      D11- Navarrete to Azofra 22km

      May 24 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

We were up around 0630 this morning and had a quick breakfast of toast and jam in our albergue. We met up with Amy again as she was staying in the same albergue. We walked up past the church and followed arrows and headed out of town. The walk today was mainly on a wide gravel road through Rioja vineyards. We still have poppies and daises lining the path along the way. We walked most of the day with Amy. We arrived at Najera mid morning and stopped at the first cafe we came to. We had juice, coffee and pinchos and everything was delicious. We finished off with a fruit Madeira cake that I had bought the day before at Viana, so we are definitely not starving. After refreshments we still had about 6 or 7 km to reach Azofra. The road was relatively flat through more vineyards, however the landscape changed a bit after Najera. We still had the healthy vines but now we had a backdrop of red dirt and very stony in areas. We are staying in the municipal albergue tonight and has over 100 beds with only two beds per room. There was a plunge pool in the courtyard with icy water so we all soothed our tired feet. We met up with Chris and Kate again as they were staying at the same albergue. We walked around town and found a field of poppies. We had pizza for dinner at a cafe and we thought it hilarious as when we ordered our pizzas he pulled them out from the freezer. We were expecting the worst but they actually turned out to quite nice.Read more

      Rest stop

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Just a mini note about how sweet it is partway through a day of walking to just stop for a while, take the shoes off, have a snack and just be. Right here there are some lovely wooden benches and gazebos alongside the way, and up on the hill yet another beautiful church. There’s sun, shade, a breeze, and all the time in the world.Read more

      Weinlos durch La Rioja

      June 3 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

    • Day 10

      Nájera

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

For a 28K day it was not bad! Started early, at 6:00 to maximize time spent walking in coolness, and that worked well on this hot, sunny day.. Saw LOTS of grapes. So many grapes! We visited a church with more gilding than I would have thought possible.

I met an enterprising momma cat and four kittens who sat along the camino and were well fed, including having some leftover chicken bocadilla from my pack.

I also had my first communal dinner made for us by the hospitaleros who run the albergue. It was wonderful! Good good, good conversation.

Tomorrow is an easy day, only 21 kilometers, so we’ll sleep a little later and enjoy a less demanding day.

      Purple

      June 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌩️ 82 °F

Silly thing. I became obsessed with the color purple during my preparations for the Camino. Purple iPhone, can opener, towel, collapsible cup, and so forth. Don’t know why. It’s just become my favorite color—although I am still very partial to green.

Anyway, we are seeing a LOT of purple along the way, mostly in the way of wild flowers by the side of the trail. I’ve attached a pic here, but there seems to be an endless and delightfully never ending variety!

Thank you God for purple. (And those other colors too.)

      Santo Domingo de Calzada,Spain

      September 10 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Hello! We are in Santo Domingo De Calzada.
Easier day of 20km. We can feel things creaking when we get up after a break for food.🤣. I feel better when the 20-30yr old somethings are limping along or talking about their pains.
We have been running into folks from days ago and recently met folks! This Camino has me saying, ‘Hello!’ as if I am wondering through the neighborhood store only it’s folks from 5 different counties! Side note: There are, actually many Americans here on this Camino.
Some folks from many countries, and I am side stepping a bit, are getting a reality check. Walking 20 or 30km is a challenge they are all up to! It’s the reality of walking 20+km daily for weeks that has a few folks changing perspectives. And they are impressed with what they are accomplishing! 😃 When pilgrims get to a town or village with a cafe we descend upon the cafe! Orders of coffee, orange juice, quick food etc and a chance to visit. A moment to check on each other’s journey and any pains. But the longer isn’t long as there are still miles to go. 😎
I want to share about a gal ( her dad is 91 So that makes her how old?😊) she looks youthful. When she returns home to Germany after this Camino she is immediately starting to plan for an April PCT ( Pacific Crest Trail). trip. 5 months, full pack ( food, tent, sleeping bag, cooking burner, etc), it’s the west coast Mexico to Canada mountain trek. She finds this Camino easy. 💕 Her attitude is amazing!
Our days are still cool in this wine country. We also see sunflowers by the acres which are impressive even if they are past season.
We could see this town many hours before arriving. It gives one pause to know that by car at good speed it would take minutes for what takes by foot hours. It’s an interesting perspective.
The town is lovely and has a Michelin rated restaurant! We may step up our dinner plans!!
***The Beehive looking stone structure was a vineyard guardian shelter in the 1800’s. ( shade from the heat, rain shelter, etc)

      Op weg naar Nájera

      May 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Read more

    • Day 16

      Ventosa to Nájera

      October 3, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

The climb to Alto de San Anton was not difficult, and there was a long gradual descent to the river valley below. Mostly through more Rioja vineyards. Sue finally broke down and grabbed a bunch of grapes to eat. I told her the Nájera police arrested anybody entering town with blue or purple lips! :-)

A long walk across the valley floor seemed to last forever, but we made it to our hostel for tonight!

Be met a nice bicycle Pilgrim from Brazil and bumped into a couple cycling, with a friend driving their camper van, who met met a few days ago.

Update: Rioja apparently has Frontons! And when we first walked up the street to our Hostel, I did not notice the sandstone cliff at the end of the street!

    • Day 8

      1 week today

      July 30, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The first week of the walk went quickly, and I made more distance than expected. I end each walk very tired, and with sore legs, but I recover quite well overnigh.
As I said the other day, I keep adjusting. Lately it's been about food expectations. At home I was keeping a plant-based diet, and I knew it was going to be hard, if not impossible, to keep it here. I was prepared to accept any vegetarian food. But even that is difficult. I have had amazing vego food at some albergues, but often if I go to a restaurant, all they can offer is salad, without any protein. I am therefore expanding into fish and seafood... and some of the tapas I had last night contained other meat too. I can eat anything if I want to, but I feel for people who have serious dietary limitations.
I'm also getting better at wearing my backpack. I was getting very sore in the main points of contact: hips and shoulders. I'm now wearing it higher, and hips are better. I am also wearing a pair of socks as shoulder pads, and it's helping too.
I'm wearing woollen socks and not getting any blisters at all.
Tomorrow I will be reaching 200k. If I can keep this rate, I will finish within 5 weeks, but I have up to 6. Depending how I feel when I finish, I can keep walking a few more days - but if not, I'm sure I will find something else to do 😄

      His 4th Camino
