of a ruined building, to catch a better vantage I thought... "Perfect! Quiet, cool." And I dropped my phone and water to begin sun salutations.

That's when the enormous-sounding dog in the 'ruin' woke and told me in no uncertain terms that (s)he was not ok with me standing there.

So I moved. Not far, sunrise waits for no man after all. But far enough to restore some tranquility.

It's often very easy to make a small change to find tranquility.

      Grañon

      July 15, 2021 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We started out early as usual, with coffee on the way out of town. Then walked for a couple of hours before stopping for breakfast at Cirueña. Then on to Santo Domingo de Calzada where we stopped at the cathedral. It’s an interesting town with a history of some interesting miracles that may have occurred ages ago. There is a chicken house shrine that is associated with one of the miracles. It’s complicated, ask me about it when I get back. The cathedral has built up streets all around it, so it’s impossible to get a picture that shows the whole building.

Our original goal for the day was 9 miles to Santo Domingo de Calzada. But after the cathedral we miraculously felt up to going on to the next town. So we ended up at Grañon with 12 miles under our belts for the day. We’re starting to get into shape! We need to get an average of 10 miles a day in order to finish at Santiago de Compostela in time to meet our wives in Portugal near the 18th. We will probably do some longer days in order to have layover days in some of the more interesting cities. We will use the postal service option to have your backpack forwarded to an albergue so we can do those long days. In the end, if we want to take more time, we will. It’s about the journey.

Interesting note, we’re at the west edge of Rioja province and suddenly the vineyards are gone and it’s all dry land wheat farming we’re walking through. Not as interesting as the vineyards, but still a very pleasant countryside. A long hill we ascended today had a nice surprise at the top. Way out in the middle of nowhere someone built a resting place with concrete lounge chairs. These people are really supportive of the Camino.

Tonight we’re staying at a “Donativo” albergue, where you pay what you feel is appropriate. A communal dinner and grab as you go breakfast are included. It’s clean, but has a lot of “character”. So far every place we have stayed has accommodated my travel CPAP needing a plug in.

Got a call in with Debbie tonight, which was nice. And I think I’ll be able to upload 2 days posts that I didn’t have internet for yesterday.
      Heading to bed now.
      Good Night,
      Phil

      Najera-Santo Domingo de la Calzada

      April 30, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

21 km de marche après avoir bu quelques bons verres de Rioja la veille. Le vin 🍷est vraiment délicieux. On se gâte toujours dans les Tapas. Une route sans histoire avec des paysage incroyable. Beehives to Ghostowns

      September 17, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Our track today lead us through the famous ochre soils of Rioja. Grape vines to the left, olives to the right, most of the way. Rioja provides many picnic sites for its pilgrims as well as a most helpful series of kilometer markers. At one of the earlier picnic sites we saw this beehive shaped structure. Much of the last half of our day followed a country road, newly graded and topped with a mustard colored rock. Just as Dorothy before us, our track lead to a surreal location. Ciruena was built during the boom and more or less abandoned during the down turn. Our albergue is straight out of a psychedelic dream.Read more

      Always moving .... forward

      September 17, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Illuminated only by our single headlamp, the trail out of Navarette was spooky this morning at 6:15 AM when we struck off. Once it has risen, the sun is a great guide in the morning as we need only to follow our shadows, inexorably moving further west. 230 kilometers completed and 570 remaining to Santiago de Compostella.Read more
