      Von Córdoba nach Granada

      20 mei 2023, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

      The Mezquita and Cathedral

      17 maart 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Awoke this morning to a brisk drizzly day. After a couple of cups of coffee headed out across the Roman Bridge to the Mezquita. The Great Mosque of Córdoba. Construction begun in the year 785. An expansive mosque the largest in the Islamic world that took 200 years to complete. The structure has 850 columns supporting its roof. It is so big that in the 16th century a Cathedral was constructed in its center. Scattered throughout were Christian iconography, statuary, altars, small chapels, and a room with large silver reliquaries.
Overall quite impressive. But it failed to inspire me. However, the exterior protective walls were massive denoting a powerful force within.
On the road again to the last stop of the week the mountain town of Ronda. But first a stop at a bakery shop buying three pasteles for the road. One each chicken, 5 cheese and chocolate. Now these were inspiring.

      Bus to Córdoba

      15 mei, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This morning we got up reasonably early and found a good nearby and open place for breakfast, then got a taxi to the bus station, walking up and down the four flights in the hostal for the last time! It was an interesting bus ride - again millions of olive trees, but as we moved on there were other crops, and fields of pale yellow and on closer inspection we think it was the grain crops already drying out, as it was quite deep and tall…so the green new growth maybe doesn’t last all that long, or maybe everything is a bit earlier here in the warmer south. Also fields of green potential sunflowers - just endless fields of cultivation.

Arrived at Córdoba at a bit after one, and walked to the hotel, quite walkable distance from the bus station, and also train station where we leave from on Saturday. And we are now at a real hotel!! With lift, everything more conventional than the last 2 charming gems. But we are very well situated, and a short walk into the historic centre and all that we want to see.

And soon after our arrival Omnia also arrived, from Madrid by train! Lovely reunion with her. And after a short pause we all walked out and first sat and had a little light refreshment…some delicious croquetas of spinach and pine nuts…great combo…to keep us going till dinner. Then we all wandered round a bit, through the very pretty narrow streets, admiring the gorgeous courtyards leading into buildings and just getting a feel of the town. We have 2 full days here, and we are booked in to see the Mesquita tomorrow - booked online after experience in Seville and Granada, but may not even have been necessary as it was easy to choose day and time!! This town has a lovely feel - not as frenetic as Seville or even Granada, and is so charming and manageable. Glad we have 3 nights here. And the temperature is even perfect…cool in morning, and not too hot at peak…

Just back from dinner now…we had spotted a good potential place in our meandering…it was a Jewish establishment, though I hadn’t noticed that at first, but we had noticed the interesting menu posted up, and the food was delicious and a little bit different from what we have experienced in Andalusia so far. But it was a bit chaotic - we got there at about 7.30 and one poor girl was working the whole place it seemed…at about 8 more workers appeared, probably the 8 o’clock eating hour… anyway we had delicious eggplant with honey and sesame seeds (which we were offered twice more…!), patatas bravas with spicy sauce, chiperones plancha(!!!), a version of pimientos padron and all wonderful when they finally arrived. I have a very good feeling for our visit here.

      Córdoba

      4 juni 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

As we were walking yesterday, we were thinking of whether we would walk the 26km stage from Santa Cruz to Córdoba.
The temperature was forecasted to be 29°C, Jonathan had indicated that there was no shade, and there were no places to stop.
Yet my darling Rachel was willing to give it a go. Then it dawned on us that it was going to be Sunday, that trains run frequently between Málaga and Córdoba, and that this train journey only takes an hour.
So we asked our son Robert if he had anything planned for the day, and when he answered that he didn't, we suggested he take a train and join us with his wife and our two young grandsons in Córdoba.
Our bus, one of only two on a Sunday, left at 10:20am from Santa Cruz, and arrived at 10:50am, just 20 minutes after the train from Málaga.
For obvious reasons, I can't post photos of our grandsons, although if you look carefully, you may notice a child next to Rachel in one of the photos.
We spent a lovely time walking around Córdoba while the youngest had a nap in the stroller, we had lunch together, and even found a playground.
At 4:25pm, Robert and his little family took a train back home and we headed off to our accommodation, a little apartment in the San Basilio area.
      A beautiful day!

      Córdoba, rest day

      5 juni 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

      .
      Today, Monday, rest day.
We started with a visit of the Mezquita at 8.30am. Every morning, except on Sundays, the Mezquita can be visited free of charge until 9.20am, when everyone has to leave, unless they want to stay for mass at 9.30am. At 8.20am, the queue of people stretched to the corner of the street.
After the visit, we went to do a little stretch of the Camino on the other side of the river, just so we could say that arriving in Córdoba on the Roman Bridge was great.
We then climbed up to the Mezquita tower, where the view is superb.
We visited the Mudéjar chapel of San Bartolomé, the Casa-Museo del Guadamecí Omeya (no photos allowed), the Casa Árabe, the Plaza de la Corredera and the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol.
To round off the day, we went to see some of the patios that make Córdoba famous.

      Ubeda to Córdoba

      26 mei 2023, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

Our 2.5 hour bus ride from Úbeda to Córdoba gave us plenty of time to reflect on what has and has not worked for us on this trip. A quick summary:

      Worked well:
      - The Tenacious Tape I brought in our mending kit. It repaired the rip I put in the knee of my only pair of trousers when I fell on the second day of walking, and it is still in perfect shape.
      - hand sanitizer for getting pine pitch out of trousers and off of pack surface.
      - Enlightened Equipment sleeping quilts with half-inch baffles - no cold spots
      - bike sun sleeves for me
      - Pacas socks made from alpaca wool - so soft they make walking a joy! Thanks, Diane!
      - Patagonia lightweight fleece pullovers
      - Ibex lightweight wool shirts
      - low-cut Lone Peak trail shoes for Ned
      - low-cut Brooks Divide trail shoes with lace keepers for me
      - the Decathlon poles we bought to replace our Black Diamond poles that BA didn’t deliver
      - super-lightweight EVA sandals (6 oz, $10 from Amazon)
      - Sunday Afternoon sun hat with neck cape
      - Apple Air Tags in luggage and valuables pouches

Would have been nice to have:
-fingerless bike gloves for me to protract the palms of my hands when I fell
      - stick sunscreen (it was in the mailing tube that British Airlines never delivered)
      - an ultralight 4 oz daypack for grocery shopping and walks around town. Could double as a stuff sack for the quilts.

      What didn’t work;
      - Tube sunscreen - always messy
      - our Lone Peak 6 mid-height trail boots gave both of us severe ankle problems, although we have loved the earlier versions of this hiking boot and have worn them on many previous trips
      - multi-focal prescription glasses; worked for me before cataract surgery, but contributed to my falls on this trip
      - long shoe laces without lace keepers; also contributed to falls
      - packing our poles in a mailing tube. Standard luggage would have been easier for the airline to deal with, and maybe they would have arrived at the same time we did.

      Córdoba: Friends and the Feria

      27 mei 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

We haven’t been to Spain for four years, so there was lot to catch up on when we met Fran, Ana, María, Celia, and Carmen for dinner. By pure chance, it was also the last day of the fair in Córdoba, so after dinner we walked across the Guadalquivir to the fairgrounds and saw the dancing, the 86 casetas, the light displays, and the music, all accompanied by explanations from Fran and Ana as to how the Córdoba feria differed from those in the other provincial capitals. It made for a festive ending to a special day filled with the very best of friendship and kindness.Meer informatie

      19 april, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C
