At the end of dinner, a man, whom I thought to be Australian, turned me and asked, do you speak English? I replied, “Un poquito, why do you ask?” “Ha, Ha, an American!” And he limped off. His table mates explained that his shoes over the past two days and 25 km have been golf shoes and they are putting him in a taxi tomorrow. Samantha, Nick James and Grainne James are Irish and invited me over for a glass of wine. It was Grainnes’ 60th birthday yesterday and they are traveling the last 100km of The Del Norte Way. Eventually they will meet a larger group in Salamanca. A good time of fellowship and discussing parenting and Grainnes advice (she is a psychologist). Be open to reconciliation and “make an intentional space” for it.

I will hike back to Furelos to try to catch its uncommon crucifix. The elder brother of the pair that runs Carlos 96 advises it’s a market day in Melidé which will be fun.
Made it to the Igrexa de San Xoan de Furelos, but sadly the church has been closed since Covid. It’s crucifix is supposed to be unique since Christ is atypically pointing one hand to heaven while the other reaches to earth.

Regrouped and found the Sunday market in Melidé and went to mass at Igrexa San Pedro de Melidé. Found the historical cultural museum across the street, housed in a former Hospital.Read more

Von airexe nach melide.

Guten Abend, mal ganz auf Deutsch. Also, heute war auf dem Weg von airexe nach melide den ganzen Tag strahlender Sonnenschein angesagt. Zum Nachmittag hin wurde es ziemlich warm aber der Weg war überwiegend von Bäumen bestückt, so dass man überwiegend im Schatten gehen konnte. Man trifft so allerhand Menschen auf dem camino und heute begegnete ich einen jungen Mann, der nach seiner Aussage so grade dabei war sämtliche caminos abzuklappern, die es so gibt. Er saß am Wegesrand und pflückte etwas botanisches, welches ich erst beim näher betrachten als 4 blättrige Kleeblätter analysieren konnte. Er gab mir eines davon und wünschte mir viel Glück in meinem Leben, was ich natürlich zurück gegeben habe. Das ist wieder so ein macic moment, den man auf dem camino erleben darf. Und dann beim Einlauf nach melide, denke ich ich sehe nicht richtig, da strahlt mich doch tatsächlich das Firmenlogo meines alten Arbeitgebers Saint Gobain an. So klein ist die Welt. Heute war es wieder ein richtig schöner Tag.
Warm Sonnig und sehr abwechslungsreich.
Leider wieder mit sehr vielen Pilgern auf dem Weg .
Das wird sich wohl auch nicht mehr ändern bis Santiago es werden wohl eher noch mehr da hier viele Wege zusammen laufen.
Ich finde es aber mittlerweile weniger schlimm.
Obwohl der Weg damit sich auch immer mehr Touristisch anfühlt leider.
Es sind jetzt noch 52 km bis nach Santiago dann wird es auch wieder ruhiger 😉.
Mir geht es richtig gut und ich freue mich auf meinen extra abstecher nach Muxia und Finestere.
Die 220 km von Santiago schaffe ich auch noch.
Das Meer ist dann meine Belohnung für die Mühen.Read more

Entering the Camino crowds

Today we passed Melide. A nice town at 45k from Santiago. But it's also the town where the Camino Frances joins the Camino Primitivo. So as of today we are in large crowds of Pellegrino's. What a Difference a Day Makes!

Our hosts last night at Casa de Cota could not have been nicer to us. We arrived yesterday afternoon soaked from the rain & they washed our clothes for us. They didn't have a washer or dryer in the casa rural, so they took our clothes to their house. The woman is 8 months pregnant with twins! It is kindness like this that makes a hard day so much better. There was also a hairdryer provided in the bathroom so we could dry our shoes this morning so we didn't have to walk in wet shoes today.
The sun was out, it was warm and our walk brought us through many pretty little villages. We saw a big stand of eucalyptus trees. More rain is predicted for tomorrow. One day at a time. We have just 3 more days to until we reach Santiago.Read more

Another great day of walking, ending in the fairly large city of Melide. Throughout our days of trekking together, Marjory and I have shared stories and philosophies on life, social justice, personal growth, family, and living our best lives. We laugh frequently as we tromp down the path, cried listening to Joni Mitchell, share "trail hugs" and have dubbed ourselves "Camino wives." We are quite the trekking duo and have developed a deep friendship as a result our Camino experience. Love you, Marjory.
Photos: horse cops are the best; beautiful sites; Audi meets 1000 year old building; random mix of chemistry and music; crossing the ancient bridge into Melide; amazing churches; and the opportunity to order a complete cow for dinner?!
Tomorrow will be our last full day of trekking, before reaching Santiago. It'll be a 30K day, alarm is set for 4:30am, and a 7 piece band is blaring on a stage across the street. Who knows what time we'll be able to get to sleep tonight.😳 Love to you all!❤️Read more

The city is quite big, busy and noisy with traffic, markets and a temporary amusement park.
It's not a particularly nice city, like Burgos or León. It's famous for the traditional pulpo (octopus), cooked the Galician way. We had to go to a pulpería.Read more

Monika, who wanted to do a shorter walk today, ended up in Melide as well. Nelly was here too. On the way we saw Susan, a South African lady I met a few times before. We're all staying at different albergues (except Jan and I) but we arranged to have dinner together.
This time, Nelly sat next to me and I helped with translations when she couldn't follow.
Susan brought another friend.

25km - die son gaan 10pm onder en ek voel soos n stout kind wat nie wil gaan slaap voordat dit donker is nie (al kan ek nie meer my oë oop hou nie). Het vanaand uiteindelik die blinds toegemaak en gaan vroeg slaap. Ek voel offisieel pootuit met my laaste rus dag in Burgos 2 weke terug. 3 dae om te gaan tot in Santiago.

Vandag het ek baie jong mense gesien wat saam met ouma/oupa kom stap vir die laaste 100km. Die vrou in die foto is 86 jaar oud.

N vriendelike priester in Paleis de Rei het ook uiteindelik n raaisel vir my opgelos. Die klein geboutjies in mense se erwe word Hòrreos genoem en het in die ou dae graan en ander goedere gestoor en droog gehou. Ek het gedink dis een of ander graf storie 🤭Read more
