      Grandas de Salime - Fonsagrada

      October 2, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

What goes up must come down

      September 23, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

      Today's KMs - 41.3 kms
      Total KMs - 408.7 kms
      Total blisters - nothing new

After yesterday's effort to reach the peaks of the Hospitales today's walk started with 7+ kms of sheer descent (elevations to prove it). The downhill was beautiful albeit painful on the knees as it was through a pine forest with beautiful views of the Embalse de Salime Dam. I could just imagine Josh W downhill riding all the way and loving it. It was a bit sad to walk through the trees as the 2017 fires swept through this region and all the trees were blackened with little signs of regrowth.

As seems to be tradition we reached our final destination, Castro, too early so we decided to push on, despite the rain. The only thing being that the next town with an albergue was another 25 kms away which resulted in our longest walk so far at over 40kms for the day.

The afternoons walk was much more forgiving with only smaller ups and downs except for the last 1km approaching A Fonsagrada where we are spending the night. Another town on a hill that we've managed to make our final stop 😩

Long day so I think it'll be an early night tonight. More rain and muddy paths are on the cards tomorrow!

      Silberrücken

      May 19, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      Castro - A Fonsagrada 20km

Read more

      Ultreia

      June 4 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Read more

      A Fonsagrada

      June 4 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Vandaag ongeveer 25 km afgelegd.

Zie https://oficinadelperegrino.com/
      Voor een teller van vandaag.

      Fonsagrada

      September 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We enjoyed our stay in Castro especially the home cooked food and the sociable evening with a Dutch mother and daughter, an Italian and a Spaniard. We were very cold when we arrived but warmed up when we’d eaten. It was much colder walking today too and we had some more rain. We are finally in Galicia, the last region of Spain that we’ll visit. It was quite a long day today but mostly forest trails and some very steep uphill sections. The last kilometre up to Fonsagrada was practically vertical!!Read more

      Up and down in Galicia

      September 20, 2021 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

This was a beautiful walk, except for a few kms in a logging forest, and with a lot more elevation than I remembered. Wikiloc tells me it was 34 km and 920 m up. Five years ago that was a walk in the park —this year I was dragging when I finally got to my destination. I deliberately went an extra 8 km beyond the “normal” stage so that I would have a short day into Lugo tomorrow.

I have yet to come to that promised “end of huge elevation gains”, but I just take it slow and steady and enjoy the beautiful scenery. This morning on one particularly steep ascent, I came across an old man who was walking slowly up the hill. I tried to talk with him a bit, but I don’t know whether it was his lack of teeth (I only saw two) or his very thick Gallego accent, but my comprehension was limited. Every now and then I heard the word Camino or Santiago, but that was about it. When I finally got up to the town at the top, I asked the woman in the bar about this elderly gentleman. She told me he makes the 3 km walk up and 3 km down every day, rain or shine. In his rubber boots and holding a big stick for support. And there I was in my fancy trail runners with my expensive hiking poles, huffing and puffing as much as he was, or more!

I’m staying in a real hotel tomorrow in Lugo, and I am very much looking forward to a shower that is bigger than 2 or 3 square feet! Not a complaint mind you, since I am already at the pilgrim luxury level of having my own private room and bath.

      Getting closer and closer

      June 2, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

We are now really getting close to Santiago.. Here in Galicia they mark every so many meters with a sign of the distance and the last one we saw said 123km and some meters. But the views here still are spectacular and we are enjoying every moment of it.Read more
